Default screen/display output at boot.

Hi guys,
Running a dual boot with Arch Linux and Windows 8 on my laptop (Asus G74sx). I'm running Syslinux as bootloader.
When i have a video cable plugged in at boot (HDMI or VGA) the image of syslinux and login is projected on one of the extended displays even if theese aren't activated, the laptop screen is black. When i start X i can see things on my laptop screen again.
The bios isn't displayed on the laptop screen either, but can't change anything in the Bios settings itself.
So is there somehow I can force syslinux and tty to be displayed on the laptop screen?

Hi
Its definitely not a display driver issue if you see the wrong resolution in BIOS too.
Try to set the BIOS to default settings (F9) and save the changes before accessing the BIOS.
Furthermore try this:
Shut down the notebook and disconnect the AC adaptor and battery.
Leave the notebook disconnected for some time (2-3 hours). Then press power button 30 sec long. Then connect battery and AC adaptor and power up the unit.
Check if this help.

  • How do I get back to default screen display after clicking View/Full Screen Display?

After I click View/Full Screen on the Firefox menu bar, I lose the main FF Menu bar. When I hit the esc key, the screen remains locked in full screen view mode. Then I have to reboot my computer to get back to the default FF menu and display mode.
Why doesn't the esc key work the way it works when I'm viewing videos in full screen mode?

    Try Fn + F11

    Hi Abijit,
Whatever changes made in STANDARD SELECETION SCREEN 1000 or screens generated using 'SELECTION-SCREEN' statements, are not permanent.

  • Brand new Thinkstation D10 server fails to boot, no beeps or screen display

This server had been working fine for several weeks and today I needed to reboot it. It has been rebooted several times before so so I wasn't trying something new.   I hit the Vista Start button and it immediately shut down.  I couldn't recall if Vista prompts you to Stand-by/restart/shutdown but I think it does - this time it didn't. :/   Afterwards, it would not boot.
    I tried:
Unplugging and replugging it in: it then attempted to boot but shut itself down again after about 30s.
    a Power Supply Reset
    Reseating the memory cards
Removing one of the 4GB memory cards
    Trying the other memory card
    Swapping the two memory cards
Inserting a bootable disk (it never gets to the point of reading anything although the drive spins up)
Checking that everything in the system board was plugged in
Making sure none of the wires were hitting anything else (shorting out)
When replacing that annoying cover from over the memory cards, made sure again I was not pinching any wires
The server does not beep and the (directly connected) monitor never comes alive to display anything when I attempt to reboot.
Per the docs, I observed the power supply Diagnostic LEDs and front panel Power LED while attempting to boot and only the green Diagnostic LED on the power supply is ever activated.  The table indicated this means replace the system board.
    Aack!
Before I head for the support # and an eventual shipment back to Lenovo, would it be worth my while to try and replace the CMOS battery?  Or would a failure of that battery still have resulted in some indication of the problem (beeping and/or screen display)?  Can anyone think of something else to check?
Just thought I'd ask around before assuming that I'm stuck with the system board diagnosis).
    Thanks

The list of things that will make a computer power down on it's own before it can ever get into the OS or initiate a video feed is a short list.
A CPU thermal trip usually occurs within 30 seconds.  This can be cause by a loose or improperly seated heat sink or a failure in the thermal grease coverage.  If your D10 arrived with one CPU and you recently installed a second CPU, try taking the second CPU out.  Should this work, verify the second CPU is the exact match to the first CPU and that the thermal grease is properly applied to the heat sink and the heat sink is securely mounted.
Ambient temperature thermal trip usually takes longer, but can be significantly shorten if the air baffle for the memory is not installed.  Computers with high Front Side Bus frequencies result in memory DIMMS that get very hot.
DC power trip.  This can happen if too much power is being drawn through any of the PCI ports or through the power supply itself.
When you are using a highend video card, check to see if the video card has it's own power connector(a small six lead box).  If it does, there is a power connector, from the power supply, to plug into it.  Without that power plugged in, the video card may appear to hum, and the it will draw too much power through the PCI slot.
Should you have added any additional PCI adapters, try removing these for a test. If that works, add one card back in at a time to isolate the offending PCI card.
Disconnect any USB or Firewire devices you may have attached, including the mouse and keyboard.  If it comes back up and you have video, power down and reconnect the keyboard and mouse only and try again.
If you have the memory card reader option and kids, check to make certain no one has inserted something into the memory card readers.  My kid inserted a quarter into one of the slots on my reader.  My workstation powered down pretty fast.   Consider moving the workstation to higher ground.
Last by not least, disconnect any additional optical drives you may have added.  Some SATA devices have both the standard PC power connector and the SATA power connector.  Do not connect both of these power sources to the same drive.  The drive will be damaged and your computer will not stay powered on for very long.
Should this all fail to resolve the issue, contact Lenovo support.  To make your support experience faster and more pleasurable, send them this list of things you tried.  If this list of possible fixes fails, it's probably a power supply or system board issue, and I would start with the power supply.
If an electronic device has a defect it will fail within the first 90 days.  Once you get it past the first 90 days, it is generally good for years.
    I hope this helps!!!

  • Display freezes at boot until screen moved

March 2010 Macbook Pro 15 - display freezes at boot from cold.
First image is dark purple, this lightens to patchy grey with vertical lines.
Move the screen and the display changes to account log in screen, but track pointer is frozen and screen gamma rises until display is whiteout with vertical lines.
Freeze and whiteout can last up to 90 seconds now, freeing for a fresh display each time screen is moved then freezing again.
Problem getting worse - lasts longer and now occurs on wake as well as boot.
Have updated everything, checked for malware, cleaned all app content, run disk utility/ repair, hardware check, reset permissions, reset PRAM, reset gamma, reset SMC - not helped. No history of damage!
Took to Apple - they replaced logic board and graphic card - problem not fixed.
Any advice to give me to give them when I go back to the bar?
    Thanks

    a. Drag the Fonts folder from the Mac OS 9 System Folder (not the Mac OS X System folder) to the desktop.
    b. Drag the Fonts folder from ~/Library/Fonts to the desktop.
    b. Restart the computer in Mac OS X.
    c. If this solves the problem....you have a corrupt font in one of the above font folders
    2. Remove incompatible third-party startup items.
    a. Start up in Safe Mode.(shift at startup)
    b. Open the Mac OS X hard disk.
    c. Drag third-party items out of ....
    /Library/StartupItems .......
/System/Library/StartupItems ... Place them on the desktop .... If you're unsure whether an item is a third-party item or an Apple-installed item, don't move it.
    d.Restart the computer.
Note.. If this resolves the issue, add the Startup Items one at a time until the symptom occurs again. That way you'll know which one is incompatible. Repeat these steps and remove the incompatible item.

    Hello ROBLAHAY,
I'm sorry to hear you are having this issue with your MacBook Air. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact configuration you are describing. If you are talking about using two external Thunderbolt displays (in addition to the internal display) with your Mid 2011 MacBook Air 11-inch, you may want to be aware that only a single external Thunderbolt display is supported on that model, as noted in the following article:
    3. How many Apple Thunderbolt Displays can I use with my Mac in OS X?
The table below indicates how many Thunderbolt displays can be connected to Thunderbolt-capable Mac computers in OS X.

  • [GTX770]No display output HDMI/Displayport when booting

I've recently upgraded to an Haswell setup with a MSI Z97 pc mate and MSI GTX770. The card seems to work fine when I use DVI output. However, when i try to use either hdmi or displayport I only get display output once i'm in windows. The bios and booting process give no output on either connection.
Is there something wrong with the GFX card, is there some bios setting i can try?

Thanks for the quick reply. Will this GOP UEFI bios make Displayport work on boot?
    don't know, maybe

I've never heard of GOP UEFI bios, so I don't have a clue what advantages I get with that.
its related to Win8 features, ultra fast boot and so on if you decide to use such

I was trying to install Windows 7 using boot camp and received the message that my hard disk drive had the wrong format.  I was able to eject the windows install disk, but now the only message I get is No bootable device - insert boot disk on a black screen display.

Nah. BCA set the DVD to boot from.
You cannot have any other disk drive with GPT, so pull those.
you have to change BOOTCAMP from FAT to NTFS during install but then it sees other drives and stops you there

My G4 Apple PowerBook will not boot further than pale blue/grey screen displaying "flashing file symbol / flashing ?"
Last previous action:  Used Firewire cable and "Target Mode" to copy files from G4 eMac to the PowerBook.
I worked from the eMac to the PowerBook, making the PowerBook the "Target".      Files seemed to transfer OK.     Won't boot from InstallDisc.  Holding down T on startup results in Target mode screen.   I have a G4 iMac and a G4 eMac.    Can I use either of these with Firewire cable to boot-up my PowerBook ?
I'm new to using this Communities & Forums Help.   Can someone please help me to get going again ! !     Thanks for your time.  Graflood

    Hello,
It sounds to me like the PowerBook is stuck in target disk mode.
It's expecting the iMac/eMac to be there when booting. Seeming it's not attached, it will show a flashing folder.
If your PowerBook internal drive is bootable, then simply hold down the option key when booting and select it's internal hard drive. That should boot your PowerBook into Mac OS X.

  • Blank Screen in Output Display

    Hi All,
I have a report output with REUSE_ALV_HIERSEQ_LIST_DISPLAY with custom PF Status and i have a custom button which call a CLass (Which perform some function at the background which the user doesn't notice) afterreturning from class
but now it displays a blank screen.
To overcome come this i called PERFORM OUTPUT again immediately after calling the class , now it diplays the out screen and user doesn't notice any difference but the problem is when i press the BACK button now it displays blank screen the back button.
When ever the control returns after calling the class it displays a blank screen
    form output.
    CALL FUNCTION 'REUSE_ALV_HIERSEQ_LIST_DISPLAY'
          EXPORTING
            i_callback_program       = v_repid

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
1.Check if v_repid is populating correctly or not
    2. pass ITAB & ITAB1 in capital letters
            i_tabname_header         = 'ITAB'
           i_tabname_item           = 'ITAB1'
Hope this will solve the error.

  • [OLAP DML] display on screen the output while the program is running

    Hi,
I'm running a script in AWM that is quite long, and I've placed some few 'show' so that I know what the program is doing, but it won't show on the screen the outputs until the program ends. I guess it writes all the outputs in a kind of buffer and release the content of the buffer at the end of the program.
How could I have it to release this buffer continuously?
    Thanks

i think the relational analogy would be an anonymous pl/sql block executing a list of commands while outputting a list of useful dbms_output.put_line log statements:
Just as with SHOW and olap worksheet cmd line, you cant see the running dbms_output log while the pl/sql program is running... you need to wait for it to complete before you can see the log.
You can write to a file and close/exit the file each time or you can write to log table and commit each time but i guess, some such heavy lifting is needed if you want to track the long running process mid-way.
NOTE: For regular operations like dbms_cube.build load/forecast/allocate process/steps, you can always run queries against CUBE_BUILD_LOG etc mid-way. But if it's pure olap dml actions being performed then no neat pre-built handle to check things mid-way exists.

  • Display error after boot

I'm having an issue where the display fails after boot, and displays only a fixed noise pattern. The screen looks completely normal through POST, GRUB, and when initially loading the kernel, when the display is still in a text mode. After that, the screen goes black for a brief second, after which it returns displaying the mentioned noise pattern. The system appears unresponsive after this, and the only option is to shut down the system with the power button.
Adding nomodeset or vga=794 to the kernel options resolves the issue. That is a temporary fix IMHO; I'd prefer something sturdier, which is my reason for posting. The issue appeared after a pacman -Syu about a week ago, I just haven't had time to look at it until now.
I've added i915 to MODULES in mkinitcpio.conf and rebuilt as described here in an attempt to fix it, but it did not seem to have any effect.
I believe this may be a KMS or a driver issue, but I do not know how to confirm or troubleshoot it. I would be grateful if anyone could shed some light on the issue, or point me in the right direction to find out what's causing the issue. Please let me know if any more logs should be attached. I'll try to attach a picture of the screen as well as a dmesg output from the failed startup later.

The bug is known, and a patch has been submitted: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80151. There's been no update since friday, so I wonder what the current status is, or if it's up for review at all.
Does anyone know how we can be notified when this patch hits the kernel?
