Default Sound Balance and Screen Brightness?

Recently my iBook G4 has been booting up with the screen brightness all the way down and the speaker balance all the way to the left. Did these settings somehow get set as the defaults? How do I change it back to normal so that I dont have to keep changing the settings every time I boot up?

There has been a bug in OSX in regards to sound balance for notebooks since 10.3.5 (IIRC). To fix it look for a free app called Balanced, that should correct the problem.
As for the screen brightness, I've never heard or seen anything like that.

  • Is there a way to save keyboard backlight and screen brightness settings?

It seems like my settings for the keyboard backlight and screen brightness reset to some sort of default after I don't use my macair for an extended period of time.  Is there a way to change these settings so it always stays at what it was last left on?

Are you making the changes through System Preferences?  If not, try that and they should hold.

  • Envy sleekbook speaker rattling and screen brightness won't go down

Hello! I have an hp envy that when I play any music on there is a rattling sound coming from the top left speaker. The sound stops when I press mute. I restarted the computer and tried to play a song file and it seemed fine until I started another program (windows movie maker) and the sound again started to rattle. It has not done this in months. I bought the computer in October 2014 and I remember hearing that rattling sound briefly, but then it stopped and I never noticed it again.
Also, just in the past day I noticed that my screen was super bright and in an effort to save energy I hit the key on the the keyboard and nothing happened. I went to settings and scrolled the brightness down but the screen did not change.

I've checked out the link and tried a few of those options however my screen brightness will not change. The slider in the options says that it is all the way down but the screen does not change. And when I press the keys on the keyboard for brightness nothing pops up on the screen saying that it is going up or down. This is just strange. It doesn't adjust when I unplug the power adapter either.

This is a pointer to a C program that can be used to adjust the screen brightness.

  • HAL and screen brightness

So for some reason I could change screen brightness, but only by setting the default in gnome-power-manager. In order to get the function keys to work too I had to play around with HAL config (using an example I found in an ubuntu bug report)
Given that HAL is now deprecated, what is replacing it for handling screen brightness?

  • Gnome-power-manager and screen brightness

gnome-power-manager appears to be screwing with my ability to adjust the screen brightness. Now there are only two brightness settings that work - the ones defined in gnome-power-manager settings.  Using the keyboard shortcuts "works" in that I can increase the brightness one level but then the change gets overridden.  Decreasing the brightness sets it at the minimum level then I can get it back without entering gpm settings.  This definitely work before the last update and I think for a while after.
Is there anyway I can get it to listen to manual adjustments?
Edit:  I think this was due to the latest hal update.

Adding "video" to MOD_BLACKLIST in /etc/rc.conf fixed this.  This is just a kernel module right? Nothing else will be screwed...?

I have Sony Vaio VGN-FZ38M with Nvidia 8400M GT. I used package 'nvclock' (it is in repo) to control lcd brightness, here site with more info: NVClock.  Some time ago I also configured Fn keys to work with it (on Ubuntu), but on Arch I didn't  manged but I didn't try hard (in general i don't need, my laptop is stationary all the time). Solution I've found somwehere in Ubuntu forums.

  • Off center default sound balance upon boot-up

Whenever I boot up my iMac the sound output balance goes all the way to the left speaker. I set it to center, but the next time I restart the computer it defaults back to the left. Any ideas? It has been that way since I got it.

I have the same problem with mi iMac 21.5 inch late 2009. I restarted it several times. Looks like we need to set its slightly to the right from the center to get the headphones and speaker to the center balance... I haven't found any solution yet...

  • XFCE and screen brightness meter

Recently I have notice a brightness meter shows up in the center lower part of my screen when i adjust the brightness on my laptop.  Was this due to something in the recent GNOME upgrade - it was never there before?
The reason I want to know is that is doesn't work... There is no actual value displayed, just a blank meter and I would like to get it working.  Something similar for volume would be good too but first things first

Update: it works fine when I unplug/plug the power to my laptop, but not when I change it manually...

  • Configuration of sound hardware and screen

    Hello
I had to format the hard and I lost the drivers CD.
I have downloaded the audio drivers from http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-61506.html and installed it.
However, the sound hardwars does not seem to work.
The same happned when I tried to install drivers for Wireless hardware. (wireless connection only worked after I used Fujitsu Siemens drivers!!)
    Any help?

did you install the drivers or simply unpack it? You have to install the drivers from your drivers folder under c:\ drive.

  • [SOLVED] ASUS Screen Brightness Not Working

I have been trying for a few hours to get my screen brightness to work properly. I'm on an ASUS Zenbook Prime UX31A with kernel 3.9.6-1. I'm using efibootmgr to boot.
According to the wiki page and numerous posts, I need to use the acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" boot parameter. When I set it using efibootmgr, the keyboard backlight keys work (Fn+F[34]), but the screen brightness keys (Fn+F[56]) do not work. I have tried the following in efibootmgr:
    # efibootmgr -c -w -d /dev/sda -p 1 -L "Arch Linux" -l '\EFI\arch\vmlinuz-arch.efi' -u initrd=EFI/arch/initramfs-arch.img root=UUID=d0b32080-84f0-4c6b-933b-f62b880afc09 ro rootfstype=ext4 efi_no_storage_paranoia elevator=noop acpi_osi=Linux add_efi_memmap
    # efibootmgr -c -w -d /dev/sda -p 1 -L "Arch Linux" -l '\EFI\arch\vmlinuz-arch.efi' -u initrd=EFI/arch/initramfs-arch.img root=UUID=d0b32080-84f0-4c6b-933b-f62b880afc09 ro rootfstype=ext4 efi_no_storage_paranoia elevator=noop acpi_osi=intel add_efi_memmap
    # efibootmgr -c -w -d /dev/sda -p 1 -L "Arch Linux" -l '\EFI\arch\vmlinuz-arch.efi' -u initrd=EFI/arch/initramfs-arch.img root=UUID=d0b32080-84f0-4c6b-933b-f62b880afc09 ro rootfstype=ext4 efi_no_storage_paranoia elevator=noop acpi_osi= add_efi_memmap
and a few others. The particularly peculiar thing is when I use a UEFI shell to boot with my script:
    echo -on
    \EFI\arch\vmlinuz-arch.efi root=UUID=d0b32080-84f0-4c6b-933b-f62b880afc09 ro rootfstype=ext4 add_efi_memmap efi_no_storage_paranoia initrd=EFI/arch/initramfs-arch.img elevator=noop acpi_osi="!Windows 2012"
it works fine (both keyboard backlight and screen brightness).
What am I doing wrong? My hunch is that I'm doing something wrong with the formatting of acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" but I'm pretty sure I've tried every combination of different quotes and escaping different things. It's also worth nothing that the "!" gets interpreted by bash in some of these permutations making efibootmgr not actually run.

    WonderWoofy wrote:
Because you are entering it in a shell, you need to escape some of the things in the acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" string.  So for example, the double quotes are intended to be entered exactly as is in the resulting efibootmgr entry, so these should be esacped since they would otherwise have a special meaning in the command line.  The same is true for the exclamation point.  So I think you would have to do:
    efibootmgr -c -w -d /dev/sda -p 1 -L "Arch Linux" -l '\EFI\arch\vmlinuz-arch.efi' -u "initrd=/EFI/arch/initramfs-arch.img root=UUID=d0b32080-84f0-4c6b-933b-f62b880afc09 ro rootfstype=ext4 efi_no_storage_paranoia elevator=noop acpi_osi=\"\!Windows 2012\" add_efi_memmap"
BTW, this is just a copy/paste of one of the entries above (slightly fixed).  I added a '/' to your initrd entry, as it is supposed to be an absolute path, not a relative one.
Edit: I too started out with a direct efibootmgr entry when getting to know UEFI.  But I think that a better solution is to use a boot manager.  I like gummiboot, but I also keep rEFInd set up as well.  By doing this, if you ever want to chane something on your kernel command line, you can just edit the config before reboot.  But I think that were it is really useful is if you need to modify the kernel command line before you boot, as it is not possible with a direct efibootmgr entry.  If you want to make it seem seamless, just set the timeout to zero in efibootmgr, and then if you want to get to the menu, you just hold the spacebar while booting.
The reason I wanted to use a direct efibootmgr entry was because I thought it would be faster.  But because gummiboot and systemd will actually give you the time it takes to boot which includes the time in the firmware (POST) as well as the time it takes to get through the boot manager, I have actually found that my system takes a whole 14ms from the end of POST to starting to load the kernel.
Edit2: BTW, I also quoted the entire srting of arguments on the kernel command line, which it need in order to be fed to the '-u' option as a single string.
I'm afraid that still doesn't work. I've tried similar things and tried that specifically.  In case you're wondering, the command you listed gives me the following output:
    $ sudo efibootmgr -v
    BootCurrent: 0000
    Timeout: 2 seconds
    BootOrder: 0000
    Boot0000* Arch Linux HD(1,800,96000,bee2185e-de97-4dc0-9614-830639991bc3)File(\EFI\arch\vmlinuz-arch.efi)i.n.i.t.r.d.=./.E.F.I./.a.r.c.h./.i.n.i.t.r.a.m.f.s.-.a.r.c.h...i.m.g. .r.o.o.t.=.U.U.I.D.=.d.0.b.3.2.0.8.0.-.8.4.f.0.-.4.c.6.b.-.9.3.3.b.-.f.6.2.b.8.8.0.a.f.c.0.9. .r.o. .r.o.o.t.f.s.t.y.p.e.=.e.x.t.4. .e.f.i._.n.o._.s.t.o.r.a.g.e._.p.a.r.a.n.o.i.a. .e.l.e.v.a.t.o.r.=.n.o.o.p. .a.c.p.i._.o.s.i.=.".\.!.W.i.n.d.o.w.s. .2.0.1.2.". .a.d.d._.e.f.i._.m.e.m.m.a.p...
I also tried putting the -u argument in single quotes so that I don't have to escape the double quotes or the !. That also didn't work. Thanks for your suggestions, I'd be happy to try more, I've tried a lot already to no avail :-(
count0 wrote:On my Asus X201E, the screen brightness keys only work when I add "acpi_osi=" to my kernel parameters, with no arguments. You could try that.
That's the third option I say that I tried in my original post.

  • How do I make screen brighter and the sound quality better with W8 OS on my iMac through bootcamp assistant like it is with my mac os ?

How do I fix my screen brightness on my imac  via W8 OS on my Imac through boot camp assistant and How do I fix the quality of the sound coming from my imac when in w8?

Alright, first off, thank you for your help so far. I really appreciate it. However, now I have a new problem that I need help with.
I did exactly what you've said to do, and it worked fine, the screen itself became brighter again, it was just too dim before and the brightness settings were all the way up, but after doing what you said to do, It's as it is when using my Apple/Mac OS. The sound coming from the computer speakers and all the other audio issues have been fixed as well. It all sounds like it should in terms of quality. It's just now that I did that, I'll shutdown my computer, or even restart it for some reason, and each and every single time I do that, It's all back to the way it was before installing anything, dim and poor audio quality. Until I install the drivers again like before.
Am I going to have to get used to that or something? Or is there an option I'm just not seeing that would make these preferences and instalations permanent until I input/imply otherwise??
    Thanks in advance!!
