Default SSID

I am setting up a controller to go into our existing environment. Our other controllers have a bunch of WLANs set up on them, all mapped to vlans on the switch, with their own SSIDs, keys, etc.
During the setup wizard, the 4400 wants to know the default SSID (Network name).
Can this be any SSID/WLAN? For instance, "OfficeData", mapped to WLAN/VLAN 235 that is trunked to the controller?

absolutely! Usually though I create a dummy WLAN with base configs. The remove it and configure my real said once the WLC is fully up. I find that easier than mucking around in the wizard

  • Default SSID for Cisco equipment

We have several wireless conference rooms equiped with Aironet 340 equipment. Most people have Cisco wireless cards for their PCs. I have a 802.11b card for my PC but not the Cisco brand. Short of asking a collegue to let me look through his setup screens to identify the SSID used, I thought I'd try the default SSID used when installing Cisco equipment. (ie. my Linksys card uses the word linksys for cards and hubs as default). Any advice?
    Kevin Rose

Although there's a good chance that using a "default" SSID will allow you to associate, the best method for easy/public access to a network is:
    - Set the "Broadcast SSID" option to On in the Access Point configuration,
    - Set the SSID on the client to NULL (empty).
This means that almost any client card will be able to associate. However, this means there's *no* security at all for the wireless network.
If the conference rooms are for company (internal) use, it's best to have a proper security policy for wireless access - such as using WEP/LEAP, connecting to the company RADIUS server.
If you still need security, but want company visitors to have wireless access, you'll need a strong firewall policy to stop the general public from accessing the corporate network.

  • How do I change SSID setting? Getting message "using network with default ssid'

Getting message "using network with default ssid'

First, let's address the biggest issue, the version of Firefox you are using is extremely old, out of date and insecure. Please update to Firefox 33 ASAP ([[Update Firefox to the latest version]])
After that, please give a bit more context on what exactly is going on. Keep in mind this is a Firefox support forum, we can't help you with Windows settings or setting up wireless networks.

  • Reset button returns to default SSID

    Hi All,
Not sure if anyone is as frustrated as me with the buttons on the side of the HH3, it seemes exceedingly easy to accidentally press the power off or rest buttons (on left and right side respectively).
What I want to know is whether there is a setting to make the reset button, not change back to the default settings?  (surely that is what the pin reset hole is for).
All I really want to do when I press the reset button is just restart the services on the router.
    Cheers,
    Nik.

  • Default SSID Disappears When Additional SSID Added

    Hi,
I have an issue when configuring an additional SSID for an autonomous AP, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.
Currently there is one SSID configured to use VLAN 1, Bridge Group 1, and the normal dot11Radio0 and FastEthernet0 interfaces. I can associate clients to this SSID without issue.
I then configure a second SSID, and assign it to VLAN 253, Bridge Group 253, and sub-interfaces dot11Radio0.253 and FastEthernet0.253. Clients can associtae with this SSID ok, but now clients are unable to associate with the original SSID on vlan 1.
Is there something key that I would have missed or any particular debug commands to run that will narrow down the problem?
APs are Aironet 1230B's running c1200-k9w7-mx.123-7.JA1.
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Sorted this.
I needed to specify vlan 1 with the encryption methods and ssid, eg:
    dot11 ssid wlan1
    vlan 1
    authentication open eap eap_methods
    authentication network-eap eap_methods
    int dot11Radio0
    encryption vlan 1 key 1 size 128bit 7 1234567890ABCDEF1234567890 transmit-key
encryption vlan 1 mode wep mandatory
    Thanks,

  • How Do I Change My SSID from the Default one?

I set up my WRT54G using the default SSID, now I want to change it. How do I do this?

Use a computer that is wired to the router.
Point your browser to 192.168.1.1  then enter your user name (if any) and password.   If you have not changed them from their default values, then the user name should be left blank, and the password is "admin"  (with no quotes).  This will take you to the router's setup pages.
Next, click on the "Wireless" tab, "Basic Wireless Settings" subtab.
You will see "Wireless Network Name (SSID) ".
Give your network a unique SSID.  Do not use "linksys", "Linksys", "linksys2", "Lynksis" or any similar names that will confuse your neighbors.
Also, make sure "Wireless SSID Broadcast" is set to "enabled".
Click on "Save Settings", then wait (3-60 seconds) for the screen to refresh.
    Exit your browser.
Reboot entire system:  modem, router, and computers.
On your computer, look for your new SSID and connect to it.

  • EA2700 smart wifi keeps broadcasting SSID bug even if wireless disabled

    Ver.1.1.39.145204 is the firmware.
Shutting off the 2.4 Ghz and the 5 Ghz wifi does not shut off the transmission of an SSID.
If allow wireless admin access is checked the SSID continues to transmit on both 2.4 Ghz and 5Ghz bands.
If unchecked then the SSID transmits only on the 5Ghz band.
In both cases the SSID being transmitted is the factory default SSID and it advertises an unsecured connection.  (router wipes out your security settings when you disable a radio)
On the plus side attempts to connect to this erroneously broadcast ssid have been unsuccessful but it still seems like a bad idea to be advertising an open connection 24 hours a day.
I have tried to report this to Linksys tech support.  Their answer was to reload the firmware.  Which I did - however it did not change the behavour of this SSID bug.  I asked them to report it as a bug and the lady declined.
Does anyone know how to shut of the SSID when the Wifi is disabled?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi eastavin. Did you delete some preferred networks on your computer when you disable both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network? You need to do this before connecting your computer wirelessly again, so that you would be able to know if your computer can still see and connect to your disabled network. Also, what is the OS of your computer? Is it a Windows computer or a Mac?

  • How do I change FiOS router's SSID & password?

FiOS installed today.  Default SSID & password too cumbersome.  How do I change?  Thanks.

Well, you just log into the router and you change them
The actual procedure depends on which router you have, the Actiontec or the Westel. I have an Actiontec, the basic procedure would be:
    1) Access the router with your browser: 192.168.1.1
    2) Log into the router:  User Name = admin and password = password1 (this is the usual value the Verizon Tech sets. If this doesn't work you probably need to hold the reset button on the back of the router to set it back to the default, then the name will still be admin but the password will be password)
    3) On the initial page after login there is an option to change the name and password in the lower left of the screen.
    4) To change the SSID, click on the Wireless Settings box near the top of the screen, then Basic Security Settings on the left side, change the SSID, then scroll down and click Apply.
I don't know the procedure for the Westel router.
While you are at it, I highly recommend you consider changing from WEP encryption to at least WPA -  stronger encryption, less likely to be broken, although WPA is not totally secure by any means.
I hope you enjoy FiOS TV, I do.

  • WRT 610N 5GHz SSID Name Changed!

I was just checking my setup via the web-based config page and noticed the name of the 5 GHz band had been changed - I am the only one who edits the configuration.
This makes me wonder about a situation a few weeks ago. I manage an open wireless network in a public setting. A patron came in with a newer laptop and could not connect to our wireless network. The laptop asked for the access point's Serial Number before we could go any further with accessing the free, unsecured/open wireless network that no one else seems to have trouble connecting to. Once I put in the number I was able to save our network as a profile on his computer. I wonder if doing this somehow accessed my configuration and automatically changed it? I have it set up so that only certain wired computers can change the configuration, but that I can access it from a wireless/DHCP to change. I did NOT log in, though, I just entered the number and it worked.
I thought leaving the network unsecured would avoid any issues like this. Are some laptops set up to require a log in/or the Access point's Serial Number? Is there some way around this?

Difficult to tell without knowing the exact SSID before and after.
You should have a look at WPS and how that works. The "serial number" suggests that this laptop tried to use WPS or similar to autoconfigure it's network connection to the WRT and I guess that way the router may have set the SSID to the default SSID for WPS configuration.

  • SSID change

I've been using a WRT54GS with a cable modem and Apple computors (wired/wireless) the last couple of weeks. Due to an "old" USB-stick (D-Link DWL 122) I'm forced to settle with WEP; to increase security, MAC-address filtering is turned on.
Today, while (wirelessly) browsing the net, I got a message that I was no longer connected to the internet. I checked my connection an much to my surprise the (default) SSID was changed from "linksys" to "linksys_XYZ####" (I cannot recall the additional letters and numbers). The wired computor was still able to connect to the net.
Entering the web server setup I realized that the SSID was indeed changed. Upon manually removing the addeed characters and restarting the router, everything worked properly.
    Anyone having a similar experience?
    Regards/zolblu

    1. WEP is hackable.
    2. leaving the SSID to linksys tells a hacker/wardriver to use "admin" as the default password!
    Change your SSID
Change your admin password to something longer than 8 characters (with upper/lower case letters and numbers) if WEP has to be used then use the highest level of WEP encryption.
The hacker has most likely now got all you MAC addresses if he has been on your router. i would now go out and buy a USB WPA stick that works with your Mac and use WPA encryption with more than 20 characters for the passkey.
This story is a prime example of how to get hacked.

  • WRVS4400N randomly started broadcasting default open network!!

Seriously, can someone riddle me this.
Ever since acquiring this device, I have enabled a single wireless network, not broadcasting a SSID, and locked down with WPA2-Personal security. I've assumed all has been well for the past few months, and connecting to the network on a variety of wireless devices has certainly given me no cause for concern.
All that has just changed. On an Android 2.2. device which has been configured previously to join the network, I noticed that I could no longer connect. Amongst the various broadcasting SSIDs picked up on the device was an open network called "ciscosb". Thinking that an open network was pretty weird in this neck of the woods, I proceeced to connect to it, at which point I realised that "ciscosb" was the default SSID for this model of router and its hardware address indicated this was my very own router.
I checked and triple checked in the router's admin interface, and my original secure network was the only network configured.
I disabled and renabled wireless on the router, and what do you know, "ciscosb" disappeared, and I could connect to my original network fine.
So, while I'm resetting passwords for just about everything and before going on a rant to potential customers about why they should avoid this product for life, anyone have any ideas?
Firmware version:V2.0.1.3-ETSI for what it's worth.

i've just checked my network settings and found:
    Wireless LAN
    Wireless IP Address:
    192.168.1.2
    MAC Address:
    00:1C:XX:XX:XX
    Network Mode:
    B/G/N-Mixed
    Wireless SSID:
    ciscosb
    Channel Bandwidth:
    20MHz
    Wireless Channel:
    6- 2.437 GHz
    Security:
    Disabled
    SSID Broadcast:
    Enabled
But it's still broadcasting a different SSID (and no ciscosb), with encryption enabled and different channel bandwith.
The router has been up since about 59 days, with firmware-version                V2.0.1.3-ETSI.
It's also "lost" the WAN, LAN, DHCP, ... settings, but is still using the previous set-up values.
    cheers

  • Disabled SSID Broadcast, but it's still broadcasting

OK, here's a wierd one. I was able to finally disable my SSID broadcast the other day. But I noticed that it is still broadcasting. I rechecked the configurations twice. Any idea why it's still broadcasting even though I set it up to NOT broadcast?

    Did you change your SSID?
    Or using default SSID (linksys)?
    Try...
    - Reset Router
    - Change SSID  > save
    - Check wireless connection
    - Disable SSID broadcasting > save
    - Run 'Site survey' (or 'View available wireless networks' on Win XP)
Is your NEW SSID still detected?

  • Does AP1131G support feature 'multiple ssid'?

    Hello
I've checked in feature navigator and I've seen AP1131G doesn't support multiple ssid feature. It's right?
If yes, What is replacement AP for AP1121?
I can't order old good AP1121 so I need good replacement for it.
    Thank you!

    Hi Pavel,
Just to add a clip to the good tips from Dan and Lucien (+5 points each guys :)
    From the 1130 Quick Start Guide;
When the access point configuration is set to factory defaults, the first SSID that you create by using the Express Security page overwrites the default SSID, which has no security settings. The SSIDs that you create appear in the SSID table at the bottom of the page.** You can create up to 16 SSIDs on the access point.

    Hope this helps!

  • My iphone 4s and ipad 2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi but non-mac lap top has no issues

my iphone 4s and ipad2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi.
About three days ago the ability to connect came and went and the connection never lasted more than 10-15 minutes; it has not been able to connect since last night. I do not think it's my wifi router as non-mac lap top has no issues. I have seem many similar questions posted.

Reboot your router by removing all power from it for about 15 seconds. Also, if your router still has its default SSID (such as LINKSYS, DLINK, NETGEAR, etc) change the SSID to something unique. Note that all other devices on your network will have to be reconnected if you change the name, but if the name is still the default that is most likely your problem.
If the SSID is not the default then the reboot should fix it.
