Default Still Clip Length

I know how to change the duration of a still clip, but is there a way to change to default from 5 seconds to something else?

Hello Rvenne,
yes there is:
in the photo pane simply drag the duration slider under the preview window to the desired duration. This works for both, pics dragged from the photo pane and pics imported from a folder.
hope this helps

  • Change default import clip length

Is there a way to change the default import clip lengths? It seems the default import length is 5 sec (00:05:00). So all photos import at 5 seconds. I would like to import all my photos to come in at 1 frame (00:00:01).

When you select a photo in the Photos Media pane, does not a "Photo Settings" window appear? You can drag the slider all the way out to 60 seconds if you like.

  • Imported clip length

I am using iMovie HD 6.03 to import Video 8 via a Canopus ADVC-55.
There seems to be a default imported clip length of just under 20 minutes.
I cannot find a way to adjust this, or a relative article in the iMovie help.
    Can anybody advise?

that indicates, you're trying to import to an ext. harddrive, which has the wrong 'format' (fat32=Windows...)
before using an ext. HDD for video processing, you have to use the DiskUtility and 'erase' (format) the mepty drive to hfs/Mac...

  • Can you change still clip duration default setting?

I create wedding videos, and at the end of my movie I add about 100 still clips as edited highlights. In older versions of imovie you were able to alter the length of still clips created in the preferences to whatever time you wanted. In this newer (better?!?) version when I have created all my still clips I have to click on each one individually to alter the time duration. The default setting is 5 seconds and I can't find anywhere that you can change this. It takes me AGES to do this individually, anybody got any ideas of a better way? Cheers.

I can't necessarily recommend this for it can lead to project corruption. It's possible to manually edit the text of the iMovie project file, changing the playtime duration of all your still clips to the duration you want.
    1. In iMovie, double-click on one of your still clips. Write down the name of its source file. Quit iMovie 6.
    2. In the Finder, make a duplicate of the project. Work on the duplicate.
    3. In the Finder, open the duplicate project package. (Control-click on the project icon and choose "Show Package Contents" from the popUp menu.)
    4. You'll see two iMovie project files loose in the window that opens, plus some folders. One of the project files has a tilde (~) in its name and one does not. Our goal is to edit the file that does NOT have the tilde. (The tilde file is type of backup.)
    5. Launch TextEdit. (In your Applications folder.) Drop the non-tilde project file onto the TextEdit icon in the Dock.
    6. Use TextEdit's search function to search for the string that defines the play-time of each still clip, now 5 seconds. For PAL, that string is "<integer>125</integer>". For NTSC, it is "<integer>150</integer>".)
    7. For each still, you want to change the 125 to some other number. For PAL, the number you want is 25 X the number of seconds to play.
If the only clips in your project that play for 125 are your stills, you can safely use the Replace All command to replace all with the strings at the same time. Be sure to include the tags <integer> and </integer.
If there are others that play for 5 seconds, you'll need to examine each clip individually, using the sample name you wrote down to see if the clip uses a similar name.
    8. Save the modified file and close that TextEdit window.
    9. Go back to the Finder and double-click on the project package to open it in iMovie 6. If everything worked as intended, all your stills should play with a new length.

  • Setting clip length on multiple stills

I am creating stop motion animations using still images. How can I set the clip length of multiple stills with one action? At the moment I am doing each one individually.

Select the images. Control-D. Type in a duration.

  • Change Duration of set of still clips

I'm trying to change the duration of 1,115 still photo clips in the timeline (about 2.2mb jpegs each).  After about 2.5 hours of effort to get them into the timeline I've selected them all and hit control D to highlight the duration thing in the middle of the screen.  I type in 46.45 so that all those clips will play back close to 24fps and it changes to 14 hours.  I tried typing in 2 minutes = 8 hours, then 10 minutes = 8 hours.  I don't get it.  No matter what number I type into the duration it changes by hours.
Oh yeah, I changed the import setting for still clips to the lowest possible amount of time and it still brought them into the timeline at 4 sec. each.
Help.  Is there some special way to get the duration to stay what you type into it?
I know I'm running FCPX on a bare bones system but it really shouldn't take two days to make a 45 second timelapse.
MacBook Pro Intel core 2 duo 2.4 Ghz, 4GB RAM, Gforce 8600M GT

The default length for stills is settable in the FCP X  Preferences Window under the Edit tab.  I believe 4 sec is the number set as default when you got the program.  One way you might be able to do it is to select all the clips in the timeline (pictures that is), then make them into a new compound clip.  Then select the compound clip and hit COMMAND R (for the re-timing frame to pop up).  Drag the retiming handle at near the top right (2 small vertical bars) of the selected compound clip to the length of time you want.  I tried this with retiming video clips made into a compound clip and it works, so I am thinking it will probably also work with stills.  Hope this helps.

  • 'Default Still' graphics are getting substituted on export - bug?

Much of my work is on TV commercials with multiple excecutions of on-sceen pricing/region-specific URLs etc. My usual workflow is to create the initial overly graphic for the first ad using Default Still. Once the client is happy with this I duplicate the initial Default Still in the Project window, then I edit the duplicate to create the text for the second ad and so forth - thus maintaining all the layout and formatting from the first implementation.
All the versions of the ads play correctly in the Program Viewer, i.e. correct graphic variations are married to the right ads. I use the Export command to create an individual .mov master of each version of the ad. I check the ad I'm exporting is correct by scrolling back and forth in the Export Settings preview pane, and again the correct graphics are still in place.
Now here's the problem... I've recently had several ads sent back to me with the wrong text on them. I've checked them on the sequence and they're correct, no screw-up on my part. What seems to be happening here is the Export process is (seemingly at random) using the text from my initial Default Still rather than the amended duplicates that I have placed in the sequence. Frustratingly, Premiere correctly displays the correct graphics at all stages until I've squeezed it all down to a master. This is a workflow I've been doing for a while, but this oddity has only reared it's head in the past month or so. The only workaround I've found is to watch every exported .mov start-to-finish and when I spot an error I restart Premiere and re-export with my fingers crossed!

Here's what has worked well for me, never any weird issues. Create your "default" still and place as needed on the timeline, add dissolves, etc.
Now one by one, double-click a title on timeline to open Titler, then hit button at upper left for "New Title Based on Current". Name it, update the "new" title text and exit. Now right-click that "default" still on the timeline and select " Replace > With Clip from Bin". This replaces the "default" title with the new one you'd just made, keeping any attributes already applied to "default".
An example for me is a dance recital with 40 acts. I create my first title, add to timeline and make it the right length, add the fade in/out on the ends. This is now a "template" for me with correct font, sizing, layout. I will then copy/paste that same title between every act (with correct length and transitions applied already). Will then go through and update/replace each "template" title into correct title for that spot in the program and formatting is consistent throughout the program on all titles.
    Hope this helps you

  • Clip length and Workflow with iPhoto (I need a pdf for a final...)

I'm feeling like a total lunkhead after taking a number of passes at this in the past year.
    Short question:
How do I control clip length in iMovie? Does it work one way when you bring images in and another way when you bring in a slideshow?
    Long question:
I need to get from images organized in iphoto to a pdf or ppt presentation and right now this means I am organizing the photos in iPhoto (a breeze), exporting as wmv and then importing this into iMovie. In iMovie I am just adding a title on the first "slide".
Now I am trying to make sure I have no dissolve effects between slides, make sure I can control the length of each slide and to get this exported into a "manually" advanced pdf.
At some point I would like to get some vector based linework into my presentations as well and for some reason I am bypassing Keynote in the above setup.
Can anyone help me get to a manual pdf so I can get out of the ditch here?
    Thanks for any help.

It sounds like you've got a somewhat complicated issue.
I'm simply trying to create match a single image file with a 35:00 min podcast so I result in a movie that I can upload to Vimeo (they don't accept audio, only video). I'll watch your post to see if anyone can explain making still images longer (mine caps at 10:00 min).

  • Still Clip Duration

I'm just starting to use Imovie HD, and i'm having problems editing the length of still clips. I can make them as short as i want, but can't make them longer by dragging in the editing bar. I looked in help, and where they tell you to double click the photo and change the duration, my window comes up with the duration un editable.
    Help!
    TIA!!

    Welcome to the forums.
Double-clicking an original still will bring up a window with the clip's name, size, editable duration, etc. If you accidentally double-click an adjacent transition, the duration will not be editable in the window. If you applied the Ken Burns effect, the window also will not let you edit the duration. In both cases however, the duration can be changed by going back to the "source." Use the transition menu to change the transition, and use the Photo menu to adjust the duration of the Ken Burns effect.

  • Clip Length

I am trying to make an animated movie. How can I make all my clip lengths, several hundred, the same length in one go?   eg 0.1 of a second.

    oldscotsbloke
From your prior posts, you appear to be working with Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 7 64 bit.
Are these clips - videos or stills? For now I will assume stills.
For now I will assume that you are set up for NTSC (30 frames per second) and not PAL (25 frames per second).
If you want all clips with duration of 0.1 second
    a. import, take to Expert workspace Timeline, select all, right click anywhere in the selection, select Time Stretch, and set the Time Stretch dialog Duration field to 0.1 second which would be 3 frames. So you set the timecode Duration readout in the Time Stretch dialog to 00;00;00;03 (hours;minutes;seconds;frames).
    or
    b. BEFORE importing any, go to Edit Menu/Preferences/General and set the Still Image Duration to 3 frames.
Then AFTERWARD all stills imported into the program will have a duration of 3 seconds until you go back to preferences and change the setting.

  • Is Auto Adjust clip lengths a possibility?

Is it possible to auto adjust clip lengths, something like Select All and Auto Adjust to a given length? I goofed around with a variety of clip lengths and would like to revert to the default length without manually adjusting every clip.

I actually liked having a variety of lengths that went with the timing of the music, but the built in zooms and fades didn't work with what I did. Also, it seemed like reducing clips down to 1 second caused the replay to look jumpy.

  • IMovie Text over Still Clips

This is an iMovie HD, not iMovie 6 problem.
No matter what I try, I cannot place a caption over a still picture on my movie. I type the text, check off "Over Black" and choose an effect to drop the text onto the movie. I select "Preview" and it works fine. But when I run "Play" the text will not appear. I even followed the advice of a "Genius" at my nearby Apple Store.
    Any help would be appreciated.

ill take stab at it , im not sure what you meant by still clip , wouldn't any still clip have to assigned a certain amount of editing, or time frame using the Burns effect? after doing that , then yes you would drag the title on to the clip from the titles window , not where you put the text , so if for instance you chose 3D spin , you choose your color , and font , and enter the text , then drag the "3D spin" on to the clip , not the text , and unless you are creating a seperate clip , by clicking on over black , the title should be the same time as the clip you are adding it to , and if there are already transitions at either end , you have to split the clip and drag the title to the split ,, what I did like about the windows movie maker when I used a PC , was you were not limited to just "over black" as a title back ground , you could choose the color , and the transparency of the letters or am i missing someting?

  • Clip length revert in themes

    Hey all--
I'm an iMovie newbie with a question about themes. I'd like to use some of the theme elements, but whenever I drop in a clip it reverts to the original clip start point and doesn't retain any of my clip length edits. Do I need to prepare my clips differently or am I missing a setting or..? Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help!

    Welcome to the forum, Myrah.
You got it just about right; you're not missing something. There's a bug in themes that causes a clip placed in a Drop Zone to play from the beginning of the clip's FILE, not the beginning of the clip.
The trick is to export (share) only that clip to a Full Quality movie, then import THAT movie to the project and drop it in the Drop Zone.
To export (share) just one clip, check the "Share selected clips only" checkbox in the Share dialog window.
After the theme has been rendered you can discard the clip.

  • Compressor quality changes with clip length

    Hello,
Im on a max OSX 10.6.5, compressor 3.5.3, FCP 7.0.3.
I am taking footage off the SONY XDCAM, running it through the XDCAM Transfer software and having it wrapped in quicktime so i can edit in FCP. The project was filmed in HD 1280x720, XDCAM HD422, 720p60(50 mb/s).
    The destination is SD DVD.
Problem- Since going from HD to SD can be a bit tricky, I made a half dozen sample compression clips. I found that the compressor DVD 90min Best quality preset with a slight bitrate change to look the best. When I compress the 3 minute clip, it looks really great. But when I compress the entire sequence (only 83 minutes.. well within the 90 minute preset) it looks like garbage. The difference is night and day. What is the issue? suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Brian

Sorry for the slow reply, I hit the road for a while shortly after posting...but I'm back.
Also, I'm embarrassed to say that the problem turned out to be the nut holding the tool (in other words, user error). It doesn't matter how carefully one changes the clip length if you somehow forget that clicking on the clip then selecting "pasteover at playhead" does not paste the selected clip but pastes whatever is in memory. As I'm sure you can guess, the clip copied earlier was 3:12 in length.
    Sheesh.
Sorry for the false alarm, and thanks to both of you for the help.

  • Photo clip lengths - trouble adjusting!

I have a new project consisting of 80-100 photos, all with a transition in between. Via Project Properties (Apple Key - J), I can set the photo duration but it's only in even increments -- 2 seconds, 3 seconds, 4 seconds, etc. I want to pick 2 1/2 seconds but the slider scale won't let me do that.
If I try to select just a photo properties (Apple Key - R) manually, from 2:00 to 2:50, it auto-adjusts it to 3:20. Having it set to that (or higher) makes the overall project runtime too long. Can I get it to something between 2 and 2 1/2 seconds??

There is an interplay between clip length or photo length and the length of transitions.
For example, if you have two photos each with length 4 seconds and 0 frames, and a transition between them of 30 frames (1 second), then each photo will have a length of 3 seconds and 15 frames. Note: this behavior can be changed in either Preferences or Project Properties: I can't remember which (this applies to clips).
Further, when you set the length of the photo to 2:50, you are really setting it to 2 seconds and 50 frames. In the NTSC system, one second is approximately 30 frames, so 50 frames yields 1 second and 20 frames ( or a total of 3 seconds and 20 frames, as you observed.)
Two and a half seconds in this notation would be 2:15.
