Default Transition Command

I use this often in FCE. However, in one sequence in my project, this command is dimmed under Effects. I am also unable to use the quick Apple T command. But when I switch to any other sequence in the same project, the default transition (cross dissolve) is not dimmed. Within the Effects browser under transitions, the cross dissolve is underlined, which I assume means that it is the default. All of the above holds true for the default audio transition as well.
I'm sure it is a simple adjustment, but FCE Help and searching Discussion has not yielded an answer

Thank you. It was the auto select button on the right.
I have used your FDE 3.5 editing Workshop, It's good. But for an intuitive half-a*d professional like myself, I would suggest approaching the pan-and-scan section using key frames. Pan-&-zoom was the most difficult shift I went through when I converted from PC-based Roxio Creator 8 to Apple FDE.
I place a key frame at the first frame of the still, double click the clip so it's in the browser and canvas, shrink the canvas window to 25% or 12% so I can grab the handles to expand or shrink the still (maybe even drag the still off the canvas); next go to the last frame of the clip and left-arrow in ~10 frames (more if I was a longer ending pause) and control-K in a 2nd key frame; now I blow-up/shrink/move the still and I'm done. The canvas image is small but it's big in the browser so I can see what's happening. Once I was comfortable with this more intuitive approach, I better understood key frames; now I can place a key frame in the middle of a long still to deliver more sophisticated motion.

  • Default Transition Not Always Working

I use CMD+D quite a lot to save time dragging the Cross Dissolve to clips.   But, it sometimes just doesn't work.  I can sit hitting CMD+D as much as I want (with the CTI on the cut) and nothing happens.  If there was nothing to cross dissolve with I'd understand, but if I drag the Cross Dissolve manually and drop it in place the dissolve is perfectly OK.
So, in what circumstances will CMD+D not do anything yet dragging the Cross Dissolve works fine?   It's frustrating not knowing when it will and won't work.

So, in what circumstances will CMD+D not do anything yet dragging the Cross Dissolve works fine?
Ctrl/Cmd+D will not drop a video transition (or Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+D for audio) if you don't have the desired track(s) targeted. Those are the selectors at the left end of the Timeline panel; those labeled Video 1, Video 2, Audio 1, Audio 2, etc. are those that control where transitions are applied. The track selectors also dictate which tracks are subject to the Previous Edit (PgUp)/Next Edit (PgDn) commands; tie those together and you can fly through adding transitions...
...or, if you have a pile of video transitions to add, hold down Alt (maybe Opt on Mac? can't recall...) and select the video clips or video portions of clips you want to transition between. You don't even need to have the track targeted; just go to Sequence > Apply Default Transitions to Selection, and video transitions will be applied. If you don't "solo" the video portions, this command will also simultaneously add audio transitions, so you can be as selective as you need to be.
You can also copy and paste transitions, so if you've customized one, e.g. direction of a wipe, you can quickly apply it using the first method (Previous/Next Edit and Paste).

  • How do I change the default transition?

the default transition in fc express hd is a 1-second cross dissolve. how do i change the default transition to a 5-frame cross dissolve so that every time i hit command-T the 5-frame cross dissolve will be applied?
    thanks for the help.

thanks. i did just that and it works, however i was hoping to make life a keystroke or two easier so i wouldn't have to always mouse up and drag the favorite down to the timeline. i wish i could just command-T and make it happen.
    thanks for your help.

  • Default Transitions with Keyboard

Hello, I'm trying to speed up my editing by using the keyboard. However, I find that entering the default transition using they keyboard is a multi-step process and I might as well go back to the mouse.
Here are the steps i'm taking, if anyone has any suggestions on how to stream-line this process, please let me know.
I use "V" to select the edit (audio and video), then I hit "apple+T" to add the default transition. This only adds it to the video track and I have to hit the keys for the default audio transitions.
-- Is there a way to enter one set of keys for BOTH audio and video?
-- Sometimes, FCP centers the transition on the cut but does not do the same for the above tracks. Is there anyway to get it to center the transition for ALL video tracks (again, I'm trying to use they keyboard commands)?
Any suggestions on how to use these or other keyboard short cuts would be greatly appreciated.
    Ines

There are only two ways to add both video and audio transitions, one with the edit overlay using overwrite/insert with transition, or the shortcut menu on the edit point.
The transition always defaults to centered on edit. That only changes when there isn't sufficient media available on both sides of the edit point.
Technically V is not necessary. If the playhead is at the edit point and the timeline is active Cmd-T will do the video transition. Cmd-Opt-T will do the audio transition.

  • What is the default key command for the COMMAND key?I seem to have changed it somehow along the way and now when I push the command key it hides all windows or shows desk top I need to correct this as soon as possible-.any ideas?

What is the default key command for THE COMMAND (apple) key? I seem to have changed it somehow along the way and now when I push the command key (only) it hides all open windows and shows the desk top and when I push it again it shows all windows again...I need to return to default A.S.A.P. just this one key...Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

    Go to
     > System Preferences > Keyboard
Click on the 'Keyboard' tab and hit the 'modifier keys...' button. You can see and change the defaults there.
As I'm not sure if all the labels are the same in Lion, he's a screenshot from Snow Leopard. It should be similar enough:

  • How to modify a default transition?

how to do you change the values for the default transition?
for exmple, i want to apply a cross dissolve to a series of clips. but i want to change
the duration of the cross-dissolve before i apply this transition.
i can see how to edit a single instance of the transition, but i cannot see how to change
    that for all instances.
    thanks in advance.

thanks. it seemed like it worked. once. but when i tried to modify the default trans
ition time, it would not accept the new value.
also can you explain what is the difference between the unit that are used.
the entry screen asks for frames, but if you look at the duration in the effects
edit window the units appear to be min.sec.micros.

  • [SOLVED] Alpine - Error sending: No default posting command

Hi, I have installed the Alpine mail client yesterday, and it all works nicely, except I can't send mail. Everytime I try I get this message:
Error sending: No default posting command
I have tried googling around, and from what I understand Alpine uses sendmail by default, but I haven't got it installed, nor I can find it in the repos. Is there any way I can change this? And what can I use to send mail?
    Thanks.

I haven't dug it enough yet, and I'm not sure that this is possible, even though Alpine is very customisable as far as I can see.
I'll let you know if I find anything

  • How do you set default transition length?

Have dissolve as default, where do I go in order to tell what default transition length I want? Thanks.

Where is the Effects Tab? Sorry, am a rank beginner in FCP. You don't mean to go up to the dropdowns at the top "File...Edit...View..." and so on, and select Effects, because I'm not seeing any place to do that. Where's the Effects tab? Can't seem to bring it up. Thanks.

  • Can i set a default transition for final cut pro x

Can I set a default transition for Final Cut Pro X? I'm doing a multicamera edit and would like all edit points to have a cross dissolve transisiton. Can I make this happen by default?

Cross dissolve is the default transition. It's applied with Cmd-T.

  • How to set default transition duration?

I can't believe Premiere would be so lacking in something so basic that is available in every other NLE I've used, but I can't find a way to set a default audio transition that also allows me to set half a second and not the 1 second default. I don't want to apply a lot of cross fades and then having to go to each of them and typing 15 and enter.
Also, there is an easy way to save any filter as a user preset, including combinations of filters as one preset, but the same is not possible for transitions, audio or video, am I missing something?

    Jim Simon wrote:
Maybe I misunderstand but...you can.  Right click any transition to set it as the default.  Alan told you in post 1 how to set the duration.
    So...what's the gripe?
I'm talking about saving transition presets with any duration you want, as well as different types of transitions, like having a cross dissolve that is half a second, another that is 2 seconds, a dip to black that is three, and an exponential fade that is 2 seconds, etc, all accessible in the top Presets folder, instead of having to dig inside a folder that is inside another folder in the effects tab. This is something you can do easily in every other NLE I can remember, Edius, FCP classic, and Vegas if I remember correctly, but I haven't used the last one in a while, although I remember clearly that you can set a script in it to do anything you want, including a fade in and fade out. Why isn't something so basic in Premiere, especially when you can save any filter as a preset? I understand that not all features can be implemented at once, but this is something that has been on NLEs for at least the past ten years. Isn't it about time that Premiere catches up to the rest?
I totally agree with you. Right now the way transitions works (doesn't work, actually) is completely utterly retarded.
You can only set ONE default transition. Only ONE, because there is NEVER going to be a time when you want to frequently use 2, 3, 4 different transitions. NEVER.
You have to dig into the *system preferences* menu to set the duration of that ONE transition. And you can only set ONE duration for ONE transition. There will never ever be a time anyone would ever want to have a few frequent transitions with different durations for each. No, we all only ever need ONE transition with ONE duration for EVERY SINGLE PROJECT WE DO.
Can you tell that I'm frustrated?

  • Can't apply default transitions or copy attributes

I have no means of getting Premiere to apply default transitions.
I select clips, try via Sequence menu, nada
I place the cursor on the timeline Ctrl-D, nothing happens
I copy a clip and paste attributes - NOTHING. No change at all.
Could there be any setting I didn't set? Default transitions are set, and I can copy/paste audio attributes/clip effects, but nothing happens in Video.

Select clip and then go to select Sequence / Apply Default Transition To Selection (you can make this into a Keyboard Shortcut) this will make a transition at beginning and end of the clip at the same time. If you only want just one side, select the side with the Roll Edit or Ripple Trim tool and hit Apply Default Transition To Selection.
If you want to put a cross dissolve between a whole bunch of clips. Select clip and hit Apply Default Transition to Selection.

  • How do you apply a transition to multiple clips? NOT using default transition.

    Using CS6
I have videos on one track and titles on another track. I want to apply dissolve to black for the videos and gradient wipe to the titles.
Right now I have to assign dip as the default transition, select all the video, and apply default transition. Then find the gradient wipe, change *that* to the new default transition, select all the titles, and apply default transitions. Then I have to go back and reset my default transition to gradient wipe since that's my "main" default transition.
Uhhhh... why can't we just select a bunch of clips and drag ANY transition to the selection and have it apply just like regular effects? Why force us to do this complicated singular default transition dance?

    Hi D. Vivian,
    d. vivan wrote:
What you need to do is to select the clips and enable trim (some red brackets will appear at the beginning or end of the clips).
I just marquee drag with the Roll tool to select the edit points.
    d. vivan wrote:
Then, right click and Apply default transition.
Or use the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + D (Windows) or CMD + D (Mac).

  • Are the default key commands completely different in L9 compared to L8?

    Hi Guys,
I have had to reset my key commands to the defaults, and seem to have lost all my old key commands.
My commands with Logic 8 were the absolute default ones (I didn't change any of them!!) - here are some of the ones I used a lot:
Pressing 0 on the numeric keyboard was always stop. "/" on the numeric keyboard was always cycle on/cycle off.
Pressing control and using the up/down/left/ right arrows (the ones in between the QWERTY keyboard and the number pad) always zoomed in and out, vertically and horizontally respectively...
Pressing the "C" key was always click on/click off. Now it's cycle on/off.
My question is... can someone confirm that the Logic 9 default key commands are completely different, and that these shortcuts above have all gone?
I know I can set them up again, I guess I'm just puzzled that so many of the main commands would completely change their defaults for L9!
    Cheers and thanks,
    Mike

Some of the more in-depth key commands have changed slightly , but the standard ones are still the same.
Most of these you've described are ( or should be still ) exactly the same.
Make sure that you are still using the standard keyboard layout and language in *'Apple/system preferences/international/input menu'*
Mine swiched to German a few months ago and I had no idea what was going on.

  • Apply default transitions not working when applied next to AE Compositions

I'm kinda pulling my hair out with this. My default transition is Dip to Black, duration of 2 seconds, and centered at cut. When I select a bunch of clips in the timeline with After Effects compositions mixed in and apply the default transition, the transition around the AE Compositions is ALWAYS changed to 1 second, centered at start/end. And I have to manually go in there and change it to 2 seconds, centered at cut.
    Here's a video describing it:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDsyXhE7Ohk
Why does it do this, and how do I get it to stop?

Your AE comps don't have handles.  There's no extra video there for the transition.
