Defaulting to connect to unsecured wireless networks

I noticed that the iPhone's wifi defaults to unsecured networks, even if there are stronger secured networks that are saved in your phone. As an example, by my house I can view optimum wifi in the list, but it is too far away to actually connect to. However, my phone will try to connect to it instead of the house's secured wifi network which is saved in the phone. I am suggesting that secured networks be given priority over unsecured ones, or it should at least be a feature that you can toggle in your wifi settings. Thank you for your time.

Wi-Fi Auto-Join
Your device remembers the network and login information so you can automatically reconnect to that subscription Wi-Fi network whenever you are in range.
If you don't want your device to automatically join the subscription Wi-Fi network, you can disable the Auto-Join behavior in by tapping the chevron next to the subscription Wi-Fi network name:

IPad 2 can only connect to unsecured Wireless network. It won't connect to my secured network at home or at work

Two days ago my ipad 2 with (wifi only) will not connect to my secured network even though it show's up as available with a strong signal. It keeps rejecting my password. I brought the Ipad to work and the same issue. However I am able to connect to an unsecured wireless network with no issue. Is this a network/router issue or an ipad issue? If it's a network issue what is the fix? calling my internet provider to change router settings?

- I've used the correct pw (it worked till 2 days ago)
- I use road runner from Time warner, not sure of the mac address filtering
-Security is WPA PSK.
I called road runner to request they remove my pw and see if i can access my wireless if that works which i believe it will then it has to be a security issue. I'm using a 802.11n wifi access point, if that means anything.

Need help connecting to BEFW11S4 wireless network

A friend I visit often has a BEFW11S4 router. Other friends who visit connect immediately to the unsecured wireless network. Unfortunately, for unknown reasons I'm unable to connect with either of my laptops, so have to plug in the LAN. This is the only place I've ever had a problem connecting to a wireless network.
My laptops are Toshiba Satellites, running Windows XP Home & Office, respectively. Sometimes they won't even recognize the network, or when they do, just won't connect. I've gone through the tutorial and all settings numerous times, turned off the firewall, turned off Norton and still no luck. Any help getting me connected is appreciated. Thanks.

In your computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. Delete any existing entry for your friend's network. Reboot your computer. Return to "Preferred Networks" and add your friends SSID. Then select this SSID and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings". Reboot computer. You should login automatically when computer boots up.

Unable to connect to home wireless network with my iPod touch

I've had my iTouch for several months now and I'm still not able to connect to my wireless network at home. I've tried the resets and other suggestions I've found in the discussion groups but nothing has worked.
I have an older Netgear Router MR814v2 and it is unsecured. It is attached to my old desktop, HP Pavilion running Windows ME, which is not able to run the itunes software. My HP laptop is where my iTouch and iTunes software is installed.
The iTouch displays my network with good signal strength, but when I try to connect I get the "unable to join the network "NETGEAR".
Going to my router, it does not recognize my iTouch as an attached device. Why is that and what am I missing?

I tried powering down the router. When it's off the iTouch does not recognize the network and then when it's powered on again, the iTouch recognizes the network. Unlike the public wi-fi spots that my iTouch responds to, where all the info like IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS etc are populated in the settings...my iTouch does not populate these fields at home even though it recognizes the network. I still get the unable to connect to network error. Could it be that my router is antiquated and can not support the iTouch? Like I said earlier, my Router does not recognize the iTouch as being attached to it.

Your password is something you created and is configured in your router. Your router may have the facility to reveal a password but you will have to find that out for your router.
Alternatively, you can reset your router back to factory default which will remove your security settings so you can reconfigure them. This is usually a small button you press on the back of the router. Maybe recessed in a small hole so you need to use a toothpick to depress it.

MacBook not connecting to public wireless network

So I have had this MacBook for 3 years now, and I have always been able to connect to my wireless network at work, which is password free.
But over the past few days, my MacBook has not been able to connect, have tried everything I know( not a computer whiz,but can survive)
I have gone on network diagnostics, and all the icons on the left panel( airport, airport settings, network settings, ISP, Internet, server) are all red instead of green.
I can still connect to my home network.
Please. Need your help.
Ps: my workplace network administrator has not made an new changes to the network.

Hi, I had the same problem : airport was not automatically connecting to the previous network.
After browsing a while on the forums I came to think that the solution was to start all over from the begining. So I deleted the information mac os has from my network (ssid + wep key). After inputing it again the issue was gone.
More precisely I gone to system prefs, then to network prefs, then to airport prefs. Then I chose "by default, connect to prefered network". Then I deleted my prefered network. After that I desactivated airport, reactivated it and inputed my settings.

WRT54G - deleting unsecured wireless network

I was able to add a Wireless Network, and thought I had it secured,however; it was only an unsecured wireless network. How can I delete if from my Wireless Network List... I have attempted to change it to a secured Network, but this did not work and I cannot figure out how to delete it. This network is not on my Home Computer. In Network Connections I only have a Local Area Connection and whenI check Network Places, I only show Internet Connections IE: My Websites on MSN & My shared Documents.
However; my laptop has a list of wireless networks to choose from.
All are secured Networks, except one --

Unexpected 2nd (unsecured) wireless network

I don't remember all the nitty gritty but I think somehow I'd unintentionally created two wireless networks with my new router (model WRT54G v8), assuming that it is possible.
I used LELA and successfully created a secured wireless network with a SSID of "zfutbol". I successfully added a couple of laptops to the network.
Everything was fine until I started playing with the wireless network security method. I inadverdently set "zfutbol" to unsecure. I tried to restore the previously established secured network using LELA and successfully changed the network back to a secured network. However all of a sudden I started 8to see an additional unsecured wireless network named "linksys" with the same strength as the secured "zfutbol" network. The unsecured "linksys" network also appears in my preferred network list. Two things suggest that I was the one who created this unsecured network: 1) I never saw "linksys" until I tried to restore "zfutbol" security, and 2) "linksys" has the same signal strength (100%) as "zfutbol".
LELA only shows that "zfutbol" is my secured network. My question is that how do I verify that "linksys" was indeed created by me? If I did create "linksys", how do I delete it permanently? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have WRTP54G (Rotuer with 2 phone ports ver : 3.1.17 ) My voip provider is viatalk and comcast is my cable internet provider who gave me a modem and everything works fine.
Now I switched my internet to "AT&T" and got wireless router with modem 2wire brand model : 2701HG-B.
I have to connect the 2wire router to get internet access and I have linksys router with phone ports, can I follow your instructions and connect the "ethernet out of 2wire router" to "internet port of linkysrouter" and disable router on my linksys and will still my voip phones work?.
Note: I have full access to my linksys router including phone configurations etc.,

If you pop open your laptop and see it has found a wireless connection and you know it isn't a public access point, is there anything wrong with using it?

My hp c4599 printer will not connect to my wireless network

My hp c4599 printer will not connect to my wireless network or show up on my computer during the installation even though it is usb connected. But it managed to create its own network where i can print wirelessly by selecting it sort of like bluetooth… I have installed different softwares from the hp website and looked at so many different forums but i cant find the answer. I have reset the printer and wireless network and god knows whatelse. I can also print fine through the usb cable, it just will not connect to my wireless network. I am going crazy P.S. once upon a time it was connected to my wireless network but i cant remember what happened.
So can someone please help and please dont be too technical

MacBook Pro cannot connect to a wireless network

I am having the following problem with my MacBook Pro trying to connect to a wireless network using a 2WIRE Gateway wireless Router from Bell that worked perfectly until last night. My network preferences pane is saying "AirPort has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.227.XX and will not be able to connect to the Internet." I'm not a techie and I've tried everything I know and cant get my MacBook to connect to the internet using the wireless network in my home. I'm using ethernet connected directly to my router for this! It's killing me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK. The wireless network was selected. In the Preferences / Network pane I removed Airport by selecting it and hitting the - button and then created a new Airport by hitting + and selecting Airport. I'm getting the same result. Full network signal once the ethernet cable is connected. Greyed out icon with ! once I remove the ethernet cable and no internet. I appreciate your help so far. Any other thoughts? We also have an iPad, iPhobe, iPod, and two iMacs on the same network. All of them are connected no problem. My Macbook also still connects to the network in my workplace no problem. This all just started happenening yesterday and I don't believe I changed or upgraded anything. I just came home and it had stopped working.

Any error messages?
Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Power off and then back on the router
- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
- iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
- Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
- iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
- Restore from backup. See:

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Since both iPhone and iPod stopped connecting I suspect a problem with your network.

Upgraded 4s to iOS8 and can't connect to certain wireless networks anymore

I have an iPhone 4s that I updated to iOS 8. Prior to update, I was using iOS 7 (whatever the latest iteration was), and was able to connect to various wireless networks. Following the update, I am no longer able to connect to the wireless network at my place of work. It tries to connect, does so briefly, and give me an authentication request (screenshot attached). Blank username/passwords don't work, neither does the network name/password combo. Choosing cancel will revert the connection back to 3G.
To try and fix the problem, I have "forgotten" the connection, re-started the phone, and neither has worked I have reset my network connections, and it worked immediately after the reset. The phone was inactive for a while, and upon unlocking, it had reverted to 3G. When I tried to re-connect, it gave the same errors already stated.
I no longer have a back-up from before the upgrade, so I can't go back to 7. My wireless connection on my home network is fine. Nothing has changed with the work wireless since it was working with my iOS 7. It uses a WPA-Personal security, and there are several repeaters for the signal throughout the building.
What is going on and how can I fix it?

Well, you could install the drivers to the wireless printer in you other computers.
