Defective SATA data cable in Macbook Pro

I have a mid-2012 Macbook Pro (13", MacBookPro9,2) in which I installed an Other World Computing (OWC) SSD early in 2014. It ran beautifully for several months and then one day it would no longer boot. After working with OWC techs for several hours over several days, including swapping in a brand new replacement SSD, the system still would not boot off an internal SSD (but would always boot just fine off the SSD when it was mounted in an external enclosure and would always boot off the original 750 Gb original HDD mounted internally). Although most the symptoms suggested that the issue was with the SSD, I eventually took the machine into an authorized Apple repair depot. After initially denying there was anything wrong with the Mac itself, they replaced the serial ATA cable that connects any internal drive to the motherboard and voila!, problem solved. The system had subsequently been running perfectly for several months until last week. Suddenly the exact same problem arose again. I spent considerably more effort with OWC this time, including yet another replacement SSD, but no luck this time either. Per OWC's tech (GREAT company and people, BTW): "It may be a internal SATA cable. As the internal SATA cable gets older it can start to degrade. It will work just fine with slower drives but when it has a fast SSD attached to it and tries to push the data at the speed of the SSD it just can not do it." It's a mystery to me how a cable can degrade, but nonetheless, I'm off to the Apple repair facility again for yet another cable.
With the above background, I'm posting this message to 1) advise others who may have encountered a similar issue and 2) to determine to what extent others may have experienced the same issue and identified the same solution. Since this is the second cable my system has needed in two years, it'll probably happen yet again in another few months, by which time my Applecare extended warranty will have expired and this problem will start costing me money to fix. I'd like to build a case that this is a design defect worthy of a more permanent fix.

This is an interesting case you hold and I would like to see how many other people have this issue.
I have run a Samsung SSD for over a year in my mac and never had an issue. The thing throwing me off is that the cable died so soon... This sounds like (I could be wrong) there is to much power running through the cable which is damaging these cables. Could be the SSD drive which is making them faulty, they might be trying to push the cables to hard, use to much power or push to much network down the cable for it to handle. I think it might be an idea to try an older HDD to see if what they say is correct and if it still works with older drives. They have been around to long to be only be able to last a year before breaking which is why it seams odd. There has to be an underlying issue with your system in my eyes.

  • What connection options do I have in transfer of data from my macbook pro 13" to my iMac

What connection options do I have in transfer of data from my MacBook Pro 13" to my iMac?

If available, use a Firewire cable and put the origin in Target Disk Mode.  That's how I rescued all my stuff, all 150GB of it, from my now dead Early '08 MBP to my current one.
With the new crop, I believe you can use the Thunderbolt ports as well.

  • Syncing iphone data into New Macbook Pro

    Hey guys,
I read a few answers on the forum but I want clear confirmation if any of you could help. I lost data on my Macbook Pro as the hard drive crashed. I bought a new Macbook Pro and I want to sync the data of the iphone into the new computer.
I need to transfer, mainly...SMSes, Contacts, Photos, and mail data (My mail is all IMAP though which is good right? perhaps transfer that information would be nice).
Applications and the data on them if possible and music would be good.
Isit safe and as easy as plug and sync? I also have a Fruux Account but the iphone data is more updated because while awaiting my new laptop, I was using my iphone as the temporary computer.
Is there anything else I should do first? Sync Fruux first or vice versa and should I do anything else?
    Thank you!

Good, glad you have a backup. So what you need to do is move those libraries from your PC to the new MBP and then import them into iTunes. Follow the instructions you will find here. I would recommend you move the files to an external HD.
Prior to doing that I would also recommend you read over Switch 101 and Mac 101. Both of these links will provide you invaluable information for someone making the switch from a PC to a Mac.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • How do I recover data from my macbook pro with a disk that can't be repaired?

I'm in need of a data recovery solution.  My Macbook pro (17") running OS X Mountain Lion won't boot and is stuck on the gray startup screen with the apple icon and spinning gear and disk utility states "Error: Utility can't repair this disk.  Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."  Unfortunately, I don't have a back up and don't know how to access or back up the data on my drive.  Mounting it to another computer as an external drive  via firewire did not work.  Does anyone know of any solutions to extract the data from my macbook pro hard drive before I reformat it?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi there
I really am sorry about your problem.  I have opened up my help centre and it too states '[...]back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall OS X, and then restore your backed-up data'.  It then says: If you continue to have problems with your disk, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced.
I just noticed it says reinstall OS X.  If it says this then this indicates a rather serious computing problem.
Help centre also states: If Disk Utility reports “overlapped extent allocation” errors, two or more files occupy the same space on your disk, and at least one of them is likely to be corrupted. [The next step is the following] Check each file in the list of affected files. [added by me]
A damage disk causes files to be corrupted.  Also you can repair a disk by deleting corrupt files (i.e. one can still use a damaged disk providing it has been repaired).  Disk Utility is able to help to repair corruption problems but not if your program files have become corrupted due to large-scale damaged disk.
I understand why you want to connect to another hard disk because you want to extract your files and I would probably do the same.  I am on a 13-inch Macbook Pro trying to solve your problem.

  • I transferred data from my Macbook Pro to my Mac mini but it forced me to make a new user for my old data.  How do I transfer my music, pics, and docs from the "old" user to the new user (so that I only have one user instead of 2?)

I transferred data from my Macbook Pro to my Mac mini but it forced me to make a new user for my old data.  How do I transfer my music, pics, and docs from the "old" user to the new user (so that I only have one user instead of 2?)

Unless you transfer the files from Setup Assistant, Migration Assistant creates a new user with the data.
To transfer the files to your first user, you have to log on this new user, and copy all your files to /Users/Shard folder. This is a folder where you can put the files you want to share between two or more users, and all users can read and write in it.
After copying the files, go to your first user, open /Users/Shared folder, and copy the files to your user folders. If you migrated applications, you must know that they are stored in a common folder (/Applications), so you don't have to transfer them. To open /Users/Shared folder, open Go menu (in the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type the folder

  • Where can I look up the production date of my MacBook Pro?

does anyone have an idea, where I can look up the production date of a MacBook Pro? I can't remember when I bought it...

Try this site as well. Paste in your Macs serial number and it will reveal all kinds of info about it including exactly where is was assembled. You can get the serial number from System Profiler. Cheers!

No, but is something goes wrong with the installation you will wish you had a backup, so make one before upgrading.

Reboot the TC.. Sometimes you need to reboot the whole network.
This is what comes of Lion and then made worse in Mountain Lion of Apple not spending enough time to fix the bugs.
    Read C12 in pondini.

C17 can be related I think.

  • HT3275 Time machine cannot backup due to "The backup disk image "/Volume/Data/Dave's Macbook Pro."sparse bundle" is already in use." Does anyone know what this means and how to fix it??

My time machine is sending me a message; "The backup disk image "/Volume/Data/Dave's Macbook Pro "sparse bundle" is already in use". As a result, the time machine cannot complete a backup. Any suggestions?

Look at the more like this column on the right.. this is the most common problem reported here.
You need to restart the TC.. that is all..
Pull out the power cord.. count to 10.. plug in power cord.
There are a few occasions where this fails.. see C12 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

  • I get a message from Time Machine ""/Volumes/Data/Don's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is aready in use.   Please tell me what this means and what I should do because of it.

I get a message in a box on my desk top saying "/Volumes'/Data/Don's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is alreadyin use.  What does this mean, and what should I do because of it if anything?

You should do a restart. That often fixes such problems.
    AND You should tell:
    System preferences > Spotlight > Privacy ...
not to index the backup drive (it does a special index already).
Does that message mean you are NOT keeping your backups on a separate drive? Backuops should be on a drive with nothing else.

My error message is: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Michael's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use.

Look on the right hand side .. more like this.. I am surprised you can have missed it.. we get about 10 requests a day now to fix it.. especially since Mountain Lion has made it 10x worse.
