Define click box failure zone

When a user clicks on a specific rectangle on the screen (click box), it goes to the next slide. This works fine.
When the user clicks OUTSIDE of that click box, they get a failure message, which is fine…however, I want them to be able to click a Table of Contents button without having any consequences, either. Right now, the click box interprets the TOC button click as a failure. How can I make the TOC button a "safe zone?"
I am using a TOC widget from here: http://www.cpguru.com/2010/10/14/free-toc-button-widget-for-adobe-captivate-4-as3-and-adob e-captivate-5/

Here is the screenshot from my project.  The clickbox is under the text box on the timeline only.
They start at the same time since I want both options available.  The idea is that the user types an "r" in the text box, then clicks the Find to simulate searching in the LOV.  If they do not enter an "r" the error displays, and the slide resets to the 1 second point on the timeline.
In case these are different issues, I started a separate conversation and posted the screenshot there too.

  • Why is the click box Failure Caption Display property disabled?

Slide is 10 sec long. Click box appears at 7 sec, display to end, pause for response and failure caption, 2 attempts allowed before continuing.
Failure caption > Properties > Display time is disabled--and set to 10 sec.
Only want 3 sec with fade in and out 0.5 sec.
This in the only one of the entire collection of failure captions doing this. While I "fixed" the slide by just deleting this one and re-doing what works, I want to know why I could not access or edit the Display time.
    Thanks.

I expected the failure caption to last 3 sec (since that was the default for all the failure captions to begin with). There are only 2 attempts allowed before proceeding  to next slide.
So, Here's what was expected. Slide opens. Text caption must be read, then an instruction given. At 7 seconds the click box becomes active. the failure caption should be 3 sec duration with fade in and out set to .5 sec each. So if the viewer clicks inaccurately, the failure caption appears for as long as 3 seconds waiting for a response. Respond incorrectly again, the failure appears again for 3 sec then the project moves on to the next slide. If the viewer doesn't click, the slide just waits without generating a failure caption.
However, I don't know how the failure caption got set to 10 sec and I usually can modify the duration. The problem is that the duration property is disabled/not available to edit/not like the rest of the captions in the entire project. How do I activate it?

  • How can I display the failure caption with click box when using function keys to navigate a sim?

I am using the keyboard function keys to navigate a simulation using Click Boxes. For instance, F7 advances the simulation to the next screen, but if the learner selects F5, a failure caption displays. I have tried deleting and re-entering the click box, placing the click box at the top of the timeline levels, starting the click box at 0 and 0.5, making the click box visible and invisible, and make the click box the entire size of the screen.

Well, I guess that's that. Thanks for replying, I do appreciate it or else I would have been trying for days, wasting all sorts of time.
    Until we meet again,

  • Several click boxes on screen but only one failure caption appearing

    Hi,
I'm using Captivate 6 and I have 3 click boxes on one slide. I have set each click box to have a Failure caption however, only the failure caption of the click box in the top position of the timeline appears in the course.
Ideally I want all 3 captions to appear at once if the user fails to click in any of the correct areas.
Do anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance.
    Liam

    Hi Liam
One way I can fathom would be to create a blank slide. Insert three text captions that present the text you wish to see and arrange them so they "work" aesthetically. Then preview the project and screen capture. Then configure the background as transparent and save the image. Use this image as the Failure caption for that top level Click Box object.

  • Suggestion: Click Box needs option to display success/failure caption until next click

As it stands right now, if I want to put several click boxes on a page and have the success captions for each appear in the same location, I can only set the success/failure caption to display for a limited amount of time. That is the only way to make the text disappear from the screen.  The problem is, I want to have several different click boxes. When the user clicks, the success caption should display. Then the user shoudl be able to click on another click box and have the success caption for that appear in the same location. The problem is the success caption from the previous click box may still be displayed (depending on how long it was set to display for).  There really needs to be an option to select that says display until next click.  It does no good to guess how long a user will want to read the success/failure text before they decide to click on another text box.
You have the same problem with audio. As it is right now, a user can click on several click boxes and have several different audio tracks playing simultaneously. There needs to be an option to disable the first audio track upon clicking the next click box.
I can't believe this problem hasn't been fixed before this. It is a very annoying problem. I never had half the problems I have with Captivate, when I used Authorware. If there is some kind of work-around I'd like to know what it is.

My suggestion would be that you think a little further outside the box to solve this 'issue'.
It appears to me that you want to display information in captions that appear and disappear based on user interaction, correct?  AND you also want audio to play at the same time, but you don't want more than one audio track to play, correct?
To achieve what you want requires at least two separate mouse events.  One event triggers the caption and audio to appear.  The other must trigger any previous captions to disappear and immediately shut off their audio.  Since you don't know which of your objects will be the first one interacted with by the user, all of them must be set up to check for any previously invoked captions and audio before turning on their own caption and audio.
Now all of this CAN be done using Captivate's variables and advanced actions.  But there IS a much simpler solution staring you in the face. Why is it essential that all of this MUST happen with mouse clicks?  Why not use mouse overs events instead?
Captivate provides rollover caption and rollover image objects for which you can attach audio to the object that appears on rollover.  These objects have two mouse events (rollover and rollout). Rollover triggers the caption to appear so that the text displays and it's audio plays, while the rollout triggers the caption to disappear and automatically shut off the audio.  This means that the user merely needs to move their mouse around the screen rolling over the hot spots to see information and hear audio. And if you just place a click box or button on the slide to pause the playhead, your user can spend as much time as they want reviewing the content before moving on.  You don't have to worry about rewinding the playhead with Advanced Actions because clicks on your content objects would resume play.
These rollover objects can be set up in seconds with audio attached.  I'm surprised more Captivate authors don't use them given how easy they are to apply in comparison to other click-driven solutions using Advanced Actions.

  • Failure attempts for click boxes

I am curious as if there is a way to create failure attempts for click boxes, the same way they are available for question slides?
    Thanks,
    Judy

Here is a possible work flow:
Created 3 click boxes, same size, same location (is only possible in CP6, forgot to ask the version you are using): CB_1, CB_2, CB_3 Only the first of them is visible, visibility checked off for CB_2 and CB_3
Click boxes have 1 attempt, the default action for Success 'Go to Next Slide' is OK; for After Last Attempt I created a standard advanced action for each click box: Fail1, Fail2, Fail3
Have an initially invisible text container Failure12 that will show up for the two first failures. I had the text 'Please again, attempt $$v_counter$$' That user variable v_counter would indicate the number of the attempt, perhaps not necessary?
For the last, third failure I created a group 'Last' of two initially invisible objects one text container with the incorrect message and a Next button (so that the incorrect caption can be read and then the user clicks on the button)
    Fail1 action, triggered by CB_1:
Expression v_counter = v_counter + 1            if you do not need the counter, skip this, it will result for Fail1 in a value 1
Show Failure12                                            the text container with the guide text
    Hide CB_1
Show CB_2                                                  so the first click box is disabled and the second will become functional
    Fail2 action, triggered by CB_2:
Expression v_counter = v_counter + 1            if you do not need the counter, skip this, it will result for Fail2 in a value 2
    Hide CB_2
Show CB_3                                                  so the second click box is disabled and the third will become functional
    Fail3 action, triggered by CB_3:
    Hide CB_3
    Hide Failure12
Show Last                                                    this is the group with the incorrect caption and the Next button
Writing out this answer took me more time than creating the actions in Captivate. Hope it makes sense?

  • Click Box does not show failure caption

In one of the slides, I have 4 pictures. I put click box over
each of the pictures, one of them I set success caption, the other
3 failure caption. When I click the success box, success caption
shows, but when i click the other box, the failure caption could
    not show.
    Can someone help me?
    Thanks

    Hi EstherH
I don't believe you can make it work that way. Here is how
Success/Failure captions work with Click Boxes. Any click on the
box itself will cause the Success Caption to dsplay (If it has been
enabled). Any click OUTSIDE the Click Box area will cause the
Failure Caption to display. (Again, if it has been enabled).
I'm thinking you can get what you want by thinking backwards
a bit. For each of the three incorrect Click Box areas, configure
    the
Success Caption to resemble what you want the Failure to
read. You may also wish to change the caption style so it's
different. If you did this, a click on the other Click Box would
trigger it's Success Caption to display, but it would effectively
present a Failure to the user.
    Make sense? Hope so... Rick

  • Single click in a double click box

    Captivate 3.
I have two click boxes; one set for a single click and the
other for a double click. Both have failure captions. When I single
click in the box set for a double click, nothing happens. It
appears to be ignored. I would like the failure caption for the
double click box to display if the user clicks only once inside the
    box. Is this possible?

Hi jimclennon and welcome to our community
I doubt you will be able to accomplish this easily. Failure
captions normally appear when you define a click box area and click
outside the area. As you are clicking
inside a click box area, but only clicking once, Captivate
probably isn't sensing a wrong action is occurring.
This is something you may wish to submit as a feature request

  • How can I get a click box to interact with a text entry box on the same page?

I'm creating a tutorial on using a specific system and trying to recreate what the end user would actual do in the system.  On one slide, the end user must enter text into a field, then press a button (click box) to advance to the next slide.  I want to be able to have the click box validate if the text entry is correct before advancing to the next slide.  Is there a way to get the click box to validate the text entry?  Not sure how to get the two objects to "talk" to each other rather than function independently.
Literally, I want the end user to enter the data in the text entry box, then click on the Get button.  I need the Get button (click box) to both validate that the data entered in the text entry box is correct and, if it is, advance to the next slide.  If the data is incorrect, I need the Get button (click box) to show the failure caption and have the end user re-enter the data correctly.
How do I get the objects to work together?

    Hi there
You need to delete the Click Box. Yes, you heard me. Delete the puppy.
I  know it sounds weird. But bear with me. After you delete it, double-click the Text Entry Box. Then click the Options tab. See that option called Show Button? Click it and click OK to dismiss the TEB properties.
Now you have the button you want. If you don't want a button, double-click it and set it as transparent. Remove the text. Position as desired where the Click Box was before.

  • Multiple text boxes with click box verification

I have seen issues similar to mine but they do not address my problem specifically.  To minimize file size I have two text entry boxes on the same slide.  The user is instructed to enter text then click the submit button.  The user is allowed 1 try.  On sucess the user goes to the next slide, on failure the slide continues until it runs into the second text entry box.
The first box works fine.  If the correct data is entered the project moves to the next slide.  If the data is in error the slide progresses to the next text entry box.  At that point I can enter data but the box over the submit button does not work.  The odd thing is that, if I move the second box to a different area on the slide, the second box works fine.  It's as though the first box, after being clicked, sheilds the second box.  I have switched the boxes in the time line and I get the same result.  After clicking the first box, I can't get to the second.  I'm fairly certain I have the boxes set up correctly, otherwise why would one work and not the other.  Any thoughts?

    Webbo,
It would be nice if the verification click boxes sort of traded positions based on which text entry box is active.  The text entry boxes work that way.  When I input the wrong data and click submit, it moves to the next text entry box and the data I just entered is cleared.  It would appear that the first text entry box either disappears or the second text entry box moves to the top because I can enter data.  However the click box remains hidden.  Placing the click boxes in two locations won't work.  I am trying to approximate the performance of the application and there is only one submit button.
I do have a work around.  Here's what I do:
I place a text entry with click box verification on slide 3.  The learner is allowed one try.  The setting for 'on success' is to jump to slide 5.  The setting for 'after last attempt' is go to next slide.
I place the second text entry with click box verification on slide 4.  Again, the learner is allowed one try.  The setting for success is go to next slide.  The setting for 'after last attempt' is continue.  I add text animation and the mouse click to slide 4 to demonstrate to the learner what should have been done.  Once that has run, the project goes to slide 5.
The are two drawbacks to the work around.
It's always best to minimize the number of slides (bandwidth/Captivate performance)
I have found the jump function sometimes gets out of whack.
The advantage is that it works.

  • Can a click box be used if multiple options to a questions?

I was trying to have the student need to click on multiple options for a question.
The situation called for the student to have to click on four different items that were correct out of a group of six items.  I put success captions on the four correct and failure messages on the 2 that were incorrect.
Following are my settings for each of the click boxes:
Action:       On success  - continue      Attempts:    infinite
    Options:  Success or Failure
Pause for success/failure, Show hand over cursor, pause until user clicks
The screen fades out before the user can read and select all their choices  (I have the timing for the screen set at 10 sec)
I have an image button on the page labeled Continue that the user needs to click on before continuing.  It is set at:   Action: on success, continue, infinite attempts
Is this the right standard object to use for this purpose, and if it is, what settings do I need to make it work?
    Thanks for the help

You need to use Advanced Actions to achieve your desired result.
The default behaviour of Captivate interactive objects is to Continue play as soon as you click them.  But there's a trick you can use to prevent this by having the On Success or On Failure action execute an Advanced Action instead that assigns the value of the variable rdcmndGotoFrame with the value of rdInfoCurrentFrame.

  • How to avoid double-click to click-box

    Hello,
until now I did not find a solution for this problem:
I have created a training course for a specific application, and in this coure are some click boxes on which the user should click. On many click boxes should the user click only once but if he double-click the click box, in real application nothing happens. There is only one way to succes the action - one click. But in captivate when the user double-click the click box instead of one click it evaluate as success action (the click box is set only to one click, double-click checkbox is not checked).
So my question is, is there any way how to avoid double-click in cases where the user should click only once? Or in case he double-click the click box to show failure caption?
    Many thanks.
    Lukas

    Hi all
Interesting thread. Unfortunately, what would be needed here is some sort of a widget that would run some internal timer. Sure, you can try multiple Click Boxes and configure one with a Single Click and one with a Double Click. But the problem with that (as I see it) is regardless of what you might try, the Single Click will win out every time. Thus you would need a widget of some sort that would "listen" for a Double Click and respond appropriately.

  • Multiple Click Box Quiz Answers on the Same Slide

Hello. I am using Captivate 5.5
I have a quiz slide with two click boxes that are both correct answers.  When a learner clicks either of them, I want them to advance to the next slide and score as "Correct".
The problem is since they only click one of the boxes, they never receive enough points to pass the quiz (since each box has earns credit towards the final score).
Does anyone have a solution or work around for this?
    Thanks.

I have already watched the videos, but we still end up 1 answer short.  Essentially no correct scores are being reported from that slide that contains the Master Widget.
Here is the exact set up we have:
Two click boxes that are correct answers.  Neither are set to report to quiz.  If either box is clicked the slide advances (and theoretically a correct score of 1 should be added).  If they click anywhere else on the slide it should advance the slide without adding the point to the total score.
The Master Widget is set up the following way.
Slave Objects: Both of our correct click boxes are listed as slaves
Scoring: Under "Slave Scoring" we have both click boxes set to "1" on Success and "0" on Failure
Success/Failure: We have chosen "Success" and "Based on Slave Success/Failure"  - "Report Success if any 1 slaves report Success"
Evaluate: We selected "Evaluate each time a slave evaluates"
Misc: We left all of these in their default position.

  • How do I troubleshoot click boxes and their hints...?

    My project is simple.
Slide 1 jumps to 3 when the click box is correctly selected.
At slide 1 after 3 tries slide 1 jumps to 2 where I have the hint "Click here"
When I preview the project the hint on slide 2 does not appear. Properties for the click box shows that hint is selected and I have deselected the success and failure check boxes

    Hi again
So you want the user to click in a specific place, right? Surely you realize that if you size a Click Box to be the entire movie, the user will be able to click anywhere they like to operate the Click Box. I'm thinking that's surely not the behavior you are seeking.
You really didn't help much because you really didn't say what behavior you are wanting. I'm not sure if you are being intentionally evasive because of "sensitive data" issues or maybe you really just don't know the behavior you want and it's one of those "I'll know it when I see it" sort of things.
From what you wrote it seems you want a "Hint" to be visible upon entering the screen? Assuming I'm correct, why not stage a Text Caption to simply present when the user enters the screen. You can make it read whatever you like. You can also pause with a Click Box or Button to allow the user time to read and comprehend what the screen is about. They would then click to proceed.
    Cheers... Rick

  • F9 as shortcut key in click boxes

I've captured a software program with Captivate 3. Now I want
my users to simulate the Function buttons. I've assigned a short
cut key to a click box, so when a user clicks the right function
button, they go to the next screen. Everything works fine except
when I use the F9 key, when I do that, the screen opens and
immediately goes to the next screen. I've checked the option 'Pause
for success/failure' captions as I did with the other screens,
    without any succes.
    Can anybody help ?

The correct answer needs the whole text you want them to
type. So 'mo' should be the answer and 'O' is the shortcut.
