Defining existing site

New here, with a newbie question. I have a site at
donaldcherry.com. The initial page is a simple one, with two links,
one to a Moodle learning site and one to a large site I made myself
with CS2 several years ago and have on my hard drive.I have used
CS3 very little, but when I have I always connected to the remote
site directly (I have not defined a site). I thought I'd go ahead
and define a site. Since I only have the files for the large
non-Moodle site, I just went to define that. Plugged in the remote
host info and all that. But now the local view and the remote view
are different (of course). The remote view shows my entire
site--Moodle, welcome page with the two links, and all. Is that OK?
Is that normal? Should I even have bothered to define this site? Am
I the most clueless person you've ever met?

I'm guessing that the root of your site includes all of that.
If you =
want your site to just be the interior site, then define it
to that =
folder within the site with an address something like =
http://www.mysite.com/myfolder
and then in the remote, use the FTP =
address and then put /myfolder/ as the host directory. Then
the home =
page should be your interior home page of what you want.
Or at least I think that's what you're asking. :)

  • Creating a new Column for my list Versus adding it from existing site columns, when to use each approach

I have created a new issue tracking list inside SharePoint 2013 team site. And it comes with predefined columns, some of them are useful while the other are not . Can anyone help me in figuring out the following:-
The list come with a field named “Assigned To”, while in my case I want a column named “Approver”. So what is preferred , to re-name the “Assumed to ”column to “Approver”, or create new field name “Approver”.?.
If I rename an existing column, could this be overridden in any future updates for my SharePoint server?
Now we want to add a column named “Office location”.so I need to create a new field for this. But seems there are two ways to do so either to add a new Site Column at the site level and then assign it to the list as follow :-
, or to directly adding a column to the list, even if it is not available in the site columns , as follow:-
So what are the differences between the two approaches ? .if I am not wrong defining a site column will allow me to re-use it in another list , but defining the column at the list level, will allow me to add a column even if it is already defined as site
    column.
So can anyone advice on my three questions please? Thanks

    1) 'Assigned to' has a different meaning then 'Approver' , it will be better if you create a new field for 'Approver'. Assigned to is a Site Column which has managed property for search, so it will be confusing type of data it will return from search in
    future.
    2) Any rename of fields should not / and will not get modified in SharePoint updates. So, you can rename is without any issue since the internal name will remain the same. But its always better to create your own custom column for business use.
    3) Creating a site column or not depends upon your need, If you create a Site Column - in whole site collection you will be able to add this field in any list - It will be crawled, SharePoint will automatically provide managed property for site column and
you will be able to get this value via search. These things will not be present in list column, you will need to do specific settings in case its required.
If these things are needed then you can go for Site Column, usually its good to create a Site Column and use it.
For Site Columns you can check following links

thanks a lot for your reply it is really helpful. so as i understand that using site columns will be better in most cases, and there is not any specific reason for not using it? is this right ?
Second question, do u mean that if i have a list column named "Serial number", then this column will not be searched ? For example if i have serial number such as "12345" and i try searching this text "12345" i will not get
the item in my search ?
    Thanks

  • Download an existing site

All the tutorials I have found have dealt with creating new
sites and publishing them. I have a site already on the internet
that I want to work on with DW. I have been unsuccessful at
importing it using DW and it won't synchronize with the existing
site if I simply FTP my old way. Kind hearted suggestions would be
    appreciated...

    Ignore what you've been told.
    1. Define a site in DW (refer to Help (F1) to learn how to
    properly define a
    site).
    2. Connect to your (remote) site.
    3. Get (DW term) the site.
If you follow DW's instructions and define your site
    correctly this will
    work perfectly.

  • How do I manually recreate the site definition (.ste) for an existing site?

My iMac hard drive recently failed and had to be replaced.
Though I had backed up my web site files, I don't have a backup of the site's Site Management (*.ste) file.
Thus, I'm unable to manage this site in Dreamweaver (reinstalled on the new hard drive).
In some forum threads, there are references to "manually recreating the site definition." How do I do this?
    Thanks!

    paintwlight wrote the following:
Does Putting the site to the remote server constitute an Export, whereby a .ste file would have been created during the Put process and, therefore, exist on the remote server?
No. Hit F1 and search for Export.
If so, I assume that if I copy the .ste file currently on the remote server and save it locally (into Library:Application Support:Adobe:Common:9:Sites:Site Prefs), all will be well and Dreamweaver will once again be able to manage the site.
DW can manage the site after you have defined the site as mentioned
earlier. It does not need the .ste files at all. Those are created by
the user via the Export feature and are not used by DW itself.
Gosh, I wish I would have known about the .ste file before my hard drive died. This seems like way too much responsibility to put on one teeny tiny little file -- especially one that's not kept with the rest of the web site files.
The .ste file contains only the paths to your site and the login
information - if you choose to include that information. It does not
contain any of the actual files. DW does not act as a backup or archival
program. You need to keep backups of your entire site (including source
files used to create the site, such as Photoshop/Fireworks layered
images, Flash .fla files, etc...) as well as backups of the .ste files.

  • Integrating CS pages in to existing site

    Hi
I am working on an existing site, where we want to make available a couple of new pages that are been fed up from the content server. The documents in the cs are been translated correctly to html via the templates we define in Site Builder. However, the existing site has its on navigation, look and feel etc. I know site builder allows you to embed html round the translated page but i think this is to messsy particulartly because the nav and existing look and feel is complex.
As the cs returns the pages as a "distinct" web pages, i.e. they have their own <html> , <head>, <title> tags etc. First of all, is their any way of configuring the content server such that it does not return the translated document as a "distinct" page. Secondly, if the translated doc can only be returned as a "distinct" page, is their any best practise in terms of how to integrate the cs generated page with an existing site. We are not using frames, but I was thinking of using iframes.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
It's been a some time since I played with content publisher, but I believe you can remove all that stuff by editing the layout template for the project.

  • Connecting PHP to an existing site in DW

How do I connect PHP to a existing site. I've been using MS Expressions for my PHP? I would like to use Dreamweaver CS5 to write PHP to an existing site. Dreamweaver had a message saying it could find the correct server.

Did you define your local testing server in DW?
Site > Manage Sites > Edit...
Screenshots below are for WAMP server on C drive:
    Under Advanced tab:
    Hit Save.
Final screen should look like this:
Finally, make sure your testing server is Online.

  • Defining A Site

How do I define a site in Dreamweaver CS4 using the folders and files of a site that already exist on my local drive and was created using other applications?

David has a good tutorial here:
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/first_website_pt1.html
If the site already exists just make sure you point to that folder on your hard drive when working through the site setup steps.

  • Can I load an existing site in iWeb?

I have a website that I put together with an old program I can't use in OS Leopard (wouldn't want to anyway). I want to start using iWeb to work on my web pages. Can I load the pages of my site into the iWeb program to edit? How do I do that? Thanks.

No, iWeb can't open, edit, or import an existing site.

  • How to change an existing site to a new local location

    Hi!
Can somebody advise me ... I currently have ONE page defined with 2 spry JS functions ... I want to change wherever those files are currently being saved (since I am not sure where they are) - including the JS files) to a new local location on a drive. THEN - once I have redefined that new site - I then want to upload everything to my server.
My problem basically - the current page I have - I don't know where the files are going when they re-saved - especially the spry associated files ... so when I MANUALLY have uploaded everything - the spry widgets do not work.
Is there someway I can just redefine the current location(s) - then - everything will go to that new location???
Really appreciate anyone's advise! ~ Rick

Well ... maybe I can ask this differently. Assume I have a web page defined ... and I want to duplicate IT - to another newly defined local and remote directory.
In other words - I want to copy the entire site and it's associated files (images, Spry etc) to a newly defined folder .... if I have that site or page open - where do I go to have everything go into a new directory?
Sorry  if this is a stupid questions - but I know I screwed up when I first defined the site / web page -and now - I can't get the page uploaded in it's entirety to my server. The site works great - when I view it in a browser ...
Thanks again for your quick answer and of course - PATIENCE!

  • Can not open existing sites in iWeb 09

I can't open sites that I built in iWeb 09 after my hard drive has been reformatted, I can only open new.

if you were using time machine or any other backup system you should be able to recover a copy of the domain file.
All your iweb work is in the domain file, if that isn't frequently backed up, you lose your edited work. Your published site should still be fine but if you republish iWeb now it will overwrite your published site and it will be gone as well.
By default, the "domain" file is in your user/library/application support/iWeb folder.
You will have to start over if you want to make changes to your published site. If you have to redevelop your site, publish to a local folder until you get it the way you want it, because when you publish to your server it will overwrite your existing site. in the future keep your domain file frequently backed up and keep copies somewhere other than your hard drive.
Hopefully you were using time machine, if not I feel your pain.
    Sincerely, David

  • Update content type template for existing sites in sharepoint 2010 ?

    Hi,
I created one custom document library (list definition) and associated 3 content types which has docment template path (\_layouts.template1.docx). I rollout nearly 200 sites with this definition. now i want to update my document template and also i want
to change template docx to dotx.
what is the best approach to apply these changes for existing sites ?
    Thanks,
    Surya.
    suryakumarp

    Hi suryakumar,
As I understand, you want to update the template
    for existed content type.
It can be achieved by programming. There is a
SPContentType.DocumentTemplateUrl Property, which can be used to update content type.
    Here is a demo:

  • How to apply CSS to Existing Site

Help! I am a Macromedia Dreamweaver user. I manage a few simple sites on a volunteer basis. I was recently forced by a new computer purchase to upgrade to CS4 for Vista compatibility.
I have never used Style Sheets. I've spent several hours this afternoon combing the web for instructions and found that most of the information assumes way more knowledge than I have, and the more basic articles seem to provide nice overviews of what CSS is and why one might want to use it, or possibly how to build a new site using CSS, but they have not answered my "how to" questions about my existing sites.
My two most pressing unanswered question are these:
    1)  I seem to have successfully created a new CSS rule by selecting a section of text in the document, setting the Property Inspector to CSS and then naming the rule and choosing a font style and size (although the new rule dialog box never appeared - I did it all in the Property Inspector). Do I have to go through the whole site and apply this rule individually to each section of body text? The existing document has all the text set by its specific features (e.g. Arial Bold 10), not using "heading 1" "heading 2" etc.
    2) I do not use Dreamweaver to upload my finished documents. I use a site-managemet ftp page on my host server. Once I've created these CSS style rules, is there anyting that I need to upload besides my edited pages?
Thank you in advance for help.

If you are using the same font family, font size, colour, etc... you can use a separate style sheet and just use
    body {font-size:14px; font-family:arial, helvetica, sans-serif}
this will make all your site the same body style.
Do I have the book for you:  CSS in easy steps by Mike McGrath  isbn#1-84078-301-x
It's a really good beginner's book to CSS.  And really easy to read!  Was a huge help to me in my beginnings of CSS.
Also, www.lynda.com is a great resource.
    Hope this helps!
You'll need to upload that extra css page with the rest of your site!

  • FTP publishing on iWeb to replace existing site - files not appearing.

On iWeb, I used FTP publishing to replace my existing site files, then deleted the original files but not only has the new site files not appeared in my public html folder but I get the message:The requested URL /www.geofflevitus.com was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Founderror was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

but I get the message:The requested URL /www.geofflevitus.com was not found on this server.
That's an indication that the index.html file that is created alongside the site folder by iWeb is missing.
Try publishing your site to a folder on your hard driive and use a 3rd part ftp client like the free  Cyberduck to upload the site folder and the index.html file.
Cyberduck or Transmit will let you view your server folder in a Finder like window where you can see which files are missing.

  • Issues editing HTML on an existing site.

I am attempting to replace the existing content in a site's left panel with custom HTML.
I refined the HTML working with a new blank subsite and was able to use the "Edit HTML" option directly in the Left Panel without adding a Content Editor Web Part.
When I go to the existing site I am unable to get the "Edit HTML" option within the panel itself and when I add a Content Editor Web Part it completely breaks my formatting.
Is there any way to apply HTML directly to an existing site panel without using a web part?

    Hi  ,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to customize the quick launch of your SharePoint 2010 site.
For your issue, you can use the SharePoint web interface or SharePoint Designer 2010. You can have a look at the blog:

  • I need to know how you would publish a new site into an existing site

Okay I have a new Dreamweaver website that I just created for my brother in-laws law firm and want to publish in onto an ftp server but the sever already has the existing site published onto it and before I have it pulled down I would like to publish this new site on there to see if everything is going to work okay and if everything is displayed correctly.  Does anyone know if there is a way I can do this and how to do it?  Please help!!!
    Thanks

I typically create a TEST folder on the remote site.  Upload new pages and dependant files there for debugging and testing purposes.  Then using a 3rd party ftp ware (filezilla, cute ftp or Ws_ftp pro), I move the new site files & folders over to the root directory.  If you have used the same filenames as were on the old site, new pages will overwrite the old ones.  If you used a different naming convention, you will need to delete old files from server.
