Defining Search Engine Default on Stratosphere
My new Samsung Stratosphere came with Google Search as the default when the Search Icon on the phone was touched. Today I added Bing as an available application. Touching the Search Icon now unexpectedly starts Bing instead of Google. I was shocked that the Bing install caused this to happen and have not been able to locate where I can re-define Google as my Default Browser (touching the Browser Icon on the Home page still brings up Google).
Does anyone know where the Default Browser is defined and how to change it back to Google?
OldJim wrote:
Thank you for the responses but no success with any attempts to re-set the defaults.
Bing, Google Search, and Search Applications Provider all indicate that there are no defaults set when I go to Manage Applications.
I have not tried the idea of removing Bing yet. I was hoping to learn where this default setting could be accessed.
I consider this item still open at this time and would appreciate hearing from someone that knows how this function works.
Hello OldJim!
I would like to offer some assistance.
I tested, and this is what I found: I had to remove the Bing application (uninstall updates) in the Settings/Manage applications menu, under "All" category. I then opened the "browser", pressed the "Menu" key, selected "More/Settings", then under "Advanced settings" touched "Select search engine" and changed to "Google". Now when I use the "Search" icon/key it automatically takes me to a Google search page.
I hope I have answered your questions, and have addressed your concerns. Please let me know how this works out for you.

My MacBook automatically started searching with the Yahoo! search engine. I have reset safari and changed my default search. The search bar says google search and the drop down options before I hit enter also says google searches, but still it searches Yahoo! after I hit enter. Any ideas of how to fix?
Check Safari > Preferences > General
If you already have Google selected from the drop down menu in the General pane for default web browser try troubleshooting Safari preferrences (plist)
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy/paste: ~/Library/Preferences
Click Go then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Quit and relaunch Safari. Try selecting Google in the General pane.
If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferrences folder.
If that didn't help, check Safari > Preferences > Extensions. Might be one resetting default to Yahoo. -

How do I stop other search engines from continually hijacking the firefox browser?
I'm fed up with this happening and not being able to get back to firefox without significant drama. Is there some way I can set up a permanent barrier, and it it malware that's causing the problem?
Permanently? Hardly. However, you could store some settings (like search engine, default start page) in user.js file (in your Firefox data folder).
Sadly, some malwares use the same trick to hijack search engines as well.
If you think the hijack is due to malware, run Spybot and adwcleaner. -
I'd like Firefox to use Google as the default search engine for the URL search field, instead of Yahoo as I currently have. I've tried to find a place to reset this in Preferences but can't find a solution. Would be very grateful for any advice. Imagine it's simple.
NB: I'm talking of the left search field, not the right search engine one where it's easy enough to define. You can reset the prefs general.useragent.override and keyword.URL on the about:config page.<br />

How can I make google my real default search engine?
Yes, I have set Google as my preferred search engine in Safari Preferences.
But when I try to do things such as define a word, it uses Bing.
Frankly, I do not care for Bing.
How can I make google always be my search engine?
ThanksHere you go Andy.
I did learn some things while looking at it.

I am asking this question again, because upon checking the forum for a solution I was shocked and appalled by the severe lack of grammar, punctuation and spelling I encountered while reading answers to this question. Obviously several people where to busy to actually read the question being asked and simply answered with instructions on how to change the default search engine for the search bar. SO, here I am asking the same question, why? because it still has not been answered and I myself still CANNOT find this setting anywhere. I use multiple browsers for different tasks, Chrome is KICKING the .... out of you guys Mozilla, why did you ever let your self get taken in by Micro-crack (Microsoft), if I recall correctly the inception of this program was partly motivated by the need for an alternative to the idiosyncrasies and vulnerability of Microsoft Internet Explore. This really feels like a HUGE step backwards, I would love to see a return to the days when Mozilla Firefox was and inspiration to developers and techs everywhere. And please will someone just answer the right question this time. Trust me when I say it will be obvious who does and does not read this in it's entirety.
''Edited by a moderator due to language. See the [http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Forum+and+chat+rules+and+guidelines Rules & Guidelines] .''HAHA! I have solved it! Ok here is the URL for Google, as mentioned above by bram:

Double click the Value entry field, and change it to the search engine you prefer"

dear, there.
how to change the default search engine? I accidentaly change it from google to yahoo, and I can't get it back. I changed my homepage to google too, but it isn't solved. ThanksClarification:
I believe now you potentially lose all extensions, plug-ins when you use the new reset function, but you will let me know.
If that is the case, your find corrupt file method maybe better. However, I reviewed the two help articles and there appear to be more files than just the delete search.json file and a possible search.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder. I am confused. Then I have to find the folders. I think help articles mentioned how to find the profile containing the files, but not sure. -
Firefox was working fine until I did a system restore to get rid of a DLL initialization failed error; it went back 20 days; an older version of firefox was there and it wouldn't update, then I noticed all my major search engines and defaults were gone, including google, yahoo, bing, etc. Some of the minor search engines were there. I couldn't even add them manually.
I tried using system restore again, going back like yesterday; it doesn't work. The files or something is wrong. How can I fix this to get my major search engines back, or being able to add them. In manage search engines there is a restore default box exists but it doesn't work.
I have windows xp professional. Please help, this is driving me crazy. I also tried typing a command in the run in the start menue to go into a safe mode and click on restore defaults. It also didn't work, no safe mode.Clarification:

For the past few days, each time I open Firefox on my home computer, a popup message is briefly displayed: "Your browser's default search engine is not set to Yahoo! Search. Would you like to set it now? (Yes/No)". After perhaps 15 seconds at most, the popup disappears and my home page appears as normal. I have the Yahoo! Toolbar installed, and Yahoo! Search is the search engine there; however, the search box on the address bar (which allows me to select from several search engines) is normally set to Google. The search engine in the address bar hasn't actually been changed to Yahoo! Search without my consent yet -- I'm just annoyed at getting nagged to change search engines every time I open Firefox. How do I get the "nag" messages to shut up & leave me alone?
I would also note that this is only happening on my home computer (which runs Windows 7), not on my work computer (which runs Windows XP, and which I also normally use Firefox as my browser on, with the same Yahoo! Toolbar + Google search in the address bar setup).
I have run Threat Scans with Malwarebytes (paid version) and a Quick Scan with Avast! (free version), and neither has eliminated this "nag" message from Yahoo! Search. You can check for recently installed suspicious or unknown extensions.

I'm referring, of course, to the search bar located next to the URL window; prior to upgrading to the newest FF, I had the capability of choosing from several standard engines and never experienced any problems but following the upgrade, there are no engines available to choose from and I have only been able to find versions of Google search other than the standard one in the available Add-ons I am shown when I go to 'add new search engine' (as there are no engines displayed) via the 'manage search engines' drop down option.
Furthermore, I have downloaded a search engine Add-on numerous times (most often, if not always, Informative Google Search) and it functions just fine, but upon FF restart, its back to having no default engines to choose from.
I have searched Google forever looking for an answer to why this is happening and had no luck with my specific problem, so I've come to where I figured the most savvy FF users dwell - hope you guys got some insight cause it's really pissing me off at this point, hahahaha.See:

I use Safari in my imac with Google as my search engine. Recently, Bing took over. Extensions still shows Google as default search engine. Search starts as Google but switches to Bing. How do I get rid of Bing, go back to Google?
Hey ravenbird1,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to use a specific search engine.
Safari 7 (Mavericks): Search the web
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH17150
To set the default search engine, choose Safari > Preferences, then click General.
If you are having problems with extensions you can uninstall and reinstall the extension.
Safari 7 (Mavericks): Install and update Safari extensions

I keep changing my default search engine to Bing but it keeps changing back to Yahoo. HOW CAN I STOP THIS?!?!
Bookmark and use this;
Download the '''[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchreset/ Mozilla Search Reset]''' {web link}
This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up
and then resets your search preferences and home page
to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This
affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.
