Definition of "hot swap"

I am looking at a SATA enclosure with Hot Swap bays. I believe that means I can pull out a drive without powering down the whole enclosure, but do I still have to unmount the drive from my desktop?

I read (at the Wiebetech site) that it still may be good practice to power off a hot-swap device beforehand when it's practicable to do so, to preclude the possiblility of arcing across the wrong pins at the connection point, which is suspected to be one of the many causes of FireWire port failure, for example, even though FireWire devices are indeed hot-swapable. It might not be essential, but instead, perhaps, it's just prudent.

I have a T60 with Windows XP 2002 SP2 as Operating System.
My question is about hot swapping a certain device; i.e. connecting it to running machine.
- When I hot swap an optical drive (DVD Multi by Lenovo (Hitachi)) into the Ultrabay slot, it is immediately recognized by the OS. It appears in the Windows Drive Management as well as in the Explorer.
- In contrast, when I hot swap a 500GB SATA HDD in a 'Leicke' adapter into the Ultrabay slot, the HDD is not recognized by the OS. The HDD does not appear in the Drive Management as a data carrier and the (four) logical drives on the HDD are not shown in the explorer.
(Electrically, the adapter seems to be properly connected: the HDD's and the T60's control LEDs are on.)
However, AFTER REBOOTING the T60 with the Ultrabay HDD ALREADY INSERTED, the Drive Management recognizes the HDD as data carrier as well as the logical drives on it without any problem. Even the correct drive letters appear automatically.

I now borrowed a colleague's 320GB HDD (Samsung HM320JI) and used it with the same Ultrabay adapter in my T60 - and the hot-swapping works perfectly... :-)
So, obviously my 500GB HDD (Seagate Momentus 5400.6) is the actual trouble maker. :-(

Hi,
after succeslessly searching several www places and the ThinkVantage help function for a precise and comprehensible answer, I hope to find it here.
I have a 500GB SATA HDD in an ultrabay adapter. I want to be able to (re-)connect it with the running t60 because I neither want it to be plugged in all the time, nor do I want to reboot the t60 for accessing the HDD's data.
(post-edit: I want the Ultrabay device to be handled like an USB device; i.e. I want it to be recognized by Windows XP also when it is inserted AFTER booting)
- Is 'hotSwapping' the proper word for what I want to do?
- If so, how can I find out if my t60 is capable of hotswapping?
- If it is, how do I switch on the function?

pommesmann, welcome to the forum,
yes hot swapping is the correct term, you must however ensure you use the "safely remove hardware" - "Hardware sicher entfernen" function of the OS you are using. There is an icon in the task bar; in XP it looks like a pc card with agreen arrow above it, in W7 an usb stick with a white tick in a green circle.
to be absolutely correct, it's not 100% the hardware that is hot swapping capable; the OS needs to support it. Windows OSes since W2K have supported it. Therefore if you have W2K, XP, Vista or W7 your T60 is capable of hot swapping.
you don't need to turn it on, it's there by default with the above mentioned OSes.
Caution. Do not create shortcuts from files / folders on the bay hard drive to your desktop; when trying to "stop" it using the remove hardware function you will get a message that you can't because it's being accessed. Another example is music files on the drive which are linked to albums in media player, this can also cause problems. One that really got me wondering one day turned out to be a file that I had sent as an attachment in an e-mail; as I hadn't closed Outlook Windows thought the drive was still being accessed.

Best Portable USM HDD for K450 hot-swap bay

I have read suggestions for the best portable USM HDD for K430 hot-swap bay, but I'm not sure if the K450 has the exact same hot-swap bay as the K430. Are the drives suggested for the K430 the same ones that would be best for the K450? I haven't even received my Lenovo K450 yet. I ordered it on Thursday and it will arrive on Monday Oct. 14, 2013. I just want to understand the hot-swap bay because I thought there was a way I could use a hard drive out of my old computer and put it in an external drive case and plug it right in. After reading the literature here in the community posts, that doesn't appear to be the purpose of the bay. I wish it would work that way because I wanted to easily offload some documents that are saved on my 500 GB Western Digital 3.5" hard drive that I would have liked to move to my new computer easily. My old computer is not working at all anymore, so I can't just drag and drop them from my extra 500 GB drive from that computer onto the new one.

I purchased this same drive and it works great!! It is too bad that Lenovo didn't tell me this when I contacted their support team. It would have saved me a lot of time!!

Hot swap and JSP debugging for Weblogic in exploded format?

I'm trying to use JDeveloper for JSF development to be deployed to a weblogic server.
I must say JDeveloper is a great tool for JSF development as none of the free IDE in the market can do what JDeveloper does.
However, I have a question on hot swap and JSP debugging.
I have managed to setup JDeveloper to debug my JSF application deploy to my Weblogic server's applications folder in exploded format.
I can step through the java code.
However, I didn't manage to do a hot swap and the break point set in the JSF-JSP does not seems to take effect.
I would appreciate any advice on the problem.

How do I enable the hot swap function on motherboard MS-7758?

I just installed a hot swap rack in my computer that runs windows 8.1. It shows up in device manager under Other devices->unknowns device, but the rack will not read a hard drive when i put one in it. I contacted the manufacturer of the hot swap bay, and they told me that i should make sure that the hot swap function is turned on and I do not know how to do that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

ExpressCard (PCIe devices) with hot-swapping issue only happened in MacBook Pro 6.1. But there is no this issue at all in MacBook Pro 3.1 and MacBook Pro 5.2.

After years of digital audio I still run into terms that don't really mean anything specific to me.
Could someone shed some light on what these two things refer to?

"Sampling" refers to those extravagant food fairs where you can stroll about and sample cuisine from different countries.
And Hot Swapping... that's for swingers only!
Very loose explanations follow.
Sampling.... the act of digitally recording a sound source or part of a sound source for use as either an instrument or effect. Drum libraries like Addictive Drums or some of the kits/instruments included with Logic are "sampled".
Recording each part of a real drum set (or -any- instrument) and then building an instrument out of it is sampling. You can even sample samples..
Hot Swapping has to do with plugging/unplugging USB or Firewire devices while the computer/device is still on. Hot swappable devices are supposed to be recognized by the host machine when plugged in.

Ts440 70AQ000BUK info on Hot Swap drives

I have just purchased a TS440 70AQ000BUK online and am wondering about the Hot Swap drive bay. Does this machine come with caddy's i can install my own drives in or do i need to procure caddys. if i need to procure caddys can someone advise the Lenovo part number and or provide a link to where i can procure them from. Lastly this machine permits 4 hot swap drives, is it possible to connect 1 or 2 drives directly to the mother board too? can i replace the Optical drive with disk?
This is a UK spec machine and i am in the UK. the manuals i have seen so far are very vague on the detail i have requested above.

Am going to purchase 'HP ProLiant ML110 G7 Intel Xeon E3-1220' server partnumber '470065-591'. I want to know little more about its RAID controller. The above mensioned server having only two 500GB HDD. I want to configure RAID 1 on it and i want to add one more HDD 'HP 500GB 3G SATA 7.2K 3.5in MDL HDD' as hot swap for the RAID 1. here are my questions
1) it support RAID 1
i checked on few blogs. then i confirm I can configure RAID 10 with two HDD. so it will work same as RAID 1.
2) it will suport hot swap
actually first time am going to install RAID. Thats why am asking these questions.

Try saying "hot repair" and "hot upgrade" instead. And then think about all the actions you need to perform to do what you want to do (replace a failed component vs add a new component).

Network Modules
Network modules install directly into slots in the rear of the router. The Cisco 3845 router supports online insertion and removal (OIR, or hot swap) of network modules. The Cisco 3825 router does not support OIR.
Caution The Cisco 3845 router supports OIR with similar modules only. If you remove a network module, along with any installed WAN or voice interface cards, install another module and card combination exactly like it.
Interface Cards
Cisco 3800 series routers do not support OIR (hot swap) of interface cards inserted directly into router slots. You must turn off the router before installing or removing an interface card.
The Cisco 3825 router and the Cisco 3845 router each provide four interface card slots, labeled on the rear panel by HWIC and a number. Each slot can be occupied by one single-wide WIC, VIC, VWIC, or HWIC.

Erazer X510 Hot Swap Drive?

This may seem like a dumb question...
I bought a new erazor X510 and am in the process of configuring it with Win8.1 The unit has a hot swap drive bay, which is a very cool feature. I purchased a new 1TB western digital SATA drive today and now need to install it...
is it really as simple as putting it in the drive slot and plugging it in? The machine doesnt see it. Of course, I dont know if I have to format it, connect some cables or what. The Erazer booklet only really describes how to put the HD in the hot swap chassis.
How do I get the machine to see the new HD?

I to have a question about the hotswap bays.
I purchased one and found it very useful (once I had downloaded the trial version software - Swap Manager - from the vipower website - http://www.vipower.com). Issue is that given the trial period for swap-manager is over the drive becomes useless, becuase without it every time i go to turn the power of via the switch the system locks up.
Question is whether there is a way in xp professional that allows you to swap out drives without closing down.
Or anyone know of a crack for swap-manager (as I refuse to by software when I was told that the hardware was all i needed).

VM supporting "real" hot swap through JPDA (VirtualMachine#canAddMethod)

as far as I can see the latest sun VMs (both 1.4.x and 1.5.x) do not support "real" hot swap (e.g. adding new methods to a class, implementing a new interface etc.)
it seems to me that this feature is dependant on the VM implementation.
So my question is: Is there a VM around which provides this feature ?
I am asking because I want to use the full hot swap features in the myEclipse workbench, but whenever I'm doing anything that changes the class structure (even adding private methods !!!) myEclipse will tell me that hotswap failed.

I've got the same question.
I'm using j2sdk1.4.2_04 and the canAddMethod method is returning false.
Could it be there is a difference in return value when I lauch the remote VM using the CommandLineLaunch connector instead of the AttachingConnector?

Hot swapping DLT tape drives

Is it possible to hot-swap a tape drive on an Enterprise 4000 running Solaris 5.5.1?
I have an E4000 with an array and tape drive attached. The drive seems to be kaput. I can get it to run for a little while, but my cron backups are failing. I've done all the hardware chacking I can (I'm 2500 miles away from the server) and had the on-site techs check the scsi connections, recycle the unit, clean it, et al.
I don't know where in the chain the drive is, or even if it's on the same scsi bus as the array. Is there any way I can find out which bus it's on, and which bus the array is on?
Assuming it's either the last device on the chain attached to the array or on it's own scsi bus, can I swap it with another drive set to the same scsi address?

Xserve "hot-swap" - not?

Ordered a new 80 GB drive module from Apple and installed it in an xserve G5 running OS X server 10.4.6. Tried to erase the drive ad disk utility failed and then crashed. Re-started the machine and tried to partitition the drive and Disk Utility hung. Restarted the machine and then the drive had an amber light which is not good. Returned the drive to Apple and got a replacement - now I'm afraid to hot=swap it in. Should I shut down and then install it, to be safe?
BTW, it's a Maxtor drive. My original 80 GB was a Hitachi.

Well, no one chimed in, so I shut down and installed the drive, then restarted. The new drive mounted (already formatted as "Server HD"), but couldn't be written to. Tried it in a different slot, same thing. Tried to format it and crashed the machine so bad it trashed the system (couldn't log in - no users or passwords were recognized), had to clone it back from another drive.
Then, I took the drive out of its tray and mounted it in another machine, it formatted fine and could be written to. So, what's up with my xserve? Bad SATA buss?
