Defragmentation on ssd in windows 7 yes or no

When i have installed a Samsung 850 evos ssd 500 gb, do i then have to make any changes in windows 7 home premium 64 bit, to ensure the best performance from the ssd? I have read a couple of different oppinions about the subject defragmentation, but what is your opinion about that, when using a installed ssd? Should it be on or off, and also are there any other changes that perhaps should be made?
Best regards to everyone

Defragging of an SSD should never take place. If im not mistaken samsung also delivers software suited to ensure that the SSD runs at optimal performance with user input. If defragging is schedualed on your win7 machine and the SSD is your main drive, namely where your OS resides you should turn it off. I do beleive win7 is smart enough to realise that an SSD is installed but im not sure, as for win8.1 this is done automatically.

  • Installed SSD and Windows 7, now notebook won't boot

I replaced my Windows 8.1 hard drive with a PNY 240GB SSD and Windows 7 64 bit.  Everything worked great! Installed all drivers, everything worked great!  Rebooted many times, everything worked great!  Shutdown notebook for the night, next morning I turn on notebook and get this error message:
"boot device not found, please install an operating system on your hard disk, hard disk 3F0".
I went through the various repair procedures using Windows 7 repair disk with no change.  I reinstalled Windows 7 with SSD formated as GPT drive, got the same error message:
"boot device not found, please install an operating system on your hard disk, hard disk 3F0".
I reinstalled Windows 7 withs SSD formated as MBR drive, got the same error message:
"boot device not found, please install an operating system on your hard disk, hard disk 3F0".
I removed the SSD from the notebook and placed it in a desktop pc, pc works great, no problems with SSD.  Placed SSD back in notebook, got the same error message:   "boot device not found, please install an operating system on your hard disk, hard disk 3F0".   I don't know where to go from here.
    Help please.....

How did you set secure boot and legacy boot in the BIOS? I actually have a very closely related (17t-j029nr) model laptop HP loaned me for my work here and ran a PNY 240 gig SSD in it for a while so it is not a matter of compatibility. Does your laptop have the 32 gig acceleration cache drive in it? Those can be a little complex to configure with an SSD.

How to defrag & cleanup Satellite C650 with Windows 7?

    Hello,
Moreover I can suggest you to:
    1) Perform a regular disk error-checking (check this as an instruction http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Check-a-drive-for-errors)
    2) Perform a virus scanning with an antivirus e.g. Microsoft Security Essentials
    3) Check you computer for performance issues and resolve them (go to Start => type 'Performance Information and Tools' hit Enter, in a new window on the left side click 'Advanced tools' and review the performance issues enlisted (if any).
    Good Luck!

I have beaten my head against the same brick wall, a few years ago now, with a MBP 3,1.
Replaced optical superdrive drive with HDD, and used external USB optical drive. I discovered that there was no way any bootable Windows CD/DVD would boot from the external burner. Tried Microsoft install disks, Paragon and Acronis. Also tried a different burner which was firewire or usb
I ended up putting the superdrive back in the MBP and all would boot again.
I have since heard that there are exceptions and ways round this, but you may be in same situation.
Windows is fussy about booting from external optical drives.

  • Configure SSD as window boot drive

    Hello HP support Forum.
I have a Pavillion p7 - 1240 desktop. I installed 120gb SSD drive. Window 7 recogizes SSD drive as regular active drive, but not as a boot drive. I want to configure 120 GB SSD as boot drive and 1.0 terabyte HDD as storage. How do I go configure Window 7.0 Home Edition  to boot from SSD ?
    Please Help?
    thank you

Hello  Lasvegaswireman and thank you for responding and helping with installation of 120 Gb bytes SSd.
I did a clean installation of bare bone Window 7 Home edition - on SSD drive. window was able to boot up successfully without any error messages.
However, window 7 does not recongnize or detect  external  1 terabyte backup usb drive when I plugged it to USB port ; backup drive has power as indicated by LED on.  I were unable to restore backup file from external USB drive because - USB controllers, network adapter and all  crtical configurations of the orginal HP factory settings were not loaded; as the result, I were not able to use usb port restore computer setting from backup. it's a bare bone Window 7.0 Home edition 64 bit.  No internet connection detected.
I pondered the mirror image backup of my internal hard drive, but the size of mirror image is 190 gigabyte, which is  larger the capacity of the 120 gbyte SSD.
how do I work around or resolve this problem? I had not format the orginal  internal 1 terabyte hard drive yet for fear I might loose settings should I fail to restore files and data from external usb hard drive.
I used Microsoft provided backup that comes with Window 7.  How do I load and restore all drivers and settings from USB drive onto SSD  drive , and use 1 terabyte HDD as data storage.
I have not formated  internal 1terabyte hdd yet for fear of loosing all settings and configurations should I fail to restore data from external backup.
Would you show me how to resolve or work around these issue?  I want to get larger capacity SSD to accomodate  mirror image but it is costly for budget.
I thank you for your help, and I am eager to get resolution.
    Cordially Yours.

  • Linux on SSD and Windows XP on HDD

This is what I am planning to do: Install Linux on SSD and Windows XP on HDD. It is a constant problem that the SSD fills up too fast. And when downloading from the internet it is not always given as an option to install on other drives than C:, for instance Adobe. So I will install Linux on SSD and maybe use some of the 160Gb hardiskspace as a logic partition for Linux. The rest of the harddisk will be C: and have Windows XP on it. The idea is to have a quickstarting Linux-pc with Firefox for internetuse only, and a regular Windows-pc.
But before I do this, is it anyone out there who has tried this? Anyone with warnings, cautions or notes? Recommendations? Or is it just not possible?

why not install xp on the hdd and use lenovo quickstart for fast surfing using firefox? this will save effort and disk space..

  • Turn off defrag of SSD in Windows 8.1

    Greetings,
After applying my Windows 8.1 Update 1 OS image to a tablet, I noticed that it has set the defragmenter to automatically defrag my SSD. This is an appalling default and Im very surprised MS hasnt fixed it.
Does anyone know a registry hack or something that I can do in my task sequence to turn of all automatic defragmenting in Windows 8.1 permanently please?
    Thanks
    David Z

This is not something you have to worry about. The defrag task will recognize that this is an SSD and exit.

It would be nicer if it just "unchecked" the box next to the drive so that it doesnt give us a false impression.

  • Should I defrag HDD between SSD upgrading?

I am in the process of changing from a Crucial 256GB M4 SATA SSD to a Crucial 240GB M500 SSD. (I'm unable to upgrade the M4 firmware as laptop has UEFI BIOS). I have imaged the M4 to an HDD and find that the C: partition is 12% defragmented and the recovery partition Q: is 99% defragmented. I have a Lenovo T430s laptop running Windows 7 Professional.
Should I defrag both partitions before installing the new SSD, or not bother?
Also the Q partition had only 2GB free on the M4. Should I increase this when I change to the M500?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you click on Q in Windows Explorer, you should see menu pop up with two options:  burn recovery disks and reclaim space.  I can't remember exactly as it's been a while since I did it, but it's possible that the second option doesn't appear until you complete the first.
You can run the recovery during startup by interrupting the boot process by pressing F11 repeatedly.  Do so will give you a menu to restore your drive to the factory state.  It does this from the recovery image stored on Q.  You don't need to do this if you've burned the disks because, well, you have the disks that do the same thing.  So, after you burn the disks and delete Q, the F11 option won't work any more.  Just so you know.
Edit:  DVDs!!!!  Unless you like feeding dozens of CDs to the burner!
SSDs are like RAM sticks.  They don't do anything if they're not powered up.  Open Power Options in Control Panel and edit the advanced settings for power.  You'll find a setting for hard disks, for when plugged in and when on battery.  Set "turn off disks" to never for both.  You don't want an SSD powering down while you're using the PC.

Since the late 2009 iMacs came out, replacing the hard drive has caused the internal Hard Drive Fan to start running at around 6000RPM.
This is due to Apple replacing the external Hard Drive temperature sensor with a proprietary firmware and using the drives internal sensor.
Replacement drives do not contain the firmware to deliver temperature data on the temperature sensor cable.
When the iMac does not receive a good signal from the hard drive it puts the fan at full speed to protect the drive.
If you replace your drive, your iMac will initially seem fine, but soon the fan will begin to speed up to full speed. Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) will have a temporary effect, but again the fan will speed up.
Fixes people have used in the past included:
Using smcFanControl and the terminal to set a MAX speed for the fan and writing scripts to start this after every sleep/restart.
Shorting the temperature sensor cable (Not a possibility on 2011 iMacs) this tricks the iMac into thinking the drives temperature is very low, hence slow fan speed.
Both these fixes are less then perfect and leave the drive in a dangerous situation with no protection from overheating.
Another option people try is other Fan Control software. These programs will not work for this particular issue as they often only control the base speed, and if they do control the fans actual speed they rely on the temperature reported by the sensor which is now incorrect.
    HDD Fan Control
HDD Fan Control works to fix this issue by reading the drives internal temperature using the S.M.A.R.T protocol and set the fans actual speed to a value good to protect the drive.
It runs at startup and continually to always control the fan correctly, prevent the loud fan noise and protect the drive from overheating
Instead of HDDFan Control, get the free SSDFan Control

  • HP Pavilion DV6t-3100 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC - Upgrade hard drive to SSD and windows 8?

I want to upgrade my hard drive (WDC WD6400BEVT-60A0RT0) to SSD for faster performance AND upgrade to Windows 8. How should I proceed? Which should come first?
I am not very knowledgeable about these things, but I have changed hard drives before -- never an SSD though. Never had BIOS problems in these changes, so never bothered with it either. No experience about that. I am practically illiterate about that part.
What should I be careful about? Any SSD drive would work? Would BIOS (F.29) and motherboard (144A 65.38) be relevant? How should I choose my new SSD?
Do I absolutely need to clone C: drive? Could I not install windows 8 fresh/anew? What problems may I have with a new SSD?
In short -- what would be the best and least problematic way to do this?
I will back up my audio, video and office files. All copy-paste stuff. I have no problem with installing all my programs from scratch.
I couldn't find a specific thread that provides a comprehensive answer so I opened this thread.
    Thanks.

It should be pretty simple _ remove the battery and adapter _ install your SSD _ hold down the power button for 1 full minute.
Eject the DVD tray with the manual eject hole using a bent out paper clip.
Load you W8 disc _ close the tray and plug in the adapter.
Boot up, it should just boot to the W8 disc, if it doesn't there will be a quick flash on the screen when to press the esc key, after that you choose f9 (with out checking) and tell the BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD ROM.
(the W8 disc will format the drive automatically)
Get the newest SSD you can find, don't buy old junk from eBay _ always buy from a reputable dealer.
I have Samsung SSD in my dv8 and has no problems, my old dv7 has an Intel SSD and it's been good too _ no problems. Stay away from bargain deals with obscure brand names.
There are no official drivers posted for your machine for W8, so you can/will have to use the generic ones, but some times the HP OEM W7 drivers will work.
Start with you Chipset driver first _ I think it's Intel _ there are no specs listed as your's is a CTO model.
Get the Chipset driver direct from Intel _ they may have updated their auto driver finder to scan in a W8 environment.
Install the rest of the drivers in any order. You can also use Windows update to find the drivers as well, it's up to you.
Be aware that some things may not work in W8, like you finger print reader.
The SSD will behave exactly the same as a standard drive, the only difference is that it will run faster.

  • BIOS detects M500 SSD but Windows 8 Does not

Hi Crucial, I am hoping you can assist me with the situation below,
I have just placed my new Crucial M500 480 gb in my Alienware M17x R4 Laptop, The BIOS detects the newly placed SSD Crucial M500, however when I login into Windows 8, My Computer does not show the new SSD, only my old HDD. In addition I have checked the cmd window and scanned the system for disks, Could you please provide advice on how to proceed and enable windows to detect the SSD? Kind Regards, Toby Butcher

Hello, This did not work for me.  Disk management does not recognize the SSD drive so I dont get the pop-up. I have an HP Envy 1414 with a six core AMD processor.  I can see it in bios though. I have updated to the latest bios on the mother board.  I have restarted several times. I tried to switch from RAID to AHCI but the pc would not boot.  Re-scanned hardware in device manager. I am just trying to use this as a data drive and don't need to boot from it. I just bought this from Amazon and would like to keep.  My 32GB of RAM is from Crucial and that works great.

  • Migrating to a SSD x230 windows 8 pro

i just got a new ssd drive for my x230 and i need to migrate or a list factory reset windows on the new ssd
i made a recovery drive on a usb but i didnt had the option to copy the partiton as well it was greyed out
i need to be able to boot into windows 8 in the ssd and if later on i have a problem be able to factory reset it
how do i go about this any help please

    Hi, neeraj_schrody
I've never personally done this upgrade, but I think it should technically work like you think it would. If an upgrade to Windows 8 is performed, then this should be installed over the partition that Windows 7 is using, which is not the recovery partition. If you made sure that the recovery partition was not formatted during the upgrade, then I believe it would remain there and the system would be recoverable through this. However, please keep in mind that this is what should be technically possible and is my thoughts, not a fact.
As far as the activation goes, I do not think you will run into any issues. These errors in your post normally only occur when certain criteria for updating are not met. Provided you are running a legitimate copy of Windows 7, which you are, there should be no issues when upgrading.
    Hope it helps,
    Adam

  • ITunes opens in a transparent window on SSD in Windows 8.

Ever since I installed my Samsung SSD I have not been able to open iTunes correctly.  It opens as a transparent window with only the searchbox showing up in white.
I have tried reinstalling, opened as administrator, used a different download location?  Your help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Here is what it looks like

  • Problem trying to add Windows 7 Pro on a 256GB SSD with Windows 8.1 preinstalled

I shrunk the SSD down leaving about 100 GB for Win 8.1 and formatted the remaining space creating an NTFS partition for the Windows 7 (DVD) install. I disabled quick boot and changed the boot order so the optical drive is first. When I attempt to boot
from the disk, it freezes before i get to the screen to choose which partition to install to.
So i then changed the bios from UEFI to CSM, and now i make it as far as the screen to choose the partition, but it won't let me install on the newly created SSD partition, with the message: "windows cannot be installed to this
disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style", greying out the install button when trying to select this partition. However, when I select one of the 1.5 TB HD's, the install button becomes active. But I really want to install Windows
    7 on the SSD.
My machine is a Toshiba Qosmio X70 with 32GB ram, two 1.5 TB HD's and a 256 GB SSD

My suggestion:  Clear the whole thing and just install Windows 7 on it.
If you feel you really might want to get back to 8.1, do a System Image backup to an external USB drive that you can potentially restore at a later time.
Trying to dual boot two different versions of Windows is fraught with peril.  It can be managed but you really need to know what you're doing.  It's better to choose one operating system and just optimize it to do all you need to do.

  • SSD and windows 7, x200s

    hi,
I have a vanilla windows 7 installation on my x200s, where I mounted a SSD drive.
I understand that you'd need to work on some fixes to prolongue the life and performances of your SSD, so I disabled deframmentation and file indexing. I have no antivirus at the moment, so I don't expect any process reading/writing on/from disk too much once windows is completely booted.
But the light indicating disk usage (the one just under the monitor) is continuously flashing, say once every second.
I'd like to ask you if this is normal or not, and if not how I could figure out what's going on. Or if I should install some software to optimizing disk usage.
    Thanks,
    Alex
