Degraded quality of photo printing book in Aperture 3

Hi,
I've isolated an issue in the print book function of Aperture 3 that drove me crazy in the last ten days:
I've created a custom size book to deliver to a local print service via "save as pdf" function, but something gone wrong because the quality of the pdf isn't good as the original photos.
After days of trials I've found where the problem rises up, so I'll try to explain step by step below:
I've identified one critical photos that well shows the problem and I've "printed to pdf" from the normal print photo function of Aperture and the results was correct:
So I've created a book and put that photo in a page and I've "print to pdf" the book. The results was degraded like you can see below (look at the dark areas that have lost every details):
I've done the same operation in iPhoto, the "non Pro" minor App, and in a paradoxical way the iPhoto results PDF was perfect!
I've also noticed that the preview image of the print dialog box of Aperture shows the defect unlike the dialog box of iPhoto:

So finally seems that something in the print engine of books in Aperture is broken and ruins the photos "before" are printed, and apparently no setting seems to help.
I've done this tials on a MacPro Lion 10.7.5 ad Aperture 3.4.3, MacBook Pro Lion 10.7.5 ad Aperture 3.4.3 and MacPro Snow Leopard with aperture 3.1 and 3.2 always with the same results.

I've done another test:
I've created a sample image with 4 colour faded bars with values from 0 to 128 for RGB and gray then I've putted on a page in Aperture book and iPhoto book then I've printed on PDF.
Below you can see the results: iPhoto is good whereas Aperture is ruined.

I've also noticed the Aperture results is influenced by the color profile chosed on the selector in the box, but no profile at all gives a good job , every profile returns a weird custom defect, also with "no profile" choice.

Quality of photos on book-cover is poor

Hi all,
This is kind of disheartening.
I've been a big defender and promoter of Apple photo books for years, even when other people have complained about the quality. I use Aperture to create the books. I always get "large, hard-cover" books.
A month ago, I created a photo book (Let's call it Book One) and ordered it. I noticed that the Fedex delivery began in Oregon. I received it, and it's great. Beautiful.
So, then, I did what I always do. I ordered two more Book Ones (to keep to give to my kids when they grow up and move away) from the exact same Aperture book. I noticed that the FedEx delivery of these two began in New Jersey.
At the same time, I made and ordered a DIFFERENT book (Book Two). It, too, shipped from New Jersey.
I just received the three books. The photos on the inside pages are of the usual top quality. But the photos on the paper dustcover, on the cover itself, and even on the inside flaps of the cover -- are not of good quality. They're dark and muddy with an almost greenish tint. There's no doubt about the quality of the .jpg itself, because the photos on the INSIDE of the book (the same version from Aperture) are fine. And the first Book One has a great cover. The second and third Book Ones are muddy and kind of crappy. Put them side-by-side and the difference in quality is striking.
This is disheartening. Do you think I should send the books back? Do you think there is a way to request the printer in Oregon in the future?

Further to this. I just ordered and received two more photo books. They came from Oregon. The covers (and everything else) are beautiful.
I wonder how I can guarantee in the future that Apple uses a good printer? Maybe I'll send feedback via Aperture.

Quality of Photo on Book Cover Poor

I just received my book created in iPhoto '08. I am very happy with the quality of the photos in the book. Nearly what I see on the monitor. However, the quality of the cover is poor. The pictures on the front, back, and insets are dark, muddy, and off color. Has anyone else experience this? This is disappointing because the front photo is exciting, colorful, and I was hoping would make a person want to pick the book up and look at it. Has anyone had them redo the cover? Thanks for your help.

Just came home to find the identical issue with my dust cover, also created with iPhoto '08 and just ordered/received a few days ago. I completely agree that the dust cover is a critical part of the success of this photobook. My prior order was with Blurb and was superb, and THE reason I used them was because they had a dust cover at the time and Apple did not offer that. Now taht Apple offered a dust cover I tried them as I wanted to give Apple the business. The same exact photo is used IN the book and is perfect, but on the cover it is exceedingly dark and another photo on the inner back sleeve of the dust cover is literally unrecognizably dark.
I have written in to customer support at Apple this evening regarding this and have requested that the dust cover be reprinted with the correct exposure as used within the book itself. Hope to hear from them shortly.

In Australia you can only get books printed locally by using iLife 08.
If I buy Aperture 2 will I be able to use the book making option to get books printed in Australia?

Why do you think that? You can create printed Books in Aperture with similar themes as in iPhoto, and with more options to create custom themes on your own.

But if you prefer the iPhoto themes and layout, you can open your Aperture library in iPhoto, if you have both the current version of iPhoto and Aperture. Simply use the command "File > Open Library in iPhoto" and you can create your book in iPhoto.
And switch back to Aperture by using the command "File > Open Library in Aperture".

When I make a Book in Aperture and print a PDF proof version, all the modified photos (marked with Badges) are totally distorted. What is causing this? All other - non-modified photos - appear to be fine.

As if only the corrected layer would have remained on the photos.
So the geometry of the pictures is correct - they are not skewed or something? Only the colors and intensities are wrong?
. Only in printing when it is converted to PDF file some photos are unrecognizable.
Is it the printed pdf or the pdf viewed on the screen? If it is the printed copy you need to fix your print settings.
Does Aperture give a warning, that the high resolution images are not available?
We had some cases of books not being able to be printed, and that was due to a broken reference to the original files. Only the book could not access the originals, all other parts of Aperture could. To check for this, try to add one more adjustment to one of the images in question. Is it possible? Are the edits reflected correctly in the pdf of the book?
We were shooting with 3 cameras, Lumix5 shooting RAW, Cannon 100 shooting JPEG and SONY alfa850 shooting RAW.
Have you tried to reprocess the raw of the edited images? (Photos > Reprocess Raw)
Also try, to remove one of the images from the book and to add it again. That usually helps, if Aperture has lost the connection to the originals used in the book.
If you no have done so already, repair (and if necessary rebuild) the Aperture library.

All I can say is the books I've created as gifts to my children for their children were received with absolute joy and appreciation (each book chronicled in pictures the first year of each grandchild's life). Granted the sentimental factor had a lot to do with the recipient's enjoyment of the book but they were spetacular. The book with its glossy dust cover is a very impressinve way to present your photos.
As Larry has pointed out so many have posted here that they were very satisfried with their book and Apple is very good about correcting problems.
To make sure there are no errors in the book before you order preview the book as described in this Apple document: iPhoto '11: Preview a book, card, or calendar before you order or print it. If the PDF file shows no errors, either in text typos (my biggest problem) or in missing photos, etc., the printed book will be error free.

I have created complex books in Aperture. Will these convert to the new photos program so they can still be printed?

I have created a number of books using Aperture. These are not just photos, but include a lot of text. How can I ensure that I will be able to print copies in the future. Can my book files be converted to use the new photo app?

The new Photos.app will have the classic rectangular sizes as well.

It only mentions the new square format, but the classic layouts are there as well, as the picture shows.
But you may not be able to migrate the old book projects. Finish any current book project while still using iPhoto '11 and create new projects in Photos.

We ordered an iPhoto book 2 years ago and hated the quality. That was with a little point and shoot Sony 3Mp. Now with our Nikon D70 (6Mp) and RAW files plus the 300 dpi of Aperture books I can say we are thrilled with the quality in both our Apple prints and books. We cropped a picture from the D70 and ordered a 8x10 and it came out great.
Some pictures in our book were dark but that was our fault for not correcting it as it was dark in Aperture too. The one click exposure correction is not availible when using JPG's by the way.

Poor quality of photo on cover of book

Hi all,
I've posted about this before, and I'm sort of dismayed that I'm the only one experiencing this. I've made photo books in Aperture for many years now, and I just did our big year-end book for 2014. As always, I'm very impressed by the quality of the printing in the pages of the book. But the photos on the front and back covers (and on the dust-jacket as well) are very flat and muddy. The problem isn't with the digital file of the photo -- the same photos appear on the pages inside the book, and they look good there. My monitor is color-calibrated.
Here's an interesting thing. When the books are printed in New Jersey (or at least the FedEx shipment originates in New Jersey), the covers have the muddiness problem. When the shipments originate in Oregon, the covers look good. Do you think there's a way to request the Oregon printer??

I wasn't able to find any "report a problem" link. Also, in one place on the Apple website it says specifically about print products that "We want you to be satisfied with your product, so send it back if you don't love it." Then in another spot it says "Print products are not returnable." And when I go to my order information, there are no buttons or hyperlinks to click to return it.
As I've mentioned, this has happened a number of times over the years. I may take the books to a nearby Apple Store to see about a return or refund -- and with the demise of Aperture, I may take this opportunity to (reluctantly) look once again into Blurb books and others that I've used sporadically over the years . . . Sigh.
I would GREATLY appreciate hearing if others have had experiences like this or if anyone has any advice for actually contacting a human being at Apple to discuss this. Thank you.

When I duplicate a book in Aperture 3.6 since I upgraded to Yosemite, the pages duplicate but the photos do not???

I recently upgraded to Yosemite and I have Aperture 3.6. When I now try to duplicate a book, the page structure duplicates but none of the photos appear?

Hi, Thanks for the info. I can't get the First Aid window to appear. I went into the "Trash" and emptied everything in there (some duplicate versions of photos etc. and I deleted the map page and remade the map. Mow the book duplicates?
I have one other problem that happened after upgrading to Yosemite. The print quality on 4 previous books I submitted was pretty poor. I contacted the Apple Store, they said to upgrade to Yosemite as all of their printers were geared to that op system. They gave me a credit for one book, told me to upgrade, remake the book and resubmit and see what it looked like the second time around. When I clicked on "Buy Book", then "Preview" everything was good. I previewed the book to make sure that the spacings / borders etc. were all good as I have always done, and then closed the Adobe window / PDF and clicked "Continue". The next page appeared like normal with my billing info etc. and I clicked "Continue". Normally at this point a window drops down saying that the order had been received and that the data was loading. This time a window dropped down for a brief second and disappeared and then I got an error message that the "connection had been lost, try again later". I found out that the credit card billing went through to the credit card company but the book data did not. I had to go through a bunch of hoops to get the charges deleted on my credit card account and finally got that solved. I went back and tried again with the book. Same thing happened, same error, only this time I noticed a small text and a spinning wheel just above the browser at the bottom of the page saying "loading". I let it run and finally it quit, about half an hour later I got an email from the Apple store saying the book was being processed and supplying an order number. Usually, before I switched to Yosemite, I would submit, "buy book", preview and continue. A window would drop down saying the book had been submitted. Then I'd get an email with the order number saying I had up to 90 minutes to cancel the order. This time I got none of that - only the order email about 30 minutes later?? Since then, I tried a second book with the same results (but knew what to look for this time, so I let it run through the step). I got emails yesterday providing tracking info for both books so obviously they were printed and shipped okay. Any ideas?

I need advice on a quality color-laser printer to work with my Mac Book Pro and my wife's Mac Book

I have a Mac Book Pro and my wife a Mac Book, both with Intel Chips.
I'm running OS 10.7.5 while she is running 10.6.8.
Our budget is between $200 and $400,
We would like the following features:
1. Wireless printing over a linksys router home network. It would be very nice to have the printer in a central location without having to have it USB'd directly into the router. Our router has a fixed location in the house and the printer will be located elsewhere in the house.
2. Reasonably fast to fast printing (pages /minute)
3. Color and black/white printing if the cost isn't too much higher to get color printing capability.
4. AirPrint from iphone 5, if possible.
5. High quality photo printing is not a requirement......looking more for high quality document printing (Word, pdf's, etc) and printing of material from the web.

Printing Books for a Photo Class

I am a college student in a digital photography class. About 90% of the class is on a Mac and we use iPhoto & Aperture to edit photos. We want to start printing books but before we do, what recommendations do you have for the other 10% of the class? Is there a program that PC users can either purchase or download that will allow them to make books? Thanks for your time.

PC users, as well as Mac users, can make photo books on a variety of online programs. Shutterfly, SharedLink, ImageStation, PhotoWorks all will allow users to create nice bound books. Shutterfly has nice options for page layouts--even more than Apple!

Best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book

Hello,
I was wondering what would be the best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book on a Macbook Pro so to achieve the most realistic results to what's on the screen
ie. which software should I use to change photos from RGB to CMYK, photoshop or iPhoto itself. I'm guessing maybe the autofix feature in iPhoto? (I don't have Aperture)
Secondly, which monitor color setting should I set the screen at? I'm guessing it's either Apple RGB or Colour LCD, maybe even ColorMatch RGB?
Any any other tips that people can give in achieving the most realistic results to what you have on the screen when your printed iPhoto book gets sent back. I don't want the mid tones to disappear or become too bright because the gamma and color settings were different to what they use at the other end.

The situation has changed a little, our original photos are in RAW format and some of them are slightly over saturated in the higher tones.
I've read on other threads that it is a good idea to run the 'Enhance' tool on all photos before sending the iPhoto Book away.
Since iPhoto's 'Enhance' tools seems to do a lot of helpful things like sharpen, adjust the levels, etc it also seems to notch the contrast up and this would prove destructive for the lighter and darker tones not captured by the camera's dynamic range.
So as I've been advised it's best to use Apple's own tools before sending the iPhoto Book away, so I'm going to download the trial of Aperture.
Does anyone have any more recommendations on which monitor colour profile setting to use etc. I've also read that iPhoto prints best from JPEGS so the RAW will obviously need changed. Will Aperture automatically save to Profile name: Camera RGB Profile after I've done some editing there?
What would be the best way to prepare RAW images in aperture where some of them might need an Image Overlay in Photomatix then imported back to Aperture for printing an Apple/iPhoto style Book?

You will get this warning, if your book includes textboxes that still include the default text, like "Insert Title". You need to find these boxes and add your own text. Look for boxes like this:
Make a PDF-preview of your book and look, where the preview differs from what you are seeing in iPhoto.
