DEINTERLACE FILTER in FCP=====

Hi,
When I apply the deinterlace filter whether it be in FCP, Compressor, or some third-party software, do I match it with the field dominance of what my video is?
For example, most DV video is Lower (Even) so do I set the deinterlace filter to be Lower (Even) as well or does it work somehow counter effectively if I set it to Upper (Odd)??
Thanks!

However, setting Field Dominance to "None" if the source material is interlaced results in a blending of the fields - and field blending is the least attractive way to deinterlace. I suggest Compressor with Frame Controls well adjusted, or Graeme Nattress's superb plug-in.
A good starting point for Compressor is outlined here.

in M5, when you hoover over each parameter's far right, a tiny triangle appears:

apply to each parameter you need in FCPX

  • Deinterlace filter options

the deinterlace filter in fce 4.01 has 5 options
    1.  upper
    2.  lower
    3.  flicker filter (minimal)
    4.  flicker filter (medium)
    5.  flicker filter (max)
can someone tell me the difference in these options?
    Thank you in advance.

Interlaced video has 2 fields: an upper field and a lower field; from the top of the image to the bottom of the image the horizontal lines that make up these fields alternate between each other.  For practical purposes you could think of the upper field being all the odd-numbered lines and the lower field being all the even-numbered lines, each representing half of the total image.  (For example, 1080i video has 540 lines in the upper field; and another 540 lines in the lower field, one after another, for a total of 1080 lines.)  When combined you get the full, interlaced image.  This is how TV works as well as most camcorders.  Some newer camcorders support progressive video in which case there are no fields; every frame is a complete image unto itself.  (While not perfectly correct in a technical sense, this explanation is basically correct.)  There are subtle visual differences between interlaced and progressive images.
When you select upper or lower you are selecting only one of the two fields for display ... hence the name of the filter ... deinterlace.   The flicker selections slightly blur the image in the vertical dimension in order to reduce apparent flicker.  The choices are simply the degree to which you want the effect applied.

  • Using Brightness & Contrast filter in FCP (Why the lighting/color shifts??)

I'm using the standard Brightness & Contrast filter that comes with FCP but when I do so the video I apply it to has crazy shifts in color and lighting, any help with getting rid of these or at least minimizing them would be much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Kevin

The Brightness and Contrast filter in FCP is worthless, plain worthless and does more damage than good. Same with the Proc Amp filter which along with the B&C filter should be eliminated from the FCP tool kit.
As Mr. X. has rightly stated, use the 3way. Get to know it intimately as it does darn near everything you need to accomplish.

  • Deinterlacing Filter (Upper, Lower etc.)

    Hello,
recently I came across the famous deinterlacing problem, now I'm just wondering:
I got the black lines away by putting the deinterlacing filter on my slowmotion and my speeded up video clips (changing the speed occurred black stripes after rendering) .
Now which deinterlacing filter should I use, upper or lower, is this even making a difference quality wise and if I put one filter on one single clip, should I directly go and give every clip I have, even the ones that don't have black stripes after rendering, a deinterlacing filter?
After converting my clips from .mts to .mov via Popcorn 4 all the clips I edit on have this "ghost" effect (front picture http://vimeo.com/14850592), any tipps on getting away this problem?
    Thanks a lot,
    highly appreciate your efforts ,
    Philippe

You should only de-interlace clips which have a problem as rendering footage that does not need de-interlacing will take a long time.
Regarding which settings to use, simply get a short "problem" clip, no more than 10 seconds long and do a number of tests to find which works best.

  • Reinstalled PS CS4 - deinterlace filter - help, please?

Hi, I had to wipe my hard drive and reinstall Leopard (I don't want to upgrade to Snow Leopard, please - have my personal reasons) b/c my hard drive was getting too full and thus running out of virtual memory space with the result that some of my applications (i.e. comic life deluxe) wasn't behaving right. Since I wiped the hard drive, reinstalled, reinstalled/activated my Photoshop CS 4 and just updated it to v11.0.2, after adding my Extract Plus plug in back in, and in the process of doing this I noticed a "deinterlace" filter/plug-in in my PS filter/plug in's folder, and I'd like to know - how do I make this filter active/show up when I'm editing photos and I click on "filters"?
Also, how exactly do I use this filter to deinterlace photos that have interlacing in them?
    Thanks in advance.

Check Image > Mode in the Menu Bar or the Document’s header (wher something like »Untitled-1 @ 100% (RGB/8)« may be written).
Certain Filters do not work on CMYK-images or bit-depths.
Changing CMYK to RGB is best done with Edit > Convert to Profile or, if you are certain the Working Spaces and other Color Settings are appropriate in this case, Image > Mode > RGB Color.

  • Flip or Flop filter in FCP?

In motion you can add a flop filter to a clip and it flips it horizontally or vertically.
Is there such a thing in FCP?

    Yeah...it's called flop/flip. Video Filters >> Perspective
can't remember if it's a default effect but there are plugins abound online.

  • Can I fix the black level with the proc amp filter in FCP?

Again, trying to help my dad convert old vhs tapes to DVD. A proc amp is a bit outside his price range and probably a canopus box that handles setup is as well.
Can this problem be fixed after capture? I noticed that final cut has a proc amp filter built into it but the documentation on it is sparse at best.
If it can be fixed what settings do I need to use with the proc amp filter? Will using this filter be the same thing or will it just be "darn close"?
Is there any way I can verify it is indeed a black level problem by looking at the scopes in final cut?

i don't like the fcp proc amp filter but you could capture a bit and see if it's gonna work. i would capture a bit and apply the black level control on the 3 way color corrector and follow it all the way to dvd.
if these vhs tapes are precious and critical, why not rent a tbc and undergo a marathon capturing session?
OR! rent a dvd recorder and record direct from the vhs player and let the recorder handle everything for you.

  • 3 way Color Corrector Filter in FCP 5 and FCP6 the same?

I'd like to know if when I make a color correction with the 3 way corrector filter on a clip in FCP 5 if the same value apply for the same clip in FCP 6 (considering I use the same QT 7.2).
To be more clear, for exemple:
"Clip 1" color correction with the 3 way corrector in FCP 5 is: Saturaton 80 / Highlight 122 / Midtones 105 (and other values for color balance)
If I apply the same values for "clip 1" in the 3 way corrector in FCP 6, the correction will be exactly the same?

    Thanks, now more tricky:
If I make my color corrections (with the 3 way) of "clip 1" in FCP 5
Will I have the exact same results if:
I make a self-contained QT of "clip 1" without any color corrections, import it in FCP 6 and then apply the 3 way corrector with the same values I used in FCP5 ??
    Thank you.

  • Compressor / Deinterlacing

    Hello -
I have a few files to encode for the web, and I need some advice on compressor and deinterlacing.
I exported the video from FCP to Compressor to be encoded @ 640 x 480 with H.624 (2k kbps). I chose the deinterlacing filter, with the sharp algorithm, but the video - when exported - did not look good. I applied the frame controls; choosing out put fields: progressive and deinterlacing: best (motion compensated), and the Compression had 86 hours still to go after leaving the job all night (over 12 hours).
As a last ditch attempt at getting these jobs to run - with an acceptable end product and an acceptable timeline - before my deadline (Monday), I have applied the deinterlacing filter in FCP, and then submitted the job to Compressor without Compressor applying any deinterlacing.
Will this provide a deinterlaced final video...?
I am using FCP 5.1.4 and Compressor 2.3
    I am running the above on a G5 Dual 2GHz w/2 GB DDR2 SDRAM
My settings for the video in Compressor:
    Name: h26402k

    Hello All -
The first scene just finished exporting, and I checked the .mov in Quicktime and the files looks good after applying the deinterlacing in FCP, and not applying any filers or frame controls in Compressor. Thescene took a fraction of the time to export - Around 1.5 hours to export 8 mins of video, compared to 32 hours when using frame control.
Thanks to anyone who was thinking about answering my question
    Cheers.

  • Problems Encoding FCP/Motion Project to DVD, HELP..........

Hi all, i've already posted in the Motion forum and no joy so im hoping the FCP guys can help me. Heres the problem.
I have an FCP project which which is 720 x 576 48 KHZ DV PAL. I'm trying to add titles using Motion. I've tried the Embedd and non embedd methods and when i view the titles in FCP everything looks fine.
The problem occurs when i author to DVD (iDVD or DVDSP4). My settings are the same in FCP as they are in Motion. Any pieces of video with motion effects flicker really bad. I've coastered about 10 DVD's messing with the field settings and no joy. The closest i got to a result was by applying a deinterlace filter in FCP. Whilst this helped, the footage was still noticably lacking in quality compared to the rest.
I've tried exporting the footage in compressor to Mpeg2 then authoring in DVDSP4 and the outcome was exactly the same. I find it hard to believe that im the only person with this problem??? If i create a project in motion with no DV footage it plays fine so theres a problem with motion layering over DV i guess. This pretty much renders motion useless for my needs. Incidentally the DVD's play ok on a Mac/PC, the problem is on Televisions. I've tried three Tv's and they're all the same aaarrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!
    Can anyome help?

Hi Chris, thanks for the prompt reply. I've followed your advice, i had to cheat of course. I set up my camcorder as a DV out device and then sent an S-Video to the TV. Now i can see the offending footage before i author. As you predicted the FCP footage is also affected by the motion titles, so that eliminates DVD authoring as the culprit. What a waste of DVD's. So my problem now is that Motion effects are causing the FCP footage to flicker. I have both apps set to Lower field dominance and pal 720 x 576. I cant work out where im going wrong.
    Regards

  • FCP HD content

I shot/edited HD content, exported to Quicktime Movie, then burned a DVD in iDVD-the result has horizontal lines throughout the movement area-is this because it's HD? Can I fix this? (it plays back in FCP fine)

You could be seeing field reversal. This is caused by taking interlaced footage and scaling it down to a different size. I080i vertical line resolution isn't an even multiple of 480i. So scaling the 1080i down to 480i will cause the fields to be reversed for 50 or 60 pixel rows, then back to non-reversed for another 50 or 60 pixel rows and then back to reversed, etc. The result is Horizontal stripes in footage with any significant movement. This is because the areas where the fields get reversed are 1/2 frame ahead of those with normal fields. When these are displayed simultaneously, the effect is quite ugly.
I get the same phenomenon when scaling 720x486 footage down to 720x480 and it's very ugly.
This is the most important reason I hate cameras that shoot in 1080i. Interlaced footage doesn't scale well for this reason. Progressive cameras that shoot in 720P never have this problem since the fields are identical so neither field can "get ahead" of the other.
Try adding De-interlace in the Compressor preset and re-render. You can also add the Deinterlace filter in FCP and set it to blend. You will lose resolution by doing this slightly, but not enough to make any difference on a DVD.

  • Just when I thought I new how progressive and interlaced are working....

    Hey everyone.
I thought I new the difference between progressive and interlaced but I've still got a few questions. For the most part... i get it. Progressive is like 1 solid picture. Interlaced breaks up the picture into interlaced lines and 2 fields, odd and even . Great, that much I've got.
    Here's my issues.
This is actually a compressor question but it starts off with Final Cut.
I shot some footage on Mini DV NTSC 29.97 interlaced.
When I edit it in Final Cut things look pretty good. I see a little interlacing in the preview window but that's ok, it's the preview window. I know there is a filter to de-interlace my footage but what is the option in my sequence settings of Field Dominance? There is an option of field Dominance- Lower, even and None. Lower and even I assume deal with interlacing fields. I assumed none meant progressive. What's the point of needing a filter if I can change the field dominance within my sequence settings? Does it do the same thing?
If I export this footage to compressor I use the H.264 codec from inside compressor.
I noticed that I can turn the Frame Controls tab of my setting on. I then have access to the resizing controls. Resize Filter... not sure what that is. Then Output fields. I change that to progressive. Which I assume deinterlaced everything... but then there is another option right below that to Deinterlace....? Didn't I just do that by saying their are no fields? On a final note after it exports and I go to look at the .mov... the footage is still interlaced.
One last thing with compressor. The above issues are all part of my setting inside of the inspector for the actual "codec" i have attached to the project. If I mouse click on the project itself... not the settings of the codec but the project itself, the information inside my inspector window changes. Now instead of Codec Settings I have A/V Attributes... there is an option there for Native Field Dominance? Which one do I change? How many field dominances are there? I have 1 in Final Cut another 1 in my AV Attributes of my project in compressor and a 3rd on in the codec settings.
I hope these questions make sense. They are confusing issues to me so I'm not quite sure how to ask them.
    Thanks a lot.
    -Drew

It's not surprising that you're confused. It's a pretty confusing subject. Hopefully, I can help you get some sense out of it.
Most of your questions stem from not quite understanding the definitions of "deinterlacing", "progressive frame rate", and "field dominance". Let's start with the last since it pertains to your first question.
When you have interlaced footage, you have 2 fields (as you noted) per frame. One field is drawn on the Odd (or Upper) scan lines of the TV. 1,3,5,7...down to 479. The other field takes the Even (or Lower) scan lines: 2,4,6,8...480. Together they are woven into a single frame.
The field dominance in your sequence settings determines which field is drawn first. DV and NTSC in general is Lower field dominant and if your footage is DV, you should not change this. Interlaced HD is typically Upper field dominant. Again, under most circumstances, this should not be changed. What will likely occur is a "tearing" of the image in movement, particularly noticed in pans or fast action. None draws each line successively which is how progressive footage needs to be interpreted.
However, progressive does NOT mean deinterlaced. Nor does deinterlaced mean progressive. If you use the deinterlace filter in FCP on your DV footage, you merely remove one field from your footage and REPLACE it with a copy of the field you kept. In other words, if you set the deinterlace for Upper, then the clip will copy the image in the Lower field and paste it into the Upper field. The footage will still be interlaced.
In Compressor, changing the Output to Progressive in the frame controls will make your interlaced footage progressive. This should always be done when the final viewing medium is a computer. You see, computer monitors always display thing progressively; they have trouble with interlacing frames. They are not built like TVs. If going to TV, then you want to keep it interlaced (unless you're going for the progressive look), as that is how standard def TVs are designed to view video.
The deinterlace option in Compressor is the same as the filter in FCP, but as you know now, that's not the same thing as making a file progressive.
Finally, the AV settings for the clip you placed in Compressor are the same as the sequence settings in FCP. They help the program determine how the file should be displayed. If you have DV footage, and you switch the dominance in that setting or in FCP, then you risk having your footage look jittery and generally no good.
I hope this clears things up for you a bit.
    Andy

  • When delivering for professional DVDs, should files always be progressive?

Is it understood that every Quicktime file that you deliver to a professional DVD authoring house should be progressive? Or do I need to ask? Or do some DVD authoring houses make DVDs from interlaced files.
A house I delivered to didn´t bother to tell me that they waned progressive files, because they thought it was so obvious that everybody used progressive.
The program I delivered was 100 per cent made from dv footage, so therefore I would have to deinterlace my self. Is the interpolation in the deinterlace filter in FCP any good? could it be compared to the interpolation filter in Photoshop.

"Professional" is meaningless around here. Your duplication house was correct but your client wasn't. You needed to know what the delivery format was BEFORE you started the job. A progressive DVD is usually meant for display on computers only. Anything that is meant to be viewed on a television/video monitor is—usually—output to DVD interlaced, unless, of course, you're going for that film look.
Progressive and interlaced have other uses, too.
