Deinterlace for Menus (in Photoshop, Motion, and DVDSP)?

I have a slide show built as menus (people like their buttons, so i'm not using the built-in slideshow) and I'm not sure what settings to use in Photoshop for the Deinterlace filter. The options are:
Eliminate: Even or Odd Fields?
Create New Fields by: Duplication or Interpolation?
Also, is there a way to do this in DVDSP 4?
Also, for the menus I created in Motion 2.0, should I keep those progressive, and let DVDSP 4 encode them, or should I export from Motion 2.0. If so, what are the best settings for Menus?
Thanks!

A professional DVD player using component video, progressive scan, looks absolutely stunning, I couldn't believe my eyes. However, a consumer quality DVD player adds considerable jitter to the menus.
OK, this is one of two things, depending on what you're really seeing on screen.
If it really is a "jitter" kind of effect, it's probably due to fine detail in the image, or fine horizontal lines, even if the original image is not a capture of an interlaced TV image. The only way to really solve that is to blur the image slightly... even a 0.5 pixel Gaussian blur will help reduce the jitter without blurring things too much. You'll have to experiment to get the best tradeoff between image detail and lack of jitter.
However, since you're seeing a difference between the component-connected DVD player and the "consumer" DVD player, it could also be that you're seeing "chroma crawl." When a player is connected via a composite connection (the RCA-style jack, usually color-coded yellow), or via an RF connection (heaven forbid), highly-saturated colors like reds and blues will seem to have a crawling border of pixels around them. These get reduced considerably when the DVD player is connected via S-video and almost completely disappear when you use component connections. Unfortunately, most people probably still use composite or RF (jeez) connections, so unless you tone the images down by desaturating the colors, they will see chroma crawl.
If you use Final Cut Pro, you should be using its Range Checker to make sure your colors and brightness are in the safe range. Photoshop has a Broadcast Safe filter, but frankly it's not very effective.

Any opinions on which iMac is best for use with Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom. Not sure if the 2.7 i5 with 512 graphics card is Plenty of power or if upgrading to the 3.1 i5 or 3.4 i7 is a wiser choice given the price differences. Appreciate the help

So I was reading over your post, and even though this is older and has to do with CS5, I have some information for CS6 that will be relevant to your question now that it is time to upgade the software. In general Photoshop has always been more about RAM than Processing power, though that is important too. Until CS5 it could never quite take advantage of what multi-core processors really had to offer, and even the graphics card didn't really effect much of it outside of certain features and the 3D optio
Now that is no longer true and Adobe can effeciently use all aspects of the computer to give you much better performance.
So much so that I was able to buy a brand New ASUS with the following specs:
    Dual Core 2.2GHz Processors
8GB of RAM (4GB original to the machine)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit OS

This machine not only runs photoshop CS6 and Launches in less than 5 Seconds... it can run Premier and After Effects as well, and this Laptop cost me less than $400 (on sale at Best Buy 2 Weeks Ago. You don't have to buy something this cheap, but isn't it great that you can and still run Master Collection effectively?

  • Monitor and card for use with FC, AE and DVDSP

    Hi everyone
Since a couple of months I'm getting more and more assignments to create motion graphics for commercials, billboards and DVD's. So far I'll got along quite well with my usual equipment (G5 2x2ghz, dual monitors, 2,5gb RAM and a GeForce FX 5200 graphic card).
But so far I've had to check the final outcome on a friends reference monitor and nowadays I simple don't have the time (or energy) to do that.
But when I'm looking at all the possible equipment to buy I get confused. What I really need is a way to see my stuff from After Effects mainly on a monitor so I can see how it behaves on a PAL-screen.
Anybody out there that can help me?

Okay, First you've got to tell us the format you're working in. DV, Uncompressed, HD? Then we can give you some direction for the kind of interface you'll need to view your material. If you're working in DV, Aftereffects will allow you to view via firewire. Not sure how it compares to looking at it from fcp via firewire. It may just be a proxy and not give you an accurate view.

  • Ati HD 2600 XT man enough for the job? Motion and Final cut

Hi all, just got my new 2008 Mac Pro with a ATI HD 2600 XT graphics card
    I have a dell 24"monitoer running at 1920x1200 pixels
I am just about to buy the final cut studio package and I'm wondering if I need to spring for the 8800GT card?
so my question is: just how taxing on the gpu is Motion? is the Ati HD 2600 XT man enough for the job running at 1920x1200 pixels?

Rob Morgan at Barefeats.com has some benchmarks that compare the 2600 XT to the 1900 XT in a 2.8 8 core machine. In his test the 2600 XT was only a hair slower with Motion. I have not noticed any performance hit with the 2600 XT. I plan on sticking with the 2600 XT.

  • Canon 5D Mark II, Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom 2.4

    All,
I know that this has to have been answered elsewhere, but I have not found what I'm looking for.
I have purchased a new Canon 5D Mark II camera which will arrive Wednesday.  As far as software on my Mac Pro, I have Adobe Creative Suite 3 Design Premium, which includes (obviously) Photoshop CS3.  I am also running Lightroom 2.4.  I am under the understanding that in order to open RAW files from the 5D Mark II, you need to have Adobe Camera Raw 5.X, which is not supported by Photoshop CS3.  I also understand that Lightroom 2.4 CAN open the 5D Mark II RAW files.  First off, are both of my statements to this point accurate?  If so, can I use Lightroom to open the RAW files, do whatever adjusting I would like in Lightroom, then export the modified file (in TIFF, for example) to Photoshop CS3, and go on my way?  Or will this not work?
If the answer is no, what are my options for using the software that I have with my Canon 5D Mark II?  Am I REQUIRED, now, to upgrade to Photoshop CS4?  If so, can I buy the CS4 Upgrade for Design Premium, if my CS3 Design Premium is the Education version?
Thanks for any help on this...I'm hoping to avoid spending any more money than I need to in software just to be able to process images from my new camera.  I'm sure I could always use the Canon supplied software to open the RAW files, but I'd prefer to do so in the Adobe family of programs.

    cabasner,
I upgraded to CS4 when I got my 5D2, and I can't stress enough how much better CS4 is. It's worth the upgrade even if you didn't get the 5D2. It's more stable that CS3, and ACR is insanely better (as is the Bridge... that's actually usable now!). ACR in CS4 has Adjustment brushes for Exposure... that's right, touch-up areas in ACR and it's totally non-destructive. Vibrance has been added also. In PS, your Dodge & Burn tools have a totally new algorithm which works so much better it's nuts. You even have a Legacy checkbox to see the difference. With the insane amount of image data in the 5D2, those tools work very well. You also have OpenGL support in CS4 now, which means you can view the image at any percentage and it looks like 25/50/75/100. And since your graphics card is now used, Photoshop CS4 is FASTER. And with the Clone Tool you can see what will be put down on the image inside the tool's circle, BEFORE you press the mouse. Talk about an easy way to line up the edit! Oh, then there's all the Adjustment layers... man, talk about a non-destructive time-saving edit! And the panels now stay off to the side, not covering up the image anymore. There's more, I'm, not even remembering everything. Adobe got PS right with this version. I would spring for CS4 in a New York minute, it's the perfect partner for our 5D2s.

  • New Photoshop CC and lightroom deal

I have photoshop CS5 now. I got a new camera, canon D60. The CS5 won't do raw files from the new camera. If I do the trial for the new Photoshop CC and lightroom package for $9.99 a month do I have to uninstall the old CS5? Can I use the new photoshop anywhere like the old program I have now?

No, you don't have to uninstall CS5.  But yes, you can use CC anywhere.  It still loads on your hard drive like any program, you just have to log on to the internet every so often (I think it's every couple of months?) to confirm that you're still paying your subscription fee.
Edit: before you go spending money on something you might not need... CS5 should be able to read 60D raw files.  Try updating your ACR.
Adobe - Photoshop : For Windows : Camera Raw 6.4.1 update
Also, you could use Lightroom (which is looks like you're considering as well), but buy the standalone version of LR 5.  And Lightroom can import to Photoshop CS5 when you need to do edits.   The $9.99 is a great deal for anyone that uses both programs regularly and, more importantly, upgrades with every new release or so.  But not everyone does that, and not everyone feels the need to have the latest versions.  Me personally, I'm also hesitant to use a photo organization system like Lightroom and only lease it from Adobe.  These topics have all been beaten to death in here, so no need to rehash, just wanted to give you some options.

How do I change the size of the tools and the text for the menus in Photoshop?  I need a magnifying glass in order to make out what they are.

Okay, I've figured it out, so I'm going to answer my own question in hopes that it may help anyone else that would like to actually be able to see what they're doing when using Photoshop CC 2014 on a high resolution screen.
    1.  Open Photoshop.
    2.  Select Preferences from the Edit Menu, then select General.
    3.  Change the HUD Color Picker to Hue Strip (Medium).
    4.  Select Interface from the Preferences menu on the left side of the dialog box.
    5.  Change the UI Font Size to Large in the Text area of the Preferences dialog box.
    6.  Select Experimental Features from the Preferences menu on the left side of the dialog box.
    7.  Select Scale UI 200% for high-density displays (Windows only).
    8.  Click on OK, then Exit/Quit Photoshop.
    9.  Open Photoshop and everything should be readable.

There is no application called "Adobe" - you are either working with Adobe Acrobat or the free Adobe Reader. Open up the preferences for the application (Edit>Preferences), then go to the "General" category and modify the settings for "Scale for screen resolution". You will have to restart the application after you do that. Does that fix your problems?

Pagemaker is ancient, obsolete and unsupported. It was discontinued over 10 years ago. (Though why it is still sold is a mystery.)
If you want to run PageMaker, your best bet is to use a Win2K or WinXP PC.
Otherwise move to Indesign or look at Serif's PagePlus or Scribus.
