Deinterlace to ProRes on log and transfer

I've just got a Panasonic TM10 1080i 25 camera for sports training. My plan is to slow down footage using FCP.
Quality doesn't have to be broadcast (ProRes proxy or AIC) but I do want to deinterlace the material and I don't see any option for this in the Log and Transfer window. Just basic options under 'preferences' to pick the codec.
I know I can use Toast 10 to deinterlace and transcode at the same time but surely it must be possible to stay within FCP Log and Transfer and achieve deinterlaced ProRes proxy files to edit.
Any advice would be great.

You don't need to deinterlace everything if you only want the ability to freeze on a single frame. Just make a still of that frame, and then deinterlace THAT in the timeline. It would save you a lot of time, and would preserve the original footage. You will lose detail and clarity when you deinterlace.
If you're not scaling your footage down (like HD-SD) then deinterlacing will not make your footage look better and, in most cases, will make it look worse.

  • FCE log and transfer goes from avchd to prores which then requires rendering down to AIC -- what's with that??

Someone gave me a Sony camera (HDR-CX160) to try to get some footage out of...
Log and Transfer worked fine, but the resulting files in Capture Scratch are ProRes.  When I add them to the timeline, it requires rendering (Lengthy rendering), presumably to convert to AIC.
How can I get Log and Tranfer to go straight to AIC??

Do you have FCS or FCP-X installed on the same computer? Also, the HDR-CX160 is capable of shooting 60p which is not Log and Tansfer, or FCE compatible. You need to make sure the camera is recording 1080i60.
    Anyway, try this:
Open Log and Transfer, and click on the gear in the upper/center portion of the pane to select preferences:
When the preference open, navigate to AVCHD Plugin and choose Apple Intermediate Codec.
    Then try importing your files.

  • How do I select ProRes 422 on Log and Transfer window?

I went to preferences in upper right of log and transfer window, saw ProRes 422 was listed there but, still not seeing my clips after ingest say ProRes 422.
I have Capture preset also set to ProRes 422 in FCP 6.06

Yes, it only has that choice of ProRes 422 but, its not in that format after ingest.
I select TRANSCODE TO and it only has Apple ProRes 422 check marked.
Format says HDV1080p30 under compressor column in my log in Bin not ProRes422.
Wish I knew why its not importing correctly.
24p imports and converts to ProRes422 perfectly but, Im in 30p on this project.

  • Log and transfer problem with prores files

Working on RED project. Started several months ago. Shooting and logging as we go. Project setup on FCP, RED media converted to prores422 proxy with RED software(rocketcineX) and saved on Internal 2 TB RAID. NO problems for past 4 months. Moving prores422 proxy files into FCP via Log and Transfer. (I thought this was necessary, is it?) Anyway its working just fine. Loaded a thousand or so clips to date. Last transfer was August when brought in some P2 media. Now when I go and try to bring in the prores422 proxy clips as before suddenly I get error message of "unsupported media or invalid directory structure. This even applies to all the older files that I had already transferred by log and transfer. They worked before but now they don't. Any suggestions as to why the change? The project will be conformed back to original RED r3D files after edit. Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

First, get Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion (free) and trash FCP preference files. Run Disk Utility to repair all drives (Repair Permissions on OS drive). This should be done once a week, anyway. Disk Warrior would be your last resort (and should be run once a month on your drives, anyway). If Disk Warrior won't fix the problem, you have a dead hard drive. Replace it, restore from the backup you've been making of your data on a regular basis. I mean, you do have a backup that you do almost daily for such a large and important project, right?

  • Will upgrading GPU help log and transfer of 7D footage to ProRes

I have a 1.1 MacPro with 2.6 quad and ATI X1800.. Will upgrading my GPU to a ati 4870 5770 help with my log and trasnfer speeds..
Does Compressor or FCP use GPU during transcodes or log and transfers for either encode or decode?

Will upgrading my GPU to a ati 4870 5770 help with my log and trasnfer speeds..
    No. Only processor speed.
Does Compressor or FCP use GPU during transcodes or log and transfers for either encode or decode?
No. Only Motion and Color, and a few plugins (FXPlug) in FCP utilize the GPU. Compressor, FCP log and transfer...that's processor power.

  • I need to know best way to edit MXF files, with least rendering, is that converting the MXF or Log and Transfer? the end product is dvd, but I have lots and lots of these projects to do.

I am about to comence my Edit, and was told of Mpeg Streamclip, however this doesn't seem to work with my Canon XF305 Clips, the reason I was told to use it was so I wouldn't have to Render in Final Cut Pro all the time.. I do have the Canon Disc with the Plug in Utility and the update from their site.
Is it best to Convert these MXF files first and import them into FCP or use 'Log and Transfer', so far I am unable to do either!!
The projects on the timeline will have introduction .Movs already on it as a Template to re-use again and again with the new Footage ( MXF Files ) to be added and edited with transitions etc..This process is repeated again and again but with different MXF clips each time.
I am looking for the quickest and best way for workflow as there are 80 or more projects to do, each with 10 or so clips to be added to the timeline and Exported for DVD...Will I have to then Compress to fit onto DVD's??
I know Streamclip is an Mepeg 2 app but I thought the Canon XF305 Shot as mpeg2....
Is Log and Transfer my only Option?
Basically I need to know the quickest for Render purposes, and of course, the best way so the files aren't so huge etc etc.
Please, any suggestions would be greatly received....

We only work with PR422 files in FC7.  We use Shane's workflow with all 5D & MXF footage.
Make your life easier and stick to the ProRes family for your footage and edit sequences. Avoid H264 & convert any you have to ProRes.
Unless you are considering Blu-Ray the only way to deliver video on a DVD is to convert it to SD.
Depending on the length of your show you can make a Blu-Ray in Compressor but you have very limited authoring options when compared to DVD Studio Pro.
Compressor can also convert your HD to SD mpg-2 & Ac3 files. The best results usually come from setting the frame controls in the mpg-2 setting of Compressor to best. Depending on the the length of the show and your Qmaster settings this can take quite a while.
I personally find Compressor's HD to SD DVD conversion varies. Sometimes it is wonderful and sometimes not so much. I prefer the following as it is usually is faster and very consistent.
Export a quicktime movie (not QT conversion) of your final sequence
Import the exported HD file back into FC.
Create a SD 16x9 sequence and then drop in the recently exported HD seq and render. Rendering the sequence basically has FC doing the HD to SD conversion. Export the SD sequence and then convert to mpg-2 & ac3 in Compressor. While this does take time I still find it faster than Compressor with Qmaster utilizing all cores.
Another option is using jobs in Compressor
    http://pixelcorps.cachefly.net/macbreak-154-540p-h264.mov
In this workflow you would have Compressor convert the HD file to SD and then through jobs convert the SD file to mpg2 & Ac3.
In theory the jobs version could be faster (based on a number of variables- length, Qmaster, etc) but I haven't had time to compare the two.

  • A conclusion to ALL the AVCHD/.mts Log and Transfer Final Cut Pro 7 issues

    Hey all! Happy 2011!
So this is my first post here and hopefully when this thread concludes with all your help we should be able to help a lot of people and save them the heartache that I have recently had to endure by stating these things in plain English. I have some questions at the end which I think could be answered very easily! Please, no gobbledygook!
It would be great if people in the know can confirm/deny or comment on my points so those that are in a similar position to me can save their time and just get on with it.
    1) I have a Panasonic HDC-TM300 and it records in AVCHD/.mts files
    2) FCP 7 can deal with AVCHD files via the Log and Transfer feature if you do it straight from the camera or memory card and can convert to ProRes 422 (LT)?
    3) Log and Transfer _*DOES NOT WORK*_ if you move the AVCHD/.mts to an external drive without maintaining the folder structure?
    4) What is required from the folder structure that makes FCP act this way?
    5) Basically I have f*ed it by doing the part 3 above which I think is the most natural thing in the world to do! Im sure that many people have done the same thing as me please correct me if i’m wrong
After a lot of research on the internet I have come up with the following solutions and in brackets my thoughts on them. If anyone has any experience with them please please let me and other people know so I can get on with my life and editing these files.
    a) Harass the people that make FCP 7.0 and make sure that the next update solves this stupid/idiotic/ridiculous oversight. (This could take a while but i think we should do it for the sake of future generations)
    b) Someone could let us know about a workaround to this that may be the folder structure that FCP needs to be able to do L&T (needs to be simple so that everyone can do it. This would be the best short term solution until part a is completed)
    c) Buy one of the converter programs such as ClipWrap, Toast Titanium or Aunsoft mts converter. If so which is the most/ least recommended and why? (Least desirable option due to requirement for extra program so extra faffing and extra cost).
Thanks y’all and keep up the awesome work!!
    K*

    2) FCP 7 can deal with AVCHD files via the Log and Transfer feature if you do it straight from the camera or memory card and can convert to ProRes 422 (LT)?
    Yes.
    3) Log and Transfer DOES NOT WORK if you move the AVCHD/.mts to an external drive without maintaining the folder structure?
This is true of ANY tapeless format.
    4) What is required from the folder structure that makes FCP act this way?
This is due to the fact that most of them have files in those other folders in that structure that FCP needs to access in order to get all the proper components assembled properly. Sure, there are formats that have folders with nothing in them. Doesn't matter, FCP is designed to look at the full structure and work from that.
    5) Basically I have f*ed it by doing the part 3 above which I think is the most natural thing in the world to do!
The most natural thing in the world is to NOT backup everything? Well, that might be the case, since this comes up so darn often. But, it is wrong. The full structure must be maintained. This is true of many tapeless formats and more than just FCP. Avid and Premiere need this for certain tapeless formats too.
    a) Harass the people that make FCP 7.0 and make sure that the next update solves this stupid/idiotic/ridiculous oversight.
It isn't an oversight. It is designed like this on purpose. You need to learn how to do things right. You obviously know what that is now...keep the full card structure. So now it is up to you to continue to do things properly. Instead of insisting that an NLE conform the way it works to suit your needs.
    b) Someone could let us know about a workaround to this that may be the folder structure that FCP needs to be able to do L&T (needs to be simple so that everyone can do it. This would be the best short term solution until part a is completed)
Easy. Shoot a small bit on another card. Look at the folder structure. Recreate that structure in your backed up footage. Often this will mean making folders with exact names, even if they are empty. But if they have files in them, even small ones, then the first backup you did might not work....because those might be some of the small files FCP needs in order to do the L&T process properly. Always worth trying though.
    c) Buy one of the converter programs such as ClipWrap, Toast Titanium or Aunsoft mts converter. If so which is the most/ least recommended and why?
I highly recommend Clipwrap. Mainly because I haven't tried the others. But also because the author is always following the latest formats, and works hard to make sure his software works with them. It solved an importing issue I had with the Sony NXCam camera...within a week of me moaning about the issue.
Want a tutorial to walk you through the tapeless workflow in FCP? I have one. Tapeless Workflow for FCP 7 Tutorial You might know most of this, but watch it for other tips.

  • FCP Crash when opening log and transfer with some AVCHD footage on a card

    Hi,
I'm using a freshly (re)installed version of FCP 7 on a brand new macbookpro loaded with 8gb ram and equipped with a small 2ghz Intel Core i7
I get footage shot on Panasonic ag-hmr10 minicams coming on SD cards as AVCHD footage. Sometimes the files are quite big, 17gb of compressed footage.
When I go to log and transfer, to convert the footage in apple prores, the l/t window opens, I see a preview of my footage, than the spinning beach ball of death shows up and FCP crashes every time. I've tried deleting the preferences and reinstalling the software. Still, it keeps crashing. Now the same file on a different computer equipped with FCP will be processed, slowly but surely.
Now I know I can work around this problem by going to toast as an encoder, but I want to fix this issue so I can operate from FCP. I've seen this problem posted before but never found any good solution.
    Any suggestions?

Have you tried setting the L&T AVCHD audio conversion prefs to plain stereo?
    Open the L&T window.
Click on the gear icon towards the upper center of the frame.
Select "Plain Stereo" For the AVCHD plugin.

  • Glitches Convertng AVCHD using Log and Transfer

Hi, I'm converting a large batch of AVCHD to ProRes 422 using log and transfer for a project. I've converted almost all the footage, but have had to break down some longer clips because FCP7 won't convert the whole clip, it starts to act wonky. There is one large clip that I'm trying to convert a section of, that just won't convert and keeps giving me the annoying red exclamation point no matter what I do. I've tried changing the scratch disk, using the original name of the clip, unchecking "abort capture on dropped frames," changing the in and out on points--all the suggestions that I've found on discussion boards--nothing has worked. I've considered buying some external software, but am afraid the clip itself might be corrupted, though I've converted other sections of it with no problem. Any suggestions?

Hi Michael, Thanks for the quick response. I copied the clip, the whole card  to a different internal drive and FCP crashed  when I tried to transfer a section the troublesome clip. Here's part of the report I got after the crash:
    Application Specific Information:
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSMallocException', reason: '*** -[NSConcreteMutableData appendBytes:length:]: unable to allocate memory for length (75356)'
*** Call stack at first throw:
The camera is the Sony NEX-FS700. As I said before, I'm baffled. I've transferred two other sections from this same clip and also from all the other clips from this card with no problem. It was a couple of months ago, but I've not changed any settings or preferences.

  • Trouble with FCP7, .mts, and Log and Transfer

I'm trying to upload footage from a Canon Vixia S200, and Log and Transfer won't work. For reference, the footage is stored on the SD cards in the camera rather than internal memory. When I tried Log and Transfer for an older Vixia that used internal memory, Log and Transfer worked. Is there some way around this?

FCP 7 doesn't work with 1080p60. That format came out after it's last update.  You need to use ClipWrap2 to convert the footage to ProRes 422...or use another editing app that will work with this footage.

  • Log and transfer files from sd card?

Is it possible to utilize log and transfer form the SD card shot on a Canon DSLR in FCP to transcode to ProRes 422?  Is there a plug in plug in?

I downloaded the canon software and it works like a charm on the MacBook Pro but I seem to be having an installation issue with the plug in into FCP on the Power Mac G5 ... it doesn't show up as an option when in Preferences in the log and transfer window.  I am using a usb card reader and the card is mounting on the desktop and there are no photo images on the card ... Are there issues with the G5 - OSX 4.11- FCS 6.06 or an external usb sd card reader?

  • Mavericks and Final Cut Pro 7 - Log and Transfer crashes

Hi all. I (perhaps unintelligently) upgraded to OSX Mavericks on my Mac Pro while working on a project in Final Cut Pro 7. What is good news is that FCP 7 still works for the most part. The bad news is that Log and Transfer crashes.
I have a Panasonic P2 camera and I dump video via FireWire 800. When I first click on the Log and Transfer button, nothing happens. When I click on it again, the Log and Transfer window opens, but then FCP 7 crashes.
Is there any way to get video from my P2 card into the project without Log and Transfer?
Also, would any of these options work?
Trash preferences (working to figure out how to do that on Mavericks)
Worst case, re-format and re-install Lion (Don't have much time to do that)
Please let me know if you have a work around or a fix for this. I need to have this solved TODAY.
I appreciate your help in advance.

I am having the same issue on my iMac that was udated to Mavericks a while back and apparently I haven't tried to log and transfer anything since.
The error comes up everytime I have a my Sandisk High Speed Card in my lexar Fire Wire 800 card reader. The Log and Transfer screen pops up and it starts adding the clips and instead of populating the screen, it crashes. Mine also says FCP quit while using the canonIHL plug in, here's a screen shot of the indication.
I agree, this needs to be resolved ASAP. I'm dead in the water. The only thing I can do is transfer the raw files into a folder somewhere, then import the clips, but then to have them as ProRes files I guess I would have to use compressor before hand. I've done it before, but it never runs as smoothly without it being natively imported.

  • Canon 650D doesn't support FCP 7 log and transfer...

Canon 650D doesn't support FCP 7 log and transfer...
anyone know how to solve this problem?  thanks alot

Download and install the latest version of the E-1 plugin from Canon’s website here:
    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/eos_slr_camera_systems/eos_digita l_slr_cameras/eos_rebel_t4i#DriversAndSoftware
If this didn't work, follow this creativecow post to modify cameras.plist file; if there's still no go, follow this guide to either modify the .plist file or convert your footage to Apple ProRes, the native editing format of Final Cut Pro.
    Hope this helps

  • Log and Transfer - XDCam to Pro-Res

Does anyone know a way to transfer XDCam footage directly to Apple Pro-Res using Log and Transfer?
    Thanks,
    M

Thanks meg. I'm trying not to have to sync all the rushes in a timeline. All rushes are in the one 58 min prores file. I wanted to, I guess, log and capture the rushes as clips that I logg in the log and transfer winnow and that it would then log and sort out the material as proxy files. I'm guessing I'm just being lazy or it can't be done. Thanks for the reply but I was looking for a differentbway round than a straight import of the whole file.

  • Log and Transfer:XDCAM

Is it possible to set up the Log and Transfer to convert the footage to XDCAM instead of ProRes?
    Thanks in advance.

You will not be able to transcode directly to ProRez, you will just use Log & Transfer to rewrap these XD Cam files into quicktime .mov files. If you are looking for a solution to export from the timeline back to XD Cam then open the File/Export/Sony XD Cam method.
    Good Luck
