Deinterlacing In FCE OK - What About iDVD?

In another thread I printed the results of 2 test slideshows - one made in FCE and the other in iDVD. They were both burned on the same DVD using Best Quality.
I couldn't see any quality differences other than the FCE slideshow exhibited more interlacing flicker on certain slides.
I had not used a TV monitor but if I had, I would have been able to use the Deinterlace Filter to eradicate it.
I then realised that iDVD has no such filter, nor can you preview your project on a TV.
Is there any way of previewing an iDVD project on TV and is there any way of removing flicker.
Or is iDVD less prone to producing flicker in the first place.
Ian.

Thanks Tom.
I assume that the one pixel blur would only be effective if the slide was approximately video frame size and not 2560x1920?
Usually only a few photos display flicker and it can only be spotted when you get it in FCE.
This means you either give every slide some blur before importing or find out which ones are affected after they are in FCE and blur those in Photoshop.
I think I have just realised something!...........
........there was a pause for a few minutes whilst I tested an idea!
I opened the source files in Photoshop and altered the one that FCE showed was dodgy.
The file went offline but after reconnecting, the newly modified file was in my project. Eureka!
I suppose it was simple really but I had never thought of it before!
Ian.

  • FCE to iMov to iDVD = generation loss

The only way I have found to burn projects on the internal iMac DVD drive is to
    a) export using QT
    b) import into iMovie
    c) burn from iDVD
It's so frustrating bec the newly burned DVD looks like it was all shot
on an ancient VHS camera and is fuzzier than a youtube video....
    1. how to maintain clarity all the way through? OR
    2. is there a way to burn right out of FCE?
    thx, Hil

    I don't know settings/codec of source footage;
I expect gen loss between old format tapes
transferred to DVD then off DVD into FCE.
What I'm talking about is the diff betw
    FCE to finished DVD.
There are two options FCE offers for export:
    export ---> QuickTime movie
    ---> Using QuickTime Conversion
The former, which I always use, never offers export settings
(once, as an experiment, I tried the latter,
    gen loss was even worse).
    Yes, burning SD.

  • "About iDVD" and "Preferences" grayed out?

OK, this is a bit weird.  I opened iDVD (which I do once a year to make my year-end slideshow on a DVD).  I wanted to find out what version of iDVD I have (because I'd like to buy a manual).  But "About iDVD" and "Preferences" are grayed out!  Does anyone know why this would happen?
MacBook Pro (2010), Mountain Lion, all the updates.
    Thank you.

You must have an iDVD project open before they become active.  You can't access it from the splash window where you select the type of project to create.

  • VHS-like quality after HD FCE project exported for iDVD...ANy idea's

Shot on a HF10, project edited in FCE and exported to iDVD. Viewing it on a TV is like watching an extremely bad VHS tape. The image is very grainy and it looks horrible. When I play back the quicktime file on the computer, the quality looks fine. Is it a problem with the encoding in iDVD? Please help!

Yes and no... isn't that helpful?
You can't write things back to the camera from the Mac side, but you can within Windows using the software that came with the HF10.
What I haven't tried, but it might be interesting to do, would be to take a project, burn it as a BDMV folder via Toast, and then replace the BDMV folder on a flash card on the camera. I might try it and let you know what I find out.
Edit: Tried it - That's a definitive no

  • HT3258 what about final cut does not recognize mts file

what about final cut does not recognize mts file

If you have an AVCHD camcorder, you need to select one of the AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec Easy Setups in FCE that matches how you shot the video in your camcorder.  (eg, AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60 would be appropriate for camcorders produced for North America unless you selected some other video type in the camera's setup.)   After selecting the appropriate Easy Setup, create a new sequence then import the video from your camcorder.
If you only have the .mts files themselves (perhaps because you copied them to your hard drive without their entire surrounding AVCHD folder structure), that's another matter.  In that case you need Clipwrap or similar app to transcode the .mts files to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec before importing them into FCE.   You still need to have the correct easy setup in FCE.
It would help to know exactly what make/model camcorder you have, and what model Mac and versions of OS X and QuickTime.

i want to produce wedding dvds.whats the best software to use...final cut x I'm thinking but what about the quality of the dvd? Can i use idvd?

The only Programms I worked with are DVD Studio Pro and iDVD. You can burn a Video-DVD with Toast but  there is no real option to design your Menu. Just a few themes as far as I discovered.
Do you have a Blue Ray Device to burn* the HD-DVD? Are the Bride and Groom able to watch the Blue Ray?
    * which is only possible with DVD Studio Pro and not iMovie as far as I know.
    This might help
For better quality I would go the Compressor & DVD Studio Pro workflow I just learned.
Export the Movie as is from Final Cut Pro and then use Compressor to encode the File.
Consider delivering the Movie in a different way like a private video on vimeo, a Website or on an SD card which is not really romantic...

  • NTSC to PAL conversion - what about audio?

I'm converting an NTSC project to PAL. I'm using JES Deinterlacer to convert my Mpeg 2s to PAL at 25fps. What about my AC3 audio clips? How do convert them from 29.97 to 25fps?

Just to be clear, sound is the same. It does not matter what video standard you are using as audio is independent of the video standard. Just re-use the .ac3s that you have already got.
Note that one second filled with about 29.97 video frames lasts the same time as one second of exactly 25 video frames, and my watch has moved on one second!
P.S. There's one caveat - if you change the length (running-time) of your video for some reason, you would have to adjust the audio to match. This only happens if you are using conversion "cheats" like mapping 29.97fps to 23.98fps progressive, and then going to PAL, for instance.

Spotlight lists items and shows preview images.  BUT what about showing the path/location address of an item in my computer.
Especially important if I've put the item in the wrong folder and what to locate it without multi-steps. iMac OS X 10.5 was more useful.
Old OSX Spotlight function automatically displayed path/location within the machine:  e.g. desktop/folder/sub-folder/item.
Can I make Spotlight show the path?

Press option-command and the path is displayed at the bottom of the little preview window.  Press command-return and the enclosing folder opens.

  • HT5071 Is it possible to call a locally installed ibook from a hyperlink? What about to a bookmark?

Is it possible to call a locally installed ibook from a hyperlink? What about to a bookmarked page?
    I have 2 questions..
    1. Can I send a link via email that when launched will open an ibook that has already been downloaded to the bookshelf?
    2. If question 1 is possible, can I take it a step further and call a bookmark, i.e. chapter 3.
Our company has it's own appstore and I want to send out links to sections of the ibooks using bookmarks or at the very least take them to the start of the ibook.
I don't need to give them a link to install the ibook as they already have it installed.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Chris.

That would be cool, but it's not possible. The ibook is not accessible by URL in the user's bookshelf.

The recommended solution for most families is to share the same Apple ID for iTunes and App Store purchases, so you can share your purchases, but us different IDs for iMessage, FaceTime and iCloud.  With this arrangement, each person can automatically download purchases made on the shared ID (by turning this feature on in Settings>iTunes & App Stores), while keeping their FaceTime calls, text messages and iCloud data (including photo stream) separated.  There is no requirement that the ID you use for purchasing be the same as the ID you use for these other services.

You need to create a user account for your wife (or yourself depending on who has the current user account). When syncing, each of you should sign in as a separate user, login to iTunes and then sync. I had this problem when my sister got an iPhone. When we did her initial sync, everything on my iPhone showed up on hers. Apple gave me this solution.

    No.
One of you create a new AppleID and one use the existing AppleID.
But you can still use the items in each iTunes library.
Create separate computer logins for each of you.
This will give you each your own data. Contacts, calendars, photos, etc. (and your own iTunes library).

"Can you put purchased DVD movies that you have on your ipod? "
No.  breaking the encryption in order to copy them illegal.
" what about recorded DVD's that you have? "
    Add them to itunes.

Sounds like you didn't plan enough space. Not w/o destroying (backup) your current partitioning to install each natively.
Maybe Parallels would fit your needs.
