Delay getting new gmails in Mail

Hi -
For some reason there's a pretty major delay - sometimes 30 minutes-plus - in seeing new email in my inbox on apple Mail.  I know because they come in just fine on my iphone, iPad, and web gmail.
I have everything set up via IMAP, which is the recommended course.  Even when I hit Get Mail manually, it doesn't get the new mail.
What's the deal?!  Is this part of the Apple-Google dustup or something?  Any help would be MUCh appreciated!!
Thanks,
Andrew

This is still an issue, not just with gmail but with godaddy. Email will arrive on my iPhone but not on my computer for 20 or 30 minutes or more. Sometimes it helps to close and reopen Mail on my Macbook Pro; in that case all the backed up stuff usually comes rushing in. But these delays are a big pain. Anybody having any success in solving this? Thanks.
PS--I just found this KB article that is relevant. Makes it seem that this is just the way life is, which is absurd:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5367?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
A simpler approach is simply to turn off wifi momentarily (using icon in menubar) and then turn it back on. Again, not a very satisfactory solution.

    Hello anderson113,
It may help to force close the affected apps, then restart your iPhone.
Force an app to close in iOS

Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

If you're still experiencing issues, the next step would be to restore the device.

  • Long delay getting new mail

I am experiencing a long delay in Mail getting new mail. Here's what happens:
    1. on launching Mail, it gets new mail immediately, so I know my account settings are good.
    2. once Mail is running, there is a long delay in updating new incoming mail -- can be hours. I have Mail set to check every five minutes. Also, I can manually click on Get Mail and I get a No New Mail beep even when there is new mail (see next point).
    3. If I use webmail to access my account, I can see new mail sitting in my In Box.
    4. if I quit and relaunch Mail, the new mail shows up.
I have an IMAP account which has worked well for years. This delayed behaviour started a few months ago when I was running Leopard. I posted a question but never got an answer that worked. Now I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.4, and hoped Mail would correct itself with the upgrade. It didn't.
I was once advised that it might have something to do with the Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > "Use IDLE command if the server supports it" setting. However, this preference is ticked and greyed out so I can't change it. (The advice was to turn it on or off and see if that was a fix).
I am running on an iMac 24" Core 2 duo (early 2008 model). After the Snow Leopard upgrade I repaired permissions and ran all the chron scripts. So my system should be pretty good.
I would be grateful for any help. I have clients call and say "I just sent you an email..." and I appear dumb because I have to go to webmail to get it right away.

It's getting better. I used Other to setup my mail acc via MfE, by tricking it to a non uniform mail. That worked, I changed it back to googlemail and guess what?! Next time I boot the phone, the MfE is gone. but it still registers in the background so I can't create a new one. Configuration Tool 6.3 does see it but cannot overwrite it. PixiEnables package and its font nonsens severly screw with PopUpClock, Screensaver and SleepingScreen memory boundaries so those three crash. Thanks for nothing MS apps -.-

  • Every time I click on Get New Messages the mail server goes off line.

I am using OS X Lion. This problem started when I applied the latest update to Snow Leopard and continued on into OS X Lion.
In Mac Mail, every time I click on Get New Messages All The Accounts go off line. I bring all the accounts on line, click
Get New Messages, they go off line.

  • Mail 3.6 Inbox not getting new Gmail mail

So since I updated to 10.5.7 and 10.5.8 (both use Mail 3.6), the Inbox of Mail will not populate properly from my gmail hosted IMAP account. The All Mail and label folders are all fine but the Inbox won't show messages newer than 11:28 am on August 4th.. it's the 7th now.
I've tried rebuilding the inbox, turning off my rules, hunting through the preference files, removing the account and making a new one (re-downloading all mail for that account) - nothing works. I either get the same stopping point or I get a completely blank (empty) inbox.
    Anyone know of a fix?

I've been experiencing this for 3 months now. Totally sporadic. I've checked preferences, rebuilt mailboxes, etc. to no avail. It's like going to start an unreliable car on a cold morning. Sometimes it cranks, sometimes it doesn't. Hasn't downloaded new mail for a day. Probably will tomorrow.
I'd like to go to 10.5.8, but I don't want things to get worse. When I really need to read email (other than my iPhone), I fire up Thunderbird, and there are all my new messages.
Come on, Apple! I'd rather be using Mail!

  • Is there a way to get new messages in mail to pop up on the dock?

    Hello,
On my iMac I use the Mail application to get my e-mails. At work I'm on a PC and use Thunderbird and I have no idea how it was set up but I automatically get an alert on my taskbar where the new e-mail pops up.
Is this possible in the Mail applcation?

    elmac,
Yes, I already have the red circle option on my mail but the sound idea is a good one too. How do you do that? Under preferences in Mail?
What I was wanting is an actual dialogue box to come up at the bottom right of my screen that posts the first few lines of the e-mail and who it's from. That's how my Thunderbird works so just wondered if it could be done with the mail app.

  • HT6030 Getting new gmail into the inbox

Just installed Mavericks and now all my new gamil is going into an Archive folder and not my inbox...
How do I get it where app should have it already?
And what is with the latest OS listed at the bottom of the Operating Systems options below?
Doesn't Apple think their way through things anymore?

You can do a forums search for the difference in imap and POP accounts.
They will behave differently in relation to your iphone.

  • I have a gmail account set up on my macbook pro. One mail I sent with photos continues to repeatedly downloaded in Recovery. At the same time my Gmail won't download new emails into Inbox when I press Get New Mail. Help

I have a gmail account set up on my mac. A few days ago I sent an email with photos in it and this email now is continuosly being recovered. In the meantime my inbox has stopped downloading new messages, even when i press Get New Mail. How can I stop the repeated recovery of the email and how can I get my inbox to download again?

OK, I persevered and used the Rebuild mailbox option on Mail, actually had to do it twice, but now when I boot up and Mail opens all the previously received iCloud messages I've read on iPhone/iPad are pushed through.
    Back to normal...

  • Mail doesn't play any sound with new Gmail emails

I just signed for a Gmail account but I see it works in a someway different manner from the other email accounts I have. I noticed that Mail shows me a new incoming email almost immediately since I click send from another account, that's a good thing, but unfortunately it doesn't play any sound, like instead it does when I receive emails on the other accounts.
    any suggestions?

I have noticed with 10.6.x Mail doesn't make sounds when receiving/sending Mail when you first launch it. However if I leave it open (just minimize it) and let it run and Mail goes get new email sound suddenly makes the sounds. I am still trying to figure out why it is happening (on both of my Macs). If you get any idea please share it because I would like to know also.

  • Native Mail app unable to get new mail after updating to iOS 5.0.1

Just after I installed 5.0.1 (OTA) I've noticed that native ios mail client is unable to get new mail messages anymore. I have three seperate mail accounts (Gmail, Hotmail, iCloud) connected to my iPad2 and none of them works after this software update. All I get is three seperate error messages (Cannot Get Mail) one after another for each account, same kinda of messages as you get once you try to open your Mail app with no internet connection, but this time it's not an issue as my iPad is connected to my home WiFi which is working just fine.
I've tried to restart my device, checked mail settings, made sure all the passwords are ok by typing them once again for all the accounts and I managed to get confirmation that they're ok with no difficulties using the same device.
All other apps that uses internet connection seems to be working with no problems as well.

    Any ideas?

Once I got new mail messages to each mailbox it seems that everything got back to normal.

  • Can't get new mail nor view last 2 years of mail

I am running OSX 10.6.8 with Mail 4.6 using a POP connection to pull emails from Gmail. While Mail updates Apple RSS feeds, it does not get new mail. Also I can't view any mail I have received since 2012. Since Mail 4.6 was only copyrighted until 2012 is that what is going on? I regularly update software so I presumed my mail software was being kept up to date. Also I have 12K piece of mail , could that be an issue? Could I be receiving the mail and its hidden? Please advise. Thanks

Although no one responded I am posting because this is a cautionary tale. The key problem was that I was synching my mail account to Gmail through POP whereas gmail switched to IMAP two years ago. Because I was unaware of this switch (let's not talk about that) three things were happening. My mail could not get new mail as it was looking for a non-existent i.e. retired connection protocol. So 1) couldn't read new mail, 2) could delete or clean up mail and 3) which was by far the worst part was that the synching I had set up between address book and gmail contacts was going crazy metastisizing contacts and that was putting a strain on my CPU where often 90 % of the CPU use was going to trying something it could not due. Which meant my computer was running very very slowly to the point where I was ready to junk it.

  • Is there a way to make Mailbox automatically update as soon as you get new mail?

I just got an iPhone 4, and I noticed that my mailbox only updates when I open it, even if I received new mail since I last checked. Is there a way to make it automatically update when I get new mail in my inbox? There's sort of no point to alerting me when I get new mail if I'm already in the inbox.
I dunno if it matters, but my mail box is synced to a gmail account.
I also don't really know what my operating system is, but I guess it's iOS 6 since it's a new phone? I don't know how to check.

It depends on how you have mail checking your mail. You mention that you have a Gmail account. Did you set this up as an Exchange account to use Push? If you have mail set to only check manually, then that is what will happen, it will only update manually. If you have it set to one of the other time settings, it will update like that, as that will be the only time it will connect to the mail server, even with the application open.

  • Mail won't get new mail after a while

Running Mail app on my Powerbook on OS 10.5.8. I use this as my work computer. More and more frequently I find that Mail is not retrieving my messages after being open for a while. The main account is a gmail IMAP account. I am also running Mail Act-On and MailTags, which are key utilities in my workflow.
I try clicking on Get New Mail, or "Synchronize IMAP Account," and taking all accounts offline and then taking them online, but these do not help.
Quitting and relaunching Mail sometimes helps, but not always! Is there anything else I should try? This is making me crazy!

I think you should open the Mail folder -- Home/Library/Mail -- and locate the file named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3 and delete it, after having Quit Mail. Open each POP account folder in the Mail folder, and make sure there are no other files of similar name within these folders.
Deleting this file, and relaunching Mail will result in its downloading whatever messages remain on the server, and may give you some duplicates, but this import file will be renewed and fresh.
