Delay getting old number transferred

I transferred broadband and phone from Virgin Media and requested to take my old number with me (same exchange, same house) I have been here over 50 years with same number and it was the number for this house for many years before we moved in. All my family, friends, acquaintances, bank, school, GP etc etc etc know me by this number.
I was given a temporary number for 2 weeks.
Then BT contacted me, said that VM would not hand over the number because it had to be me who asked them to transfer it. I contacted VM who denied receiving any request from BT. No-one at any time had told me that I had to request VM to transfer as well as BT. I assumed that BT would handle it all.
Back to BT. Eventually they said the order was in for my number and I would be connected midnight 30 April 2015 and they would ring me if any problems. On May 1st I tried ringing the number from my mobile - no line. I dialled 17070 and learnt that I have yet a third number - not the one I wanted to keep.
How long is this going to go on? I believe there is a limit beyond which my original number can't be transferred? I have already contacted everyone to say that I had a temporary number, I DO NOT want to contact them all again to tell them yet another temporary number, and anyway I want the one I have had all the time I have lived in this house, which is as much part of the house as its street number.

I've had my old O2 number transferred to my new iphone 4s on 3. my facetime and imessage show my transferred number but in the phone settings its still showing as the number that came with the phone.
When i message someone it seems to be showing as either one or the other if its a text conversation its converting from one to the other then back again. Also on imessage its reverted to using my email address.
Does anyone know how to make it so that everything is showing the correct number. i have turned both facetime/imessage off, turned my phone off and on again turned facetime/imessage back on again which sorted the numbers showing on them. But in phone settings thats not done the trick.

When you go to Settings>Phone, what shows as your phone number? Is the temporary number you describe there or your regular phone number? You should be able to set it there. I don't know if there is a new place for setting anything associated with iMessage. I cannot find any reference in the iOS 5 manual regarding changing settings.

after somthing the transfer like 24 later hours they transfered my old number from another carrier witch is 054-xxxxxx
and now not working.

Hi guys,
I keep getting "waiting for activation" on my iMessage. I can only send/receive iMessage from my email address, NOT my phone number.
I have done all kind of fixing suggestions that I can find online, but nothing works so far.
- Date & time set as automatic (I don't know why this matter, but mine was already set as automatic from the begining)
- Reset network setting
- Changing the DNS to 8.8.8.8.
- Restore to factory setting (from back up & as new iPhone)
- Turning on/off iMessage & facetime
- Sign out/in of apple ID
- Change location from apple ID
- Hard reset/reboot
And many others.
...me too. I'm in Portugal having the same issue!! Hopefuly Apple will give us a solution, shortly...

How can I change the number displayed when I make a call/send a sms? Despite transferring my old number across to my iphone messages.and Facetime are made from the original sim number and not mine. Any ideas?

I've transferred my old number by PAT code to my new iphone and most of the time it works fine however there are problems when replying to tests and using Facetime when the original sim muber is displayed. My frined can text me on my correct number but if I reply she receives it from the different number. Also when using Facetime the number displayed is the one the came with the iphone. Anyone know what to do to get the number id correct?

How long should it take to get my old number back ...

I moved house 4 working days ago. New house is on same exchange as old, sa asked to keep my old number.
The order is apparently in two parts:
1) Cease line at old address - done on day "1"
2) Connect new line at new address - engineers "cancelled" on Day 1. No reasons given on the order and I wasn't contacted to tell me all had gone to a ball of chalk..... I'd have been none the wiser had I not bothered to check.
Over the weekend I spoke with various people, leading to a new order for a new line, to be installed on day "4" (today). It wasn't possible to pull my old number out of the allocatable pool (presumably (good!) it was still allocated to the cancelled order?) The engineers were "asked" in a note on the order to move my old number back onto the line.
This line is now up and running on a temporary number.
As my O2 broadband reconnection is waiting till I have a line with a stable number on it and I am keen to get it back asap, how long should I have to wait? Is there anything that could happen that will sabotage getting my number back and what should I do to prevent this?

I am with you on this and am very interested also as to the answer.
I was originally with BT, then moved to Sky as I wanted Sky TV, and thought it best to get the complete package. They never once mentioned, "oh by the way if you move home you lose your number". I think they should highlight this, and then watch there customer base drop.
Anyways, that aside. I have decided to come back to BT, and BT have created a new number at my new address, and when the line is activated I have to call to get a renumber and hope that the number I want hasn't been taken.
i presume by law Sky have to put the number back into the pool, and therefore should be able to get BT to get it back. Fingers crossed.

Restore the device from the backup created.
If no backup exists, there is nothing to recover.

When a contact gets a new phone number, I delete the old and enter the new. Then when I text or call the old number shows up as a selection yet it's no longer under the contacts info.

That's normal behavior as the old one will remain in the memory cache for a while until it's eventually overwritten. If it's particularly bothersome to you, you can restore your phone as NEW and this will empty the cache.

Try Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your device.
Note you may have to re-enter stored Wi-Fi passwords after using this feature.

Either backup the contacts in iCloud or with a compatible programme on your computer (Outlook, Windows Contacts, Address Book etc).
Once done, sync the contacts to your new iPhone from that programme/iCloud.

My number has been disconnected for over 10 months because I was out of the country. Now that I am back I would like to have my number back since I have had the number for 5-6 years. I have been told by verizon that the number is not in use, but it is aging. verizon won"t tell my how long this aging process is going to take nor are they willing to help in any way. I just don't see why I can"t have my phone number back if nobody is using it. is there no way to get my number out of this aging stage? Is there anything I can do to get it back?

It's great to hear that you are interested in starting service back up with Verizon. It's unfortunate that you had to leave us before but its great that you want to come back! In regards to obtaining your former number typically if you are reconnecting your service with in 30 days this is an easy process to complete. How long has it been since you canceled service with us? Thanks for the question. Based on the information you have provided, it sounds like your previous phone number is still activated with iMessage. The following resource may provide a solution:

You can port your number over from Nextel to ATT.
You will need to transfer your data to Addressbook on your Mac to save your contact list. Calendar info will be sent to iCal and pics should be transferred to iPhoto. When you sync the iPhone, it will get your contact info out of Addressbook.
