Delay in turning on...

Help! My iPod for some reason does not automatically come to life when I press the play button...in order to get it on I have to hold down the menu and center buttons.
This happens even if the iPod has only been off for 5-10 minutes. (I know this is common if it has been off for a long period of time.)
It's a 20GB, purchased in September 04. Could this be a battery issue? I also just downloaded the new update - could it be something with that?

It's not that severe. In fact it's a common fix for iPod problems, and yes, your iTunes library will remain unaffected and you will be able to reload the songs again afterward.

Keyboard delay

I use the new aluminum flat keyboard with a C2D mini - update applied - and get delays in letters showing up on the screen. Any suggestions about what might be going on. I'm aware of the caps lock delay.

I turned off delay until repeat in System Preferences and that helped some. I still get a lot of space key failures even though I have a nice shiny spot directly in the middle of the space key.

I've no .otf fonts installed anywhere but in C:\Fonts but on the 18th I went ahead and uninstalled KB2982791 and KB2975719 anyway as Microsoft advised. The other two, KB2970228, and KB2975331 were apparently never installed here. This leaves
13 of the August updates still intact.
I can verify that the content of the font cache file that Microsoft suggests deleting is now different than before the deletion.
My system, which wasn't unstable with all the August updates in, apparently isn't unstable without KB2982791 and KB2975719 either (it's already crunched through many terabytes of data and it's run for nearly 7 days without a glitch), so for me personally
this is all a bit academic. However, in the grander sense, it's disturbing that Windows Updates now must be regarded with greater suspicion. Perhaps when the next set comes out I should run them for a week or more in a VM before deciding
to update my workstation.

My Macbook Pro Retina 2012 is running very slow and gives me frequent speed problems.

So, I've noticed it happen gradually for about a year now. It started with just minor but not significant delays in opening up programs, but I didn't mind it because the computer was still fast compared to a PC, which is what I used to use before this Macbook. I got this macbook in 2012, and luckily I still have a warranty, but it'll close soon.
Right now, some problems include:

2) Shutting down and turning on the computer is slow (sorry no picture on this one). When I first bought this mac, and until about a year ago, whenever I turn it on/off it would do it instantly. But now, there is a bit of a delay when turning off. The screen seems to just freeze at a certain frame, stays that way for a few seconds (longer when turning it off right after playing a game or two-- don't worry they're compatible with Mac OS), and then shuts off. And when it's frozen at that frame time, you can still see the background materials because they're only faded away. You know what I'm talking about-- Macbook turns out when turning off and then shuts down. So, much of the screen is white, but you can still see the screen prior to the shut down faded.
3) Internet is running extremely slow. When I check my speed at speedtest.net, I get around 47 mbps on bad days and 53-ish on good days (download speed)

Resetting computer to factory conditions doesn't work, time-machine didn't work, and clearing more storage space didn't work either. I would like to get this problem fixed before my warranty runs out. Thanks for reading and any sort of help will be appreciated!

Do you know of any specific tasks or situations that cause it to perform poorly? If so, make a note of those and demonstrate them for Apple. Do NOT, under any circumstances, restart the machine. You want it at its worst when you take it in. If you try to do any of those magic resets, it may just reset things just long enough for Apple to proclaim it healthy. If Apple does that anyway, then there are plenty of opportunities to try those things later after your warranty has expired.
I wish I knew exactly when it does this, but it doesn't always happen. It sometimes does, and sometimes doesn't. I thought about this, too. But the problem is that it's really hard to catch a time or figure out what causes these symptoms to occur. I haven't taken it to Apple because I thought it'll just be a waste of time because they'll probably say that it's healthy so they don't have to put any money/effort to try and fix it...

Several sever Problems with firefox

I'm really disaapointed with the new Version of FireFox. Till Version 8, after every update ther was an improvement of several features, but frfom than on, it's getting worse.
Since than Firefox is starting slower and slower and it dioesn't matter how much tabs are open after the last close of Firefox ot how much add onss are aktivated. Today Firefox needs up to one minute to be ready to use. Often it returns to a non responding state.
I'm running on Windows 7 64bit Ultimate and did not have any Problems with Versions till 8. I own two desktops.
One with the Ultimate edition of Windows 7 and one with the home premium edition. The Ultimate is having 8GB Main memory and the other one is using 6 GB as Main Memory and here are the most problems. Both desktops are Multicore processor machines with more than 2400 GhZ speed, which should be enough for the machine and for Firefox.
The difference is also the use of a different Antivirus Programs. On the Home Premium machine there is running Kaspersky Internet Suite, and on the other Norton Antivirus internet Security.
The startup behaviour on both machines is equal. Slow, Slower , slowest. On Home Premium machine (6GB) there is an ammusing Problem with a special URL, which works fine on the Ultimate machine. The URL is http://www.autoscout24.de/.
When using this page you can do everything on both machines till the moment you select a car you want to have details. The details are shown quit well but if you tab the back button, the home premium machine is staying on the same side and die not go back to the prevous side as the other did. The Home Premium machine is going into "not Responding" state and never turns back. On Both Machines I tried to give a feedback with the function in the "Help Menu". On Both machines it didn't work. The best Version is the avtual Version for Ubuntu. Here everythings seems to work fine.
Till this problems are solved I'm using Opera because it is runing fast and more stable.
I was using firefox because of it's easy way to use extenssions. But as it is on Windows it is a realy noGo.

As of April 28 I was no longer able to access my Yahoo mail account from any links while using Firefox (4.0). When I clicked on the link(s) I was getting an error notice (404 Not Found). Even when I went to the Yahoo home page and tried using their link I was getting the same message.
I installed IE8 and again established MyYahoo home page with mail preview, and I was....sometimes....able to access the mail account via the links, but I was also getting substantial delays in page turning and/or complete freezes which I had to terminate with the task manager.
I then installed the Chrome browser with MyYahoo as my home page and it eliminated most all the issues, but I am still getting a delayed page turn on occasion.
In summary, it appears the problems are browser related, but I have not received any suggestions or comments from tech support forums including Yahoo customer care on how to correct these issues.
I have run malware scans (and found none) with Avast 6.0.1091, Malwarebytes, Mamutu, and Ad Aware.
I would like to repair this issue with Firefox because of all the features it offers to which I've become accustomed to using, but Chrome is much faster and it's tempting to just switch altogether.

Issues with recent updates

I am not able to download any of the updates (even the new release 10.6.6) because a message appears telling me that an error has occurred during download.
The internet connection works fine, but today I have encountered serious delays in turning on my macbook, and several problems with finder (did not respond).
Can anyone help me?

Your information is sketchy and meanders. You may have several issues but with the lack of information it's going to be 20 questions. So how were you downloading the update? Software Update or direct from Apple web site? Today's issues need more clarification.

Power Saving Mode

Within the power saving mode, what exactly does the option "Put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" do? if I want to keep my computer on because I like to listen to music stations while falling to sleep but I don't change it, should I turn that off or on? If it's on, will it shut the computer and the music off if I don't use touch my computer after a while?

The disks spin when you are accessing data. The system keeps the HDD on to make sure that data is available when you need it -- no ramp up delay.
Turning it off when possible saves power and reduces heat. Streaming audio should not be affected since it does not require storage unless you do not have sufficient RAM, in which case, the system needs to swap to disk.

I had developed a custom timeout warning for BSP that I had been considering adapting to WDA. Here is what I was thinking (see if it helps you out).
I was think about building it as a separate component that could be included in another component via a UI Element Container. The component wouldn't have any visible UI elements - just a timer control and logic.
On each request/response (probably in the WDDOMODIFYVIEW event handler) we will have recalculate the timeout for the timer becasue it has just been refresh.
Here is the logic from BSP to determine the timeout that I was going to adjust. I think it would just need the call for the ICF timeout:

Now when the timer actually triggers in the WDA, it will trigger a server event and reset the actual timeout. In BSP this isn't a problem, because we do the dialog all via JavaScript and avoid a server refresh. In WDA even though the backend timeout has been reset, we would just continue processing as though it hasn't been. I would produce a popup warning the user that they are about to timeout. This popup will have a timer that if it doesn't receive an answer after 1 minute (configurable) it will force closure (exit navigation). The user can choose to renew their timeout (actually it was already renewed by the popup server roundtrip - but they won't know that). This will actually just close the popup dialog.

Get rid of small loading icon?

Is there a way to get rid of the small loading icon. I have several animations created in Edge that i have exported out as a .oam file. It took a bit but i've got the animations playing appropriately by using the delay.125 method and one had to go to .25 delay. While i dont like that as a solution, it will work. My problem though is the small loading swirl that flashes on the screen for that delay. Yeah its not much but its distracting and takes away from the clean look of the folio. Anyone have any suggestions?

The poster image wasn't working for me, a solution i have found is to duplicate the background placing my animation .oam file between them. The upper layer has two object states one visible and the other invisible. I basically just set it up to be visible before the .oam loads and then after the delay it turns off displaying the animation appropriately without the tiny loading symbol. However i still feel this is something that should addressed in the software as opposed to coming up with a workaround.

Trackpad: Please fix the drivers.

Dear whoever is responsible for Boot Camp drivers for Windows,
You must know that the trackpad drivers are nearly unusable in Windows, right? Since you go to so much trouble to support Boot Camp, won't you spend a couple days fixing the drivers?
My primary complaint, shared by tons of people, is really simple. Running under Lion or Mountain Lion, as well as in Windows, I always turn off the "tap to click" feature. Some people use it; I don't because I accidentally tap all the time when I'm working. So, it's great that you have the option to turn that off. So far, so good.
Now, if I want to click and drag, it's simple: I just click by holding down the trackpad, physically clicking it with my index finger, and then I drag with my middle finger. Again, great! Works beautifully.
HOWEVER, in Windows/Boot Camp this doesn't work reliably. The very same gesture doesn't function, because often it's interpreted as a right click. If I very slowly and carefully move all my fingers away from the trackpad, click carefully, hold, and then start to gingerly drag, it works ok. But any normal-speed motion is misinterpreted as right-click.
I use right-click (by holding down 2 fingers) all the time -- it's an essential part of operating in Windows. So I'm used to making that work. It's strange that it activates by accident all the time during a drag operation.
Simple fix: just implement whatever algorithm you use in Lion. It works fine. Don't go into right-click mode when I'm trying to do a simple click-drag.
Let me know if you need help writing the drivers, but I'm sure you should be able to ask an intern to add the necessary line of code or two to fix it yourselves, if you can make it a priority.

NOTE on #1: this is based on a Windows 8.1 setting. By default, there is a delay so that you don't accidentally hit the touchpad while typing (I think this is the reason why). Go into PC Settings and you can change the sensitivity on this or just turn it off.
Are you talking about the options at the button of Mouse and Touchpad settings that has a drop-down for: No delay (always on), Short delay, Medium delay, Long delay and Turn off taps?
I tested all 5 out and didn't notice any difference in the cursor delay. I tested it by slowly moving my finger on the Touchpad until the cursor responds. The slower I move my finger the longer it takes to respond.

I get these VM crashes which I can't figure out, can anyone provide information which can help me resolve this.

Try using -XnoOpt parameter. This option turns off adaptive optimization. While optimized code generally runs faster than code that hasn’t been optimized, occasionally, the time required to optimize code results in undesirable delays processing. -XnoOpt lets you avoid these delays by turning off optimization. This option is also helpful when you suspect that a JVM or application problem, such as a system crash or poor startup performance, might be related to optimization. You can turn optimization off and retry your application. If it then runs successfully, you can safely assume that the problem lies with code optimization

Spacebar handtool disabled by windows 8.1 update

Hi,
The spacebar hand tool no longer works after windows 8.1 update, the hand shows but I cannot pan, a little research leads me to believe this is a problem with the touchpad disabling certain gestures when spacebar is pressed to avoid the cursor jumping about etc. I cant do anything in the control pannel for the touchpad. Is there a work around? I know I'm not the only person with this problem.
It's not the old problem of chrome/firefox running in the background this is new with the 8.1 update.
It's driving me crackers! (I'm running windows 8.1 on an asus...unfortunately)

Thanks, that worked but I'll describe be it in idiot proof steps for thicko's like me,
Move cursor to bottom right hand corner, control panel power options etc will appear,
Go up to search at the top,
Type in 'settings' (you don't need the speech marks) hit enter
Click PC settings,
Click mouse and touchpad
In the drop down menu "delay" disable/turn it off.
Your spacebar hand tool will now work again.

Applying effects to a small section of a track in Multi-track view, not recordin automation properly

Hello there!
Recording Automation of effects is not working properly.
In Mulitrack view, I'd like to apply effects sparingly to small sections of a particular track.
I have tried the different modes (Read, Latch, Touch, and Write).
All I'm trying to do is make the delay effect turn off completely for most of the track, but come in precisely on certain words within that track to provide a delay or echo effect on specific words, but not the entire vocal track.
Audition records the turning on and off of the effects, just not at all the way I programmed it.
Audition turns on the effects about 1 or 2 seconds after I told it to, so obviously it does not effect the words I want it to.
When I'm recording the automation I get it just right, but when I play it back, it does not effect the spots where I turned it on, it doesn't turn on the effects until a second or so after I had told it to !
I've tried everything, I did go into preferences and select "multitrack" and changed the "automation optimizations" to try to make it work, but to no avail, I changed the automatch time from 1 second to 0 seconds, then up to 5 seconds...admittedly I don't understand these "automation optimizations" but I tried all types of different settings.
All I want to do is to precisely automate the turning on and off of effects, for about 1 second at a time, to apply some delay to certain words withing th vocal track.
Now I know I can go to edit view and go through the entire track highlighting different words and applying the effects to them, but shouldn't I be able to do that non-destructively in Multi-track view through the use of Automation?
IF I must go through the entire track highlighting each word to apply delay to, then what is the best way: to first save another copy of that file so if I don't like the destructive edits the next day I can go back and restore the original file?.....What would be the best way to do this and wouldn't this way use much more space on the harddrive, wouldn't I have to duplicate entire vocal tracks and save them under a different name? What is the best way to do a workaround if I can't get automation to work correctly?
It would be great if someone could guide me through the easiest way of doing this, or better yet just tell me all the ways of accomplishing what I'm trying to do.

Thanks for your response Steve, I didn't explain things thoroughly enough which is why you thought I hadn't tried the automation twirl down that shows the automation lanes, yes I do know about that and did try it, let me try to explain properly:
I did try it with the automation lanes before posting here and it worked with the volume and pan etc... BUT, with the delay they only let you automate one of the delay parameters at a time, SO, for instance, I can ONLY automate one of the following parameters at a time relating to delay: "wet" or "dry" or "delay" or "feedback" or "trash" or "spread" or "distortion mode"
ALL I want to do is turn the entire effect ON for 1 or 2 seconds (using the exact delay settings I already set), and then have it turn OFF until a few bars later, when, again, I would like to apply the delay effect to another individual word or two and so on...But there seems to be no option to simply turn the entire effect on or off for certain segments of a track using the automation lane (unless perhaps I create 7 automation lanes for all the parameters)...but maybe I'm missing something...
SO, what I was doing was setting the automation to record changes during playback, then I was toggling the efx "on/off" button or "power" button (the one that turns green when on) and I was clicking that on or off for each word to record that into the automation.
It worked, it does turn the efx on and off, just not at all as I did it during the recording, there is a discrepancy between when I applied it during the automation recording process and when it turns off and on during playback...it's way late, but it does turn it off and on completely, just not in the same sequence which I intened it to record.
It would have been absoltely beautiful if it just played back the on and off toggles back as I had played it, I don't understand why it's late in doing so...

sidenote: let me know if you understand what I did, I'm not even sure if this was intented to be a function of audition, but really it almost worked...and if I guess and turn it on about a second before I want the effect to turn on (when recording the automation) then I can get it to land right on some words, if I do it just right, but too hard to guess and anticipate perfectly every instance I should apply the effect early during the automation recording process so I and I never get it to hit every word.
it seems it should just record it as i performed it, maybe there is some setting I am missing...any thoughts on this particular method?

I've just installed Sound Blaster X-fi Music Exstreem, and I'm very pleased with the performance.
Now I would like to make some music of my own using my Electric guitar, amplified through the line in. Everything sounds fine in the Audio Creation mode.
I would like to make real time recording using FL Studio 5. In the mixer state, I unfortunaly can't choose any "in source". It just shows "in:none", and I'm not getting any audio signal. What's wrong?
I'm new at this, so I would be very greatful, if any body out there can help me.

You should even be able to set latency into 2 ms or 4 ms, and still get good quality signal (I can, with Audigy 2) if you do not have VSTi/DXi or "VST/DX -effects" loaded in guitar track(s) in FL (I have it normally set to 5 to 7 ms even with some effects/processors in use).
Can you try if delay is there when using some standalone guitar processor/rig

Are you using Creative ASIO driver (there is also a "ASIO Multimedia" driver available too which is the worst one made when used with Creative cards)?
How powerful PC do you have (affects to quality on lower latencies)?
Are there some delay -effects turned "ON" on EAX panel.
Which resolution your audiodriver is set? Try if seting it to 6-bit/44. kHz or 6-bit/48 kHz makes any improvements (I do not know what settings your card have --> maybe only 6-bit/48 kHz mode is available with ASIO like older Creative cards do have).
If you can't get latency down without sound quality gets poor, you can also try if Asio4All works better with X-Fi card.

Will the Apple TV do these things?

I presently use WD TV Live boxes. They work, but I'm dissatisfied with some of the non-critical functionality, and especially with the level of support from WD. I'm considering replacing my WD boxes with Apple TVs, but I'm not sure if they support some of the features I'm interested in. Since I don't want to buy one just to find out if it works, I was hoping to find some answers here!
I keep all my video files on standard Windows network shares, with no media server software. I understand that I'll need to install iTunes to stream my video, which is no problem. I operate over a wired network. There are some of my criteria I understand Apple TV does meet, so I'm just going to state them in case there are any caveats that anyone wants to mention:
Physically small, quiet, no fan.
Streams HD video over a wired network to my TV via HDMI.
Supports a wide variety of video and audio codecs.
Youtube support
Netflix support
As for my actual questions:
One problem with the WD TV boxes is that there is a long delay between turn-on and actual usability. How long does an Apple TV typically take from cold boot to playing video?
Another problem is that video files on servers are buried in the menu structure, ten or more selections down. There's no way to create shortcuts at a higher level. And scrolling through lists of videos is a pain. How does the Apple TV interface for accessing locally streamed video compare?
Does the Apple TV support playlists, with shuffle? I'd love to have a playlist of, say, all my sitcoms, and have the device pick one at random.
If I have multiple Apple TVs on the same network, can I stop watching a video file on one box and pick it up where I left off on the other?
I understand Apple AirPlay will allow me to stream the same audio, in sync, to be played by multiple Apple TVs and/or AirPort Express nodes simultaneously. Is this accurate?

The Apple TV takes only a few seconds to start up and be ready to play video.
You can add items to a favourites list, however content lists are fairly basic, although they may not be quite as deep as you've described on the WD.
Yes the Apple TV supports playlists with shuffle.
iTunes remembers where a video has been stopped and will give you the option on any other Apple TV to resume it at that point or start again.
You can stream audio to multiple Apple TVs and airport expresses from your computer, note though you can only stream video to one device at a time.
On the subject of audio and video codecs that are supported by the Apple TV you may find the following specifications of interest.
