Delay occurs when switching between applications

System worked fine before installing Mavericks.  Now each time I switch been applications there is a 5-10 sec delay before the new application responds.  The applications don't actually hang, the system does catch up, but it makes the system unusable.
For example, I wil have Outlook 2011 up on one monitor and Safari up on another monitor and each application will work fine and be responsive.  But when I click between the two open applications, 5-10 sec delay occurs.  During the delay, the first application continues to be responsive (will respond to mouse clicks, can type, can close, can move/resize, etc.) but the second application (the one that I'm clicking to) won't respond to anything. Evenuntaly, the system catches up and the second application becomes responsive, but the same thing occurs when switching back to the original application.
So far, it seems to impact all applications - Office 2011, evernote, safari, webex, adobe reader, system perferences, and finder.
Verified Disk Permissions and vefied disk - no improvement.
Rebooted the system - no improvement.
Ensured spotlight indexing wasn't running.
Any suggestions?

Apple was able to help fix this.  From what I understood, they had me delete the Apple settings files and then the operating system would recreate them - sorry, didn't note the specific directories they said to delete.  They said it was an issue caused by installing the new OS.  Deleting the files fixed the issue.

  • Flash CS3: Serious lag when Switching between Applications

    I've got a serious problem with Flash CS 3 on my Macbook Pro,
    which makes it almost unworkable.
    When I'm working in flash, switch to another application
    (Mail, Illustrator, any...) and then switch back to flash. the
    program freezes for at least 9 to 10 seconds: The Menu's are all
    transparant and greyed out, and the only thing I see is the beloved
    "beachball" spinning.
    Needless to say that this makes it very hard to work with the
    program, since switching between apps is a big part of my workflow.
    Is anyone experiencing the same problem?
    I have re-installed the whole CS3 suite (twice) and even
    cleaned up my computer and did a clean install of OS X!!
    I'm running on a 15" mac book pro (2,33) with 2gig memory,
    bought last may.
    Any help is welcome,

    I'm having the same problem as well. I was using Flash 8,
    thought I would upgrade to Flash CS3 and solve the problem but that
    was no good. There's still a long lag time when switching to Flash
    from any other program. Not sure if it's a Memory problem or a Font
    problem. Any word on a solution for this annoying problem?

  • Weird window behavior when switching between applications????

    When I switch between two applications, the other window disappears. This is annoying if I am trying to copy text from say, textedit, to another application like mail or Excel. When I switch to the mail app, the textedit window disappears. And when I switch to textedit, the mail window disappears. I have to keep going to the Dock to get to the other window.
    I did not think this was always the case. Is there a setting I am missing? I really think I was able to see both a textedit window AND an Excel or Mail window at the same time. Please help

    Do you have any third-party extensions installed? I googled and found several that will perform this auto-hide action: Quitling, App Presto, AutoHide, and DragThing are some of them.

  • Line across screen when switching between applications?

    2011 21.5" iMac OS X Mavericks (10.9)
    AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512
    Since upgrading to Mavericks I have noticed a line across the screen during the genie effect when you open, close or minimize applications. The line is most noticable when minimizing an application which is on top of my wallpaper. The wallpaper is the default Mavericks image.
    The line does not appear when scrolling or sliding back through pages in safari etc. The above is the only thing that will trigger the issue.
    Is anyone else experiencing this or have a solution for it?

  • HT5891 When switching between applications on different displays, Microsoft Word (or Excel) "steals focus" and becomes the active window.

    In Mission Control, Displays have separate Spaces is checked. This happens regardlesss of whether I'm switching using Command+Tab or a mouse.  Any suggestions?

    There is a workaround for this problem, which was posted by Highestwater on the Microsoft Community thread for this bug and worked for me as well:
    Go to
    System Preferences > Mission Control >
    and UN-check the box labeled "Displays have separate Spaces" (see image below)
    The original poster on this thread may already be aware of this workaround, because he/she mentioned that the "separate Spaces" option is checked. But if you can live without the extra Mavericks dual display features (like going full screen in 1 display only, switching spaces independently on each display, and having a menu bar on each display), then uncheck this option and the "stealing focus" bug seems to disappear. For me the bug is so annoying that it's worth it to lose the extra features. Just yesterday I closed a Word document I was working on by mistake because I clicked on a Finder window on my other display and immediately pressed command-w to close it, without realizing that the focus had switched to my word document which closed instead. It was saved, but this sort of stuff interrupted my work enough to be both an annoyance and a time drain.

  • IE7 freezes when switching between applications

    I have 2 production applications. If I open one of them and subsequently open the other one all is fine... The tab for the original app (at the bottom left of workspace) is replaced by the newly opened app (after the pop-up saying 'loading application' is displayed momentarily), as usual. However, if I then try to open the 1st application again the pop-up saying 'loading application' never goes away. At this time I am unable to select any other option except to close IE7 and re-open.
    I would like to know if this is a workspace bug or an IE7 settings issue.

    We've had conflicts with IE7, and IT eventually rolled us back to 6 to resolve. Not a formal indictment, but call this one vote for an IE7 issue.

  • Trouble switching between applications

    When switching between applications I have a weird problem. Intermittently the menubar for the app I'm switching from will stay but the windows for the app I'm switching to will appear like they should. Most of the only way to fix this is to kill the apps.
    Any thoughts?

    No Not using any tricky keys to switch. Applications just "lock up" like the old days. After switching apps, can't get back to an app. It is locked up in a process that ultimately results in an entire hard reset. Any one else have this happen on an iMac 2.4 intel core 2 running 10.5.2? Really weird slow behavior lately as well. Maybe there are some prefs I could dump..
    tried the disc utility thing a few times. Fonts seem to create havok so I often disable those as well.

  • Forced to Close all open applications when switching between users.

    I recently purchased a MacBook Pro 13 inch, and have 2 accounts set up on the computer.
    When switching between users on the computer, I am always forced to close all open applications on the current user, in order to switch to another user.
    I was wondering if there was ANY way to keep the pages (specifically Safari) open when switching to another user, so that I can go back to them when I log back in to the other account.
    thanks for the help!

  • HT6114 Delaying problem when switching desktop

    After upgrading to Mavericks v10.9.2 Update my "Macbook pro Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013" is delaying when switching desktops or switching to mission control. An overall delay problems occured. I need help!

    First off, I meant to title this "When switching spaces application window is not showing."
    Just in case anyone else runs into this problem or any other weirdness with switching between spaces, the answer seems to be trashing the com.apple.dock.plist file and then restarting the dock. The preferences file can evidentially get corrupted and create some problems. Spaces does not have it's own plist file but stores it's data in the dock's plist file. Be warned that this will reset all of your dock preferences including which apps you have on the dock.

  • Dreamweaver 6.1 - JavaScript error when switching between open tabs

    When switching between open tabs a sequence of javascript
    errors occurs. I had not used Dreamweaver for about 2 weeks, and
    last time I used it with no problems.
    I have tried uninstalling it, OKing removal of all files when
    asked, re-installing it and updating with dwmx61_updater.exe, but I
    still get the same errors.
    This has rendered the software virtually unuseable, so any
    help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm working to a
    rapidly-approaching deadline.
    "While executing Browse_Back enabled in toolbars.xml, a
    JavaScript error occurred"
    followed by
    "While executing Browse_Forward enabled in toolbars.xml, a
    JavaScript error occurred"
    followed by
    "While executing Browse_Stop enabled in toolbars.xml, a
    JavaScript error occurred"
    The relevant code seems to be :
    <!-- Browser nav toolbar -->
    <toolbar id="Browser_Toolbar" platform="win"
    label="Browser Navigation" container="document"
    initiallyVisible="false">
    <button id="Browse_Back"
    image="Toolbars/images/MM/back.gif"
    disabledImage="Toolbars/images/MM/back_dis.gif"
    tooltip="Back"
    label="Back"
    enabled="dw.getDocumentDOM().browser.isCmdEnabled('back')"
    command="dw.getDocumentDOM().browser.backPage()"
    update="onEveryIdle"/>
    <button id="Browse_Forward"
    image="Toolbars/images/MM/forward.gif"
    disabledImage="Toolbars/images/MM/forward_dis.gif"
    tooltip="Forward"
    label="Forward"
    enabled="dw.getDocumentDOM().browser.isCmdEnabled('forward')"
    command="dw.getDocumentDOM().browser.forwardPage()"
    update="onEveryIdle"/>
    <button id="Browse_Stop"
    image="Toolbars/images/MM/stop.gif"
    disabledImage="Toolbars/images/MM/stop_dis.gif"
    tooltip="Stop"
    label="Stop"
    enabled="dw.getDocumentDOM().browser.getPageBusy()"
    command="dw.getDocumentDOM().browser.stopPage()"
    update="onBrowserPageBusyChange"/>
    <button id="Browse_Refresh"
    image="Toolbars/images/MM/browserRefresh.gif"
    tooltip="Refresh"
    label="Refresh"
    enabled="true"
    command="dw.getDocumentDOM().browser.refreshPage()"/>
    presumably the next error is caused by the previous ones
    failing :
    "While executing getCurrentValue in AddressURL.htm, a
    JavaScript error occurred"
    the relevan tcode :
    function getCurrentValue()
    var dom = dw.getDocumentDOM();
    var value = dom.browser.getURL();
    if (value && value.length)
    //check if is it not a temp file
    //extract the tail of the url
    var filename = value;
    var slashIndex = filename.lastIndexOf("/");
    filename = filename.substring(slashIndex+1);
    var tempIndex = filename.indexOf("TMP");
    if (tempIndex != 0)
    addRecentAddress(value);
    return value;

    You can try this simple fix -
    Quit DW.
    Find this folder -
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
    Data\Macromedia\Dreamweaver
    8\Configuration\WinFileCache-*.dat
    (these folders are normally hidden - you may have to use
    Explorer > Tools >
    Folder Options to unhide them)
    and delete it.
    Restart DW. Works better?

  • Getting around commiting at task to hardware in DAQmx and maintaining HW timing when switching between two AI tasks.

    I have a project that requires two HW timed AI task that are triggered at different rising edges. I originally started with an example vi that has HW timed retriggerable AI that seemed to working fine until I decided to capture two channel with a seperate task. I received error messages due to the orginal task being committed to the hardware that prevented the second task for being configured due to reserved resources.
    I was able to changed the commit to verify and switched from a analog edge trigger to a digital edge so I could use another PFI for triggering the second acquisition and the program seems to work fine at the momment.
    Questions that I have are:
    What exactly do verify, reseve and commit refer to in regards to task setup and impact on task switching delay. What information is actually transfered when configuring the task and what are the typical delay times for switching between tasks for the task controls listed above on a PCI6071e card. I am concerned that HW timing may have been sacrificed in order to work around the reserved resources and that if someone bumps the mouse the timing sequence will miss a trigger due to an IRQ.
    Any information on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
    Kindest Regards,
    Bill

    Lon,
    Thanks for  the reply. I have another related question in regards to configuring the read property node for a digitally triggered start-stop routine with 2 presamples and collecting 5 samples per channel on 14 channels. Triggering occurs at 500 Hz and the total sampling time for all channels is restricted to 500 us max. I am current dealing with a single AI task and having difficulty capturing all the data in an output file. I have tried using a large array to store the data until the test is complete then write the array to a file to see if the file I/O was the problem. It did not work.
    I have looked the the vi and information with respect to "How do I use digital triggering to start and stop AI". The description included with the vi indicates that the read property "Relative to" must be set to current read position and the buffer definition modified to something hugh in order to keep the ahead of the write. I have tried this and cannot seem to capture the correct number of bytes in the output file. I have tried different "Relative to" settings and offsets with no luck.
    A quick summary of the test is 1000 cycles with 5 samples per channel on 14 channel captured twice during each cycle. Data read as I16 (2bytes). Neglecting the 300-500 bytes in the test comment header,  the file should be in the 112k range (1000*5*14*2*2). When I do happen to collect some data the file size is either way too small or much larger than expected.
    All this information to ask the simple question; How do I configure the read properties to make certain that I collect all the data and store it in a file.
    I apologize for running on about this problem, but I am getting really frustrated with this.
    Kindest Regards,
    Bill

  • Disable the sliding animation that occurs when switching desktops via command → or ← in Mountain Lion

    I would like to disable the sliding animation that occurs when switching desktops via command → or ← in Mountain Lion. It gives me motion sickness!

  • When switching spaces application menu is not showing

    I'm not sure the is a Snow Leopard specific problem, but I have certain applications assigned to certain spaces. When I switch to a space for that application and it has an open document, everything is fine. But if I close all of the document windows for the application and then switch away from that space and then back to that space, the Finder menu takes over. The application is still running, but I have to either click it's icon in the dock or cmd-tab to the application to get it's menu or toolbars to appear.
    Is this normal behavior? It's kind of a pain to mak sure that I at least have one open document window so that when I switch back to that space I don't have to "reactivate" the app. Just so I make sure i'm explaining this correctly...
    I have Photoshop in it's own space and then open the program and then don't open a document window and then switch to another space and then switch back to the Photoshop space, I now have the Finder's menu displayed and a blank desktop showing. I then have to click on the Photoshop icon or cmd-tab to the running application to get it's menus and toolbars to show.
    Thanks for your help.

    Can you please try clearning the Contribute preferences?
    To Clear the preference, quit Contribute, and then delete the Contribute CS3 folder in C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\ and also run the following command " reg delete "HKCU\Software\Adobe\Contribute 4.1" /f " if you are using Contribute CS3. Reconnect to the site and try the same scenario.
    Note that, if you clear the preferences then no connection will be listed in Contribute, you need to recreate the connections. It will be like a fresh installation.
