Delayed Connection to Internet using Time Capsule on a network

I have a Time Capsule connected to a Verizon Actiontec DSL modem/router.  It is connected in bridge mode.
The problem I am having is that when I first access the internet it takes a long time, then after the first page loads all the subsequent pages load fast and well.  It is almost like there some connection issue at the beginning that the software eventually corrects.
Also, when I bring up the Airport Utility, if often shows at first the Internet as "amber" and "disconnected" while the Time capsule is green.  But I know if I access the DSL/modem at 192.168.1.1 it always shows it is connected.
Has anyone heard of such an issue before, and how it can be corrected?
Thank you.

what version is your TC?? A1xxx from the base and firmware revision.
Or just post the picture from airport utility. You can pick up the model from the full summary page.. hold down the option key and double click the icon of the TC in airport utility.
The later firmware on Gen1-4 is less than robust.. downgrade to 7.6.1
The 7.7.3 firmware on the Gen5 is also issue prone but more the hardware can have issues.. if the actiontec modem has ethernet ports set to auto the TC may not negotiate correctly.. Try and set it to 100mbit full duplex .. if that is not possible use a crossover cable or a small 10/100 switch between the TC and the modem.
I have a Time Capsule connected to a Verizon Actiontec DSL modem/router.  It is connected in bridge mode.
Is "It" the TC or the Verizon as it is unclear exactly which you are bridging.. I am guessing the TC.

  • Unable to connect to internet using time capsule

Over the last couple of days I have run into a peculiar problem. I am able to connect to the internet when I connect the ethernet cable directly to my computer. Now when I use time capsule to connect wirelessly, the connection either does not get established or if it gets established fails after a few mins and I am unable to browse the internet. I have noticed this problem especially after Mac OSX 10.6.3 update. I did not have this issue earlier. I am not sure if this is the root cause but would surely like some help.

This behavior may indicate that you are picking up wireless interference from cordless phones, another wireless network, security system or other electrical device. It's hard to pinpoint the exact cause.
Suggest that you start by downloading iStumbler and using the application to display your signal strength and noise on your network. What values do you see for each of these?
Also look at any other networks to see if they might be using the same channel or an adjacent channel as your wireless network. If so, change the channel on your wireless network so that it is as far away as possible from other networks.
If you have cordless phones, turn them all off for at least an hour when you can to see if your network performance improves.
Interference robustness often does more harm than good. Try turning it off. However, if you find that your network performs better with it on, that is an almost sure sign that wireless interference is occurring on your network.
You won't be able to do anything about cordless phones at your neighbors (my neighbor...across the street...can knock me off my wireless network if he is in his front yard with his phone and it rings). Users far underestimate the effect that cordless phones have on their wireless networks.
Post back with your findings when you have tried a few things.

  • I can't connect to internet using Time Capsule router.

My hard drive recently died. I took the iMac to the Apple store and had a 500 GB hard drive installed. I disconnected my Time Capsule so the Apple rep could restore my data. Now when I try to reconnect to the internet via Time Capsule router, it won't connect. The cable modem is fine, and the Time Capsule's status seems OK with the green light. It even seems to be backing up OK. I don't think I did anything differently, other than unplug it in order to have the Apple rep restore my data. Any thoughts out there?

It sounds like the cable company neglected to mention to you that you must completely reset the modem whenever you change the device that it is connected to. That's because the modem "associates" with a device and "remembers" the settings.
If you then change devices, the modem will "look" for the old device that was connected to it and it will of course not "find" it, so it won't connect.
That's why you need to do the complete sequence that I provided.
If you still cannot connect after the complete reset, then you may have a defective modem. I'm not trying to pick on the cable company....and yours may be an exception...but the last time my modem was having problems, the provider kept insisting that "everything looks good". But, they always say that.
I turned the modem off and called them back an hour later and they still said "everything looks good".
An Ethernet cable has a slightly wider plug than a phone cable. If that's the only connector on the modem, then it must be the right one. Ethernet cables do fail. You might want to check your cable, just in case.

  • DirecTV DVR HR20 connect to internet via Time Capsule

    Hi Everyone,
I've searched and come across various topics about connecting the DirecTV DVR to the internet via Time Capsule, but none of them seem to provide a solution for wireless connectivity.
Can anyone point me to a topic where it describes the steps and any issues related to getting my DirecTV DVR connected to the internet via the Time Capsule wirelessly.
I have gone through the setup and I get connected to my network, but I get the error when it tries to connect to the internet.
Do I have to do any port forwarding or anything special?
I use to have my Netgear supporting this configuration, just purchased the Time Capsule and now I cannot get my DVR connected.
    Thanks for the support
    Jeff...

The Direct TV DVR has an Ethernet connection on the back, which is strongly recommended if you intend to download movies or any kind of high definition material.
If you are trying to use the new Whole Home feature, wireless is not supported by Direct TV for this service.
If you are trying to connect to the DVR using wireless from the Time Capsule, you must be using some sort of wireless to Ethernet bridge device.
What device are you trying to use?
Have you verified that this device is compatible with the Time Capsule?
As a test, connect the adapter/bridge to your laptop and turn the wireless off on the laptop. Open your browser to see if you can get an Internet connection.
If you can, you know the network connection is good and the focus shifts to the DVR as the source of the problem.
If you can't, we'll need to figure out if the adapter you are using will work the Time Capsule.

  • Connecting Cable Internet to Time Capsule

I know this is dumb, but I'm tired! I'm trying to set up Time Capsule using my cable internet. Time Capsule obviously does not have a coaxial cable port, so how do I actually get my internet feed into the Time Capsule? Do I need to keep using the router provided by Comcast and only use Time Capsule as a wireless backup? Thanks!

    sweetsweetjane wrote:

You don't need to keep Comcast's router, but you do need something that can operate as a cable modem.  Depending on the exact details of your Comcast service, something like this device.
If you don't want to go that route, you should put either the Comcast router or the Time Capsule into "bridge mode".  You're better off not having two devices both acting as a router.

  • Using Time Capsule with existing network?

    I am planning on purchasing a Time Capsule, but would like to know if it's right for me before I buy it. Can someone please answer these questions I have about it;
What security do I have available on the Time Capsule to stop other people on the network accessing my backup, any attached devices and the settings of the Time Capsule?
If I plugged my Time Capsule into a network switch (switch is connected to the main router), will I then be able to attach ethernet devices to the Time Capsule without any speed loss for those devices?
I already have wifi but I would like to set up the Time Capsule with a different name and password (and leave the current wifi alone). If someone connected to the Time Capsule, can they access the devices which are connected to the original wifi, and the ones connected to the main router by ethernet?
Can I easily create a partition on my Time Capsule, so I can have 100GB of space available for copying/sharing files directly and then the rest for Time Machine backups?
Can iOS access the files or back up to the Time Capsule?
If I connected a printer to the Time Capsule, can iOS devices use it to print?
I know there's a lot of questions, but I'd appreciate any help with any of the questions.
    Thanks.

What security do I have available on the Time Capsule to stop other people on the network accessing my backup, any attached devices and the settings of the Time Capsule?
There is a device password that will be required of any user who wants to access the Time Capsule disk. If the Time Capsule is also configured to provide a wireless network, users will need to enter the wireless network password to be able to connect to the network.
If I plugged my Time Capsule into a network switch (switch is connected to the main router), will I then be able to attach ethernet devices to the Time Capsule without any speed loss for those devices?
In this case, the Time Capsue would be configured to operate in Bridge Mode. It functions as another Ethernet switch in that type of setup. Speed should not be affected.
I already have wifi but I would like to set up the Time Capsule with a different name and password (and leave the current wifi alone). If someone connected to the Time Capsule, can they access the devices which are connected to the original wifi, and the ones connected to the main router by ethernet?
Yes, since the Time Capsule will be in Bridge Mode, devices that connect through the wireless on the Time Capsule will be on the same network as your main router...users connecting through the wireless on the Time Capsule and will be able to "see" other network devices.
Can I easily create a partition on my Time Capsule, so I can have 100GB of space available for copying/sharing files directly and then the rest for Time Machine backups?
No. In order to partition the Time Capsule drive, it would need to be removed from the Time Capsule case, placed in a separate caddy or enclosure and then connected directly to your Mac to allow Disk Utility access to the disk for the partition procedure.  Then, you would have to reinstall the Time Capsule drive back in the Time Capsule case.
In addition to a lot of work, this will void the warranty on the product.
Can iOS access the files or back up to the Time Capsule?
iOS devices back up to iTunes on your computer. Then, when a Mac backs up to the Time Capsule using Time Machine, all of the data is backed up. In other words, iOS devices cannot back up directly to the Time Capsule drive using Time Machine.
Using an App like Filebrowser, it is possible to have the iOS device browse the contents of the Time Capsule drive, but the iOS device will not be able to open files that have  been backed up using Time Machine.
The iOS device will likely open most other normal files stored on the Time Capsule drive if the proper App is installed on the iOS device.
If I connected a printer to the Time Capsule, can iOS devices use it to print?
Yes if the printer is AirPrint compatible. Check this Apple support document to see if your printer is on the list of compatible devices.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
Otherwise, you can add an App like Print Central to the iOS device to possibly allow printing from the iOS devices.

  • Cable modem connection to the internet using Time Capsule

I have just moved to Indonesia and my ISP has provided a cable modem. I can connect to the internet if I plug the ethernet cable into the MAC directly but if I try to use my time capsule I cannot get a connection to the internet.

You will need to completely reset the modem.....and if that does not work.....reset the modem and reconfigure your Time Capsule.
Push the reset button on the modem (if present, it is usually on the back)
Power down the modem by pulling the power plug or wall plug
Remove the battery from the modem (if easily accessible)
Power down all other devices on your network...order is not important
Wait at least 30 minutes. A hour would be better and longer will not hurt.
Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port (circle icon) on the Time Capsule
Re-install the battery if you pulled it in the step above
Power up the modem and let it run for at least 5 minutes by itself
Power up the Time Capsule the same way
Power up each other device one at a time a few minutes apart
    Check for proper operation

  • Slow internet using Time Capsule

    Hi!
I have a Time Capsule and are experiencing problems with the WiFi speed. There's nothing wrong with my internet connection because when i plug in the internet caple straight into the computer I get great speed all the time.
The Time Capsule is placed about 10 cm from my new iMac so I guess there's gotta be something wrong with my frequency or channel. I've scanned my network and I've tried to use channels that are free from other WiFis but it still doesn't help. I can have 100 mbit speed in one second and then the next i can barely browse a web page.
I've also tried changing the radio mode but I don't know which one to choose. Right now I'm trying 802.11a/n-802.11b/g
    Any suggestions?

I have the same mountain lion 10.8.5 and I found that my time capsule was going all the time, It took so long for it to backup, it was making me unable to get speed from my wifi connection, since when one backup competed a new backup started. I was buffering trough movies and have 50+ Mbits of Internet download speed.
I posted this reply after talking to apple 6 times on the 'time capsule slow' on another board:
I had the same problem with slow backups. Called Apple 5 times and went through all the hoops checking plists, airport, and then erasing using my airport utility and the first backup of about 25-30 gigs went fine, but the second backup would take between 1-2 hours. By the time it was finished it was ready to do another backup.
After looking at community fixes I found that my Comcast Norton Anti Virus was the problem. Upon speaking for the 6th time to Apple I was told that should have been the first thing they asked, since antivirus programs check each file going to the time capsule. Even unchecking the scan external drives did not help.
I removed the Norton AV from my system and replaced it with the IAV from apple store (free) and my backups are back to normal. I timed a 100 meg using Ethernet/LAN and it took 9 minutes 32 seconds from clicking backup now, searching for backups, preparing backup, backingup, and cleanup. My Wifi connection on 10 megs took only 1 minute 29 seconds.
Now my backups run so fast I don't even see them working. Also the constant updates to Norton were casuing my backups to be 100 megs or more each time due to daily Norton updates. Now I get backups in the order of 10-20 megs - depending up what I have put on the machine. If I put music on it increases the size of the files installed.
I recommend anyone having this slow wifi or slow time capsule problems to turn off your full antivirus program no matter what you are using and watch the difference in speed. I am so happy! No more 2 hour backups and 45 minutes to 1 hour preparing backup! good luck

  • How to connect over internet to time capsule from iphone?

I want to connect to my time capsule 2013 over the internet with an iphone 5, my time capsule is now set in bridge mode and main router is an airport express. How to set to connect in this case and what is a global hostname? In the past i have time capsule as primary router and it was ok to access with file browser, but now i can't connect only in the local wi-fi. Sorry about bad english.

You will have multiple issues here.
It would be much better for the TC to be the main router. Do you have to use express as the main router?? It is underpowered and does not even have disk access.
Remote access is also super difficult from an iphone.. it is not a Mac.. apple designed remote access for Macs.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3413
    You can use filebrowser method.
    http://www.stratospherix.com/support/gsw_timecapsule.php?page=6remote
Only you need to use the LAN IP of the TC instead of the LAN IP of the express.
Global domain name.. might still work or might not.. apple is working hard to avoid it..
The best option is to buy a static IP from your ISP. That simplifies this whole setup.
Another option not listed is to replace the Express with a proper vpn router. iphone has vpn client built in.. but apple did not include a vpn in their routers. VPN is a lot safer and standard routers use standard dyndns.

  • Mac connects but PC won't connect to internet via TIme Capsule wireless net

I have my personal Mac and work PC at home. I'm switching from a wireless network using my airport extreme base station to a new time capsule. Had no problems earlier, but now with my new wireless network I have the following problem:
    - Both Mac and PC are able to connect to my home wireless network created through Time Capsule
    - Only Mac can access the internet via the Time Capsule wireless network
    - PC connects fine to the wireless network, but the settings indicate the internet cannot be accessed
I've tried fiddling with configurations etc. but cannot seem to get the PC to connect through to the internet using my Time Capsule.
The PC will connect directly to the net if I plug in the ethernet from my cable modem....What's the problem? Any ideas?

Welcome to the discussions forum AZR-DC.
The PC will connect directly to the net if I plug in the ethernet from my cable modem...
Make it a habit to power down your modem whenever you connect something different to it. Merely detaching the AEBS and attaching your Time Capsule or your computer directly will confuse most modems, so leave it powered down for a few moments. Power down your other equipment while you're at it.
Then, power up all the equipment as follows:
Modem... wait a few moments for it to complete its startup sequence.
Time Capsule. Wait a few moments again.
    Computers.
Be sure your PC and your Mac are getting their addresses "via DHCP".

  • Vista laptop can't connect to Internet via Time Capsule

I just setup my brand new 1TB Time Capsule and everything works perfectly with my iMac. Backups work and I can connect to the Internet fine. I'm using the TC as my network router, so everything will connect through the TC. My one-year old Compaq Vista laptop can connect to the Internet if the wireless security is turned off, but once I turn it on..no Internet for the laptop. It can connect and see the network, but can't get to the Internet. I've reset the TC several times trying various setting combinations and I've went through the laptop and tried to update Windows and any drivers that I thought might help, but nothing.
I have the following Wireless settings on the TIme Capsule:
    - radio mode set to Auto
    - radio channel selection set to Auto
    - wireless security set to WPA/WPA2 Personal
Am I missing something? I can't figure if this is a settings issue, laptop issue, or a Time Capsule issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 cannot see Time Capsule drive

This might be your security settings. Open the Local Security Policy utility:
    %windir%\system32\secpol.msc /s
Navigate to Local Policies folder, Security Options view. Find “Network security: LAN Manager authentication level”. If it is set to “Send NTLMv2 response only” change it to “Send LM & NTLM – use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”.
ONE PROBLEM THOUGH. I believe ONLY PROFESSIONAL versions of windows have the local policies acceptable.

  • Windows XP won't connect to Internet via Time Capsule AE

I've got a MacBook Pro and MacBook using Airport Extreme via Time Capsule. I recently partitioned MacBook Pro and added Windows XP via Boot Camp. The XP sees the Airport but cannot connect. I've added the same key to XP as used for Mac access, but it still doesn't connect.
Its a WPA2 Personal Key. XP allows WEP, WPA, and WPA-??? (there are three other letters there that are NOT "2" or "Personal"). It allows one of two "types" that are TKIP or AS? (Three letters that I can't remember.) I'm completely lost.
I also tried changing channels, but that's frustrating unless I just change from the PC end. I had been changing them on the Mac, then rebooting to XP to see what happens. (Nothing, so far.)
Has anyone successfully gotten XP on the Wireless?

XP wireless to a Time Capsule works fine. Problem is, as you've found, choosing the right wireless security, then entering the key in the right format.
Because of this problem in mixed OS X / XP networks, I've stuck with WEP. It's less secure, but it works!
I live in a rural area, so wireless security isn't really an issue.
Try reconfiguring your TC to use WEP. Once you've got it working, investigate the other security options.

  • Computers connecting to internet via time capsule are reporting no internet connectivity.  PC is reporting default gateway has changed.  How to I correct this?

Am having trouble with maintaining a stable wireless network via the Time Capsule.  Am running 1 Mac and 3 PC on a Time Capsule wireless in bridge mode connected to a Verizon wireless router.  Verizon wireless is turned off and the Time Capsule seems to be staying connected to the Verizon router.  When any of the connected computerss goes to stanby, they often report the internet is no longer available.  The PCs say the default gateway has changed ans the Mac simply reports the network parameters have changed.  What do I need to do to the Time Capsule to stabilize the wireless network?

It is unlikely that the gateway changes.. but anything is possible.. sorry I am not in the US.. is your service adsl or cable?? What sort of lease time does the public IP have? Some cable companies now rotate then on the hour I noticed.. others on about 3months.. but most it is one day.
Track it yourself.. see what gateway address the TC gets and if it is rotating with the IP.
If your client computers are running Mountain Lion.. the plain fact is, they are not particularly stable.
Wireless is worst.. ethernet tends to be ok.. but for instance Laptops updated to Mountain Lion can be pretty flakey.. with the TC.. and it is the combo that is more the issue. People report improvement with clean install of ML. BUT there is still a bug there that causes the ML to be less than fantastic.
I experience it occasionally even with a dlink wireless router.. after a wake from sleep.. the network will drop out and need to be manually connected back.. I have to admit I expect no better from Mountain Lion. I could load Snow Leopard on it and it would drop once every blue moon.. but I got the laptop with ML so I live with it.. !!

  • Problem accessing internet using time capsule after update to mountain lion

After updating my macbook air to moutain lion i am having some trouble accessing internet.
Evertytime i re-start my mac or airport utility i am able to access internet properly. After sometime when i access some particular sites, internet access goes down and i need to restart time capsule to access internet again.
Even though in airport utility internet is marked as disconnected, time capsule's indicator is still glowing green colour.
I tried deleting the com.apple.timemachine.plist file from /Library/Preferences/, but still no luck.
Is anybody else also facing the same problem? How can i resolve this problem?

Is the time capsule the only router in the network?
Try setting the lease time in the TC to very short value.. 20min or even less, 10min. It will not add signficant network traffic but might keep the Air updated to the TC.
I would also use SMB compatible name for the TC as well as wireless.. ie short, no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.
Set a different name for 5ghz so it cannot swap around.
And lock the wireless channels. Try each channel in turn, to see if any are better.
