Delayed email delivery using mail app in Lion

I'm having issues with delayed email delivery using the mail app in Lion. Specifically I have an IMAP account (AOL) that is working fine on other macs running snow leopard and on both an iPhone and an iPad. I receive an email that shows up on all other devices but does not get delivered on the Macbook Air. Clicking get new messages does not delivery the email, even if other emails have been delivered in the interim. The only way to get the email to show up is to exit Mail and restart it - and then the email shows up, in the correct date/time order and the correct read status (since I had already read it on another device).
This has happened twice now with my AOL account in the past 24 hours (I've only had the new Macbook Air since Monday). It might also be happening on my other IMAP email accounts but I have not noticed it yet. It's intermittant as I've received many other emails correctly and ontime.
Anyone else seeing something similar? I've never seen this with earlier versions of Mac OS X or on devices running iOS.
This is a Macbook Air running Lion 10.7.1. I have 4 IMAP accounts set up. Mail is set to check for email once a minute and I have my IMAP accounts set to use the IDLE command.

I have the same problem, some photos are not loaded completely and partly grey. This occurs only in Mail.app but not in the web interface of the email provider. Did you find a solution, Florian? Does somebody else have a suggestion?
Greetings from Finland

PLEASE help!! I use Outlook for my email and the Mail App Icon that is in my dock, that I know nothing about, was also storing all my emails. So, I tried to delete ONLY the emails in the Mail App but somehow (under Preferences maybe?) I also deleted ALL my OUTLOOK emails in my inbox.  Can someone please please tell me if there is a way to get my Outlook inbox emails back OR EVEN the emails that were in my Mail app - because even tho I never use the Mail app, at least the emails would be there.
When I was trying to delete the emails in my inbox for the Mail app - I followed THESE directions.  It did in fact clear my inbox for the Mail app.  But then I went to log on to my Outlook account and EVERY SINGLE EMAIL was gone.  And not in the Deleted box.  Just gone.  Here are the directions I followed that screwed everything up.  Please help.
Top menu bar, Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors.
Uncheck "Store deleted messages on the server".
At the drop list for "Permanently erase deleted messages when", choose "Quitting Mail".
    Next...
Top menu bar, Mail > Preferences > General.
At "When searching all mailboxes, include results from", uncheck "Trash".
    Select All = command A

    i found out my prob!
    here is what you do.
go to the "system preferences" on your dock.
    click "software updates".
    click "installed software"
if it shows something about a recent update about "EFI UPDATE, FIRMWARE, THUNDERBOLT" or anything like that, exit out of it.
    go to mail.
    click "mail" at the top.
    click "preferences...".
find the account you are having trouble with, once you do, make sure its highlighted, then click the "-" at the bottom of the window (this will only effect that mail account, it will not effect your ical weather or not its synced thought that email account)
hit the "+" (right next to the "-") and add your accout back!
its something with that update that effected mail, i hope this works out for you, if not reply back

  • Printed Text is Small with Mail.app in Lion

Has anyone been able to adjust the font size of the PRINT in Mail while using Lion? I swear I feel stupid, but I can't seem to adjust this all.
I have to print out an email and the text is soooo small. It's like 3pt. Adjusting the message view font in prefs doesn't change a thing, nor does changing the print options like "Scale to Fit", "Rewrap Message to Fit", "Keep the Same Apparent Font Size", etc.
I have the conversation view selected, but I opened a single email as well, and it ALWAYS prints like 3pt making the text unreadable.
I finally had to forward the email to gmail and print from gmail. Sad.
Any ideas on how to adjust the PRINT font size only?

Yes, I tried this as well.
If I increase the scale to let's say 400%, it does increase the font size, but makes the text no longer appdear on one page. It will change the flow of the text so that half a sentence on the right is cut off, and the remaining text is on the next page.
In other words, it doesn't work.
Just in case this helps, I'm printing to a HP 4240n, but I don't think that would be it.
Even saving to a PDF in the print dialog causes the same issue.
Does anyone print emails from Mail.app in Lion? Am I the only one?

  • Cannot send email from the Mail App?

I've had an izymail subscription for 1 year and just renewed it last week. I could never send an email from my Mail App without a window popping up stating "izymail cannot connect to the server" and the sending bar (along the bottom of the screen) just freezes and will not send.
I've a Hotmail account linked up to izymail. Anyone know how to fix this problem?

I fixed my problem - I deleted my email account on my iPhone, then tried to setup a new account. I had a few problems setting it up. It wouldn't recognize the incoming or outgoing servers and I lost my email altogether for a few hours. Then I changed every setting possible and finally figured out that I had 2-3 "Other SMTP Servers" as well as my "Primary Server". Once I deleted the Other SMTP Servers, my email worked and i'm able to send emails now!
I also think changing the "Server Port" number helped solve my problem also, and making sure "Use SSL" was turned off.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Can I reinstall Mail.app on Lion 10.7?

After trying to import my mail from Snow Leopard, my Mail.app in Lion 10.7 has become unresponsive – I can't open a Message Viewer Window, nor can I open preferences to make changes to my accounts.
I'd like to reinstall Mail, but can't find a way to do this. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

    Hello,
I had the same problem this morning. After ugrading to 10.7.4 Mail.app could not import the messages, and hence, never started.
The failure message stated "The import failed. An error occurred during the import. Make sure you have available space in your home folder and try again." There was no other option button but "Quit." So I quited, checked, and confirmed there were 414.19 GB available; and I used Finder and System Report for this purpose. Afterwards I tried again. The failure persisted.
Ironically I wan't able to neither read from Webmail, nor access Mail.app. So I confirmed with the Data Center the server's status. Everything was up and running. Still, they restarted the server for the sake of certainty. The problems persisted.
So I did as suggested here. And it worked smoothly.
Since I use IMAP on my settings I went for a fresh configuration with all my mail accounts. And it worked smoothly.
    Thanks William for the tip.
Thanks Shaun for marking the reply as the solution.

Hi SB. Thanks for your advice. I checked and I am using the recommended settings. I'm still not sure how to fix this. It's very irritating! I will read an email on my ipad, then hit my imac and see that the email is sitting unread in my Mail inbox.

  • Using mail app..

    On tiger 10.4.11
I want to use mail app but i ve been asked to fill a @mac account so i filled the user name but it saus that "mail.mac.com" does not respond ? ...

    Great news, thanks!
Well, Lion will slow it down, but you have to get 10.6.8 Installed first.
Personally, I'd get an external drive to install 10.6 to, update it to 10.6.8, then Download 10.7 from the App Store & Install it on the external driive, leaving your 10.4.11 Disk to boot from if you need speed.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/10.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, I say 6 GB
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, I say 50 GB.
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

  • Best option to transfer entourage data to e-mail app on Lion?

Just transffered data from mac running Snow Leopard to a new mac running Lion when I discovered that Entourage is not supported.  What are my options to get the entourage data into an e-mail app on Lion?

Entourage 2008 is supported, what makes you think that it is not? unless you are using 2004 in which case you will need to upgrade to 2008.

  • Is there a way to send email without opening Mail.app?

    Hello,
I would like to be able to send email using either an Applescript or a shell script that would send email without opening Mail.app. The ideal solution would be using an account and settings (such SSL encryption of my password) that are stored in mail.app. However, if that is not possible, I could set up another email account to be used just for the purpose I have in mind so I don't have to worry about my password being exposed in clear text.
I've seen Applescripts that open Mail.app and then hide it in the background but the key requirement for my particular need is that Mail.app never open during the send process. I synchronize my email between my iMac and my Powerbook using Chronosync so it is critical that none of the files that store or index the actual mail in Mail.app be opened so as not to alter their modification dates.
    Thank you,
    James

If you upgrade to 10.4 there is a widget that will let you compose and send mail without opening Mail.
    Here's two other options.
    1. Does your isp have a web based email?
    2. Download a program like thunderbird for email. When you configure it end phony information for incoming mail and only fill in the correct infor for outgoing mail.

  • Using mail.app, exchange password expired, missing messages

Using Mail.app with an exchange account. Unknowingly my password had expired. I wrote lots of emails and pressed send. Got the 'whoosh' so I thought everything was ok. Subsequently I discovered my password had expired as I was not receiving new emails.
I then discovered the emails I was working on had not been sent (not in the exchange sent, outbox or drafts).
They are not locally in Mail.app, I can't find them in any of the local folders. What has happened? Is this a bug.
Any idea where the messages are please, 5 hours work down the drain if I can't recover them.
    TIA.

Mail works fine with Exchange 2003. This is how our accounts are configured:
    Incoming Mail Server:your exchange server.domain.com.au
    eg. server2.bunnings.com.au
    Username: domain\User alias\Full username
    eg. bunnings\bobs\bob.smith
    SMTP: smtp.bunnings.com.au
    Web Access Server: webmail.bunnings.com.au
You can then setup the LDAP options under the composing tab to get the email list from your Exchange server.
And no i do not work for Bunnings!
    Good Luck!

  • Cannot sort emails sent from Mail App and Exchange

When trying to sort emails on Outlook in Windows, lets say by "Flag", emails coming from a mac using mail app and exchange get placed at the top of the list.
Have tried sending emails from the same account via webmail and iphone and they get sorted correctly.
    Anyone has had this problem?

    So, Here's what happens:
    1) Send email from Laptop (Snow Leopard) with Exchange Integration
    2) Send email from iPhone (3.1) with Exchange Integration
In Outlook 2003 sort by flag (neither of these messages are flagged). Any email sent from the Snow Leopard is sorted first in the Unflagged category in Outlook. Any of the email sent from the iPhone is sorted normally.
There's no differences in the headers to cause these to sort differently. The only headers that differ are the Date, Subject/Thread-Topic, Thread-Index, Message-ID, x-ems-stamp. But, in the Message-ID it has the same domain.
Both Snow Leopard and iPhone are configured to use the same Exchange OWA/OWS.

  • Backup Gmail using Mail.app and IMAP

I would like to backup my Gmail emails using Apple Mail. I have IMAP turned on in Gmail. I know I need to add the account in Mail but I'm not sure what to do after that. I'm thinking I need to create a local mail folder in order to store the emails.
Also, how could I automate this? Is Mail the best option for this scenario? Again, I'm only wanting this as a backup for Gmail.

How about avoiding redundancy (http://superuser.com/questions/114253/backup-gmail-using-mail-app-and-imap-witho ut-redundancy)?
I got this all working, there's even this literally great guide on my superuser post (http://db.tidbits.com/article/10253) but IMAP generates a lot of repeated files due to gmail labels nature.
Anyone knows a way to circle around this and still be able to use IMAP and labels with mail.app and gmail?

  • Multiple mailboxes when using mail.app with google in IMAP.

    Hello,
I have just started using mail.app with IMAP and my google mail account appears to be in two place. The mail.app has the following interface in the left pane.
MAILBOXES, REMINDERS, RSS and GMAIL all in grey. Below the MAILBOXES i have got the following folders, inbox, sent and trash and below the GMAIL, i have got a replication of the structure in my google account.
which set of folders should i be using?
when i deleet the mail in the MAILBOXES it does not seem to delete it in All Mail folder under GMAIL.
IS the synchronisation between the mails in the mail.app and the google server on a periodic basis. can i force the synchronisation?

Mail works fine with Exchange 2003. This is how our accounts are configured:
    Incoming Mail Server:your exchange server.domain.com.au
    eg. server2.bunnings.com.au
    Username: domain\User alias\Full username

    SMTP: smtp.bunnings.com.au
    Web Access Server: webmail.bunnings.com.au
You can then setup the LDAP options under the composing tab to get the email list from your Exchange server.
And no i do not work for Bunnings!

  • How to enlarge when composing an email within the Mail app?

How to zoom-in (enlarge, make look bigger) when composing an email in the Mail app?
I am not interested in changing the resolution (which I am happy with).  For the most part I can just use Command and the "+" key when I cannot see something to enlarge the font, especially that of web pages.  This is also valid for reading incoming emails in the Mail app, too.  However, when I compose emails this functionality does not work.  I know I can actually increase the font but then I have to remember to decrease it before sending it (ridiculous step which one can easily forget about).  I know I can also transfer into Notes or Word but this is just extra unnecessary work.
Is there a solution to this, so that I can only rely on the Mail application?
    Many thanks in advance!

    Howdy Lavi,
It sounds as if what you want to do can be accomplished by using the Zoom control, one of the Mac operating system's Accessibility features. Using it you can quickly and easily make content either on the entire screen or just a small window larger and easier to see without affecting how the screen resolution or how the email will look when it is sent. See this article for Accessibility features -
OS X Mavericks: Use accessibility features
This article explains how to set up Zoom in System Preferences -

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
