Delayed Reactions

I'm running Tiger 10.4.3 on a new G5 Dual 2.7 with 4 GB of RAM. Should be a dream system right? But over the last couple of weeks certain functions in the Finder have slowed to a crawl. Click once on a file icon in the finder and nothing happens for three full minutes. This happens in column view but not in list or icon view, so it seems to be an issue with the system churning on the file info. Same delay when invoking the get info command. A Force Quit reveals that the Finder is not responding. Launching a document opens right away but then there is a delayed "Zooming" of the icon after it has already opened - an annoying delayed reaction. Anyone else having this problem or know what could be interfering with the finder in this way? Spotlight and Find have also ceased to work but that may be a separate problem.
Repairing permissions and the recent OS Upgrade haven't made a difference.
Three-quarters of my hard drive is empty.

As a first step, check Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption for system troubleshooting procedures (which includes repairing disk permissions as the 2nd of 3) and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.
If this doesn't help or resolve the problems with the Finder, check Finder issues? How to delete its preferences.
In addition and for future reference, check Installing software updates.

  • Event problem - slow/delayed reaction to keypresses!

    Hi all!
Im trying to implement a first person free mouse view with strafe in the game im working on. I use KeyListener interface and my problem is that when I hold down a key it fires a KeyEvent to begin with! Then after a delay of aproximately half a second to a second more event are being fired. It gives really slow reaction - something that I can not use in my game. What to do? If someone has a good fix to this issue please post a little code snippet I can check out.
I wish you all a good day.

It just seems easier to set a bool. true when keyPressed - false when released. And then just run while trueOf course this creates an infinite loop which uses up the CPU resources. Not a very good idea.
Yup, my thoughts exactly (see reply #4).Using a Thread or a Timer is a similiar in concept (much better then the above suggestion), but there are differences.
For example when using a Thread your code will execute then you will sleep for a period of time. So if your code takes 100 milliseconds to execute and you sleep for 1000, then every cycle will take 1100 ms. The total length of time between events will vary between CPU's since the 100ms execution time will vary depending on the speed of your CPU. However, when using a Timer an event will fire every 1000ms whether your processing takes 100ms or 500ms. Which means your cycle time is exactly 1000ms.
Using a Thread you must use the SwingUtilities.invokeLater to update the GUI since the code executes in a non Event Thread. However when using a Timer all the code executes in the Event Thread so you don't need to worry about SwingUtilities.invokeLater. Of course if your code is heavily CPU bound you may need to create a separate Thread anyway so you don't block the Event Thread from responding to events.
But the main point is using a Timer will give you a cycle time of a fixed duration, whereas using a Thread will give you a variable cycle time depending on CPU and duration of executable code.
The choice of implementation is up to the OP.

  • Why does my firefox have a delayed reaction while trying to type or scrole?

It has a jerky affect and it puts letters when I type in after I type them rather them when I type I type them. Scrolling is jerky and delayed also. I've updated to the lasted firefox so I know that's not the problem. I usually have about 4-6 tabs open at a time and that's when it seems to get worse but not real sure about that. I have a web site so I really need these tabs open if possible.

  • AE Strange "delayed reaction" network performance when on ethernet

    Hello,
I recently replaced an old D-Link router with an AE and everything works great. I have my MBP set to mount my NAS on startup whether on Wi-Fi or ethernet. In both cases no issues EXCEPT for when I go on ethernet for the first couple of minutes. The connection to the NAS fails, and if I click on the NAS name on Finder (it still appears under SHARED) it will give me a "connection failed" message. If I re-mount the NAS manually using the IP address it works fine. That said, a few minutes after I've made the ethernet connection, everything does go back to normal and I can access my NAS from the SHARED section on finder. I'm really scratching my head on this one...any ideas?
    Thanks!

Do NOT use a USB hub with an APE...
I had two LaCie HDs, so I figure I connect them both with a USB hub. This was not a good idea. As soon as I removed the hub the network BW was at a steady 1-2Mb/s, with an occasional peak to 5Mb/s. Still way lower than the theoretical maximum, but hey, I guess you can't have it all.
    Thanks,

  • IPhone 6 with iOS 8.02 delayed reaction after touching a screen item

I can select an item and it does not change immediately, so i press sit again and maybe again. Any thoughts on this?

I have the same problem on my iPhone 6 plus!
I took my phone to the genius bar today because my camera wasn't focusing, and when I got my phone back, after they replaced the camera, the touch id was not working at all. I can't even add new fingerprints, because it keeps saying it failed, yet it won't even let me try to add it. SO STRANGE! My reachability feature stopped working, too.
Also, my wallpaper was blurry, try to reset it and it said it couldn't download the picture from my iCloud. There is also an update available, but I cannot download it because I get an error message.
I tried all the same things you did, and it was to no avail.
Going back to the genius bar tonight.

  • Delayed reaction on "Visibility" change

The attached form has a "Specify Other" text field that should become visible when "Other" is selected from the "Role" drop-down list. In practice, when you select "Other", the "Specify Other" field doesn't become visible, but when you make any other selection after "Other", the "Specify Other" field becomes visible. This means that you effectively have to select "Other" twice to be able to complete the "Specify Other" field (which becomes required when "Other" is the selected "Role", whether the "Specify Other" field is visible or not).
    https://acrobat.com/#d=N6JAgPgsrSX1D03Nv09oCw
Anyone seen this problem before and figured out how to make it work correctly?

Dropdown selections aren't immediately available as a rawValue - the value doesn't register until you exit the field, so your code should work fine on the Exit event.
You can use xfa.event.newText to get the selected value, so try this as your if statement:
    if (this.boundItem(xfa.event.newText) == 6)

  • Pop up windows don't open or have a very long delay-why?

When i visit certain websites and I click on a link that would open another window it often doesn't open. Sometimes I will come back to my Mac 30 mins later to find that they have all opened. Some sort of delayed reaction that can take 10's of minutes.
Sites where i have experienced this today are http://www.warrensmith-skiacademy.com/ then trying to click onto course availability. Also http://www.findaproperty.com/displayprop.aspx?edid=00&salerent=0&pid=6256674 when i try to click on map nothing comes up. There are other websites where I have the same type of difficulties.
If i transfer over to Safari everything is OK. This problem also didn't used to be an issue when I was running Leopard OS I'm now running latest Snow Leopard.
Does anyone have any ideas or is it just that Firefox is very buggy with OSX 10.6 ?
    Thanks

I tried on http://www.warrensmith-skiacademy.com/ with Firefox 3.6 on Mac OS 10.6 and it works fine.
Try going through these steps: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes , extensions/themes/plugins may considerably slow down Firefox.
Some additional questions that may help track down the problem:
    - does this always happen when opening a new window (e.g. using File -> New Window)
    - when popups on some sites open slower, do popups on other sites still open fast?
    - do popups generally open slow or does it get slower the longer you use Firefox without quitting it?

  • Delay in reacting when I do anything

When I try to do anything there is a 5 second delay ie when typing this it has a delay in the letters showing up. When I click a link or tool bar item or in fact anything I do there is a delayed reaction which has got worse over the last few days.
    Would appreciated any help.

I am having the same problem with safari. Just started this week. I repaired permissions, emptied cache and reset Safari - though deselected a few things, like history, passwords, cookies. Scrolling is jerky and delayed. Typing, hi-lighting, right clicking, clicking on links etc all wait before responding. Now and then everything works for a short time. Then the delays and poor scrolling begin again. This is only a problem in Safari. Everything works fine in mail, text edit etc. Have made no changes recently.

  • Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.

Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.
Hey everyone.  I am writing about my 13 inch Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
Recently it has been extremely slow and on occasion has not started up.
I have reset the PRAM and SMC already, yet it is still very slow.  I have a couple theories about what might have caused it, are they plausible?
Theory 1:  It’s a software problem. I tried to upgrade to 10.8.2 but halfway through the upgrade the computer restarted and somehow I was still on 10.8.1.  For fear of a big issue happening I didn’t try to upgrade again. Perhaps it is a flaw in Apple’s software update?
The important thing to note about this update is that I tried to install 10.8.2 around a month or two weeks BEFORE I started having problems.  So if these issues were due to 10.8.2’s failed update then it certainly was a delayed reaction.
I would of course like to update to 10.8.2 BUT as my computer is acting EXTREMELY slow and having trouble turning on occasionally I am worried the software update will completely brick the machine.  Is that possible?  Should I actually finish through with the software update?
Theory 2:  It was an electricity problem.
The computer died when I was sitting at a café plugged into their wall sockets.  A few days later when I came back to the same spot with my old macbook which is now being used in lieu of the Air it suddenly turned black for a little while. Sensing it might be an electricity surge or something with their system I unplugged the cable.  I am not sure if that was paranoia though.
Can an electricity surge or a bad outlet fry a computer?  Can it fry the ram so the computer is extremely slow? Does that theory hold any water?
Thanks for your help diagnosing this problem.
    All the best.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • IPhone 5s BLE updata rate

This is a copy of a post I just put on TI's E2E forum...
I just got an iPhone 5s so I could test compatibility with a custom app/custom BLE circuit...
Note: after fixing some iOS7 issues, everything works fine on ALL BLE capable iPad and iPhone devices from Apple.
Again, all devices (except iPhone 5s) work with iOS5, iOS6 and iOS7. (just to be completely accurate, iPhone 5 and iPad 4 and mini's were not tested with iOS5)
My apps are using multiple BLE devices connected simultaneously.
When testing with the new iPhone 5s (note also that I tested with a second iPhone 5s just to make sure it was not my phone specific), the sampled data seemed to be rather "sluggish" and in fact would continue to be collected by the iPhone 5s even after the input from the transmitting devices ceased. (apparently caching)
Another note: with 3 devices transmitting simultaneously, I can capture sample rates up to 50 samples/sec for each transmitting device with the iPhone 5 and the iPad 4, and when I increase the sample rate on the transmitting devices (tested up to 1000 samples/sec) the iOS devices "topped out" at appx 50 samples/sec which is currently acceptable for my current application so I set the BLE transmitting devices to 50 samples/sec to conserve battery life.  The indicators on the app which are affected by the sample rate are responsive an (snappy) as the data changes and when sending more than 50 samples/sec, the "extra" data is apparently being disregarded (dropped) as the "real time" indicators are using the most recently transmitted data with no apparent "caching".
Note: apps were compiled with xcode5 in both iOS6 and iOS7 - no difference in testing.
When testing with only one device, transmitting at 50 samp/sec, if I continue transmitting long enough, I can get the BLE connection to fail (over running a buffer?).  I have to lower the transmission rate down to 20 samples/sec or lower to let the iPhone 5s "keep up".  this is rather disappointing as the iPhone 5s (64 bit) is supposed to be so much faster and I fear that the new iPad to be announced this month may have the same issues if it follows the iPhone 5s architecture.
I downloaded the current iOS keyfob app from TI's wiki (remember to change  type:CBCharacteristicWriteWithoutResponse]; to  type:CBCharacteristicWriteWithResponse];), and got 2 of my TI keyfobs and programmed them with the latest "keyfob" code (BLE-CC254x-1.3.2 stack), one with no changes (ACCEL_READ_PERIOD  50) 20 samples/sec, and the other one changed to (ACCEL_READ_PERIOD  20) 50 samples/sec. - you can even change to a faster sample rate to see a more dramatic depiction of what I'm describing.
Connect each of the keyfobs in turn and shake them and watch the "bars" and you can see the "delayed" reaction - (cached).  The 20 samples/second keyfob is more responsive but you can still see a small amount of delay even down to 20 samples/sec.
I also got out 2 of my "SensorTags" and repeated the same tests with the same results just to see if there was something in the older keyfob code that might be causing this vs. the newer styled coding the SensorTags utilize, but again, the results are the same which points me back the the iPhone 5s.
I can't find anything from Apple's side about the way the 5s may be different but it appears that the 5s caches BLE data and all the rest of Apple's previous devices apparently do not.  Also, I could not find anything in the iOS or xcode side that gives any options for turning caching on or off (if that is indeed what is really happening), but even if that were the case, the exact same code (iOS) can be run on all devices with only the 5s being different.
    Any thoughts out there?
I think that this should be important to anyone out there who plans on collecting "real time" data and wants to be able to support the latest hardware...
I'd be happy to give more detail on any of the tests I've done if you are unable to replicate this.
    Thanks,
    evw

I just got the iPad Air and can confirm that it behaves identical to the iPhone 5s as described above...
Is anyone out there concerned about this?
I've submitted bug reports, informed DTS, and posted to TI's E2E, but still nothing...

  • Slow system while printing PDF's

when printing PDF's to any of several printers (letter or tabloid sizes)the system response slows to an unbearable crawl lots of spinning beach balls come and go. the only system function that does not appear to be affected is the mouse movement, mouse clicks however are affected. I can't even change windows let alone apps without multiple minutes of delayed reactions. I used activity monitor to find "PrintJobMgr" seems to be using up to 100% of cpu resources and over 1GB of virtual memory at some times during the print process. I understand that PDF's are slow to print but that is not my problem as the print speed seems okay, just while printing I can't do anything else.
Can anyone help or have same experience?

What happens if you drag several PDFs right to the Printer's Icon or Printers Window without using Acrobat?
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Help! Installed new RAM and now screen isn't coming on!

    Hi
I'm in a bit of a mess and would be grateful for any help with this one:
I have a Powerbook G3 500mhz Pismo that currently has a 512mb card in the top slot (Kingston PB100/512) that I installed about two years ago with no problems and an original 128mb in the bottom. At Christmas I bought another 512mb for the bottom slot – (Kingston KTA-PBG4/512 - This one is smaller than the first but it was the one reccomended by Kingston on their website for the Pismo).
I have just got round to installing it after backing up my system and I have good instructions on how to do it (I have replaced the HD two years previous with no problems)
Firstly I have to mention that just before I changed the RAM the laptop fell from a small stool (about 1.5feet high) onto carpet due to the unbalancing effect of taking out the battery/CD ROM. It landed on its edge where the power socket is. I immediately put it back together and turned it on to make sure it was ok - it came on fine and there were no problems visually, mechanically or otherwise, so I carried on with the installation.
I installed the new 512mb card in the bottom slot and re-assembled but when I turned it on the screen remained black! From the computer itself, however, it sounded as if it had started up ok – there was the chime and the familiar sound of the hard drive at start up.
To troubleshoot I removed the new RAM card and put back the old RAM as it was – this made no difference. I checked to see if the processor board was firmly in place or if I had dislodged any connectors by mistake within the area that I had worked but this made no difference. I also tried to re-set the parameter RAM and this made no difference.
Because the laptop took a small knock prior to installation, I am not sure if that has caused something to come loose or damage of some kind but as I mentioned I did test it immediately and it worked, so it’s either a delayed reaction or the new RAM card has caused it. – (As mentioned there is a difference between the two 512 cards in both name and size but the smaller size of the newer one I assume just reflects advancement in technology and it was reccomended by Kingston!)
If anybody has any advice on this I would be very grateful (and also, if anybody can point me in the direction of instructions on how to take the pismo apart to get to the connections to the screen that would be great – in case I have to do it)
    Many Thanks Barry
    PowerBook G3500mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    SpottyFox,
It sounds like you are properly seating the CPU card from your description, so I don't believe that is your problem. I am glad you checked the pins (I should have mentioned that as the next step if the reseating did not help). I cannot answer whether anything was damaged from your description of the pins; I have read where others have realigned bent pins with success so maybe your mileage will vary.
Start up your Pismo, then shine a flashlight directly into the display; if you can see data being written to the display, just the backlight is refusing to light. If this is the case, check the inverter board connections. The inverter is under the clutch cover and powers the fluorescent backlight in the display. Enlarge the bottom picture in this link to see the inverter:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G3-Pismo/Inverter-Page-10-Inverter
Check connections at each end of the inverter. Disassembly is not as extensive as this guide suggests. Support the back of the display, then remove the main battery, optical drive, lay the keyboard on its face on the palm rest, heat shield, and clutch cover...that's it.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/6.0.0.html
You might also connect the Pismo to an external display; failure here would suggest a more serious problem.
