Delaying a service until a kernel module has loaded and "settled"

Hi,
I have a problem: a certain program is started too soon before a kernel module has had time to settle down. That means that the program needs to be restarted manually after each reboot, otherwise it won't detect the hardware.
The service in question is tvheadend (from aur) and the module ddbridge, which I've installed from outside of the kernel tree (since the one in kernel is out of date). That is a beta driver so probably it should settle sooner, but it doesn't.
From the recent boot (and others) I can see this:

Any ideas how to 'delay' the service? Is there a .target or service (or similar) in systemd which can see if the kernel modules have settled down?
Is my only option making a dirty script that will check that the device nodes are there, or hard-coding a delay in the unit file? How would one do that?

A simple way to do that would be to use a systemd timer unit, named '/etc/systemd/system/tvheadend.timer':
[Unit]
Description=Delaying tvheadend start
[Timer]
OnStartupSec=20
AccuracySec=5
Then:
# cp /usr/lib/systemd/system/tvheadend.service /etc/systemd/system
# cd /etc/systemd/system
# vim tvheadend.service
# diff /usr/lib/systemd/system/tvheadend.service tvheadend.service

Finally:
# systemctl disable tvheadend.service
# systemctl add-wants multi-user.target tvheadend.timer
# systemctl daemon-reload
This timer will start the 'tvheadend.service' 20 seconds (+~5 seconds) after systemd start time.
To my opinion, this is the easiest way to do that (no udev rule to write with the systemd device unit features which is much more complicated).

    There are descriptions (http://en.onoclea.com/bits/hp-microserver-remote-access-card-ipmi-on-linux.html, http://wiki.adamsweet.org/doku.php?id=ipmi_on_linux) how to load the ipmi_si module with manual parameters. Tried, no error, no response, no modules loaded (check with lsmod).

    The firmware is installed to the correct directory and the PKGBUILD doesn't generate any errors. I've tried b43-fwcutter manually as well to no avail. Even if that were the case though it doesn't explain why the new kernel also rejects the usbnet, ath9k, and b44 modules. Basically I'm stuck on this old(ish) kernel until this is fixed if I want any sort of network connectivity.

    Does any one know how to fix this? AFter a while it became annoying.

    More importantly, the modules are built for a specific kernel version.  So if the kernel gets updated and the virtualbox modules get overlooked somehow, then they are not going to work.  You can always rebuild them with makepkg and ABS though.

    Just got one of these and kernel module is not loading under kernel 3.11.2-1-ARCH.

    Are you sure it should work? If you check linuxwacom-announce mailing list, you will see that for your device (Intuos Pro):
    - X11 support is added by xf86-input-wacom 0.23.0
    - configuration support is added in libwacom 0.8
    - kernel support is added in input-wacom 0.19 but isn't in mainline kernel yet - on 28'th Spet Jason said: "We don't yet have support for the  new "Intuos" line, but we expect our next release in six weeks' time to include it."
    I'd say you have to wait for newer kernel, or try installing input-wacom on your own risk (different thing from xf86-input-wacom). Patch for mainline kernel reached Dmitry Torokhov's input tree - but isn't merged with official kernel yet, even 3.12rc5 still does not have those patches.

    Hello everyone,
    After I've update to 3.10 (I think that that was the problem), my kernel modules seem not to load automatically anymore.
    In the past, programs like efibootmgr and Virtual Box worked without a problem, now I have to manually load the appropriate kernel modules (efivars and vboxdrv, respectively) for the programs to work. I've done a quick check and it looks like I also have this problem on a different machine. Is this normal?

    Yes, updating went fine and I'm now running linux 3.10.5-1 (also rebooted).
    I'm aware that I can load them via modules-load.d, but I though it was neat that everything loaded automatically, and I just was wondering if this is expected behavior. If it is, I would update the wiki and such, but I'm still not sure why they would remove this. (I haven't heard anything about it)
    Do you know of any other modules that I can test? That should be loaded automatically?

  • The loading icon keeps turning after the site has loaded, and since the last update, have had quite a few problems loading some sites, specifically secure sites such as bank websites and "My Ebay" when I try to sign in.

  • [SOLVED] systemd: create a service file that loads a kernel module

    Hi, I have a daemon that I want to convert to a service unit of systemd.
    The daemon tests if a module is loaded, and if not, modprobes it.
    I do not want to load that module at boot up, only if the service is launched.
    Is there a "proper" way to add something like RequiredModule=xxx to a service unit?

    Maybe simply run modprobe with ExecStartPre. The command succeeds even if the module was already loaded.

    So I assume I have an old version dotted around somewhere, but I'm not sure about how it's all loaded and such.
    Now, quoting something I'd come across a few times and taking it from thinkwiki:
    If you lose hardware acceleration after a driver update this can be caused by an old fglrx kernel module being loaded.
    Check out /var/log/Xorg.0.log for a message like:
        (WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.
        (EE) fglrx(0): incompatible kernel module detected - HW accelerated OpenGL will not work
    You can verify this yourself by looking at the version message some lines above. It should read something not matching the installed version like:
        (II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module Version Information:
        (II) fglrx(0): Name: fglrx
        (II) fglrx(0): Version: 8.10.19
    The cause for this trouble might be that there resist multiple versions of the fglrx module within the kernel module search path.
    Go to /lib/modules/<your linux kernel version>/ and type # grep fglrx modules.dep.
    If grep finds multiple lines you nailed down the problem. All you have to do now is to delete any versions of the module (look at the filedate) but the most current one. Then run # depmod and you are done.
    Hint:
    Newer versions (8.21.7) of the fglrx module seem to be installed in the extra/ subdirectory.
    Older versions (8.19.10) used to be located in the kernel/drivers/char/drm/ subdirectory.
    How does this apply to Arch?  I only found one instance of fglrx by using that method.
    Edit: Forgot to add that I've tried reinstalling a few times, it doesn't really seem to do anything.  Wondering if I should attempt to install an older version or something, but I don't get why the driver numbers don't match for me.  Surely others have updated their drivers too.

  • [SOLVED] Loading Kernel Modules with Options

    Hi,
    I am trying to load the nf_conntrack_ftp kernel module on boot. I followed the Arch Wiki's article on kernel module loading [0] and created a file in /etc/modules-load.d/ called nf_conntrack_ftp.conf:
    /etc/modules-load.d/nf_conntrack_ftp.conf wrote:# Load the nf_conntrack_ftp kernel module at boot
    nf_conntrack_ftp
    This loads the nf_conntrack_ftp module on boot just fine; unfortunately the module uses the default FTP port (21) and I need it to run on a different port (6621). When I try to dynamically load nf_conntrack_ftp using modprobe nf_conntrack_ftp ports=6621 it loads just fine and according to systools has the port set correctly. However, if I try to set the port anywhere in /etc/modules-load.d/ I always get an error message during boot saying:
    Failed to start Load Kernel Modules. See 'systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service' for details.
    Looking at the systemctl status message as recommended by the error message on boot doesn't yield anything useful:

    What am I missing / doing wrong? Is it not possible to set kernel module parameters on boot? Does nf_conntrack_ftp need to be loaded by the initramfs, i.e. do I need to add the modconf hook to my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf?

    D'oh! Thanks for pointing that out, what a stupid oversight on my part:
    The files that tell the system which kernel modules to load go into /etc/modules-load.d/.
    The files that tell the system which parameters to pass to the kernel modules when loading them go into /etc/modprobe.d/.
    Now that each file is where it belongs everything works.

    there are three different USB controllers: OHCI, UHCi, EHCI
    you can't simply disable one of these. all depends on hardware setup: if you have OHCI and UHCI then you need both. So "again" is not again, but system requirement.

    scsi_mod.ko -- you need this for all the SATA stuff to work right, I'm pretty sure
    no, you don't. But you need to check your hardware dependencies. I have SATA, and the only SCSI stuff loaded is SG and SD
    sometimes you will see several modules which have partially the same name. e.g. firewire or usb or snd. all of these might be required for firewire (Assuming that you are using firewire at all) or sound to work. Sometimes the overlap.
    my modules take only 2.6MB:
    du -sh /lib/modules/2.6.28.7-slim
    2.6M    /lib/modules/2.6.28.7-slim
    without nvidia driver (this one alone is 7.6MB)
    does this speed up kernel? Only to some extend and in fact only particular modules will slow down boot time. In my case PCMCIA is slowing down kernel.
    O.k. so what about disk space?
    Are you kidding? default Arch kernel modules take 69MB and current disks are what? several (tenths, hundreds) GB? So this is no argument really.
    So what about RAM?
    You will be much better off trimming down your DM (KDE or Gnome) than kernel assuming that you are using one of these, however even small WM can be trimmed down. These two (KDE and Gnome) are pigs, but you can easily cut some fat without loosing usability.
    So why I did this? not to gain anything. Out of curiosity really
    there is a lot of tools that may help:
    lspci
    lsusb
    cpuinfo
    for example that may help.

  • Kernel module loading error. "relocation error: R_AMD64_32"

    I am in the process of porting a stable sparc64 kernel module to amd64 and have run into a road block. When the module loads on amd64 I recieve many errors like the one below.

  • How to communicate wite kernel module

    After a kernel module was loaded successfully, how to communicate wite this kernel module like change the status of the kernel module.
    In Linux, I can use /proc file to do that. But, In solaris, /proc file is just used for processors.
    Now, how can I communicate write my kernel module? Can I use /proc file to do that like in Linux?

  • Lots of unneeded kernel modules loading up

    Through trying to get suspend working I noticed just how many kernel modules are loaded on boot up. I've got a quite simple laptop (doesn't even have a cdrom) so really don't need many kernel drivers but I've got irda, loads of sata drivers, firewire, several raid drivers, practically every filesystem I know of (but don't use) etc. I've got hardware detection turned on. Should I get all these modules started up?
    I know I can add a !entry in rc.conf but there must be over 80 modules I don't want. Is there anything else I can do?

    Remove *all* subsystems you do not need. If, for example, you boot from an IDE drive, you should have this in mkinitrd.conf:
    # Disable whole subsystems by setting to "1"

    Remove other extraneous stuff. If, for example, you boot from an IDE drive but don't use an IDE floppy drive, put "ide_floppy" in the REMOVE_MODULE list.
    Also, use the module banlist in /etc/rc.conf. If you don't use IPv6, put the ipv6 module in there. Don't use your PC speaker? put pcspkr in the banlist.

  • Kernel panic with ipf and patch 125014-02?

    Hi,
    After bringing a bunch of Sparc servers running Solaris 10 up to current patch level I've been experiencing strange and unstable behavior. All servers are running with an ipfilter configuration.
    One server has been freezing on the network interface at least once every day without any syslog notice. A reboot is the only way up again.
    Now today one server (a Internet proxy server) did a kernel panic twice - never seen that before on this server.
    It seems like it was caused by the kernel module ipf. And since it has never happend before I guess it could be caused by the IP filter patch 125014-02.
    Anyone experiencing something similar and am I on the right track with suspecting this patch to be bad?

    We had another panic & reboot, so we will be forced to disable IPF firewall
    (is svcadm disable sufficient, or do I need to do more to prevent the
    panics?)
    How can I be notified when there is a proper Sun patch to fix this?

    This system panic'd due to bug 6490522: S10 System panic bad mutex in
    ipf:fr_derefrule. Unfortunately at this time we do not have an offical fix
    for
    this bug, however we do have a test binary built. Please let me know if you
    would like to test this binary on this system.
