Delaying Boot Sequence
*Hello everybody,*
I just bought a eSata PCI card for my MacPro along with a LaCie D2 Quadra.
It looks like my drive now takes a bit more time to be mounted by the system which is not really a problem. My issue is actually that some apps installed are using this external drive, and it seems that they tend to boot before the drive is being mounted, which prevent them to find the data they need and make them create a volume folder that makes my drive name incremented with a "1" once detected.
That's why I would like to know if I can somehow delay the booting of some login applications.
I found this old post from 2005 that describe exactly the problem I have in a slightly different situation.
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=132624
Unfortunately, my level in AppleScript is second to none so I don't really know what to do with the answer they give. Also, the thread is closed, so I wasn't able to post my question there.
Thanks a lot for your help.
Here is a script by dzern that might make more sense, just substitute your application name instead, and perhaps play around with the delay time to make it fit the external device login.
http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=95700
+p.s. "second to none" means the best, sorry to be picky there, but isn't it better to not be in the same room as me right now to learn that.+

HP Media Center M800y, System # GG755AV#ABA, Windows Vista Ultimate, Desktop will not complete boot sequence as the Blue & white HP screen which doesn't always appear, will give options to either
a).Press F10 to enter setup or,
b). to press f11 to start recovery partition in hard drive that doesn't work when tried.
Can enter setup when blue & white HP screen appears but do not know what to look for when inside.
If I pick none of the 2 options, the screen just turns black with a horizontal line "-" blinking at the upper left hand corner of the screen. Sometimes the screen will not even show the blue & white HP screen and it just stays black.
I changed the CMOS battery and nothing happened except that now the blue & white HP screen with the 2 options appears even less when I attempt to start up... I also tried using the recovery disks to no avail...
A power surge knocked out the power in my building and the computer suddenly stopped working while streaming netflix video afterwards... Then when attempting to re-boot once power was restored, The screen showed some very wierd, almost alien fonts on the top of the black screen that almost resembled Chinese or hyrogliphics. Upon further attempts to re-boot to no avail, I'm at a loss in diagnosing the possible causes or failure modes... Can somebody help me in the right direction???
I'm leaning towards either a corrupted bios via virus, or a fried hard drive or both. If you think something else or this has happened before and anyone knows a fix, I would be eternally grateful for your guidance in resolving this problem I'm experiencing.
Respectfully,
HenryI would lean more to a hard drive problem.
A quick test is to temporarily disconnect the hard drive - the system should quickly indicate it can't find the HDD, can't boot, etc. You should also have the option to press one of the function keys to enter system BIOS.
If when you hook the drive up again - it starts getting flaky/slow again to do anything - you've likely found your culprit.

External monitor in boot sequence
Hi all,
i have a hp dv6000 laptop with a busted monitor.. so far, i had managed to get by using an external monitor. but the problem is, the external monitor only works when windows loads up..
how do i 'force' the laptop to detect the external monitor during boot sequence, especially now when im trying to reformat the laptop.
i know you have to press f11 during start up but if i cant see anything. the external monitor will only start detecting during windows login screen.
help..I have a HP Mini 1000 and I am having the exact same problem. I think I need to change a BIOS setting, but I can't see anything since the LCD was broken, and I completely removed it. I can see when Windows starts, but I need to see the boot so I can install a new operating system. Does anybody know the BIOS sequence key by key so that I can do this blindly? I can get in with F10 as Windows does not start when I am in the this mode, so I am definitely in the BIOS.

How do I change default boot sequence?
I just got a K8T Ne0 FIS2R. I am booting to a SATA 120G drive that has Win XP Prof loaded up. When I attach my IDE drives, I have to stop the post (F11) to manually point to "BBS-0 RAID" or my machine will default to an IDE drive (which ever is plugged in) and give me "NTLDR not loaded."
Can I change the default boot sequence (i.e. so that I don't have to manually stop-n-point every time)?
All my drives (1 SATA, 2 IDE) work once I point to the right startup device (SATA 120G).
Thanks for any helpful hints.Quote

G5 Power Mac won't make it through boot sequence, red "LED #1" on w/o power
Recently I bought a new LCD monitor to replace my big ol' CRT. The other day I brought it home and plugged it in. I thought I'd leave the CRT plugged in while I was at it to see if the video card would support both monitors. I'm hoping that the following is coincidental...
My G5 has not made it through the boot sequence since. The computer starts > moves through the white rotating apple "clock" > transitions to the blue progress "Mac OS X is starting..." window and freezes there. Once when doing an NVRAM reset it made it to the login window, but no mouse/keyboard response. Then, regardless of how far it gets, all the fans start running at full speed and it sounds like I'm at the airport behind a 747.
The worst news is that "LED #1" is on at all times regardless of whether the computer is on or off. The support site says to take it to a repair shop. I'm wondering a couple things:
1. Has anyone been able to fix this issue w/o taking it to a repair shop?
2. Has anyone had this issue and have an idea of what I'm up against w/o an ACPP?
Thanks for any help at all!Thank you for the suggestions. I tried everything and then had to put up the white flag. The only thing I could do was to run fsck and find I had a good disk.
Took it to the local Apple dudes (Haddock Computers - great guys) and they isolated the power supply as the issue, and... determined that there is a replacement program for them. Posting with the machine now, good times.
Thanks again -

The screen of my iMac flashes green during boot-sequence, then returns to normal.
During the boot-sequence the screen of my Imac 27" flashes green (once), then returns to normal. This does not happen when I boot my Windows (Bootcamp) partition, so I assume this is some kind of OSX driver error. This started to happen only after I installed the latest patch (10.9.3). Did anybody else encounter this and/or knows how to get rid of it ?
Hey fumanchu,
Did a small google search and found the following:
http://www.likelyanswer.com/28020629/My-Macbook-Pro-Had-A-Flashing-Red,-Blue,-Gr een-Screen-At-Startup
which lead me to:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/21535976#24471966
which lead me to:

Basically reset the PRAM.
Worked for me hope it works for you buddy. I did it due what the first link said "might be user abuse to the display". doesn't sound good.

Can't see second HDD in the BIOS boot sequence choice menu
we have 2 HDDs in a X2170 x86 server
we've installed Solaris 10 on one, and RH on the other.
however, when accessing the BIOS, we can't select which one to boot from in the boot sequence (the "second" HDD does not appear as a choice in the boot sequence menu), and must therefore manually swap the drives into the primary drive slot to boot on our OS of choice...
what are we doing wrong ? how come our second HDD does not appear ?Hi,
Really appreciate your continued support - OK, here's detailed response/update:
1. Both disks are the originals and I've checked both with another PC in external caddy and both seem A1.
2. Have tried doing as you suggested with the BIOS, but no can do. The BIOS seems to be very limited - it is as follows:
ACPI version 1.2
Disks are listed as follows : Current State Built-in HDD1 = 2RAID-0
Built-in HDD2 = 2RAID-0
Create State Built-in HDD1 = 2RAID-0
Built-in HDD2 = 2RAID-0
It lists both disks at the end with their Toshiba Part Nrs, capacity, etc
3. +When you install recovery image (WXP with recovery discs) both HDDs are recognized properly but after SP3 installation the second one is not visible for Windows explorer and disc management+
+Can you confirm this?+
Sequence of events was :
Installed XP (checked config and both disks recognised by Windows)
Installed SP2 (successfully)
Tried install SP3 - was not successful and machine shut itself down.
After unsuccessfully trying to get it back up, re-installed XP
Checked config and now D: drive not seen by Windows
Swapped disks over in slots to check for slot failure - C: disk worked aok in D: disk slot - but D: disk not seen in the other
Again removed the D: disk and checked it in external caddy on other PC - no probs works aok
And that's where I'm left.
Seems that there's something about the current state of the D: disk drive that is preventing XP from seeing it - yet the BIOS does ......
Is there any utility I can download that could help sort ??
Again, many TIA

Hi,
I could not find any reference how to define the boot sequence in SMF, such as in the /etc/rc directories the SXX and KXX jobs. Where
can I define this in SMF?
Regards,
HorstThe boot sequence is defined by the dependencies expressed by the various managed services upon one another. A quick start for smf(5) is available at
http://sun.com/bigadmin/content/selfheal/
You can affect the sequence by adding/removing or enabling/disabling services, or by modifying their dependencies. You can deliver your old init scripts into /etc/rc*.d and they will still work, except in some limited cases.

IMac shuts down on 1/3 of boot sequence
Hello,
My 20 inch 2007 iMac suddenly started shutting down on 1/3 of boot sequence. This happened after the mac just shut down while i was working on it, since this happened the mac will not boot. The Apple logo appears, the loading bar appears, it gets to 1/3 off the bar, then it disappears, and the mac shuts down. I already used the disk utility to check the disk, there seems to be no problem. Also, i already re-installed MacOS, this did not have any effect as well.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
Mac info:
iMac 7,1 20 inch
Processor: Intel core 2 duo, 2.4 ghz
4GB of Ram.Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

[FAIL] in boot sequence related to alsactl / Intel audio hardware
Hey,
I get the following [FAIL] during the boot sequence: http://codepad.org/gzKZaEyF
Although the sound seems to be working afterwards. Any ideas ?I too have occassionally encountered alsactl issues upon booting after an upgrade. It seems on occassion the asound.state file gets corrupted during an update of some kind.
The solution is simple. Re-create your asound.state file.
# alsamixer
Re-set your default volume levels.
# alsactl -f /var/lib/alsa/asound.state store
Settings have now been saved.
# alsactl -f /var/lib/alsa/asound.state restore
Tests to ensure the file is valid and can be loaded.
Providing you do not get any errors here, all should now be well!
Cheers. -
Recovering IPS-4260 6.0 that is not completing boot sequence
Hi all,
I have a 4260 with 6.0 Image that is not completing the booting sequence, it stops at "grub". As you are all aware, the 4260 do not have CD drive to boot from.
Any idea how to recover it. I downloaded the recovery image with .PKG extension but I am unable to find the procedure how to use it for the IPS recovery.
Appreciate your expertise.

P67A-GD65 : Boot sequence keeps changing after installing SSD
Hi,
Before I had the SSD, all was fine and running on IDE. After installing SSD and changing mode to AHCI, the boot sequence keeps changing after reboot. I did not reset the CMOS after installing the SSD. I had disabled all boot except for the SSD (which is connected to SATA Port 1). And I did save by pressing F10 after changing the sequence in BIOS.
Appreciate your advise.
Thank you.I have the same problem. The board decides to try and boot from some other device, even though the SSD is detected. Very annoying.
I'm using the sata cable that came with the board; e.g. brand new.

Questions :
1. What is the factory default setting for the boot sequence for the Satellite Pro M70 ?
2. What is the procedure for changing the boot sequence during the POST phase of startup ?
3. What is the most "sensible" boot sequence, with & without an external FDD attached ?
Thanks
AlanCBJimi
Thanks for your reply.
Pressing the F2 key during POST takes you into the Phoenix Bios Setup Utility.
On the menu there are 5 pages of setup options and info, including a "Boot" page, which it would appear, allows you to change the Boot Priority (sequence).
Default setting is HDD>CD/DVD>FDD>LAN. Therefore it would seem that there are 2 options for changing the boot priority (sequence), with the Toshiba HWSetup Utility in the ControlPanel, as you indicated, being the other.
I did not check, but one or more of the boot devices appear to have sub-categories, presumably along the lines you have given below for the HDD.
I will check this later.
Pressing F12 during POST takes you to a screen which allows you to select the boot device (i.e. one time boot for the current bootup, presumably)
