Delays in Reds on DVD, artifacting on Pans & Push ins.

This may be a combined Compressor and DVD Studio Pro issue. I am experiencing delays in video, just in the bright reds of the short I am exporting to DVD. I am working in uncompressed 10 bit in FCP, and am using compressor at the 60 min high quality setting to create MPEG2 and aiff files. At first I thought it might be a sort of color correction issue, but I've checked the sequence and everything is broadcast safe. I've had this same type of issue before, where the quality of the video starts to go in and out of focus when the video has to deal with a very busy complicated pan, or truck in shot (in this case, sometimes artifacting occurs.) I thought that it may be a compression issue. But this is the first time I've had problems with just a certain color being delayed. I have tried thing like placing compression markers in these areas, but after exporting, the video always looks worse.
Any thoughts in this area? I've resorted to compressing just portions of the video separately and stitching it together in DVD Studio Pro. This is a time consuming and lengthy process, and it does help sometimes, but not all the time. Does anyone have a better solution to this problem?
Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help.

First off, thanks to everyone for all your great suggestions.
Agreed that the material was compressed to begin with. (Begin rant)...I'm amazed that so many people have a finished DVD they've spent hundreds on, yet apparently have no access to source material or even assets. No matter how I try to explain why the finished product won't look as good as what they gave me, the response is "it's DVD--DVD always looks great. Why can't you make it look great?" (end of rant, thanks...)
I'm on a PPC running Final Cut Studio 1 (so ProRes is unavailable to me). I took the footage to another system (Intel dual-core running FCS 3), used ProResLT, and to tell you the truth, I didn't see any noticeable difference--fade ups/downs are jerky, jagged lines between light & dark areas, etc. I'm also playing them back on both Sony and JVC broadcast monitors. I did some research on past threads, and downloaded and used JES Deinterlacer--no change. Even untrained eyes notice the problems.
I guess I was looking for someone who had had the same issue, and had a silver bullet to share with me. I've been on this for two days now, and my options are drying up. If I do succeed, somehow, I'll report back on what I did.
Thanks again.

    Can anyone explain why my USB super drive will not play RedBox DVDs?

    What Mac are you using with the USB SuperDrive?
    Is this USB SuperDrive a third party drive or Apple's USB SuperDrive?
    If this optical drive is Apple's own external USB SuperDrive, this only works with newer Macs that have no built-in optical drive any longer and WILL NOT work with older Macs that came with built-in optical drives.

  • Footage shot in HD has square edge artifacts on panning motion

    I shot my footage on Sony HVR Z7U at 1080i and edited using  (premiere CS3) . The footage looks good in Premiere and on my camera so I assume it is in the rendering. I use frame serve debugger to Encore and the panning shots or action side to side has square, rectangular artifacts on edge of moving person or object. Any suggestions would be appreciated

    Dont use encore. If your encoding to mpeg2, try CCE, which you can frameserve to.

  • Chapter markers cause a transition delay or pause in DVD

    No matter where I place my chapter markers on DVD Studio Pro 4– for I've been advised NOT to put them where assets join together– when I burn to disc there is always a pause at each chapter marker during playback. How do you resolve this problem?

    As Eric said - you don't need to add any commands at all - the disc will play through the chapter end point and start the next chapter automatically. Any command you place there will take a short amount of time to be 'read' by the player and enacted, and this is what is causing your pauses. Remove all commands from the chapter markers and you should be good to go.

  • Help! DVD loses sync after pushing pause.

    This is happeneing on every disc I burn! Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi
    a. iDVD only cares about time. Time = Movie + Menu duration. Menu can easily be 15 minutes or even more.
    b. Time limits in iDVD for SL-DVDs are 60 rep. 120 minutes in total. About x2 for DL-DVDs
    iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (vers 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1)
       iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    About double on DL DVDs.
    c. How do You go from FinalCut to iDVD - I do (see my notes)
    FCE/P to iDVD
    Several things
    • How to go from FCE/P to iDVD
    • Free space on Start-up hard disk
    • Encoding
    • Brand and type of DVDs used
    • Burn speed set
    • iDVD BUG
    • Chapters
    How to go from FCE/P to iDVD I do
    • Disable Screen and Energy saver
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu / Render Only / Mixdown
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Select with Mark - Chapter Mark
    • Not as Self-Contained (not important but saves time and space)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (IMPORTANT)
    This QT.mov file I import into iDVD from within iDVD.
    Free space on Start-up hard disk
    I set a minimum of 25GB (for Mac OS and iDVDs temp files)
    Encoding
    • I use Pro Quality encoding
    Brand and type of DVDs used
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R
    Burn speed set
    • I set it down to x4 (or x1)
    iDVD BUG
    • One can not go back to movie-project for any alterations and then go back to
    the iDVD project. It will notice and ask You to either Up-date or Cancel. Neither
    of them will work.
    Medicine - Start a brand new iDVD project.
    Use of Chapters
    • I only use a to z and 0 to 9 in naming them. NO other symbol/letter !
    • NO Chapter-mark at very beginning - iDVD NEEDS TO set this by it stlf
    • No Chapter marks in or within two seconds from a transition
    (Way around this last one - Export movie as QT full quality and NO Chapter marks
    Import this into a new Movie-project and now You are free to set C-Ms where You want
    them except at very beginning - still)
    Material used to build movie
    • video - I use streamingDV (or convert all other to this eg .mp4, .avi, .wmv etc)
    • audio - I use .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or from Audio-CD (44.1kHz) - no .mp3 or direct from iTunes
    • photos - I use .jpg - no .bmp etc
    Trash iDVD pref file and run Repair Permissions - and have a re-try.
    from post ??
    May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screensaving

  • Red artifact blob shows up in the middle of my screen when there are dark colours showing

    Does anyone know what this is? Or why it is happening? There is a red blob-ish artifact that is on the middle of my screen and you can notice it when there are dark colours on the screen. It's really annoying when I'm trying to watch movies or play games that have dark scenes. (The picture quality isn't that great, but you can kinda see the red blob I'm talking about.)
    Any thoughts?

    I'm having the same problem. Only noticed it after installing OS X Lion.

  • Red lines & plaid on cinema display when watching DVDs

    I bought a MacBook Pro & cinema display in November. The computer's working perfectly but when I watch DVDs on the cinema display, red lines will occasionally flicker horizontally across the screen while the DVD otherwise continues to play normally. After about 10 seconds of this, the screen stops showing the red-lined DVD footage and shows a plaid patchwork instead. Moving the mouse causes a white vertical line to move through the plaid. Turning off the cinema display and letting it rest for a few seconds returns it to functioning normally. The sound works normally throughout. The plaid is primarily lavender and white in color, neither of which colors are prominent either in the DVD imagery or my desktop.
    This only happens when I'm using DVD Player, either in fullscreen or windowed mode, and only on the cinema display, not the MacBook Pro's display. I've used the cinema display for 12+ hours at a time with Final Cut Pro (under 10.5.1), Maya (under Bootcamp, with XP), and Rhino (under Parallels), and have never once had this problem. But if I spend more than an hour watching a DVD, I'll experience it at least once.
    I've read about electro-static discharge, but that shouldn't be the cause because I've only connected the display to the computer twice, and both times I followed the connection instructions very carefully. I can't find any mention of this problem on this site, but I wanted to ask if anyone had any ideas before I drag the thing and my CD full of photos into an Apple store for them to look at. I'd be thrilled if anyone can give me miraculous solutions, but I'd also appreciate it if you could even confirm that this is probably just a weird hardware problem that replacing the display would fix and that the fact that it only occurs when I'm using DVD Player is irrelevant.
    Thanks.

    I also have a 30" ACD and I'm experiencing exactly the same problems as you describe, but not only in DVD Player, but as long as the background is black it's possible to see the red lines here and there on the screen. Very, very annoying and it doesn't give me a professional impression of the monitor I so deeply love.
    Is this a hardware problem that can be fixed, or should I ask for a new monitor?

  • Is there an easy way to pan and zoom still slides in PE4?

    Either i'm totally stupid, or why is it so hard to pan and zoom still slides in PE4?
    I'm trying to create a slide show in PE4, and i want to pan and zoom on each slide -- nothing overly fancy, but i want to control where the beginning and end point is for each zoom. It's really easy to do this in PSE 6 -- it shows you green and red boxes for where the pans/zooms begin and end and you can just grab the boundaries and change them. in PE 4, it seems you have to use presets (which are only pans OR zooms) or resort to Keyframes which are very complicated and VERY POORLY explained in the Adobe PE4/PSE6 classroom in a book.
    Is there an easy way to do pans and zooms without being a rocket scientist?

    Eric,
    The ability to use Keyframing in infinitely powerful. However, with that power comes some hand-work.
    However, once one has their head around the concept of Keyframing, the mechanics of it, plus the options, it becomes easy and second nature. It's getting to that point, that requires a bit of work and practice. I second Steve's tip link, as a great place to start. Once you become comfortable with the power, you'll likely never go back to any form of "Random Pan & Zoom."
    Now, the work that I do is usually very tightly scripted. Each "move" depends on the exact subject and what I, or the director, want at that moment, with that image. I often have this part figured out, before I re-size the images for Import. If I need more Pan, then I'll go a bit larger. Less Pan and I'll get it right at the DVD frame size (720x480 PAR 0.9, in my case).
    Learning which Panels to have open, and when, will go a long way to making the experience easier and more enjoyable, so setting up one's Workspace is very important. Big, honking monitors also make the editing experience more pleasant.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • How to drag and drop tab nodes between tab panes

    I'm working on example from this tutorial( Drag-and-Drop Feature in JavaFX Applications | JavaFX 2 Tutorials and Documentation ). Based on the tutorial I want to drag tabs between two tabs. So far I managed to create this code but I need some help in order to finish the code.
    Source
    tabPane = new TabPane();
    Tab tabA = new Tab();
       Label tabALabel = new Label("Main Component");
    tabPane.setOnDragDetected(new EventHandler<MouseEvent>()
                @Override
                public void handle(MouseEvent event)
                    /* drag was detected, start drag-and-drop gesture*/
                    System.out.println("onDragDetected");
                    /* allow any transfer mode */
                    Dragboard db = tabPane.startDragAndDrop(TransferMode.ANY);
                    /* put a string on dragboard */
                    ClipboardContent content = new ClipboardContent();
                    content.put(DataFormat.PLAIN_TEXT, tabPane);
                    db.setContent(content);
                    event.consume();
    What is the proper way to insert the content of the tab as object? Into the tutorial simple text is transferred. How I must modify this line content.put(DataFormat.PLAIN_TEXT, tabPane);?
    And what is the proper way to insert the tab after I drag the tab:
    Destination
    tabPane.setOnDragDropped(new EventHandler<DragEvent>()
                @Override
                public void handle(DragEvent event)
                    /* data dropped */
                    /* if there is a string data on dragboard, read it and use it */
                    Dragboard db = event.getDragboard();
                    boolean success = false;
                    if (db.hasString())
                        //tabPane.setText(db.getString());
                        Tab tabC = new Tab();
                        tabPane.getTabs().add(tabC);
                        success = true;
                    /* let the source know whether the string was successfully
                     * transferred and used */
                    event.setDropCompleted(success);
                    event.consume();
    I suppose that this transfer can be accomplished?
    Ref javafx 2 - How to drag and drop tab nodes between tab panes - Stack Overflow

    I would use a graphic (instead of text) for the Tabs and call setOnDragDetected on that graphic. That way you know which tab is being dragged. There's no nice way to put the Tab itself into the dragboard as it's not serializable (see https://javafx-jira.kenai.com/browse/RT-29082), so you probably just want to store the tab currently being dragged in a property.
    Here's a quick example; it just adds the tab to the end of the current tabs in the dropped pane. If you wanted to insert it into the nearest location to the actual drop you could probably iterate through the tabs and figure the coordinates of each tab's graphic, or something.

  • Video/Sound delay with AppleTV on higher resolutions

    I have a new Sony 55" RP SXRD HD TV (1080p max res), and just hooked up my AppleTV today. After syncing it with most of my video library and some of my music library, I tested the video appearance. My initial setting was 1080i, and I experienced major video/sound synchronization delays (similar to older DVD players where you'd hear what the person was saying 5-8 seconds before they said it on screen). This drove me nuts, so I switched down to 720p res, and while the movies played okay, the TV Shows and the Music Videos left much to be desired, and still had the same synchronization problems. To remove these issues, I finally changed the res down to 420p, but now, when I watch pretty much anything (photos, album art, TV Shows, Music Videos, and Movies), the resolution is horrible, and pixelates on my TV.
    I'm trying to pinpoint this to find out if it's the TV, the connection (HDMI), or the AppleTV. Can anyone offer some advice on what to look for, what might cause this issue, and how I could fix it? Thanks so much in advance!
    AppleTV   Windows XP
      Windows XP

    Sounds to me like it's a problem with upscaler. Does the Apple TV upscale? If it does, then it's the upscaler in the Apple TV and is probably a software problem that can be fixed with a firmware update. But it's weird that if it's a consistent problem with the Apple TV upscaler that these forums aren't just soaked in complaints about it. Could be only a problem with really large, say 46" or greater TVs -- that might explain the low number of complaints.
    If the Apple TV doesn't upscale, then it's the upscaler in your HDTV. Prior to about six months ago, when all HDTVs got good upscaler chipsets, some HDTVs, especially the older, larger models, had absolute trash upscaler chipsets -- even the expensive quality brand models got some bad upscalers. All kinds of problems from all input sources, but not always with every device. How old is your HDTV?
    For your sake, I hope it's an Apple TV upscaler problem with larger dimensioned HDTVs, as that Apple can fix for free with a firmware update. Next best choice is your terrible upscaler chipset in your HDTV supports firmware upgrades via USB or network cable and there is a firmware update out that fixes your HDTV's upscaler problems. Because the final, worst alternative, if there is no update for your HDTV available, or your model doesn't support firmware updates, it's the really bad option: drop another couple grand or more for a new HDTV of the same large dimensions.

  • HD DVD movies

    Has anyone out there burned a DVD in H.264 and tryed it on the Samsung Blu ray or Toshiba HD-DVD player?
    I am interested in anyones findings as there seems to be conflicting news on this.

    The initial Toshiba HD DVDs players played red dye DVDs created in DVD SP under these conditions:
    1. aiff audio
    2. mpeg2 (not h.264) encoding
    3. no menus, just tracks.
    Given that DVD SP only encodes to HD DVDs, the Samsung BluRay players did not see a disc.
    Toshibas upgrade to v.2 firmware apparently do not play the HD DVDs encoded as above any more

  • Can Final Cut Studio 2 make Blu-Ray DVDs

    I have Final Cut Studio 2 on a mac book pro. I am not sure whether this topic belongs in compressor or dvd studio, but does the HD DVD mean it is HD DVD Format or a DVD that is high definition. So, in other words, can I do Blu-Ray also.

    DVD Studio Pro 4.2 (in Final Cut Studio 2) has not yet had an update that allows creating and burning a blu-ray project.
    You can create a basic HD DVD (yes it is a format) project and burn to a normal Standard Definition (red laser) DVD.
    This plays on Mac computers only and certain Toshiba HD DVD set top players.
    (see here for the "how to" )

    We're stilll waiting for Apple to update DVD Studio Pro to enable blu-ray support.
    So, no, you can't make blu-ray video projects on your MacBook Pro...yet.
    You can only burn data discs should you buy a blu-ray burner.
    For a closer examination of what's similar, and what's different between the two fomats, have a look here:
