Delete a disk partition

I installed Boot Camp while I was working at Microsoft, but now no longer need it.
Is there a way to safely remove a disk partition so that the whole hard drive is available for the Mac OS?

Run the BootCamp utility - there's an option to delete the partition it created when you first set up Windows with BootCamp.

Deleting VMware fusion disk partition

My HD has only a small amount of free space. 7GB. I am trying to improve things by removing VMware fusion which I haven't used for years. I think uninstalling the program will be easy. I am having trouble removing the disk partition which should free up 15GB for me.
FYI it is VMware fusion 2.0.8.
I removed the virtual machine from the library in VMware, but I believe the partition is still there.
I have located the partition via these instructions:

According to these instructions I drag the file I located in finder to the trash and that will delete the partition. Is that correct?

I'm assuming you do not have an actual partition, but rather a container file stored under either your Documents folder or your home folder -> Library folder.
The VMware Fusion app should preferences should be able to tell you where that container file is located.
You could also try using the free OmniDiskSweeper utility (Google it). Just do not delete things you do not understand, as OmniDiskSweeper can show you essential system files you have never seen before and might think are unnecessary. If unsure, you can always ask if it OK to delete files you are unsure of.

Delete disk partition

i have a macbook with 10.4. right now i have 2 partition, one that has xp on it that does not work. I want to delete the xp partition. i dont care about having to reinstall tiger. unfortunately i dont know how to work the disk utility. could someone please give me some steps to follow or post a link. thanks for any help

I take it you don't have the Boot Camp Beta software which is what you could use to remove the Windows partition. Otherwise you will have to repartition the drive which will erase everything. If this is what you must do, then see the following:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.

".. recovery disks do not support this computer.." and I deleted my recovery partition

So I dutiful created Recovery Disks, a set of 4 DVDs. I than resized my Windows 7 partition and deleted the Recovery Partition; to make room for Ubuntu. I want to recover my laptop to original install using the Recovery Disk set.
My laptop boots from the Recovery Disk and reports:
"The system recovery disks do not support this computer. You are not able to restore this system with these disks."
My system is stock:
HP Pavilion dv4 Notebook PC
BIOS F.0C - 3/30/2010
This will teach me not to buy original Windows OS CDs!

I don`t know if this will help you ,but if you have had your system board replaced your original recovery disks won`t work as they look for the serial number ex factory,as i had a similar problem,and ended up getting new disks from hp with my new serial number from the bios.Hope this helps.

Restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. All of the original partitions will be restored, including the recovery partition.
If no recovery discs were created, you can obtain them from Toshiba.

I have a Bootcamp partition on my Imac with Mavericks which I can't delete because the Partition Layout in Disk Utility is greyed out and is stuck on 'Current'. What can I do? I was trying to install Windows 8.1 but apparently, this is not yet possible.
I was originally able to restore to my original Mac OSX partition using Boot Camp Assistant but then after entering Disk Utility and re-RAIDing the default RAID 1 to RAID 0 in the BootCamp partition (I suspect this is the cause of the problem but why was it defaulted to RAID 1 in the first place?!!!!), forever afterwards, I couldn't restore the single OSX partition.
Whenever I used BootCamp Assistant my choice to 'Install or remove Windows 7 or later version' was greyed out. Finally I went to Disk Utility to repartition but the Macintosh HD and BootCamp disk partition functions were also greyed out (even if I started up from Recovery mode holding down option, command and 'R' and choosing Disk Utility). BootCamp Assistant gives the error message 'The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition' with additional small script 'The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows', and DU gives the error message 'The full size of the Fusion drive is not available for repartitioning'.
What can I do to fix this problem? How can I make the Partition Layout button active in DU so I can change the partition to all OSX? I'm prepared to wipe off all my data etc to repartition and have backed up all to disk using Time Machine.

My problem is fixed now, thank you. It was caused by my changing the Boot Camp partition's 'RAID1' to 'RAID0'. If I hadn't done that, Boot Camp would still have been able to 'restore' back to the one partition. It was fixed with the help of Applecare by using a terminal and typing a command to erase the IP of the Macintosh disk (not the volume) as well as the IP of the Bootcamp partition (if I remember correctly), but then I had to restore the OS and all my applications and data etc which I had previously backed up using Time Machine. I haven't taken note of the exact command terminology used. It would be wise to speak to Applecare about this if possible.
Two words of warning, 1. According to the cause of this problem, it might be wise, after reinstalling the ops system to reinstall all extra applications one by one, manually, in case a similar problem arises again. Then manually copy back all data. Or the Mac user could use the Time Machine backup and then uninstall all the added apps then re-install them one by one manually. 2. Beware as after all this the user might not have the 'Recovery partition'. There is a small recovery partition (a few 100 Mb is size) which comes with all later Macs. After all this is done this tiny partition might not be there anymore and the user might have to re-install Mavericks again to get it back, or just install the upcoming update of Mavericks due in a month or so.

After errors with disk partition, I removed Windows from my iMac. Now when I start my computer it goes into a black screen and not straight into the Mac area like it used to, unless I hold Alt straight away to give me the option. Any help?

Sorry, I'm new to the community, so apologies if I'm repeating myself.
OK, so I tried to install Windows Vista onto my iMac with the disk partition. Everything was going fine and it wasn't until last minute, when it was installed that an error came up saying that this can only be done with Windows 7. After this error, I couldn't access any errors of my iMac and when I shut down and restarted my computer, it automatically logged into Windows.
So after a panic, I rang Apple Care and the lady helped me log into my apple area, delete Windows from my iMac, and all was restored.
However, now when I shut down my computer and boot it back up, I think my iMac is trying to log into Windows areas that no longer exist. It loads up a black screen and doesn't move from there. To log into my Apple area, I have to do the whole process of holding Alt immediately after I switch the power on and access the Mac drive and log in that way.
It's beginning to become a real pain and I'm paranoid this process is going to damage my computer. Any advice on how to restore logging-in back to it's former glory when I first purchased it?

I have a mac book pro with Boot Camp that also runs windows. I upgraded to Lion and somehow it crashes the mac side peridoically. I am told I need to "clean" it and reinstall lion using the recovery drive. will that delete the windows partition too??

I have a mac book pro with Boot Camp that also runs windows. I upgraded to Lion and now the mac side crashes/freezes periodically, especially iphoto. I am told by the genius' that I probably need to "clean" it and reinstall lion using the "recovery drive" which resets everything back to default and reinstalls the lion operating system. My question is will this also delete the "windows" partition drive and all that data too. If so that will be a huge pain in the ___ to back up and reinstall boot camp and windows. I want to shoot the lion.

There is no system like Acronis for the Mac platform. You can try using the buiilt in Disk Utility to create an Image of the complete Mac drive but I have found that this does not work very well as on tryiing to restore it gives errors sometimes.
You can use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable Clone of your system partition. But that is only for the System partition and not the complete drive.
If you use Boot Camp to install Windows on your Mac neither of those two programs will clone the Windows side.
Neither will Disk utility as Mac's can not create or write to a NTFS partition. So some other program is need for that.

Guys! I'm new to OS X and not used to it so I tried installing Windows 7 having the thought that it's as easy as on ordinary laptops. Installation was succesfull, Installed it by first going to a "boot utility like" screen while it's still on OS X, Deleted all those partitions, Placed a Windows 7 disc in the disc drive and on the Windows installation menu I also deleted the partiotions I saw. After all that my MacBook successfuly is running Windows 7 but problems appeared like no backlight on the keyboard, Trackpad is no longger functioning well and the audio jack has this f*cking red light. :'( I admit this is all my fault and I really need to find a solution to get it running on OS X again. Please help!!! Sorry for my bad english... And also, While booting up, There is no more Apple logo but a silver screen then Windows...

A partition is just a section of the disk set aside for a particular purpose. In this case, we're talking about a Mac partition and a Windows partition. They have different formats, which is how the data is stored. The disks that came with your Mac will create the Mac partition when you install, but most likely you'll lose the Windows partition. You've got kind of a mess at this point. What you should do is install the Mac OS and get everything as you want it. Then run Bootcamp to create a Windows partition and let Bootcamp do the Windows installation for you. Grant gave you good advice earlier. Don't let Windows do any partitioning. That's how you got into this mess.

Recover Deleted Boot Camp Partition

A week ago I tried to delete Ubuntu from my Windows 8 Boot Camp partition on my MacBook. However, after the process I couldn't boot Mavericks anymore. When I finally got Mavericks to boot, my Windows partition became unbootable. After running the repair disk, I accidentally ran the "clean" command using Diskpart and COMPLETELY wiped my computer of everything - even my Mac OS X partition. The only way I could get my computer to become usable again was to add a partition using the Internet Recovery Disk Utility tools (there were 0 partitions) and fresh-install Lion.
However, I had all of my important files and apps on my Windows partition and my last backup of it (using Winclone) was outdated. I am not very familiar with this sort of situation, so I was hoping for some help. Currently, I have not attempted to add another Boot Camp partition, but I'm not sure if adding the Lion partition (to make my Mac usable) would make the Windows partition unrecoverable. Also, should I update to Mavericks and then take further action?
I would sincerely appreciate it if I could receive some assistance.

I've found the NTFS partition with the right size capacity, 136 GB. However, when I press "p" to list files, the only directory folders that show up are .Trashes and System Volume Information. The partition also appears to be resized (it may have accidentally happened?) because its size is shown as 146 GB/136 GB.
How would I restore the NTFS partition so that I could fix it with a utility (because I think it's been accidentally resized)? As I'd said above, I deleted my Mac partition too and I had to install a new Lion partition. However, this new Lion partition takes up all of the partition space because there is currently only one, so would I have to re-partition it before I can restore the Windows partition?

I accidentally deleted my windows partition

I had created a 100GB partition for windows on my 500GB hard disk from BootCamp and accidentally deleted the windows partition and I've got that 100GB free that I cannot use anymore. The partition cannot be resized and that's it. Please suggest a way in which I can get rid of that free space and resize my hard disk without losing ant data.

I know it is a little bit late to reply. But, I still want to share my experiences with everyone here.
Actually, I have ever also has the same issue and needed to resize my C drive partition for much more partition space. But, the resizing process just unexpectedly fails at last in Disk Management. The “extend” function is unable to work.
So, I have no choice but to take chances with some third party partition resizing tools:

Both of them seem efficient. So, I just have tried them one by one and finally added wanted free space to my C drive successfully.

Problem with partition after deleting a bootcamp partition

First, excuse my english, I'm from France.
This morning, I've deleted the bootcamp partition I had created weeks ago. But when I've tried to extend the principal partition on the empty space left by bootcamp, the Disk Utilitaire says : "Partition failed : impossible to modify the partition map because the verification of the files system failed."
I tried to extend the partition with the hided partition that we use when we can't boot on the main partition (I don't know how to say its name in english).
If someone have a solution, it would be cool !

Back everything up (preferably twice, 3 times for the really paranoid). I would use Carbon Copy Cloner and/or SuperDuper to make bootable clones to external disks.
Test the clone(s) by booting from them.
Repartition the boot disk the way you want it.
Restore your cloned system from the external disk.

Not able to extend the disk partition in our server 2008

Hi all,
extend the partition but t it not able to do that.We are using the windows server 2008 in our setup. one of my exchange server I want to extend the partition. I had already extend the partition but now its not able to do that and shows the below error.
in the diskmangement view I can see the partition in splitted format when ever I previously extended it shows the same( I extended 3, 4 times). is it ok to delete the Splitted partition?

When the unallocated space is not behind the assigned partition, you cannot directly extend your wanted partition in Disk Management. That may be why you’ve failed at first.
But, without using disk management tools, you also can try to extend your partition with partition resizing software within several steps.
