Hi,
I updated my iOS from iOS 6.0.1 to the latest version (6.1). Before the update, I made a backup to keep my information. My iPhone 4S was almost full. After downloading the new version the size of the iOS 6.1 + my backup is greater than the capacity of my phone. Is there a way to access and then delete a part of the backup (e.g. some photos or videos)? This can help to not lose my important stuffs.

Copy your existing backup folder to your desktop first. One mistake & you'll make the entire backup unusable.

Deleting unwanted part of Simple Save backup

Hi,
I am using Simple Save to backup my system disk(with user files and several external portable disks. I have recently installed a new system/data disk. During this process, some disks changed their drive letter. Simple Save has added data from these disks to the backup. I now want to tidy up the backups and reclaim the space used. How do I remove these backups from the master backup without deleting the entire backup or reformatting the Simple Save disk?

It's not possible to delete a datafile from a backup that has already been created. That would require rewriting the backup pieces (a datafile may span more than one backuppiece), updating the catalog in the controlfile and updating the catalog schema. Rewriting the backup pieces would be the biggest job -- multiple datafiles may be interleaved in the same backup pieces.
You'd have to wait for the backup to become obsolete (according to your retention policy) and then delete the obsolete backup in it's entirety.

You would have to restore you device as if new. If you restore a backup then you simply bring back the issue. However, it's normal to have an Other shown, but it should not be excessively large - under 2 or 3 GBs on an iPhone 4S, I believe.

Firefox does not delete the .part file from my download folder after a successful download

First off, I'm on a MacBook Pro, running 10.6.4 and FF3.6.12
I've recently noticed that on occasion Firefox does not seem to delete the .part file associated with a successful download. The .part file (with a name consisting of a string of random characters followed by a .part extension) is visible in my Download folder stack, although not visible in the actual folder view. I cannot drag this file from the stack to the trash.
The real problem stems from the fact that this seems to create a directory error on my hard drive. Were I to run Disk Utility (which I will have to do... again!), it would return with an error saying something like "incorrect block length", requiring me to boot up from my install disk and repair the drive.
Is this maybe a bug? Is there something I might be doing wrong? Could an extension like AdBlock be messing up my downloads?

It seems that FireFox leaves those partial download files if for any reason they get interrupted. It's possible to resume the download through various uninteresting means, but if you're like me, it gets filled up with files that I intentionally did not complete downloading.
If you're terminal-savvy, you can set up a script that cleans up old .part files. Here's what I've set in my crontab:
0 * * * * /usr/bin/find ~/Downloads/*.part -atime +1 -exec rm {} \; &> /dev/null
It will delete any files in my downloads folder that are at least 1 day old.
To install this in your crontab, launch terminal and type "crontab -e"
This will bring up a text editor, probably vi. You'll see a bunch of ~'s down the left side. Type "i" to go into "insert" mode. The bottom left will say "-- INSERT --"
Copy and paste (or type) the line of code I have above.
Hit enter just to make sure you have a newline at the end.
Hit "Escape" to exit the insert mode.
Hit Shift-Z Shift-Z (that's Shift-Z twice) to exit the editor.
You should see a status message "crontab: installing new crontab"
If you type "crontab -l" you should see your newly installed crontab.
At the top of the next hour, any .part files that are more than a day old should be deleted, and this should continue forever.

How can I delete an infected file from backup folders

ran Sophos anti-virus recently and it told me I have a malicious trojan on my Mac, Mal/PDFEx-H (which supposedly only affects windows, but it turned up anyway.) Sophos couldn't remove it automatically, so I was instructed to do a manual removal; however, every time I try to delete the file from the backup folders in which it is located, I get a message that "backup files can't be altered."
so, my question is: how do I get rid of some malicious trojan (even though it's only for windows) from my backup folders? Btw, the backup folders in which it is located are all over 2 years old...don't know if that makes any difference, like maybe the entire folders could be deleted without any adverse effects?

I think that Linc means (and I concur) you don't need it to protect your Mac and it wastes resources, if it makes you feel better because it alerts you to windows viruses then remove it and install ClamAX or AV or whetever it's called.
But you don't need AV software.

How (or where in the manual are the instr) l) do i delete a part of a clip and rejoin the audio on each side. This is most frustrating. The join command is never available. If i select an area to delete everything above and below is deleted, whether or not its selected and whether or not its mute. I find in the manual only ways to move entire clips. I need to remove 2 words from a clip in one track.

i'm assuming your working in the multi-track mode since you didn't specify. select the razor blade tool and make two cuts to the audio, one where you want the cut to start, the other where you want the cut to end. select this smaller region that you want to delete and press the delete key.
now you'll have a gap of silence where that unwanted clip was. select the clip(s) to the right of the cut and drag them left. the default behavior is to do a cross fade when the clips overlap. you'll probably have to play with the cross fade amount in order to get it to sound natural.

I just bought a new iMac and am giving my Mac Book Pro to my daughter. I deleted many of the applications and files on the Mac Book Pro. Can I go into the Time Capsule and delete the Mac Book Pro backup then have Time Machine backup so I get a fresh back up?

Yes, you can.
However, it will be much, much easier if you simply erase the Time Capsule disk rather than try to delete the MacBook Pro backup....which will take hours. The erase procedure will only take a few minutes in contrast.
This assumes that you do not have backups from other Macs on the Time Capsule.....which will also be wiped clean if you erase the Time Capsule disk.

You can do it by manually delete the backups and archivelogs from OS location. Then use below commands
RMAN>crosscheck backup;
It will give status as EXPIRED for backups which are valid but not available at OS level.
RMAN>delete expired backup;
Delete all the backups whose status are EXPIRED from database level.
Similarly for archivelogs
RMAN>crosscheck archivelog all;
RMAN>delete expired archivelog all;

I made a Icloud back up two days ago. I have text messaged and sent emails since. I haven't backed up again yet and I was wondering that if I erase my phone and back up to that Icloud Back up made two days ago, the texts and emails I have sent SINCE then will be permanently deleted? AKA they can never be found again by anyone?

That is correct you can only get back data that was backed up.

I have an Iphone 3gs. I desperately need to recover deleted text messages from it. I have never synched my phone to itunes, "automatically synch to itunes" has always been unchecked. If the backup is made after the messages were deleted, then you won't be able to get them back via an iTunes restore. However, you may be able to use a third-party program to look at the backup made after the messages were deleted and see what information about those messages is recoverable.
One program, the one I work on, is called Decipher TextMessage. Our software will scan the text-message database and show you what information (whole and incomplete) was found that has been previously deleted. We've had a lot of success helping folks recover their deleted text messages -- it doesn't always work 100% since we're at the mercy of how the database works but it's worth a shot to see what you can find!
