  • Do you have to delete current (CS6) Illustrator preferences on Mac Os X?

    I have recently purchased the Adobe Illustrator CS6 program & Adobe CS6 Classroom in a Book. I am familiar with the Adobe InDesign & Adobe Photoshop programs, but I have never had to restore/delete default preferences.
    I was able to locate the Adobe Illustrator Prefs- [startup drive]/Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator CS6 Settings/en_US -yet I become confused from there. The en_US is a folder, yet the book is saying that it is a file that I'm supposed to be working with. When I click on the en_US folder, I am brought to many more files & folders, one saying "Adobe Illustrator Prefs" (which is a square icon that says "PREFS" in brown & gold).
    My question is; am I supposed to copy & save the file that says "Adobe Illustrator Prefs" into another folder on my hard disk, or am I supposed to copy & save the folder "en_US" into another frolder on my hard disk?
    Also, when deleting the current Illustrator preferences, do I delete the new folder I have to create, or do i delete the file that is already in my library? Is there an easier way of doing this?
    Explaining in detail would be much appreciated!
    Thank you very much in advance,
    Alysia

    Alysia,
    I believe it makes good sense to save a copy of the whole folder with the preferences, for 4 to 6 reasons (even if some may disagree with 2) and 3), there will still be 1), 4), 5), and 6) left; actually 6) would seem to be enough in itself):
    1) Preference corruption is something that occurs with a certain (low) probability, in connexion with the saving of them when you close down Illy, or while Illy is open; in other words there is (at least) one occasion where the preferences may have become corrupted every time you have closed down Illy;
    2) The complexity of the combination of all the elements involved in closing down an application (Illy) is likely to increase the probability of saving errors as compared with a simple saving;
    3) The probability may be quite different from user to user; discussions about this subject long ago, in the days of the fair forums (where there were two Illy forums) seemed to arrive at the conclusion that the probability, at least to a large degree is determined by the error frequency of the OS and/or hardware; this error frequency is most likely to increase with time;
    4) Any corruption anywhere within the preferences may require your resetting some or all preferences;
    5) You may encounter issues where it is uncertain whether the solution is your resetting some or all of the preferences, but there is only one way to find out.
    6) If you save a copy of the preferences and a) never need to use it or b) need to use it because you have lost the preferences (anyway), either way there is no harm done.
    You may compare the probability of successfully saving of a correct copy of the preferences with Illy closed ONCE and the probability of successfully saving of correct preferences in the complex of procedures EVERY TIME you use and close down Illy.
    If you ignore 2) and 3) and presume the same probability by doing either ONCE and call that success probability P, the success probability will be P multiplied by itself as many times as the preferences are saved, also expressed as P^N (the Nth power of P), when saved N times.
    The probability of getting a correct copy of the preferences is P, whereas the probability of keeping the preferences correct after using Illy N times is P^N.
    With a success probability of 0.999 (failure 1:1000), and using Illy 1.000 times (about once a day for about three years), you will have 0.999 and 0.37, in other words 0.1% probability of failure by saving a copy and 63% probability of failure by using Illy; in other words, a factor of 630:1.
    With a success probability of 0.9999 (failure 1:10.000), and using Illy 1.000 times (about once a day for about three years), you will have 0.9999 and 0.99, in other words 0.01% probability of failure by saving a copy and 1% probability of failure by using Illy; in other words, a factor of 100:1.
    Obviously, 2) and 3) point to a higher probability of ending with correct (copy) preferences by a simple saving outside Illy ONCE than that resulting from using and closing Illy ONCE, which changes the figures in favour of saving a copy, and 3) points to a possibly increased change caused by ageing.
    In any case, it hurts to lose the preferences, not least if needleesly done; this shows the strength of 6).
    It should be noted that if you encounter 5), you may move the preferences rather than just deleting them, as mentioned in  Move the folder, thereby avoiding your having to sacrifice the preferences without knowing whether it is necessary; with a(n older) copy you will have two ways of recovering them.

  • DELETED printer from system preferences

    Mistakenly I deleted my printer (Konica Minolta Magicolor 2530DL) from my system preferences... I didn't have created a back up file from "Time Machine" application... I tried to reinstalling the drivers but system shows me the message: "you can't install this driver... already installed in your computer", however, System preferences does NOT show the printer in the list.... how can I restore the printer? (I already tried checking for the deleted files in the "trash" but I couldn't find them) somebody en light me please.

    Thank you Baltwo... I did what you instructed me... went to system preferences... opened the printers/fax option... then on the window pressed ctrl + click ... the message "reset printing system..." pop up... then I named the printer queue as "Konica Minolta Magicolor 2530 DL"... and added the software from the list... the printer's name now is in the system preferences... when I open an application and send a printer test, the queue appears... however, the printer DOES NOT print... I don't know... did I something wrong?... please answer.

  • Delete Current (CS6) Illustrator Preferences on Mac OS X Lion

    I have been unsuccessful in locating the Adobe Illustrator Preferences file on my computer.  I am working my way through the lessons in Classroom In a Book for Illustrator, and you are asked to delete the current preferences prior to starting each lesson (this ensures the panels, etc, work in accordance with the text).  I use a Mac with Lion as my operating system and, as instructed, went to my Library folder to find the "Adobe Illustrator CS6 Settings/en_US" file, yet it is nowhere to be found.  I have saved files (which should result in the creation of a preference file) and closed and re-opened Illustrator.  Nothing seems to be working and/or produce the preference file.  Has anyone had any trouble with this?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Sarah

    Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Illustrator. Your current settings are deleted.

  • Accidently deleted accounts in System Preferences :{

    HELP!Can't seem to undo my delete!
    Was trying to delete accounts of old users I bought Mac from in NetInfo Manager and now I can't access the administrator to be able to manage accounts, change password, parental settings etc.It LOOKED simple enough...What now? I called Apple Tech help and they suggested posting.
    Is it feasible to get it back the way it was?
    TR

    Follow the instructions in sections 1 and 2 of this article; if they don't work, follow the instructions in sections 1 and 3, and then create a new administrator account with a short name not previously used on the computer.

    Hi r,
    It sounds like you're running Lion?
    Have you tried running Verify and/or Repair Disk?
    Have you tried running Repair Permissions?

  • Deleting files out of system preferences desktop background.

    Does anyone know how to delete files out of system preferences>desktop & screen saver?
    Some how when adding one photo to the file for the desktop background it took the entire photo file. So that instead of one photo for the file it has over 200 now. Read everything and tried everything. Still can't figure out how to delete that file from the list.
    I know how to add photos or whatever to use as desktop background just no idea how to remove them from the list.
    Any ideas?

    Doug,
    When you go to system preferences>desktop & screen savers>desktop. On the left is a window with the names of the images listed. Apple Images, Nature file, Plants file, Picture Folder, Choose Folder and so forth. The ones that come with Apple products. Not sure what all else is native to Apple.
    Iv been using my own desktop background since the day I got the iBook. Normally I just get one photo or image and more it there to use. But, last week I did something different or wrong. Maybe holding a button to long, not sure. Instead of moving the one photo it moved the entire photo file. That file had over 200 (2,500x1,800 in size & over 550KB for each) and probably closer to 250 photos in it.
    Way to many to be there. And I simply can't find a way to remove that file from the desktop list. I can high light it, but it doesn't delete with the delete button. I can high light it, but it doesn't change anything in system preferences banner to edit, view, etc....to remove it either. It won't click & drag to trash.
    Being very careful because I don't want to delete the file and by error delete it totally off the computer. I could creat a new file with only 1 photo in it for use as the desktop background. Then try to choose that file. However, since the last big OS-X update it's been doing this. Everytime I choose a file or photo it's adding the entire file not just the 1 photo. And Iv managed to add 3 files so far to that list.
    Any ideas? Thx, Mike

  • How to delete system preference on Mac Mini OS X 10.9.2

    I purchased a Plantronics Gamecom 780 headset awhile ago. I can hear through it just fine however the mic has huge amounts of static. I know the headset should work on Mac. Ive tested it on other computers and it works perfectly. I believe that its just a corrupt system preference file but I don't know how to find it and delete it on this computer. Before you say anything, yes I have unmuted it, Ive gone into system preferences and than sound to mess with it in there.

  • "Date and Time" freezes System Preferences - file to delete?

    Well, I've had her up and running for about eight hours now and only one problem... just checking all the settings in System Preferences and when I select "Date & Time" System Preferences stops responding.
    I migrated my 12" PB so there may have been a hinky file there - repairing permissions does nothing. Any .plist I might delete? The date and time are correct, by the way although, during set-up, the time & date pane just whizzed by, not giving me a chance to select.
    Any thoughts, system wizards?

    I have experienced the same problem. You can try deleting the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist, but that may not help. Be sure you have no menubar items running such as MenuMeters, iClock, etc. You might also try booting from the Installer Disc and running Disk Utility to repair the hard drive and permissions. Then do a shutdown for about five minutes before restarting. Upon restart clear PRAM by pressing and holding down the OPTION-COMMAND-P-R keys immediately after the chime and continue to hold them until you hear the restart chime another four times, then release and allow normal startup.
    Migrating from a PowerPC Mac can be problematic because of the possibility of getting third-party plug-ins, preference panes, menubar modifiers, etc. that can potentially cause problems.

  • HELP: System Preferences and Safari deleted

    my sister accidentally deleted System Preferences. It's no longer in the /applications folder and won't launch from the dock or the apple menu. Is there a downloadable installer for that coz I no longer have the osx install disc.
    the same thing happened with safari. My osx version was 10.5.4 so i installed 10.5.8 combo upgrade (700+ MB) thinking it would fix system prefs and safari but it didn't. I then tried installing Safari 4.0.1 but it said it's only for 10.5.7 -- ouch! So now i'm using Opera and Firefox.
    i'm a vet in Windows and a total noob with OSX... please help.

    my sister accidentally deleted System Preferences.
    Don't let her use an admin account from now on. Make her a separate account to use, and don't give it admin privileges.
    It's no longer in the /applications folder and won't launch from the dock or the apple menu.
    Have you tried searching? Maybe she just accidentally dragged it into a different folder. If Spotlight (the built-in search) can't find it, try downloading [EasyFind|http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware/index.html]. Spotlight won't search everywhere, EasyFind will (but slower).
    Is there a downloadable installer for that coz I no longer have the osx install disc.
    No, there isn't. You're going to need that install disk. Apple will replace it for a small fee if you can't find it.
    Once you have an appropriate disk, you can use [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com> to re-install specific things.
