Delete Archive folder in Mail?

I have two Macs on Yosemite. On one of them, I wanted to delete the Archive icon from the task bar, and I just removed it by dragging it out of the window.
On my Macbook Air, however, I can't get rid of the icon, and I can't delete the Archive mailbox.
What could be a difference between the two computers causing this inability to get rid of the Archive task bar icon or the Archive mailbox? I have no need for an Archive folder and I wanted deleted mail to go into a Trash folder.

I deleted the Archive folder, but it came back. I have no idea why it's there. I would like iit gone.

I accidentally deleted an Archive folder in MAIL, can i get it back ?, i have several Time Machine backups and also a Sooper Dooper backup, but where can i find the the Archive folder to give me a chance of RESTORING it.
I run Time Machine but that only lets me look in Finder for restoring files, if i knew where MAIL kept it's folders i would easily be able to restore it !.

  • Unwanted Archive folder in Mail 7.3 (in Mavericks)

Mail 7.3 (in Mavericks) added an Archive folder with 1500 messages in its Gmail (All Mail) subfolder. I have a Gmail account but never use it, and the Archived messages were never sent or received in Gmail. I deleted them from the Archive folder (but not from the other On My Mac folders, where I want to keep them), but they returned when I reopened Mail. Can I delete them from Archive so that they won't return?

    You're welcome.
You can suppress the display of the All Mail folder (in Mail) if you want. In Gmails settings, uncheck the 'Show in Imap' checkbox.

  • How do I add a folder to my Archive folder in Mail?

On previous versions of Mail (on my Mac, NOT on my iPhone), I was able to move whole folders into Archive, but I can't seem to do that anymore.  When I move a folder over the Archive folder, nothing happens.
After looking around, it looks like I can only move single messages or groups of messages into the Archive folder, but that can't be right, can it?
I want to keep my archived emails sorted by the folders they exist in already... can someone please help me do that?

The only way you can now add additional folders to the 'Archive' folder/mailbox is to create the new folders using the specific mail application.
If you have Apple Mail pointing to a Gmail account, you will need to access Gmail web interface and create the folder there.  Likewise for Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, etc.
Not sure if this will work for Apple Cloud mail accounts.
I have a @sky.com account and accessed the Sky webmail interface, created the new folders (Archive/*****) and reopned Apple Mail and there they were under the Archive folder :-)

  • Delete [Gmail] folder in mail?

I just set up a Gmail account on my iPhone 4 and I have a folder listed [Gmail] that I do not want.  Is there a way to get rid of it?  I figured out how to get rid of all the other folders that appeared such as "Spam" and "Important" but I can not get rid of the [Gmail] folder.  Any tips?
    Thanks.
    Thom

You are seeing an intentional but strange feature of GMail...  nothing is ever deleted, and instead remains forever in All Mail.  You probably want to just hide All Mail from Mail, so that you don't have to see it and don't have all those messages syncing back to your Mac.  See Hiding GMail’s “All Mail” from Apple Mail.  There has been one change on GMail since I wrote that, though...  you no longer have to go to Labs and turn on Advanced IMAP.
(Note that my pages contain links to other pages that promote my services, and this should not be taken as an endorsement of my services by Apple.)

  • Cannot delete mail from Archive Folder

I am in the porcess of tryign Mail again, and i must admitt it is a bit of a challenge.
The following problem for example seems so simple but i cannot get it to work.
I have a very large Archive folder that was created i believe from the archive folder from the icloud mail.
I have decided to caopy the Archive folder that Mail created on a seperate hard drive, to increase available storage on my system disk.
Now i want to delete the messages in the Archive folder, but when i select all the messages and then select Delete the messages are cleared from the Archive folder and all seems fine, however within  minutes they are back in the Archive folder, what am i doing wrong?
    thx
    John

Well Kelley, that photo did not come with the system so it had to come from you or someone else putting in the Shared folder.
Choose the file and "get info" (command- i) turn the dislclosure triangle on "Ownership & Permissions" make sure you can "read & write" and make yourself the "owner"(open the lock and enter your admin password).
Then check under General, turn the disclosure triangle and be sure the "locked" box in NOT checked.
    Let us know.

  • Delete Archived Messages

Currently, My Mail Archive is about 3GB.  I would like to export this to an external drive then delete the items in the Achive Folder on my computer to reduce the install footprint.
    1.     If I export the mail, can I get at it again by importing the exported mailbox
    2.     If I delete the mail in the Archive Folder in Mail on my MacBook Pro, will I still be able to access the mail on my external Hard Drive?
    3.     Will deleting the Archived mail affect the other saved messages in other mailboxes I have created, like Family or Friends or some other folder?
Thanks for your thoughts and advice

    Hi Ahmed,
The below link in your given thread does have sth related

But it doesnot answer my question.
I will clarify my question again in more detail.
I want to delete the Archiving session data, index data for the archives and the archived files stored in filesystem.
I want to delete all the arvhived sessions related data which is 6 weeks old. This taks should be possible by using some job, which I can schedule daily with a variable for 6 weeks.
I hope this make my question more clear.

  • Gmail / Replace Trash Button with Archive Button on Mail.app toolbar

I'm using GMAIL IMAP for 4 separat email accounts.
I'm used to the old way Mail.app handled email when I deleted it.  The message would disappear and be sorted into ALL MAIL.
Noticed with Mavericks that when I deleted a message, it went into TRASH.  I could not use the USE THIS MAILBOX FOR feature to redirect deleted email to ALL MAIL as the command was greyed out.
I replaced the DELETE command on the toolbar with the ARCHIVE command and now the messages I wish to remove are sorted to ALL MAIL.  Now I just have to remember NOT to push delete on my keyboard (habit).
Wondering if I've found a solution and anyone else can verify?

I'm experiencing the same thing. I strongly prefer the older behavior which is also consistent with iOS mail. People who don't notice this change may well lose mail, thinking pressing delete archives to all mail rather than moving messages to the trash.

  • How to avoid messages going automatically to the archive folder in Apple Mail?

Dear list members, I've been using Apple Mail (version 7.3 (1878.6)) on my MacBook Pro 13" (9,2) (MacOS 10.9.4) for years to integrate my GMail, university, and other e-mail accounts in the imap mode. Since some weeks, Mail is behaving odd: some messages are sent automatically to the archive folder. That's quite annoying, as I have to move them manually back to the inbox folder, and sometimes I mess some messages. I did not change any config in Apple Mail or my e-mails servers. Could you please help me solve this problem? Thanks.

The Archive folder in Apple Mail is linked to the All Mail "label" in Gmail. A label is treated like an IMAP folder, but it really isn't the same thing.
In case you weren't aware, Gmail saves every email you send or receive inside the All Mail label. In Gmail, you can tag a file with multiple labels. So, a file that comes into Gmail appears in two places at once, the Inbox and All Mail. When you trash a file, the Inbox label is removed, but it still remains in All Mail.
Previously, the All Mail label was hidden from you in Mail. Apple has been trying to make Mail work with Gmail, but that hasn't been going well.
I have never had a problem, but I have both Gmail and Apple Mail set up such that any email I trash actually gets deleted and not stored on the Gmail server. I also have it set to no display the All Mail folder at all.  This may not be a fix as others have similar setups, but have problems with Gmail.
This is how I set it up. I followed the original article, not the Part Deux article. However, you don't need to change the IMAP path prefixes or the label names in Gmail settings. I just have the part where I configured it to delete the emails when I trash them, and hid all the Labels I didn't care to see in IMAP.
Remember, this may not resolve your problems. I don't know of another "fix."

  • Mac Mail removed content from folders, brought back Archive folder

For the last two weeks, I've had no issues with Mac Mail on my new Macbook Pro running Mavericks.
My Mac Mail folders (not folders on the gmail side) were using my rules and filters accordingly. All of a sudden, without warning, my folders went completely blank.
I was using Mail's rules to send messages from Google Alerts to a folder, then things from Twitter and Facebook to another folder and I moved some messages into a third folder for future work.
The "Archive" box was not visible ... now, the Archive box has returned and there are no messages in my folders. I had about 45 unread google alert emails that are no longer showing.
I thought this was fixed because I went back to Mac Mail from Thunderbird to give it a shot. Worked fine with my gmail account. Now, it's back to being buggy again.
I've tried many other mail programs, but Mac Mail was by far the most productive for me. I've shut down and restarted and had the same thing.
The ONLY thing I've done to Mac Mail in the last 2 hours before it started was change a link in my signature and saved it. That was it. Unless that's the bug, I am pulling the rest of my hair out having these issues with Mac Mail. I do not use the web version of gmail very much because it just doesn't suit my workflow. Mac Mail was working great until Mavericks, then I got a new machine and after about two weeks, I tried it and it worked exactly like pre-Mavericks releases.
Now I've lost a bunch of folders and have no idea where those messages are. They were moved and are gone. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is going on here.

Seems like  it  storing the same emails in different folders .  As i see now :
    All Mail  5.11 GB
    Inbox     2.82 GB
    Important  2.56 GB
    Sent Mail  1.8 GB
    Sent          767.4 MB
    Starred     482.4 MB
    Drafts      57.4 MB
    Trash       9.7 MB
    Junk e-mail  671 kb
    Bin              414 kb
    Spam      0
    Deleted Items   0
    Apple Mail To Do  0
    Priority 0
    Follow up  0
    Misc  0
from this above , i can understand that  Inbox ( 2.82 Gb )  and Sent ( 767.4 Mb ) and Drafts are  real folders that contains actual files according to the current status on server .
what the **** the other folders contains , i can not get.  I though those folders should have just show the same files available in the main folders , in different way, according to Folder focus.  Am i right ??
apparently i suspect they just copied original files for some purpuses, insead of working as simple filter folders.
can anybody explain me , how to work this out and make my Mail app do not dublicate emails , but store them in appropriate way and show it to me .

  • ICloud mail: iPhone creates Deleted Messages folder for Trash mail?

I had a problem with one iCloud email account which I've spent half a day truing to sort so though I'd post what happened here in case anyone knows how it happened or in case anyone has the same problem.  The problem centres around the Trash folder.
On all the other accounts (all iCloud email) the folders are replicated and all work.  So Sent, Archive, Drafts and Trash are there.  Deleting a mail on the iPhone, on the Mac or the Cloud puts the mail in the Trash (with the bin icon) and it's visible on all three devices in the same location (albeit the phone uses the Deleted Messages name for trash which is a bit dumb IMO considering it's called Trash everywhere else!!).
One account though seems to be in a mess.  In the Cloud the folder structure is correct and all with the icons.  The first problem is when adding the account to the phone.
First up, when selecting the various behaviours you can see the Deleted Messages icon with the bin icon to select for deleted messages (I do think this is confusing though - why not use the same folder name as appears in IMAP mail - Trash???)  BUT there is also a folder called Trash that the phone can see in IMAP but that doesn't exist in the iCloud folder structure.  Why this folder is even visible I don't know because on iCloud mail there are no user created folders at all, just the default icons and folder names.
When I send a message to the address on the iPhone and delete it from there the iPhone creates a Deleted Messages folder that is visible on iCloud mail.  When I select the bin/trash icon on mail on the phone the mail is in there.  The bin / Trash folder on iCloud remains empty and the Deleted Messages folder has the deleted mail.
So the first issue seems to be that the phone is seeing a folder that isn't there or that somehow the correctly named Trash folder with the icon has become named Trash when the phone sees it, and has a generic folder icon.  Either way, I can't delete this Trash folder.
How it seems to have got fixed was that after trying all manner of things I went to Preferences on iCloud.  I told iCloud to store messages in Deleted Messages.  I then deleted the Deleted Messages folder then suddenly this Trash folder the phone had been seeing became visible.  I then deleted that too and on checking back the Preferences had defaulted back to Trash, the only available option now.
Having gone back to the iPhone the bin icon is still next to the Deleted Messages folder but that Trash folder had gone.  There were no other user defined folders either
I then tested sending messages to the account and deleting them from the phone, Mac and Cloud and they all went to the right place (Trash) and were all visible.
I'd had a problem ages ago where random mailboxes were appearing under the separate email names BELOW where the default boxes are listed and below any On My Mac folders.  I'm wondering whether at some stage, with an old Google hangover, whether I'd selected 'Use this Mailbox for' when these random boxes appeared which might have renamed or messed with the routing of boxes in the Cloud.

That's the way it works. Push notifications are only triggered when you get "new" mail. Other actions, like deleting, reading, moving to a folder do not trigger a Push notification. Those actions only change things when you open the mail app.

  • Why is my new mail going to an "Inbox" folder in the Archive folder?

I've discovered that my new mail is now longer going to the regular Inbox. It's now landing in a new "Inbox" folder in the Archive folder. Why? How can I reset this back to the regular new mail inbox?
I tried renaming the folder in the directory but mail still is defaulting there. I've check to make sure I don't have a filter to do this, no filter for this account.

Use C:\YourWebSite (where C: is your hard drive).
