Delete certain files from backup

Is it possible to:
1) backup my iPhone (locally with my iTunes on Win7), I CAN DO THIS, of course
2) delete only certain files from the backup (there are many tools for exploring backup, but I have not found anyone which can also delete certain file, only view and export), I CAN LOCATE THE BACKUP DIRECTORY and see the files, but is it possible to locate those that I'd like to delete and simply erase them?
3) restore my iPhone with such an altered backup?

PS: I need to delete certain files from var directory, but I do not have root access, so this seems to be the only solution (I do not want to jailbreak and also I do not want to start from zero, I mean to make factory reset and then to set up everything again)

Maybe you should try to install it and try it yourself.
You can edit sql databases (delete some records e.g. from call history), but you cannot delete files in the folders (.jpegs, .plist etc.).
I tried to export only files, that I wanted to recover, then I have made factory reset of my iPhone, made new local backup of the empty reseted device. Then I tried to import to this empty backup those exported files, but it is also not supported. Only files which already exist in the current backup can be imported. It means that you cannot remove or add file into the backup, you can only modify it - with this tool certainly.
Let us try it with another question: is it possible to make selective restore (to restore only certain settings, call history, SMS's, files...,) but not the whole backup?

I don't have my Time Capsule set up to back up every hour or so. It's set up so that I can manually drag & drop files into it. I've been trying to free up space by deleting some movie files that don't need anymore. They appear to be just .avi format but I haven't been paying close enough attention to see if any other formats won't delete. What prevents certain files from being deleted from the Time Capsule?

Delete large file from Time Machine backup drive?

I recently selected to exclude my Aperture.library file from Time Machine, but only after it had done about 8 backups already... the file doesn't exist in the latest folder on my TM hard drive but it is there in previous ones.
how can i delete this file from my TM backups and regain 40gb? (it won't let you delete it in finder)

Let me make my self more clear.
Because of the Apple KB article regarding Aperture and Time Macine, that's exactly why i chose to EXCLUDE my aperture.library file from time machine.
Please don't read any negative tone in this, i'm just trying to explain myself.
But hind sight is 20/20, so i was looking for a way to delete the old previous version of the aperture.library that was sitting on my backup time machine drive (useless taking up space)
I apologize for not searching out that KB article, but i didn't think i'd have to do that. I assumed Apple would know how to have Aperture play nice with Time Machine....

How can I delete an infected file from backup folders

ran Sophos anti-virus recently and it told me I have a malicious trojan on my Mac, Mal/PDFEx-H (which supposedly only affects windows, but it turned up anyway.) Sophos couldn't remove it automatically, so I was instructed to do a manual removal; however, every time I try to delete the file from the backup folders in which it is located, I get a message that "backup files can't be altered."
so, my question is: how do I get rid of some malicious trojan (even though it's only for windows) from my backup folders? Btw, the backup folders in which it is located are all over 2 years old...don't know if that makes any difference, like maybe the entire folders could be deleted without any adverse effects?

I think that Linc means (and I concur) you don't need it to protect your Mac and it wastes resources, if it makes you feel better because it alerts you to windows viruses then remove it and install ClamAX or AV or whetever it's called.
But you don't need AV software.

I can't delete any files from my external hard drives since I tried to delete backups. I can't return backups or delete anything now.

It started when I tried to delete back up files. It wouldn't let me delete them. Came up with "BootX" is locked, then "boot.efi" is locked. Holding down Option while emptying the trash didn't do anything. It wouldn't let me put them back in Backups.backupdb so I just left them in the trash.
But now I can't delete any files from either of my external hard drives. please help!

I bought a external hard drive today...and I've never used TM before.
Basically, I want to back up everything on my computer to the hard drive. But, I'm running out of space on my Mac...is there any way to use Time Machine to back up my computer AND keep all of those files that are taking up all that extra space? I'm assuming it works like an iPhone backup (and deletes contacts, notes, etc. that you delete)...but from what I've read on this site, it seems like Time Machine backups work a little differently. Would it just be easier to partition my hard drive? Thanks guys!

If you delete your files from your main hard drive, TM will eventually purge them from the backups.
If a file existed for more than a week on your hard drive, then TM will keep a copy in its backups until the TM drive fills up, and then the file is at risk of being deleted.
If a file existed for only a few days, there is a chance that all the backups of it will be deleted within a week.
If a file existed for only a few hours, there is a chance that all the backups of it will be deleted the very next day.
All of the above assumes that the file existed *in the same place*. If you moved the file around to different places then there is even less likelihood of it being retained by TM.
If you can manage to keep your files on your hard drive in the same place for at least a week before you delete them, and you always ensure that your TM disk has plenty of space for new backups, then TM will be fine for retaining your deleted files.
If you can't keep your files in the same place for a week before deleting them, and you still want them archived in your backups, then Time Machine is not a good backup program for you to use. Retrospect would be better.

Does Time Machine erase previously saved files if, say, photos are deleted from the Macbook upon the next update, or will they be stored indefinately despite the current status of the files stored on the computer? TM is not designed to do what you ask. As Allan wrote TM is an incremental backup not an archival solution.
If you delete a file from the HD it will eventually be removed from the TM backup (if it ever makes it on to the backup at all).
How long before it is removed depends on a number of factors, TM disk drive size being one factor but not the only one.
Material that is impossible to replace and is important to you (image files usually fitting that description) need to be backed up to as least one other drive and preferably more for long term storage.

I am a mental health professional. My supervisor emails me confidential information as Word documents, which I download using Firefox. When the download is complete, I open the document and save it to my secured flash drive. I would like to then delete the file from my computer, so the flash drive has the only copy, to protect my clients' privacy. The only directions I can find are for deleting the entry from the downloads list, but not the file itself.

There is technology known as RMS which you could set series of policies like only members in the company could access certain documents and if someone copy them and attempt to run them in another PC or outside company, it won't work. Take a look at:

No, I do not believe so. Time Machine would keep all those now-deleted files in previous backups, and as time goes by those backups might be deleted if you needed room, but it would still keep one backup from each day in last month, as well as one from each week forever, as long as you don't start running out of room, then just the oldest would be deleted to make room if needed.
I use a backup drive about double the size of my drive to be backed up, so I would guess it will never get to the point where deleted files being replaced by new ones being backed fill up that drive to the point where backups actually have to get deleted.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output andWi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

As a matter of course, when a project is finished I delete the files from my hard disk and also enter time machine and delete the files from the backup by highlighting the file and then pressing the widget button which gives me a window and I instruct it to delete all backups of this file, then enter my passowrd in another window and the backup is gone. Now, for some reason when I press the widget button the window which appears does not give me the option to delete all backups of the file. Any thoughts?

Several of our PDF File icons on my Desktop images went blank; and, cannot be accessed now. I subsequently received a notification from your company stating that Workspace will be retiring and all files left will be permanently deleted if they aren't down loaded from the site by a certain date in January 2015. However, when I opened the web site, per your company's directions, I wasn't able to open the downloaded files! Please correct this error ASAP.

Can I delete podcast files from iTunes?

I am running iTunes11.2.2 on an iMac, OS X Lion. In older versions of iTunes I could use iTunes' Delete function to remove a podcast from the iTunes library; a dialog box would display confirming removal from iTunes, then a secondary dialog box would display asking if I wanted to keep the file or move it to the trash. This function is similar to the workflow that displays if you want to delete a song from the iTunes library.
Over the past several versions of iTunes I have found that I cannot delete podcast files from the iTunes interface. I can remove the podcast from iTunes, but no dialog displays asking me if I want to keep the file or move the file to the trash. I must now navigate to the file's home in Finder and manually delete it from there.
Does anyone know if this delete functionality was removed altogether? There may be a setting in iTunes that I am missing but I need help being pointed in the right direction. It is frustrating that Apple would seemingly take away this function for podcasts, yet leave it in place for other media types in the iTunes library.
