Delete duplicates in iPhoto

Is there an easy way to delete duplicates in iPhoto?

Well, I welcome your support.
The program appears to be self explanatory.  If I need to use more advanced options I would love to learn.
I told the gentleman at Brattoo customer support when I phoned him a couple of days ago  that I dragged the iPhoto library from my pictures folder on the hard drive  onto the program.  It analyzed for about 20 minutes and concluded i have no duplicates.  He replied that the program does not support "in application files". He offered no other options. I assumed that was the only answer.
I paid for the app so would love to know the truth.  Again I welcome your help.
I am glad a representative of the company is monitoring this thread.

  • Deleting duplicates in iPhoto?

Is there a quick and easy way to delete duplicate photos in iPhoto? For some unknown reason, when I upgraded to a newer version of iPhot, it made 7 duplicates of every photo in my library.

Select them all and then put them all in the iPhoto Trash, then empty the Trash. You can also try using third-party utility:
    Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto 1.6.0
    Duplicate Annihilator 5.1.0
    Decloner 1.6

  • Deleting duplicates in iPhoto - Effects on Time Machine Backup

I am new to Time Machine Backup. I have a query, (perhaps a silly one?)
Out of 4500 photos in my iPhoto, I have trashed 300 duplicates.
On my next backup in Time Machine on an Ext HD, will the deleted photos be also gone?
What about the duplicates that I originally stored in my Hard Drive under My Pictures? Are they also stand deleted?

    Hi blissalvacion,
Time Machine takes exact copies of your HD at the time the backup occurs. Here's an example:
    05/05/10 @ 10:00am - 3500 photos
    05/05/10 @ 11:00am - 3300 photos
So at some point in that hour block, you deleted 200 photos. All of sudden at 11:15am National Geographic calls and wants to pay you $1,000,000 for those 200 photos. If you click on the Time Machine icon in the menu bar at the top and select "Enter Time Machine" you can then view your HD as it looked at 10:00am and restore those deleted 200 photos.
The catch, unfortunately, is that with iPhoto the iPhoto Library is a container file (it's really a folder just doesn't look like one). So if the photos were deleted from within iPhoto you'd need to restore the entire iPhoto Library to how it looked at 10:00am. Based on the size of your iPhoto Library, the restore might take a little while.

  • Deleting duplicates in iPhoto 2.0.1

Hi! Can anyone tell me how to delete duplicate photos from my Photo Library without having to do it manually?
Every time I import photos from my camera, iPhoto imports all of them - including the ones already in the libary. It doesn't give me the option anymore of not importing the duplicates. I didn't have this problem until my husband (the Mac expert in the house) upgraded our Operating System to Tiger.
Also, I tried using the "Duplicate Annihilator" software & now have triplicates (in some cases) of the photos.
Any thoughts on what I did wrong & how to fix it? I have the photos arranged by rolls & would really like to get rid of the duplicates (there are roughly 650 photos in the library). Thanks for your help!

Hi, Martha. You may want to look into iPhoto Diet and see whether you think it might be useful in your situation (IF it works on iPhoto 2 libraries — it hasn't been tested on them, so duplicate your whole library and use iP Diet only on the duplicate library folder until you know it works).
Is there some good reason why you leave photos that have already been imported into iPhoto on your camera card, instead of erasing the card in your camera after each import? (Note: if you adopt the practice of erasing after importing, do the erasing using the camera's own controls, NOT through the Mac.

  • Help - Deleting Duplicates in iPhoto library (iPhoto 5 vers. 5.0.4 (263)

I have a huge amount of duplicate photos in my libraries which are stored on an external hard drive(MyBook). For some reason every verticle photo has at least one duplicate.
Is there a fast way to delete all duplicates or does this have to be done manually? I have over 50,000 photos in my libraries which would make this extremely time consuming. (My original MyBook had been been trashed by a power surge so I had a professional recapture the pictures onto a new MyBook which took about 4 days to transfer all the pictures.) I also just downloaded upgrades for my software before starting to delete pictures and I don't know if this verticle photo duplicate problem is related to upgrading. There are also a few duplicate pictures where one is upside down and the other is correct.

Welconme to the Apple user discussions forum
it sounds like you are looking directly inside the iPhoto library using the finder
Are you? Or are you seeing these duplicates in the iPhoto program?
It is strongly recommended that you do not delete, move or other wise modify the contents of the iPhoto library using the finder or any program other than iPhoto (or an iPhoto aware program like iPhoto Library Manager)
If you are seeing them in the iPhoto program then it is likely that you imported a previous library - it sounds like you do not have a back up of your iPhoto library (shame on you ) which you must start doing if you value your 50,000 photos - Stuff (including power surges) happens - and an external HD is less expensive than a data recovery service . If this is the case then Duplicate annihilator is a good choice

  • How do you delete duplicates from iPhoto import?

I've noticed that when I imported my library from iPhoto, Aperture has imported all versions of images that I've edited over the years (the ones kept in the "original" folders.
Is there a quick way of finding all duplicates ie. time and date for ALL of my images so I can cull the superseded versions imported from iPhoto?
    15" 1.67Ghz Powerbook 2GB RAM 100GB HDD   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1GB Ipod Shuffle, 4GB Ipod Nano, 60GB Ipod Photo

iPhoto will add the keyword "iPhoto Edited" to images that are edits, and "iPhoto Original" for the originals. So you can create a smart album that has that keyword.

  • I need to delete a lot of duplicates on iPhoto. I just bought my MacBook Pro and was so excited I downloaded my external hard drive without thinking through the process. I now realize I had my photos doubled up. So I actually have the same library twice.

    Hello All!
I am so excited about my new computer and I didn't know that my external hard drive had so many pictures duplicated on it. So I downloaded the entire hard drive. I thought iPhoto was going to be my answer, and now after reading a lot of discussions, it seems I have royally screwed up.  Please help me fix this problem. I am a computer novice. An even more Mac novice. I need very simple directions.  I would just start over with iPhoto, but I downloaded my digital camera with brand new photos on iPhoto and also downloaded my digital camera software on my new MacBookPro.  I am afraid if I "start over" with iPhoto I will lose my digital camera pictures. I bought the Mac to finally get my pictures straight, and look at the mess I have made.  I had AVG PC cleanup and used that program last night to delete duplicates from my PC. I also used it to delete duplicates from my external hard drive. I omega. I know, I know, too late huh? But I am teachable. And I now have my external hard drive fixed. But now, my question to the community is how to fix my new Mac, and my iPhoto.
    Thanks,

When you say to remove the photos out of the iPhoto folder, then import the clean single copies, I am understanding that the "original" file that the decloner was run against is now the "clean" single copies?
Ok, you've got iPhoto Library that you have imported everything into, you can't delete the iPhoto Library and start over because you have only one copy of some pictures in there, combined with a lot of duplicates.
You want all the duplicates out, but it will take you ages to do it by hand.
    What you do is.
1: Right click on the iPhoto Library and "Show Package Contents"
2: You will see a folder called Originals, these are all your original photo's, copy this folder to a external drive someplace, it's your backup.
3: Select the Originals folder again and from the Finder Menu > File > Duplicate.
4: Now you will have a OriginalsCopy folder, move that OriginalsCopy folder onto the desktop area out of the iPhoto Library folder. Close the iPhoto Library folder/window.
5: Download the Decloner software and install it, use it to find all the "real" duplicates, via it's content on the OriginalsCopy folder.
6: From the Finder menu > New Folder, now send the duplicate files to that folder, so all that is left in the OriginalsCopy folder is 1 copy of your pictures, minus all the duplicates which are now in New Folder.
7: Open iPhoto and remove all your pictures in there. The iPhoto Library will update to become empty.
8: Now import the pictures from the OriginalsCopy folder, these will now have only one copy of each picture.
9: Open your New Folder, from the Edit menu > Select All and
10 From the Finder > File Menu > Open With > Preview.
Now you have one copy in your iPhoto Library and the duplicates in a New Folder opened with Preview which you can compare to make sure.
Make as many backups of your pictures as you think you need during this prcess, but eventually you only want 1 picture of all you have in the iPhoto Library.
Some pictures may be the same thing but a little smaller etc., these obviously are not duplicates, and you can weed those out by hand in iPhoto.
    Good Luck.

  • How to delete duplicate photos in iphoto

working in iphoto and want to delete duplicates that were created when I used migration assist to import the iphoto library to new machine.  it duplicated all of my pictures.  Using iphoto 9.1.3

Did you import one Library to another? That's the usual cause of this.
If you still have the original library the simple solution is to just trash the damaged Library and do it again. This time don't import the LIbrary, just open it.

  • Organizing and deleting Duplicate Photos in iPhoto library?

Can I easily organize and delete duplicate photos in my iPhoto library?

These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported the library.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates:  PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.
