Delete from backup

I have time machine enabled on my mac and it's been woprking fine. Recently, My Sophos antivirus flagged a virus located in my backup files from time machine. However, when i navigate to the file or folder and try to delete it or move to trash, I get a prompt saying that i cant delete backup files. Is there a way of deleting the flagged file without loosing all of my backup files?

I would be interested in any evidence you have against Sophos being a good product to use other Clam of iAntivirus.

i found a way around deleting the files from the backup.  You have to change the name of the folder via terminal using the MV command
Never do that.  Do not attempt to modify Time Machine backups, other than via methods provided by Time Machine.  That can hopelessly corrupt them (but you may not know that until you need something from them).

What items do you delete from back up on time machine to make more space?

There's no need to do that unless Time Machine has reported a Disk Full alert. In this case you can:
    1. Delete older entries using the Time Machine application to free up sufficient space.
    2. Get a new and larger Time Machine backup drive to replace the old one.
    3. Erase the backup drive and start over.

  • Deleting from backup?????

Was curious on the easiest way to delete all my unwanted files from my external backup? every import i am backing up to a external and have lots of unwanted files taking up space.  any suggestions????

People have so many different ideas about what a backup is and how it should work that they would probably only please a small percentage of users with any system.  I think the backup as you import is to keep a copy until you do the backup of your image repository, with whatever tool does what YOU want it to do.
I don't have LR do that backup.  I used to keep the card until I ran my backup program, but recently I have so many pre-processing steps (fixing Olympus caption, fixing Olympus and Panasonic lens information so the lens is identified and is always the same for the same lens, adding GPS data) that I just keep that copy until I import into LR and run the backup so I can be less confused as to what is on my cards.
Get a disk for backups (or two), think through what you want for backups, get a backup program that does what you want, and run it.

  • If I delete a backup on iCloud, will that erase the data from that backup on my phone?

I had to get a replacement iPhone 5 because of a faulty power button on my first one. In order to keep my data, I used iCloud to backup my phone and transfer it to the replacement. Now I have a backup of my old phone and the replacement and that really limits my available space. (1) Is there a way to merge these together? (2) If I delete the old backup, will the data transferred from it be deleted on the replacement? Sorry if this is confusing and thanks in advance for any helpful information.

You can't merge backups.  Also, deleting a backup only permanently deletes it from iCloud; it doesn't do anything to the data currently on the phone.  If you no longer need your old backup go ahead and delete it.

  • I don't have very much space left on my iCloud backup. I had a previous iPhone, my current iPhone and my iPad that are all connected to one cloud. Can I delete the backup from my previous iPhone? Will it delete in the cloud AND on the phone?

I had a previous iPhone, my current iPhone and my iPad that are all connected to one cloud. Can I delete the backup from my previous iPhone? Will it delete in the cloud AND on the phone? or does it just delete from iCloud? or does it just delete from the phone? Someone please help!

You can delete the backup without any problem. Only the backup will be deleted from iCloud and nothing else will be deleted, so you can do it without worrying about losing data on iCloud or your devices

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
It won't affect any photos in photo stream but any photos within the back up itself will go.

I try to open I photo and  I get the message, your iPhoto library is damaged...please restore from backup. But i din't made backup copy. How can i delete previous library and work wrom the new one?

Try this (assuming you're using iPhoto 12): make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
      Fix #1
delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
    Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • How to prevent time machine from deleting certain backup folders?

So, I have problem undrestanding time machine. Time machine has made a backup of my files in Nov 2012 and another backup from Jan 2013. There is some files in Nov 2012 that I want to keep them forever and never be deleted. So, they were backed up by Time machine (I have deleted those files from my computer so they're no lonegr excist in my compuetr). Althought they do excist on my time machine under the Nov 2012 folder, I am not able to modify them at all for example, I'm not allowed to copy them somehwere else. Since, I can not make another copy of them, I am worried if time machine delete my Nov 2012  in future and then they will be gone. Can someone please help me in modifying/ controling my folder so it won't be deleted in future?

You are using Time Machine incorrectly, your files will be deleted from Time Machine after you delete them from your Mac, the only variable is when.
Time Machine is a backup, not a storage system.
Restore them now and copy them to long term storage (another hard drive)

  • How to stop Time Machine from deleting historical backups

So for the first time I encountered what happens when Time Machine runs out of room - IT DELETES THE OLDEST BACKUPS UNTIL IT HAS ENOUGH ROOM!!!
That's terrible if you rely on those backups. We've been using it like an archive and it's been spectacular. Work on a project and delete it when I'm done because I know Time Machine has a copy.
Well, I no longer have copies of my work from Arpil until July because Time Machine deleted those AUTOMATICALLY to make room. I had always thought that it would warn me it was going to delete older backups and I could just decline. Then I'd go out and get a new drive. This make Time Machine unusable for my purposes.
Is there a was to make Time Machine just stop backing up or warn you before it erases old backups? Some way where it cannot erase them on it's own? Perhaps some Terminal command or anything?
    Thanks!

in system preferences->Time machine->options there is a check box "warn when old backups are deleted". if this box is checked TM is supposed to warn you when it first starts deleting old backups. However, that particular feature is quite buggy and TM is well known not to do that on occasion. there are also other situations when it might decide to delete old backups without warning. Therefore you should NOT use TM as an archiving utility. apart from the above issues it also thins old backups and THAT is always done without warning. TM is a backup tool not an archiving one and you shouldn't use it as such.

  • Is there a way to recover files deleted from a time machine backup

My time machine backup drive was full so I wanted to delete some of the Virtual Machine files created with VMWare Fusion from the time machine backup.  I accidentally deleted them all, instead of just some older ones, so I want to know if there's a way to recover or salvage the files I deleted from time machine.

If is possible do you have a Time Machine backup, What type of files are missing?

  • How can recover a Time Machine backup deleted from my time capsule?

I made a Time Machine backup from my Time Capsule. Yesterday I entered to my Time Capsule to deleted some files and I made a mistake and deleted my backup time machine and empty the trash of my computer. Is it posible recover that Time Machine Backup? Thank you very much.

For most users, it is not possible to retrieve a file that has been deleted this way.
In order to do so, you would have needed to power off your Time Capsule immediately after the file was deleted. Then, you must open up the Time Capsule and remove the hard drive, place it in a special enclosure, and use special software to try to retrieve the data.
Even if you do this, there is no guarantee that you will be able to retrieve the file.
