"DELETE" key to "RETURN"

On a new MacBook Air I'm using the Ukelele key layout for Devanagari to map Dvorak. But when I was on the Aluminum 3G I was able to only switch the "DELETE" key with the "RETURN" key through the system somewhere. Ukelele has maybe updated itself and I was able to switch them there. But the end result is that both keys act as a "DELETE" key. That seems to mean that the "RETURN" key was changed properly but the "DELETE" key cannot be changed.
I found "KeyRemap4MacBook" so I downloaded and Installed it. It did not offer the switch I need. So on the forum I found "DoubleCommand" and still could not make it do what I wanted.
Then the system crashed for the first time and shut itself down. On restart the keyboard didn't function. I uninstalled "KeyRemap4MacBook" and still it was not working. (try typing your password when the key layout is not functioning) Then I uninstalled  "DoubleCommand" and on restart my keyboard works!
Anyone have any ideas for remapping the "DELETE" key to "RETURN" ?

You cannot do that with UKELELE, because this beautiful app does not change system settings. You have two ways to deal with this:
1. Apple’s settings in System Preferences / Keyboard / Modifer Keys
2. and / or install a pretty utility called DoubleCommand, free. This one can offer many settings. I use it for changing right Enter key on my MacBook into Option key, just because I use many keybaord layouts, and also need dead keys very frequently.
Give a try, you will be satisfied.

  • How to open files with "return" key and delete files with "delete" key?

    Hi friends,
It's been over a week since I got my iMac and I'm loving it. However, while I'm adapting alright to 'mac' key shortcuts (e.g. using the COMMAND-S for save as opposed to CONTROL-S used in PC).
However, there are 2 things that are annoying me greatly right now.
    1. I like selecting files with keys as opposed to using the mouse. I make animations and prefer keyboard shortcuts. However, when I hit "return", instead of opening the file it goes into file-renaming mode. How do I change this? Likewise, I would like to delete files by hitting the delete key. This does not work - how do I change this?
    2. When I click SHIFT key sometimes, it gets 'stuck' - which is annoying because I start typing CAPITALS when I wasn't aware I've activated the CAP-LOCK key. How do I get rid of this? Like, I don't want to hit SHIFT for instance, and have that up arrow thing 'stuck' there.
Your help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi
    Thanks for the star.
If you went into Mac Help & searched, 2 results come up:
Full keyboard access shortcuts for interacting with items (for selecting & activating controls).
Full keyboard navigation keyboard shortcuts (for navigating Desktop, Windows, Menu bar etc)
From the lists, select the link that closely describes your situation.
I have to say that I can't reproduce your problem, does this happen just in applications or in everything? I don't know if it's to do with this but pressing Shift 5 times turns on Sticky Keys & Option(Alt) 5 times to turn on Mouse Keys (System Preferences>Universal Access>Keyboard).
After typing "Sticky Keys" into Mac Help, I found this:
"Pressing a group of modifier keys as a sequence
To perform many tasks on your computer, you need to press one or more modifier keys (Shift, Command, Option, and Control) at the same time as another key. For example, pressing Shift-Command-Q in the Finder opens the Logout dialog.
If you have difficulty pressing several keys at once, you can make it easier to press a set of keys by turning on Sticky Keys in the Universal Access preferences pane. With Sticky Keys turned on, you can press a set of modifier keys as a sequence. As you press each key, the symbol for the modifier key appears on the screen.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Universal Access. Then click Keyboard.
Select the On button next to Sticky Keys.
To hear a sound whenever the computer registers that you have pressed a modifier key, select "Beep when a modifier key is set."
To see an icon indicating which modifier keys you have pressed, select "Display pressed keys on screen."
You can also use Slow Keys to adjust the amount of time between when you press a key and when it is activated."
Any of this close to your problem?
    Steve
Edit: I'm right, it's Sticky Keys:

  • Primary Key Source returning improper value

    Hi All,
I have a tabular updateable form.
    My Primary Key field has
Primary key Source Type : Custom PL/SQL Function
    Primary key Source : RETURN (EB_PACKAGE.GET_COD_NUM (:P4_CTY_TYPE));
My function is in a package and is executing properly and i have checked it.
I have an Item on that page as P4_CTY_TYPE whose value i'm passing to obtain the Primary key.
But my problem is the function does not return a proper value, i feel the value being passed for the function is always same. Why is proper value not being passed.
Hopefully I have explained my problem, if not let me know so.
    Hoping for the solution.
    Thanks n Regards
    Arif

    Hi Ravi,
Thanks for the reply and sorry for late reply.
The session value for P4_CTY_TYPE is ok.
P4_CTY_TYPE is a Select List with Submit.
I have a Report and there's a link which changes the value of P4_CTY_TYPE or can be changed by itself as it is a Select List.
Depending upon the value of P4_CTY_TYPE I'm displaying records in a Tabular form with Insert, Update and Delete facilities.
Now Suppose the Value for P4_CTY_TYPE is 10 at the start of the session then the function works fine and it always does for this value, when i select other value for P4_CTY_TYPE say 20. The value returned by my function is as if the parameter value being passed to the function EB_PACKAGE.GET_COD_NUM (:P4_CTY_TYPE)) is 10 and not 20. This is what i mean by function does not return a proper value.
If any more clarification required do let me know.
    Thanks Once again.

  • Why does the delete key on the keyboard go backward?  How can I make it go the other way?

I'm used to a PC keyboard that enables me to delete characters from where my cursor it to the next space to the right.  The keyboard I have with my Mac, alas, is frustrating for me to use because it goes backwards from what I am used to.  Is there a fix to this?  My PC keyboard has a backspace button in addition to the delete button, so it is very straightforward for me that way.

The delete key, if the cursor is placed mid sentence, will remove letters etc forwards from that cursor point.   If you are deleting from the end of a sentence, the backward facing long arrow above the return key will delete backwards from that point.
For groups of letters or sentences, highlight them and press delete.
It is one of those situations where you should learn the new approach because the rest of the system is geared to it.

Huh.. Interesting. I went back to check these proceedures and found there is a difference between using the return key or the space bar as the action command.
tabbing the blue ring moves the selection and then spacebar takes that action. The return key takes action of only the blue collored button.

  • Delete key function reset required

The delete key in Safari always returned to the previous page browsed. Now, for some reason, it only functions as a regular delete key and no longer moves back a page. This happened for, seemingly, no reason, I didn't reset anything. Any ideas how to reset the key so it becomes the "page-back" key it should be? I just hate having to move the arrow up to the corner all the time!
I've done the obvious, reboots etc.
    Thanks.

The delete key (called backspace on a PC) deletes to the left. If you want to delete to the right, hold down the function key (fn on the lower left corner) and delete.

  • Where is the DELETE key -- and I don't mean "backspace"

Every PC of any stripe that I have ever owned -- and we're talking a lot of machines in nearly 30 years of this -- has had two 'delete' keys.
One is a backspace key -- it erases characters in before the cursor. It's usually found above the enter/return key, where the backspace key used to be on those old-fangled typewriter machines.
The other key was a "delete" key -- which would erase characters that apper AFTER the cursor. There the backspace key would erase backwards, the delete key would erase forwards.
So, where is the DELETE key on a Mac keyboard? Is there some combination of keys that will serve that purpose? Or does somebody really think I'm going to move the cursor to the end of some place and delete backwards ALL the time?
I read in yesterday's Wall Street Journal that Steve Jobs doesn't like buttons, but this is ridiculous. It could, in fact be a fatal error... I've still got 10 days to take this thing back...
    --PS

I don't suppose there is any kind of utility program that would let me re-map they keyboard, so that I could make, say, the "enter" key at the bottom into a "forward-delete" key (I never use that enter key, my hands are trained to use the "enter/return" key where it's always been on a typewriter -- yeah, I'm that old...)
Either buried on the Mac somewhere or a third party program that would let me do that? Would sure make the MacBook more liveable... I delete a LOT!
    Thanks,
    --PS

  • Delete key in System Python

    Hi all,
I have removed a MacPython installation and returned to the /System python for Leopard. My Terminal works fine, and if I push delete key it just deletes to the right, as it should do. The problem is that inside python I get a '~' character instead of deleting.
Any ideas on what may be causing this?
    Thanks,
    Albert

When you switched the Terminal preference from Delete is Control-H to unchecked, did you try creating a new Terminal session? Or even quitting and restarting Terminal? Sometimes preferences such as this affect the Next Terminal session. Just want to turn over every possible "Rock".
My python is the Mac OS X 10.5.8 version
    /usr/bin/python
My locale is I assume the default for American English. The locale command says says
    locale
    LANG=
    LC_COLLATE="C"
    LC_CTYPE="C"
    LC_MESSAGES="C"
    LC_MONETARY="C"
    LC_NUMERIC="C"
    LC_TIME="C"
    LC_ALL=
I DO NOT have a .inputrc (no readline customization).
My keyboard is the MacBook keyboard.
Just checking if you are getting 0x7F as the delete key. This is a situation where to only way out is to close the Terminal Window or Tab.
    stty raw; hexdump
now just keep hitting the Delete key until you get a line of output (16 Deletes should do it):
    0000000 7f 7f 7f 7f 7f 7f 7f 7f 7f 7f 7f 7f 7f 7f 7f 7f
But because you put your session into Raw mode, you can not kill the hexdump command. So the only way out is to just close the Terminal session (Command-W), or Quit Terminal.
If you can think of any other variables we could check, I'll be glad to provide what I can.
Or maybe someone else will just provide a solution

  • Delete key in on screen keyboard for Dell Venue Pro 8 tablet?

Using Windows 8.1 on a Dell Venue Pro 8 tablet. The software, onscreen keyboard does not have a Delete key. That makes it very hard to do any editing after highlighting a block of text. Hitting the backspace key takes it out of the block edit mode and
just deletes on letter at a time. Anyone know if this is a general Windows tablet problem or possibly some unique to the Dell Venu Pro 8 tablet? I would like to change the keyboard layout to include the Delete key. Also, is there setting so it could recognize
when to capitalize a word? I would think that my Sumsung phone would not have a better software keyboard, but it has a much, much better version in SwiftKey.

I guess you mean the "touch keyboard" ?
There is a "keyboard selector" key in the bottom right hand corner, which allows you to select alternative layouts - have you tried that?

  • Text won't stop deleting, delete key appears to get "stuck"

Sorry if this is in the wrong topic, I have never used the support forums for any of the multitude of problems I have had with my Mac, but this one is severe and odd enough that I couldn't even find anyone else discussing it (although I'm sure someone is, but I tried many search key combinations on Google and only found unrelated things), so I decided to at least get it documented.
I have had an issue that has happened at least 3 times I can remember (I am fairly certain it has happened more, closer to 7-8, those are just the times I am 100% confident about), although very spaced apart and infrequent, where my delete/backspace key seems to get "stuck". However, at least one time I can verify that I never even hit the key. Whatever text I currently have open immediately starts deleting at lightspeed, and I can do nothing to stop it. None of the other keys on my keyboard work, and though my mouse works, if I click somewhere else, it starts deleting the text there. When I force it to go to another window where there isn't an open text box, I get the general Mac error sound, and it repeats non-stop, and faster than I've ever heard it. I have to do a hard shut-down, although once it led to a kernal panic. When I have stopped whatever is happening before it panics though, when I restart, I don't receive any kind of error message, nor the message about OS X not having been shut down properly.
Every single time it has happened when I was typing something that couldn't be saved, like a message on a forum, a private message on a site or an IM chat window. Sometimes I lost a half hour's worth of work or more.
The first time it happened, I honestly thought someone had managed to hack into my computer, but another time I was using a physical modem and Airport was turned off, and when I ripped out the cord, it didn't stop.
I have a MacBook Pro from 2007, running the most recent version of Tiger. I haven't had the money to upgrade. All security updates are up-to-date, with one exception: I have not upgraded to the most recent version of iTunes.
Honestly, I currently am having and have been having a bunch of other severe issues with my Mac, so troubleshooting will be quite difficult as it's not at all impossible it's a result of one of my other problems. I also currently am dealing with some health problems that make me unable to try to find the root of the problem, specifically I have a problem with my hand and wrist that makes typing very difficult.
If someone does recognize this issue and already knows why it might be happening, I'd appreciate the help. I'd also appreciate anyone letting me know how I can prevent it OR what to do when it begins and how to stop it. But I probably will be unable to go through a typical troubleshooting rundown.
As I said, I just wanted this documented, and I also would like to know if anyone else has had this problem. I have never experienced an issue like this with any of my past computers, including Macs and PCs. I do know however that the key is NOT physically getting stuck - as in getting lodged down and continuing to be pressed. There is at least 1 time I can verify I never even hit the key (I wasn't typing anything at the time). I am fairly sure the problem is entirely unrelated to the actual delete key itself.
I'll describe the symptoms one more time:
At a random time, with no discernible warning, text contained in whatever text box I have open begins deleting itself. Several paragraphs disappear in a matter of seconds.
Pressing escape or any other key on the keyboard does nothing. If I click to another area in the text, it will immediately begin deleting wherever I have placed the cursor. If I go to another window with text that can be edited, it begins deleting there. It does not delete in more than one place simultaneously.
If I bring another window without any kind of "deletable" text to the front, one of the general Mac error sounds (I'm not sure which one it is) starts happening and repeats without stopping at a rate that could induce a seizure. To stop it all, the only thing I have found can be done is a hard shut-down. Another time it continued to end in a kernal panic. I wish I had the details of the error, but it was so long ago and I have no idea which panic is the right one in the logs.
I have no way of knowing what programs were running at the time, as obviously that's not something I'm able to pay attention to when it happens, and it has happened so randomly and infrequently it's nothing I've been able to document. Since I have to restart to make it stop, I've then lost that info and I have no time to try to write it down or something beforehand.
I have not had any similar issues that I know of (for instance, for the "g" key keeps repeating and won't stop typing "g's") and I've never experienced this on any past computer.
Thanks for anyone who can help!
If you aren't able to offer advice but have had this issue yourself, PLEASE let me know. I can't seem to find anyone who has experienced this particular problem.

"Cleaning the keyboard is the first step in troubleshooting sticky/stuck keys."
Okay, I guess I misunderstood, although I am still confused. You're saying that since the other user did an extensive clean of their keyboard and this did not solve the problem, it is "most likely" a hardware problem, correct? Wouldn't a thorough cleaning without any results show that it's probably not physically related to the keyboard?
"The "delete" key may be defective or the cover you are using somehow is making the key stick. If you have ruled out the latter and everything else, your only other alternative is to take the MBP to your local Apple Store or AASP. The staff will check out your keyboard (free) to confirm if you are having a hardware problem. If you have AppleCare or ProCare, the repairs will be free. If not.................."
Well, I had just said in my most recent post that it has now happened with other keys, and in my initial post that it happened at times when my hands were nowhere near the keyboard. It is not a defective delete key and the cover is not making the keys stick - it doesn't adhere to them and does not have any sticky substance on it of any kind. I am an experienced computer user, and I know my computer very well. While I am not a psychic that can always know what is causing a problem, I am able to discern with much accuracy what is NOT causing it.
Also, I have significant health issues so getting to an Apple store would be a huge challenge for me. And although I have AppleCare any repairs won't be free. Due to some small physical damage my laptop obtained a few years ago, I have been completely refused almost all service that I paid over $300 for, even though the damage is completely superficial. After fighting this, I was told they WOULD repair my computer, however, they would also repair the physical damage despite my insisting NOT to; I had no choice in the matter and the cost would be a minimum of $1,500 (I also would not be informed the exact price until after and my credit card would be charged without my knowledge - I had to give them my credit card number and sign away their right to make any charges and when I requested being contacted before they charged me for the repairs I didn't want done, I was told they did not do that). My family is struggling to pay for my $5 medications.
When my logic board died (that same issue that affected thousands of computer users), I had to print out Apple's report from their site, which stated that they would replace and repair them free of charge to ANY Mac owner with a computer that met certain qualifications (which mine did). When it happened, completely out of nowhere, I knew immediately that was the problem, yet still had to go through the insulting and idiotic "Is your computer plugged in?" list of things and a customer WITH AppleCare was being refused a service they'd offered to people WITHOUT AppleCare, for a known manufacturing defect that has occurred widely in nearly every brand of computer made.

  • How can I restore Thunderbird behavior so I can delete emails by pressing delete key multiple times (without using mouse to change focus back to message list)?

    Thunderbird 24.3.0 (latest under OpenBSD)
I (like most people) get spam in my inbox. When there are multiple spam messages in a row in my inbox I used to click on the first message and then press the delete key repeatedly for each sequential spam message.
After upgrading, this doesn't work. Instead, when I click a message it opens in the message preview pane and moves the focus to the message. Thus I need to click twice to even be able to press the delete key to delete one message. When I press the delete key, the message is deleted and the highlighted message becomes the next one in the list. This opens the message in the preview pane and again shifts the focus to the message. Thus I can't press the delete key again but must move the mouse to click on the message before I can delete it.
As a result, what used to be a very fast process of weeding through spam has become a real annoyance.
I realize I can hide the message preview pane to prevent the focus from moving, but this means I must delete solely based on the email subject/sender -- or open each message (which is even slower).
I also realize that I can press tab multiple times (sometime 4, sometimes many more) to shift the focus back but that's not much faster than using the mouse.
How can I prevent Thunderbird from shifting the focus away from the email list panel unless I actually click somewhere else?

Well said! And you said it about six weeks ago. And 4 other people said "Me Too." - I guess we're screwed.
I guess it's time to switch to GMail.
Such a trivial thing, but it irritates me every single time.
