Delete Keywords in Bridge? Re-import into Lightroom?

When I started trying Lightroom three weeks ago, I imported a few folders to learn with and created a keyword hierarchy.
Then when I imported all my photos, the keywords assigned in Bridge came along for the ride, giving me something to do with my time straighten it back to the structure I had created.
I use Bridge for renaming. Renaming my photos with the date first is a priority right now to help straighten out a mess of scanned photos not organized by date. It's been a slow process but necessary and I find it much easier to do in Bridge.
So now I know renaming files outside of Lightroom creates a problem. What will happen if I get rid of my Lightroom catalog; delete all keywords in Bridge (not a problem since I'm right now working in folders for renaming and can easily delete all keywords in the folder); then import all the renamed files into a new catalog in Lightroom.
Will the files keep the keywords written to them before in Lightroom even though I deleted keywords in Bridge? Or will I be deleting all keywords and have to start assigning them all over?
Hope this makes sense, I'm afraid to do anything right now!
Peggy

Peggy,
I think that if you are creating a new Ligtroom catalog, and importing your photos, that they will reflect what you have done in Bridge.
But, to confirm that, I would suggest that you do a small test first:
Start Lightroom, create a new catalog, import say 5 photos and see what Lighroom shows as keywords. Select a photo in Lightroom, change its keywords, save the changes and see if Bridge shows the change. Do the same then in Bridge, and Lightroom should show an icon at the top right of the frame in Grid view. Right-Click on it and "read metadata from file". The keywords should show the Bridge changes.
I think you will see that Keywords operate fairly well between both programs. (If I had the time now I would have experimented for you, but I thought that suggesting something would be faster and work better).
I think that when you have finished all your keywording in Bridge, you can safely create Lighroom catalog and import all you photos, and the new Bridge keywords will be there. (None of the old Lightroom catalog keywords should show up).
p.s I am not atall sure of the syntax in Bridge for entering Parent-Child keywords, but Lightroom's syntax is Child>Parent. I had to think about the Lightroom syntax, because I always think the > is the "greater than" symbol in maths etc, but now I look at as a branching from Parent to Child. Amazing how the little things become " gotchas".

  • Re Importing into Lightroom 4.1

My photographic equipment consists of a Nikon D 7000 ( set to RAW) and a P 5000 (JPEG). My computer is an iMac with Lightroom 4.1 installed. Up until recently it has been possible to import from the SD cards directly into Lightroom via the reader in the side of the Mac. As of late the program will let me see the previews but when I attempt to import the images a message pops up that the files cannot be read! I can import them into 'iPhoto' but this is not where I want them! Can any one please suggest what has caused this new problem? I eagerly await any suggestions. With Thanks.

Dear tlsteinb. Thanks for your reply. I tried the ejection of the external drive as you suggested. To no avail! It is still a mystery to me. I do not know if i have to change a setting on the camera, the computer, or the program! I tried to send a 'chat' message to Adobe directly. How successful that will be we will wait and see! I shall keep you posted. Regards, Rae Dall

Just this morning I've begun experiencing the same thing. I can get the photos off the card and onto the iMac desktop for instance, but they won't import into Lightroom 4 from either the card reader or the desktop. So my assumption is that my card reader is working fine, but Lightroom is not. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the images are in the location you want them be sure to select "Add" at the top of the import dialog box.

  • PSD files created using export data set fail to import into lightroom

If I create a set of files using variables in a data set, the PSD files won't import into LightRoom. LR says to resave with maximum compatibility, but I already have that set in Photoshop. If I open one of the files and resave it, it will import. Perhaps PS isn't honoring the maximize compatibility setting when exporting.

    Hi,
I downloaded 10g database ver 10.2.0.1.0 from oracle site and installed it on my laptop. I took an export of schema which was on my 9i database ver 9.2.0.1.0 using 9i exp, created tablespace and user in the 10gdb and tried to import the same to 10gdb using 10g imp using the following.
    imp system/pswd@10gdb fromuser=test touser=test file=expdat.dmp log=expdat.log
    it displays
    .importing SYSTEM'S objects into SYSTEM
    .importing TEST'S objects into TEST
and it doesnt import any objects just hangs. The Log file does'nt have any entries.
    Can anyone help me.

  • Why when I add/import bridge CS6 photos into Lightroom 5 the photo totals don't match?

I have added about 3,200 photos into Bridge CS6 and many have been edited.  I went into Lightroom to Library/Import/add and only about 2800 were added.  Anyone know why I don't see all of them?  I even double check the import and don't see any new ones that I missed.  Hope it's something simple.

    Found it.
At first I was scared off because LR showed the same amount of photos to be imported the second time as it did before the first import.
Fortunately, the second import did nothing but import the new photos.
    Thanks.

  • RE-Importing into Lightroom 3 from external drive---simple?

This is isn't as simple as it sounds.  My hard drive started to fail, but I replaced it with a new one (I still have access to all of the data on the old hard drive).  I used to use Photoshop Elements to organize my photos, but moved to LR2 several years ago. I upgraded to LR3 about a year ago, and it has been backed up regularly.  However,  I have not done a good job of organizing my photos.
I am now learning that that LR does not actually keep the photos themselves in its database, but just a copy of the information about the photo (I know I should have known this before, but I didn't).  Whenever I imported a photo into LR3, I would not have it copy the photo, but actually import it.  The original file folder would be empty, so I erronesouly thought that LR3 was keeping a copy of not only the data, but the photo itself in the database.  I double back up my hard drive, so I thought it would be a piece of cake to import this back into LR3.  Maybe it is, but I sure can't find a simple way to do this.  This is what LR has to say about it:
"Lightroom allows you to schedule regular catalog backups when you exit the software. Backups executed from Lightroom include only the catalog file. You must manually back up your edited photos, previews, sidecar files, slide shows, web galleries, and exported photos outside Lightroom"
Being a ready, fire aim kind of guy, this is the first time I have read that.
So I have installed LR3 on my new hard drive, but on my old hard drive I have LR3 folders, LR2 folders, and photo folders.  I have tons of tags I created in LR3, and want to preserve the tags, but I also want to make sure I import all of the old photos as well as the LR data correctly.  It appears that LR3 moved the photos into "My Pictures" which would be easy enough to bring over to my new hard drive, but I also want to import the LR3 data.  I'm also not sure if the LR2 data even matters any more since I have LR3, but I can't really tell from what I have read.
Sorry for the long winded explanation, but I am trying to import the LR photos and data over from the old hard drive into the new hard drive in the most effective way possible without losing any information (like tags).  Do I just drag "My Pictures" from the old hard drive to the "My Pictures" in the new hard drive and then open the latest LR3 catalog from that location?  Something else?
Sorry for the basic question, but I obviously had some major gaps in my LR3 abilities.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hal,
Thanks very much for your help!  What I first did was just drag the entire contents of "My Pictures" from the old hard drive, over to "My Pictures" on my new system (thanks to a SATA to USB plug with power brick that I am able to use to pull everything off my old laptop hard drive).  However, that created two "My Pictures", with the old being a sub folder of the new. So I deleted everything, started over and imported all of the folders over individually.  I also brought over the LR catologs as you described.
So I tried to open up the LR 3 Catalog, but it didn't have any data in it.  There was another LR3-2 catalog, so opened that and it seemed to be the one with the data.  Why there were two is a mystery to me, but within the Lightroom folder, there were other folders including LR2 catalogs and a bunch of temporary folders.
The question marks showed up on the folders as you described, but the top folder in the collection was simply the first folder of dozens of folders.  There was no "My Pictures" folder within the LR collection  (which I thought was odd).  There was also no "Locate Missing Folder" option when I right clicked on the folders (I have Windows 7 64 bit Professional if that makes any difference).  I saw the option of "synchronize folder" when I right clicked each folder. so I clicked that and it removed the question mark and seemed to work.
However, I'm not real sure of this entire setup. I have over 40 GB of photos, so it is hard to tell if the whole thing is put together correctly.  I tested out some photos and the tags seem to be there, but I am going to have get more comfortable with how LR3 creates and stores data.  I've started wading through the LR tutorials, but most of it I know about.  It is the storage, organization and especially, the backup and reimporting of photos and information that has me squirming.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Process for exporting out of Aperture to import into Lightroom

I'm trying to convert a large library of images that is presently cataloged in Aperture 2.0 into a Lightroom 2.0 Catalog.
Aperture doesn't store the sidecar files with the raw files. Is there a procedure or plugin that will create sidecar files in the same location as the (raw) image files in a nested file structure, so that I can then import the images (where they are now on the disk) into Lightroom and retain all the information that was recorded in Aperture (e.g. star ratings, keywords)? There are many thousands of images, in a fairly complex nested file structure, and recreating the images or manually moving files where they need to be in the file structure would take many hours.
If there is a FAQ on this topic, can someone simply kindly point me to the FAQ? I tried searching but was unable to find anything useful. I found solutions that exported the master files (duplicating ALL the image files) with xmp sidecars but as noted above this would be problematic given the size and structure of the files currently in Aperture.
    Thanks!

There are 2 big problems with the export/duplication route:
    1) The files are in a fairly complicated nested structure, and they need to STAY in that nested structure.
    2) The time and disk space required to duplicate the entire library.
I don't have iView, don't know enough about Applescript to do this myself. (If I did, I would have done it already after reading the threads here that referenced iView.)
This is *extremely* frustrating. If this is a simple thing (for someone with the appropriate skillset) to write a plugin for, Adobe should have an employee or associate developer do it to ease the transition for new customers coming to Lightroom with a library already cataloged in Aperture.

  • Importing into Lightroom with card reader doesn't show previews

I am using Lightroom 2.4 with Adobe 5.4 Raw on a Windows XP based laptop -- however the problem I am having also presents on my desktop which also uses Lightroom 2.4 with Adobe 5.4 and Windows XP.  In fact the issue is completely the same on both computers:   When I try to import photos directly into Lightroom using a card reader, the interface opens, but does not show the previews -- and yes, the show preview box is checked.  The preview boxes are there, but they are completely greyed out.  If I use the same card reader but direct it to open into Photoshop Elements it shows the previews and it also shows them in Bridge for CS4. So clearly the problem doesn't lie with the computer or card or cardreader.   It seems only in Lightroom that the previews do not show up.  Adobe raw supports my camera which is set to shoot raw and it also makes a JPG copy, but neither show up.
I spent more than an hour with a tech trying to get this to work and didn't solve the problem.  I'm hoping that someone has some bright ideas that will help me out.
    Phyllis Perkins

I tried to respond before, but I think the message didn't go through.  Sorry.  Because my Lightroom hasn't been working the way it is supposed to, I have been doing what you suggest -- saving the photos from my card reader to a file through Bridge -- which does open the previews -- and then importing them to Lightroom.  But it means one extra step and Lightroom's strength is supposed to be work flow, so I would like to get it to work properly.  I think that if the card reader were faulty -- and the problem occurs with several different card readers -- that it wouldn't show the previews in Bridge or even Photoshop Elements, which it does.  So I think there is some problem with Lightroom, not the card reader.  Any other suggestions?  I'd be happy to know about them.  Meanwhile, thanks for your reply.

  • Jpegs already in folders won't import into Lightroom 4

All my cr2, nef and tiff files import fine into Lightroom 4. All the jpegs made in DxO import fine into Lighroom. But the jpegs made in Digital Pro Professional aren't recognized in my Library folders. Neither are the jpegs made with in my camera along with the raw files. If I open a tiff file in Capture NX2 to do local dodging and burning it saves it fine within Lightroom and saves those jpegs too.
    Strange?
PS: Using Windows 7x64 home premium, Canon 5D Mk2

Strange? Possibly not.....if the option to "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" is unchecked in your Lightroom Preferences (General Tab) then Lightroom will only allow the importation of the Raw of a Raw+Jpeg 'pair' (the jpeg is noted and referenced as a 'sidecar' file in the Raw's metadata). That would easily explain the issue of the OOC raw+jpeg pairs, and may explain the issue of the DPP jpegs IF they have the same filename and live in the same folder as their original raw files.

  • HELP IMPORTING INTO LIGHTROOM 4.4

I am having problems all of a sudden importing my RAW files into Lightroom.  I have been doing nothing different and have been using the same equipment.  Can someone please help?  It just says that it can't read the files.

Which often means the files can't be written to the specified destination folder. So check that permissions are OK and that there isn't a space issue there.

  • JPG´s will not import into lightroom 1.4.1 ("the file appears to be unsupported or damaged")

I have converted a collection of raw files with Autopano pro to jpgs.
When importing them into lightroom 1.4.1, part of the collection is not displayed in lightroom and the software gives me the msg "the file appears to be unsupported or damaged".
The same files open up with any other jpg supporting software.
Can anybody help me with this

I was not aware of this pano program but have downloaded a trial copy and will give it a go. I just did a set of images that PTGUI could not deal with and it looks like this program did it perfectly even without muddling with the control points. Its also dealing with 1 image where I cropped out a conflicting angle of view area.
I just imported the jpeg out of this package into LR with no problems. I edited it after import to LR with Photoshop CS3 to do a cleanup crop of the pan.
I'm very impressed with PanoPro right now. Will have to purchase. PLUS...it runs either Mac or PC!!! Solves yet another problem I've had with my conversion to Apple.

  • Adding Metadata deletes keywords in Bridge 2.1.1.9

I had keyworded a large number of images. I then noticed that I had not applied my usual Metadata info (IPTC Core) (copyright, name, address, etc). I went to the Metadata panel, selected and clicked to Append my 2008 Metadata to the large number of selected and previously keyworded images.
The Metadata was written to the image, and all the keywords were removed. I do not believe that this problem has occurred with previous versions. I thought that Append Metadata would do just that, i.e. add the metadata to the keywords in the IPTC location. I would think that this keyword removal would occur if I had selected Replace Metadata.
What am I doing wrong, other than not adhering religiously to my workflow and inserting Metadata before the Keywords as I usually do.

I found the following info in Bridge Help:
Apply metadata templates to files in Bridge
    Select one or more files.
Choose either of the following commands from the Metadata panel menu or the Tools menu:
Append Metadata, followed by the name of the template. This command applies the template metadata only where no metadata value or property currently exists in the file. (Append isnt available if youve selected multiple files.)
Replace Metadata, followed by the name of the template. This command completely replaces any existing metadata in the file with the metadata in the template.
Note, Append Metadata is available regardless of number of images selected, and deletes Keywords regardless of number of images selected.

  • Pre-sets are are automatically being imported into Lightroom 1.4

    Have a Mac 10.5.4
As yet not removed Lightroom 1.4. from computer ( also have a compressed zip copy)
On importing new pre-sets into Lightroom 2.
Lightroom 1.4 automatically imports them - even if I have Lightroom 2 open.
How to I get around this?
    thank you

Both Lr 1 and Lr 2 use the same default location for presets.
If you want separate preset locations then choose the "Store presets with catalog" setting in the Presets tab of your Preferences settings.

  • Problem with Importing into Lightroom

I have Lightroom 5.3 64 bit installed on a Windows 7 SP1 machine. I have two pairs of mirrored HDDs for image file storage.
I: and J: are both mirrored pairs of HDDs (four discs). When I first imported the "Panorama images" image files on the (I:) drive into Lightroom, the file called "8 bit Adobe RGB Panos" was corrupted on the drive; the "8 bit Adobe RGB Panos" files were not accessible from Lightroom or Photoshop or Windows. (The screen shot above is comparable to a before-and-after screen shot; the (J:) is like the before and the (I:) is like the after screen shot. The "8 bit Adobe RGB Panos" file is there before importing into LR, but it is missing after "Panorama images" is imported into LR.)
Below is what Windows and Lightroom showed after the Import of "Panorama images" into LR.
I replaced the "8 bit Adobe RGB Panos" file, from backup media. I tried Importing the files a second time, and the same thing happened again. At that point I gave up on importing any part of the "Pano" image files into LR.
Next: I also have image capture files, camera card downloads, archived on the same mirrored arrays, in the "My Pictures" file. When I tried to Import the latest file of camera images into Lightroom from "My Pictures", LR again erased or corrupted the "8 bit Adobe RGB Panos" files, on both arrays, and again "8 bit Adobe RGB Panos" disappeared, and again I had to replace it from backup media.
This is very irritating. Very very irritating. At this point it makes Lightroom more harmful that useless.

The reason for the different drive designation is the assignment when the drives have been remounted.. The first time this occurred, the machine had one two-drive-array, "Photo Storage RAID (F:)". When I imported into LR the "Panorama images" file, the  "8 bit Panos Adobe RGB"  file path was lost. The files could not be found in PS or LR.  Windows Explorer could not find the files, and showed the odd "8BITAD-1". All of the other files in the "Panorama images" file were imported into the LR catalog.
I then replaced both discs in the RAID array with new HDDs, and rewrote the files on to them, and remounted the array (new letter assignment for the drive). I then, a few months later, tried to again Import the Panorama images file into LR. And the exact same thing happened.
I removed and rewrote both arrays, the new disc pair and the old disc pair, and remounted them, now they are drives (I:) and (J:). (One pair is  mounted to the board disc controller, and the other pair is mounted on a PCI SATA controler card,
I then imported "My pictures" (not the "Panorama Images" file) from the (I:) drive into LR, and the "8 bit Adobe RGB panos" again disappeared from the (I:) drive, That is the top screen capture. I then tried to Import the "My Pictures" file from the (J:) drive, and the "8 bits Adobe RGB panos" file disappeared from the (J:) drive; the (J:) file path looked the same as the (I:) file paths in the top screen capture.
LR imported about one half of the "My Pictures" files from the drives; all files between 2016 and 2012 were not imported into the LR catalog (The "My pictures" content files are named by dates, year_month_day).
LR is installed on a 250 gig SSD, and the catalog is also located there. (I have used PS with mirrored arrays since Windows 2000 and BX-133 MBs and PS5,)
(when the 8 bit panos go missing, they are missing from windows too)

  • Can I restore deleted keywords in Bridge CS5?

I accidentally deleted a long string of keywords in Bridge and I don't even remember what they all were. Any way to get them back?

Not that I know of.  HOWEVER, if you did not delete the keywords on the photos, when you visit a folder with those deleted keywords it will write them back to the list.  If they are itacalized, they are temporary, or right click on them and choose persistent.
The filter tab should show you what keywords are the current folder.
