Delete old text messages and iMessages in iOS 5.1?

On my iPhone, I noticed that the "Other" file in iTunes had grown.  I also remember hearing that "Other" was your app data (like Angry Birds high scores), Text messages/iMessages, and so on.  I was wondering if it was possible to delete older Messages (pursay any messages older then a month ago) and not the newer ones.  Please let me know.  Thanks.

Other includes data such as iPhone settings, contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cache/cookies, all email and email attachments, SMS/MMS/iMessages, notes, data created and stored by a 3rd party apps.  You could go through and delete older messages but I doubt that would reduce the size of Other very much.  If Other is getting quite larege (> 2 gigs) then it's possible that it is corrupted.  If this is the case you backing up your phone and restoring it will often fix this.  Follow this guide if you wish to do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414.

Connect the phone directly to the computer, not a hub.
Disconnect all other USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    Disable your firewall
    Disable your antivirus
In iTunes if it recognizes the phone click "Restore"
If it doesn't recognize the phone:
Disconnect the phone from the phone end, leave the USB cable plugged into the computer
Hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons until the screen turns black, excactly 10 seconds, then release the SLEEP but continue holding the HOME (If an Apple logo appears you have held SLEEP too long; do it over)
While holding HOME connect the cable to the phone
As soon as iTunes recognizes the phone release the HOME button and it should restore.
If neither procedure works note the exact error message and post it.

  • Problem sending text messages and imessages

    Hi,
I have been having some problems with my iphone 5 when sending and receiving text messages and imessages. When i go to send a text or imessage it will take a long time for the message to try to send through, then it comes up with message failure. I have full reception and internet connection and the phone is runing on the lastest ios7.1.2, everything is working in that respect. Sometimes it will freeze my whole inbox and i end up having to turn my phone off and on again to unfreeze it. It has also started taking a long time to receive messages, i will get a message and it will say that it was received 30mins ago when its only just shown up on my phone. I am also having problems deleting messages, as it freezes whenever i try to delete them.
Any suggestions on what to do?

Help! I have an iPhone 4s, I accidentally deleted a text message and my phone is not synced. How do I retrieve it?

You can not retrieve a deleted message that was not synced.
There are data recovery services that "may" be able to retrieve the message.
These recovery services can cost $1000 or more though.

  • Text messages and imessages marked as delivered yet not received since last update. I cannot make sense of the troubleshooting page, why does this complex machine not just work?.

I updated my iphone -again, and now my girlfriend (and who knows who else) is not reliably receiving messages. I try sending as iMessage and as SMS and have iMessage checked in my options and send as text message if iMessage doesn't work also checked. It was working fine, I updated, now it's patchy at best and although messages are marked as delivered they aren't and I don't know unless I phone the recipient up. Have tried restarting, resetting and digging through the trouble shooting pages... Apple products used to just work, now my phone is like a puzzle that I have to solve. I'm ditching apple in October when my contract is up but would like to send texts in the meantime, any ideas?

Awesomez. Thanks apple support community, very helpful indeed. About as helpful as a phone that stops sending texts after the manufacturers update it. No worries though, I got a HTC yesterday, put my sim in and guess what? It works. Close this thread down thanks mods.

  • Can't send text message only iMessages on iOS 8

Afree I updated to IOS 8 I can only send imessages. Once you start a imessage conversation it stays as iMessage even after you turn off your wifi and data. This only occurs for people that have iPhones though! I have tried resetting the network settings, restarting my phone, and deleting the conversation.

I am having the same issue I thing what the guy is trying to say is if you're sending messages to someone that has the same phone it will automatically send as an iMessages. but if the person is not connected to wifi or data you need to send it as SMS. So Im trying to send it as SMS but it will stay as an iMessage."We all know if the recipient is not connected to wifi he/she can not receive the imessage"
so the question here how to change it as sms?
here's what I did so far....
    turn off/turn on
    settings/iMessages off
    settings/iMessages on/send as sms on
    Still does the same thing...
the only thing that I'm seeing is when you send it immediately tap and hold onto the bubble and it will popup option send it as sms
but what is the function of "Send as SMS Turned on" it says there send as SMS when iMessage is unavailable. Carrier messaging rates may apply.?

  • How to recover deleted sms text messages using iMessage.

I accidently deleted an entire text conversation on my iPhone, and would like to recover it.  I understand I can restore a backup from iCloud but the last back I made was over 6 months ago and I do not want to lose the last 6 months of data when i back up the whole phone. But i noticed that in iMessage (on my macbook air) the entire conversation I want to restore is still there. Does anyone know of a way to either....
    1. Restore the iPhone SMS conversation using the iMessage version  or
    2. Restore only SMS conversations with iCloud without replacing the rest of the phone data
    thanks.

    1. no
    2. restoring from a backup is all or nothing.

  • When transferring from a 3GS to a Iphone 5, will my old text messages transfer?

I'm transferring from a 3GS to a new IPhone 5. Will my old text messages and emails transfer via the cloud or from my computer?
    Thanks.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
"Messages (iMessage and carrier SMS or MMS pictures and videos)."
The messages should transfer, and the emails are attached to the email server so your inboxes will come back as well.

  • Delete many text messages at once

Okay, I've done some reading. And this is honestly a BASIC feature that needs to be implemented into the iPhone. Blackberry can do it. Android can do it. Windows phone can do it. Yet the iPhone cannot?
I have to honestly delete every single message thread one by one? I have over 2,000 people who texted me since last year 2012. And they're all there, sitting in my phone, slowing it down. I will not swipe my finger 2,000 times to get this done.
There has to be another way to highlight a large portion of my old text messages, and delete them all at once?

Well, next time delete it once you are finished not wait till you've 2000. iPhone do things differently than other phones.

  • How can i view old text messages?

I was trying to look back at old text messages and I was able to view ones back to february 2014 but it appears the more texts messages I exchange with that person, I'm not allowed to scroll back as far.  If I delete some messages will I be able to scroll back further in that message thread?
If i turn on apple backup to the cloud, will I be able to view the messages going back that far/
My settings are set to keep messages forever.
Please advise and thank you in advance.

If they are deleted and not in your backup file, then you cannot recover them.

  • Getting back text messages and videos

My iphone was freezing up, so I restored it. I was able to sync and get everything back except my old text messages and a few videos is there anyway I can get them back?

Moving from a BlackBerry to an Android, there is no "direct" backup file type that will accomplish this.  I've used Verizon's Backup Assistant to transfer contacts from a BB Bold to an Android OS phone without any issues.
Text messages are something else.  If you are using Verizon's Integrated messaging app, you can back up your texts and then restore them on the new device. There may be other third party texting apps that allow backups as well.

  • Permanently deleting iPhone text messages... impossible without 3rd party software?

Am I correct in assuming there is currently NO possible way to permanently delete iPhone text messages and attachments unless you without either A. using 3rd party software that costs loads of money, or B. completely wiping your phone? This is seriously not available on these phones with all the other advanced features and tech?
It saves gigs of txt messages and attachments permanently that takes up all of the space on your phone... I just have a hard time believing this issue hasn't been addressed....

If the amount of storage for your Messages is not decreasing when you delete some (or all), then you need to try resetting your device to see if it will clear it up. I just went to my device and checked the amount of storage being used by Messages (13 MB). Then I deleted the 6 messages I had, and went back to check the Usage. It is now 3 MB.
To reset your device (nothing will be lost): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the Slide to Unlock screen displays, check your usage again.

  • Can't delete old facebook messages

    Hi,
I updated my facebook application recently, and now my phone is running very slowly.  I have restarted the phone, and I have removed and replaced the battery.  This hasn't helped.  In addition I continue to get facebook icons, showing unopened facebook posts.  When I scroll through all of my messages to find the unopened icon, it is the same one that keeps showing up.  I open it.  The icon goes away.  I attempt to delete old facebook messages, and my phone won't let me.  I have even tried to figure out how to delete the facebook app, but this isn't working.  Anyone have any advice?
    Thanks!

You can delete the Facebook application at Options > Advanced > Applications.
Scroll to Facebook and press the Menu key > Delete.
The, do a simple reboot on the BlackBerry in this manner:
With the BlackBerry device POWERED ON, remove the battery for a minute, and then reinsert the battery to reboot. A reboot in this manner is prescirbed for most gltiches and operating system errors, and you will lose no data on the device doing this.
