Delete Originals after Import

When I import into iPhoto - once the import is completed, it asks if I want to delete the Originals (which I generally do!).
Does Aperture have the same feature - and if so - where ('cause I can't find it!).
Thanks.

Supposedly, but people here have reported that 2.0 doesn't delete originals off the card, even when you tell it to.
Frankly, my best advice is to not ever do this. Just manually format in the card when you use it. You'll have fewer issues this way (the camera is the only thing that TRULY knows what format it wants to use), and you have a backup if something should go wrong -- until you erase the card in the camera. If you ever have a situation where an import goes wrong and then the importing app does it anyway (I had this happen with iPhoto a few years back and lost some images), you'll NEVER have your importing app delete images automatically again.

  • Deleting iPhoto after import to aperture

    Hi,
After importing my iPhotos into Aperture can i then delete all the iPhotos?
    Thanks
    iMac 24"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

They would have been moved into the Aperture library unless you specified that they not be in Aperture's Preferences.
One way to check is to select an image and then see if "Show if Finder" is availiabe in the File menu. If it is, you can see where the file is stored, if it isn't, the file is in the Aperture library and you can delete the version in iPhoto.
Of course you could always back up the iPhoto version to DVD just to have one more backup. More is better when it comes to backups.

  • Deleting images after importing

Aperture 2.0 won't delete images from the card after importing. I click the button to delete and eject, and then in the confirmation dialog again I click delete, but it quietly ejects the card with no errors and all of my images are still on it.
I'm using an 8GB SDHC card with a SanDisk USB reader. My camera is a Nikon D40x.

I'm getting frustrated (and somewhat annoyed) at the inability of Aperture 2.0 to delete images from a memory card.
Users that claim they don't get this option might like to set the "display alert when done" option in the Import panel. Once this is set, then the program displays an alert following successful import. There is the option to delete the imported images from the memory card.
The delete option worked flawlessly on versions 1.1 through to 1.5, but is now broken.
For reference, I'm using the new SanDisk Extreme IV Firewire (800) CF reader, and have been using a SanDisk Extreme III 4GB compact flash card.

  • Upgrade D300 to D700 : request to delete pictures after import

    Hi,
I've recently upgraded from a D300 to a D700. After importing my pictures from the D300 into Aperture (via USB cable), Aperture always asked me whether I wanted to delete the pictures from the camera.
I noticed that when doing the same with the D700, Aperture does not ask this question after import.
Is this is known difference and is there any way to work around it (except for formatting the memory card after import)? I do know the USB mode/file system of the D700 is different from the D300, this might be related to the behaviour noticed.
    Thanks in advance.

I'm a Canon shooter so I don't really know, but the camera may not allow that operation. You probably would not experience this with a card reader.
The option to erase the card being available but not working is a known issue, but you'll find that most people here don't recommend using that option anyway.
It's really best to let the camera reformat the card so that it's formatted by the camera that's going to shoot it. Another reason not to use this option is that the images should be backed up before the card is erased.
Most would recommend that you import using a card reader, back up the images then reformat the card in the camera. Some recommend not importing directly from the camera or the card but copying the files to the hard drive then importing from there to avoid card corruption.

  • Can I make sub-events in iPhoto? Can I delete originals of imported photos?

    1) Is there any way I can make sub-events? I have pictures of family members, grouped by one event per member. Is it possible to have a Family event, and then sub events for each member? Is this better addressed through albums?
    2) When I download an image from the web to my hard drive and later import it to iphoto, can I delete the originally saved file without affecting the image's place in iphoto?
    Thank you for your help,

No - there are no sub events - events are time based not subject based
Is this better addressed through albums?
Yes - or keywords and smart albums - what you want is a family folder with albums (smart or otherwise) for each member
    2) When I download an image from the web to my hard drive and later import it to iphoto, can I delete the originally saved file without affecting the image's place in iphoto?
Yes - assuming that you are using the default (and highly recommended) "copy items to the iPhoto library" preference being checked (if it is not then you can not delete the "original")
It is not a bad idea to back up your originals and also you should make regular backups of the iPhoto library - and use Old Toad's library6.iPhoto database file backup very often while you are loading and editing photos

  • Delete photos after import into iPhoto

Is it possible to delete the photos on the mac after they have been imported to iphoto?

Yes, if you're running a default Managed Library. In that scenario the file are copied into the iPhoto Library on import.
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Delete photo after imported into iPhoto?

I'm trying not to have duplicate photos staying on the same harddrive after I import them into iPhoto.
So, can I archive the original photo off my hard drive to an external after I import them into iPhoto?
I know it's perhaps a silly easy question, but I thought that I would ask before I start moving pictures off to my external drive.
    Many thanks,

Assuming that you are using the default (and very strongly recommended) managed library you have no need to keep the source image

  • Is there a way to set PSE7 to delete originals after editing a photo?

When I edit a photo - crop it, resize it, adjust red eye or do a quick fix on a photo, it saves the original photo as well as the edited photo. I am looking for a setting to change so that I can delete the original photo and just save the edited photo. How do I do this?

May I point out that most people think that deleting the originals is a terrible idea. You can never go back and start fresh, subsequent JPGs are lower quality than the original; and on and on...

  • Videos deleted shortly after importing

    Hello everyone,
I'm trying hard to migrate my photo collection from iPhoto (and eventually Aperture, which I still use for professional work) to the new Photos app.
What I have noticed, though, is that, besides all photos from iPhone being imported rotated 180°, which is (annoyingly) fixable by hand, Photos will just delete videos from its catalogue. Needless to say, they open fine in iPhoto.
    Basically:
On first launch (or consequent start-ups of the app when deleting the Photos library), Photos asks to import a library.
It goes through the import process.
All files are imported correctly (besides the 180° issue), including videos, which play back normally.
Under Preferences, I set the library as System library (in case I deleted the previous Photos library), and turn on the iCloud Photo Library feature.
Somewhere along the process, when I try to access some videos, it says "Photos can't reproduce the file" (translation from my OS X language). In some other videos, a small progress wheel appears on the bottom right, and gets stuck at about one quarter.
I have also tried to import everything by opening manually the "Masters" folder in the old iPhoto library, but then, Photos will give an error regarding duplicate files.
Honestly, all these problems are so un-Apple-like. I'm very frustrated; I've tried to give Photos a chance, but I can't even START using it.
    Any suggestions?

    Sorry, wrong section; please delete.

  • Delete images after import

I used to have this set up to 2.02 Now with 3.03 it doesn't work any more an I cannot find the setting to put it back on?

    Allan,
I have spent a lot of time today (probably too much! ) looking for sources for my earlier comment. It is my belief that the information to which I referred was in a photography magazine. I tend to read things like *Questions to the Expert* and think it was in one of those answers. Unfortunately, I recycle my magazines and no longer have access to them. I did a lot of Google searching and found comments which were on both sides of this issue. Some agreed with what I remember reading. Deleting files in camera on the run can cause memory card problems. Others said that was just a nutty idea. None of these opinions were from well known credible sources I'd put money on. However, I am going to continue to avoid deleting more than a minimal number of images in camera just to be safe. (I think the camera LCD monitor is a poor place to make image quality judgements unless they a really gross anyway.)
Like you I reformat in the camera in which the card will be used before the next use. I'd like to think that provides a clean space for the files on my next shoot.
    Happy shooting!
    Jerry
As far as fragmentation goes, personally I don't see that as an serious problem with the way I used my CompactFlash cards. I always start a shoot with a CF card that has been newly formatted in the camera I am using. Generally my shoots run into the hundreds of RAW photos while any deleted photos are generally in single digits, very rarely may exceed ten. The amount of fragmentation that can develop on a newly formatted card and that few deletions would be very small.

  • Delete from memory card after import

    Hi,
I'm a fresh Lightroom newbie, and I am missing how to delete pictures from a memory card as I am importing them into Lightroom. This seems a glaringly obvious feature, so it must be hiding somewhere.
The only options I can see in the "Import Photos" dialog are
    - Copy photos to a new location and import
    - Copy photos as Digital Negative (DNG) and import
There doesn't seem to be an option to delete files after import, just various ways to eject the card.
I've found one way if I choose "Import Photos from Disk" while in Lightroom, there I have a Move option, but why not from device? Every other photo importer has this.
    Thanks,
    Zak

Thanks for your responses. I'll go ahead and use "Import photos from disk" and change to my card reader. I personally had no problems in my years reading & immediately deleting files from memory cards. I had a few instances where I inadvertently deleted a fresh imported picture on the computer, I used undelete utilities on the card in these cases.
That said, I still think it would be a good feature. If the users want to do it (2 years of questions), just let them.

  • Recover deleted files after Aperture Import

I opted to delete movies after importing to Aperture from my iPhone 5s.  I got an import error and the files were deleted.  I tried a recovery utility found many but not these deleted files.  Where did they go?  Can I get them back?

Where did you find them in the Aperture Library six levels down? In the folder "Masters" or in a folder "Importing"?  If it is Masters", they have been imported correctly,  and you should find them in Aperture, when you search in Aperture with a rule "File Type" is video,
If they are inside a folder "Importing", the import has not finished correctly, and it would be safer to copy this folder to the Desktop and to try to import the videos again.

  • Converting files to dng after import

Hi. Brand-new Lightroom 5 user here. I don't remember the dialog box showing up to ask me at the time of import whether I wanted the pics imported as dng files or not. Now that they're imported, is there a way to tell if they are already dng? I also know how to convert them one at a time, but is there a way to just have them all converted at once? (There are a few hundred.) Also I'm being asked whether I want to only convert RAW files (I'm guessing that this is the case, but let me know if I'm wrong here). And if I want to delete originals after conversion (again, I think I do, but is there a compelling reason not to delete? Can you tell I'm not a professional photographer?)
    Thanks much for your help.

Hi. Brand-new Lightroom 5 user here. I don't remember the dialog box showing up to ask me at the time of import whether I wanted the pics imported as dng files or not.
    See screen capture.
Now that they're imported, is there a way to tell if they are already dng?
When you have one of the files selected the .dng extention will be displayed.
I also know how to convert them one at a time, but is there a way to just have them all converted at once? (There are a few hundred.)
Sellect the files in the grid view Library module and use the Library menu to select "convert to dng" see the screen capture.
Also I'm being asked whether I want to only convert RAW files (I'm guessing that this is the case, but let me know if I'm wrong here).
There is really little benefit in converting jpeg or tiff files to dng.
And if I want to delete originals after conversion (again, I think I do, but is there a compelling reason not to delete?
If you are using only Adobe products then you may never have use for the original raw files. However your camera manufacturers software and some other raw conversion software will not work with dng files. I am not a user of dng so my opinion is to always retain a copy of your raw files.
My main reason for shooting raw is to retain the original data for the benefit of utilizing further advancements in raw conversion software in the future, including software that does not support dng files.
Can you tell I'm not a professional photographer?)
No, as far as I am concerned there are many professionals and amateurs that may not know the answers to your questions.

  • Deleting originals

I've searched the forum to find an answer to my question and it seems like I'm not the only one.
So I was wondering if someone knows how to delete originals after you've edited pictures in iPhoto. I only rotate pictures, and it's very annoying that it takes up twice the space.
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The only way to do that without damaging the library is to export the rotated version to the desktop, reimport and then delete the first version from within iPhoto. OR, rotate them before importing with an application like QuickImage which is a contextual menu application. You can preview and do some minimal editng on images by Control-clicking on them. Then import to iPhoto.

  • Imported photos gone after import

    Hey guys,
I have a HUGE problem. The day before yesterday I imported around 300 pictures from my canon cam into iPhoto. Since my memory card is pretty small I checked "delete pictures after import". I looked at the pictures in my iphoto library, and they were properly imported. Yesterday when I tried to import new photos I noticed that the photos I imported the day before that were gone. All images lost BUT the events are in the library, empty of course.
I double saved the new pictures and imported them - they also were properly imported, but when I quit iPhoto and reopened it, they were gone aswell.
Does anyone know how I can get my pictures back? Already tried photorec on the SD-card - it restored the wrong pictures.
Thank you so much, all help is highly appreciated.

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD
