Delete Silence in Stereo Clips

I'm alternating spoken-word recordings on left and right microphones on a stereo track, and want to be able to silence the left audio when the right voice is talking, and vice versa.  Can Delete Silence do this on a stereo track?  Or would I need to split it into mono clips first?  In my tests on a stereo clip, it only finds sections where BOTH tracks are quiet.
Using 5.5 but plan to upgrade
==== since writing my first note, I find that when I split the stereo into mono tracks and identify  those off-mic sections, the Delete Silence function does NOT just mute the sections; it cuts them out and shortens the clip.  It works exactly the same whether I have "delete silence" or "shorten silence" selected.  Evidently, I'm doing something wrong here!
thanks for your help

Am I misreading this?
You must be. Here is the relevant section from the Audition CS5.5 help file (I have bolded the relevant line) :
Create silence
Creating silence is useful for inserting pauses and removing nonessential noise from an audio file. Adobe Audition provides two ways to create silence:
•To mute existing audio in the Waveform Editor, select the desired content, and choose Effects > Silence. Unlike deleting or cutting a selection, which splices the surrounding material together, muting leaves the duration of the selection intact.
•To add silence in the Waveform or Multitrack Editor, either position the current-time indicator or select existing audio. Then choose Edit > Insert >Silence, and enter the number of seconds. Any audio to the right is pushed out in time, lengthening duration. Multitrack clips are split if necessary.
And, it's always been like that. 'Delete' means exactly what it says - get rid of from the file completely, not just reduce all the sample values to a mid-point level, which is what muting is.

  • Delete Silence and Mark Audio options

Hi first an excerpt from the help page:
    "Fix By (Delete Silence only)
Choose Shortening Silence to reduce silent passages to the specified number of milliseconds. Choose Deleting Silence to mute silent passages but retain file length. (Deleting silence helps maintain video synchronization with audio clips in video editing applications.)"
This option actually doesn't work that way. When you click 'Delete All' it physically deletes the pauses, in consequence shortening the file. Any chances for fixing this to work as intended - so applying mute on the silent parts?

"you can't really Mute sections that are already Silent"
So that's really the point. I don't want to mute digital silence - I'd like to mute parts that are bellow a certain threshold that I can set.
I particularly like the Diagnostics sections because it gives you the freedom to make some fine adjustments before you mute or process anything - when using noise gate you really don't have that flexibility.
"Perhaps what we need is a method of reducing the level of all audio selected by the detect "Silence" produced Markers."
I guess that would be a cool feature allowing additionally to batch process more files. But I guess that for now it would be really great to have a Mute option in the Diagnostics. Given that you can easily 'Delete silence' by choosing in the 'Fix by' the 'Shortening Silence' option and choosing 0ms.

  • Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion. Help??

Suddenly my event library in iMovie 11 is empty.  I have tried deleting the plist, importing clips from multiple locations (to see if they show up in the library), re-installing iMovie, and re-installing Mountain Lion.
I was working on a project, when all of a sudden the event library went blank.  There are no devices showing in the left column, only "last import" and "aperture videos".  There are no video clips in the editing window.  I have "Show: All Clips" selected.  I've tried "group events by disk".
When I have a Project open, it plays just fine.  There are no yellow triangles saying "source clip is missing".  Yet, again...nothing is in the event library large editing window.  So, it seems the data is still there, but invisible.  This is true with all the projects, and all the external devices I've experimented by plugging in to see if their video clips show up in the event library.
I have tried to import new movies, and iMovie responds as normal...looking like it's importing, then "generating thumbnails", then it makes the "ding" signalling that the import is complete...but nothing shows in the event library.  I've tried importing movies from the harddrive, from quicktime, and from an external drive.
I have searched the forums, and found many users with a similar, but not the same, problem.  For them, it seems the "go to users-library-preferences and delete iMovie plist" has solved their problem.  This didn't work for me.
I uninstalled/reinstalled iMovie, I even have re-installed Mountain Lion (from a last-ditch effort suggestion from Apple technician).
HERE'S AN INTERESTING DETAIL:  After almost 5 hours on the phone with Apple, I decided to cut my losses and take my project to another Mac I have.  I'm working on a project, for work, that is critical that it's completed by tonight (whoops), and all my video is on an external drive.  So, I plug in the external drive to Mac #2, open iMovie, and everything is looking fine.  I continue importing some files I was converting, through Wondershare, and suddenly (whether or not this has to do with the importing, I'm not sure), the SAME THING happened to Mac #2!!!!  I can't believe this.
Does anyone have any suggestions?  Have you ever heard of this happening?  Could it have to do with the files I'm importing???
I apologize if my language is confusing.  Obviously, I'm not an Apple genius-person!  I hope I've provided all the information you need.
    Mac #1 is a 27" desktop, mid-2012, software up-to-date.  Mac #2 is a 24" desktop, about 4 years old, OSX 10.7.5

    I'm adding more information:
in Finder, my iMovie folders are all visible and accessible.  When I click on a clip from iMovie Events folder, Quicktime opens and plays the clip.  ALL my video is not missing - it just isn't showing up in the Event Library!
This happened all of a sudden, while I was working on iMovie project (on both computers).
All my Projects are intact, and play when I open them.

  • How do I invert a selection in iMovie 11/ delete unused portions of clips

I want to delete unused portions of clips:
In iMovie 11 an orange bar appears at the bottom of a clip to show that that portion of the clip is being used in a project.
If I click on the orange bar, the yellow clip selection extends to that portion of the clip.
I want to invert the selection so that the portion of the clip that is not used is selected so that I can reject it and later delete unused portions.
If there is another way to do that then great...
    Thanks
    David

I think it might be easier to first finish the project with all that extra video clip lying around and then use the Space Saver to tidy things up. It's under the File Menu and is always done at the very end when you have already Finalized your project.
    From the iMovie Help:
In the Event Library, select one or more Events.
To select more than one Event at a time, press Command as you click Event names.
    Choose File > Space Saver.
The File menu appears in a light gray bar across the top of your computer screen.
    Select any of the following:
To reject all of the video that hasn’t been added to an iMovie project, select “Not added to any project.”
To reject all of the video that you haven’t marked as “favorite,” select “Not marked as Favorite.”
To reject all of the video that you haven’t marked with a keyword, select “Not marked with a keyword.”
Click “Reject and Review.”The view changes to show only the rejected clips in the selected Events.
*Note: This is not the full listing of Help for the Space Saver function but you get the idea. It seems as though Apple thinks it's a much better use of your time to put off the house keeping tasks like cleaning up unused video until after you have Finalized the project.

  • How to delete silence in batch process using Audition CS6

I've started using Audition CS6 recently.
I'm able to delete silence at the beginning and end of the source audio files using delete silence effect (from diagnostics window).
I'm not able to record this as new favorite so that I can apply it in the batch process.
How can I delete silence at the beginning and end of the source audio files (1000 or more files) using batch process?
It will be of great help if I can get guidance on this, instead of manually editing these files.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

yes, the favorite is not aware of the diagnostic panel (and delete silence action).
and the silence at the beginning and end varies between the files, is there any way to deal with?
it doesn't look productive to scan for the silence and delete the silences manually for each individual file (for more than 1000 files).
can we create a macro or use some scripting in audition to deal with this in a batch process?
Or is there any other tool that's recommended to have this part done in a reliable manner?

Is there a recomended way to delete proxy and optimized clips once a project is completed and is ready for archive? also, can proxy and optimized clips be removed (to save space) once a project is ready for color correction and the original clips are used

No, they are NOT the same as proxy or optimized.
When you add a clip to your timeline and, say, apply an effect to it, or superimpose a title on the clip, FCP X has to make many calculations to determine what color each pixel of each frame should be. If a section of your timeline is not rendered, it has to do all these calculations every time you play those frames. A render file has the frames already "calculated", so it plays fast and smoothly.
For simple compositions and a fast computer, you may avoid rendering completely - and you may also choose to only render the portions where playback stutters.
Render files can be safely deleted. FCP X can recreate them if needed (either automatically if you have "background render" on, or on demand, when you select the "render" or "render all" commands).

  • Clips deleting themselves in Compound Clips

I have been editing compound clips and when I get half way through i notice early clips in the timeline are missing.  So if there is clips ABCD in a connected clip, it will be now AC and the other clips are now gone.  I've pressed undo until i saw when they were deleted and it seems when i'm selecting clips later in the timeline it selects earlier clips and deletes them with the clips i want to delete.  This is causing a major headache as it seems to be random, I can't replicate it on demand, but it happens eventually in ever compound clip I create.  I haven't noticed it while editing a project.  Any idea what is going on would help.
    Thanks.

    I am using 10.1.1 on OS X 10.9.3 Mavricks.
Here are two screenshots the first is how the timeline should look and the second is with the clips missing.

  • Delete silence

I bought in iTunes Music Store "The Rite of Spring" of I. Stravinsky...all is ok but some tracks must are without silence between each track and it's impossible ?? to delete silence (click).
I set in preferences nothing silence between each track but there is always a little click...
    How make this ?
    Thank you for yours answers

The best settings for gapless playback I have found, is to check 'Crossfade playback:' (Lecture en fondu:) and set it to 0 seconds (Préférences>Lecture).
It's not perfect and there are still very short pauses between some tracks.
    Hope this helps.

  • IMovie freezing on deletion or move of clips to a different event

    Hello,
I'm trying to clean up and reorganize my events in order for more efficiency in making my current project. The project is only 7 minutes long and I'm going to trim it down; I have 3 other completed 3-minute projects in my project library, as well (I don't know if this information matters but there you go).
All of a sudden yesterday iMovie started freezing (showing the rainbow pinwheel, the bane of my existence) whenever I tried to move clips from one event to another, or to delete rejected clips. The first few times it happened I tried waiting to see if it would eventually unfreeze and perform the task I wanted it to, but it always crashed. I thought maybe it was a space issue (I am often low on space) so I just freed up 25 gigs on my hard drive, but to no avail: iMovie is still freezing upon deletion or move of clips.
Anyone had this problem before and/or know what to do to fix it? I just don't understand why this is suddenly happening and I'm worried the problem is going to spread to other areas!

i did, yes. but it wasn't imovie content - it was some old files that i wasn't using anymore. i just backed them up onto my external then deleted them from the computer. and did empty the trash

  • How can I delete a .mpg video clip that has been "processing" for weeks?

Weeks ago I loaded a 380mb .mpg video clip using Express Loader that is still "processing". I want to delete it but cannot because the software produces an error message notifying me that I can't delete it until processing is complete. Obviously the "processing" is stuck. Suggestions on how to get rid of it? Thank you.

Have you seen recent email from Adobe about how Photoshop.com service is being transitioned to Adobe Revel?  It is actually no longer possible to upload new files to photoshop.com.  I checked your account and see the migration process has been initiated, which is probably why you do not see behavior you expect.

  • Can't delete events, or rejected clips, and now hangs on startup

I am using, as far as I know, the latest version 7.1.1. I first started having problems when I couldn't delete a couple of events. I them selected some clips to be rejected, and it marked them appropriately with the red bar. However, it will not allow me to delete these rejected clips. Now the problems are getting worse and I cannot even get '08 to start with hanging up and then I must force it to quit.
I should mention that I between having all these issues I have installed iMovie HD and been using that but for ENTIRELY different clips etc. I have not been sharing things back and forth. HD seems to be working as it should.
I am new to Mac', about 3 months now, and have been using iMovie'08 for a few weeks and found it to be very good. I started to have some problems and found the whole debate about iMovie '08 compared to iMovie HD. All that aside, although I can see how HD has better features than '08, can someone point me in the right direction to get things up and running again.
    Thanks very much.

Sorry, I should have added this error message that I get when trying to move the rejected clips to the trash:
The operation could not be completed. * -[NSPlaceholderMutableDictionary initWithObjects:forKeys:]: number of objects (0) not equal to number of keys (4)
Perhaps this will help someone with nailing down what the issue is.
    Thanks again.

  • How to delete several spaces between clips on timeline

I have hundreds of clip selects in my timeline pulled on a particular track.  However, they have spaces between all of them.  How do I delete all of the spaces, so that I can view the clips back to back.  I don't want to have to click on each space & hit delete a hundred times.  In FCP you could just pull a clip to a separate track at the end & higlight the space from the beginning of the sequence to that clip + hold down the delete..  It would delete, delete, delete quickly, closing the gaps on other tracks where possible.
How can I do that efficiently in PremPro?!
    TIA,

  • Premiere CC keeps crashing when moving or deleting a group of clips

    Hello,
I am getting this weird bug where Premiere CC keeps crashing when I am trying to delete or move (either by using drag'n drop or cut-and-paste*) a selected group of clips on the timeline.
The sequence is set to QT ProResHQ for video previews to match the codec of the video files, so this couldn't explain this issue.
Here is the error message I am getting everytime:
Premiere Pro has encountered an error.
    [/ppro721/releases/2013.10/shared/adobe/MediaCore/Backend/Make/Mac/../../Src/Sequence/Pers istentGroupContainer.cpp-279]
    * Copy-paste does work though, that's my workaround for the moment: I copy the selected group of clips, then delete the "originals" one by one, because Premiere crashes only when I am trying to delete or move more than one clip at a time...
Even though I have found a temporary workaround for this weird problem, it's really frustrating as it keeps happening randomly throughout the sequence (not all clips on the same timeline are affected by this), and it complicates the execution of such basic operations  as deleting or moving clips around on a timeline.
Any help is welcome, as I keep wasting a lot of precious editing time with this issue.
    Thank you.

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 9 running on and are you running the 9.0.1 Update version of the program. Just background information.
To each of the three groups, have you first applied the Group option under the Clip Menu? If so, you do not use Alt or Ctrl. You click and drag the selected/highlighted Group to where you want it. Doing that, to the extreme, I can move the Groups including dragging Group 2 over Group 3 to place Group 2 after Group 3 and no disturbances.
But you must wait the the Group to be selected/highlighted completely before you move it.
However, could it be that you have lost control of your project for resource reasons. Besides the 24 tracks high and the body of the tracks in three Groups, what is the duration of this project? Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 is a 32 bit application whether it is run on a 32 bit or 64 bit computer, and the limitations include max supported installed RAM = 4 GB of which 3.2 to 3.0 or less of that are available.
    Please review and consider.
    Thank you.

  • Deleting animation within a clip  (PE-7)

I am unable to delete animation from the middle of a wedding clip; transferred from VHS.
All information I have found refers to deleting an entire clip.
Would someone kindly advise on the procedure to do same. Would surely appreciate any assistance. Also, how do I zoom the Time line? The + key does not make the adjustment needed. Thanks!!!

Is the animation part of the original tape or was it applied in Premiere Elements?
Is it a sequence you want to remove, or the effect?
And how did you get the VHS into your computer?

  • Mono audio in stereo clips...

I have several video clips in my current iMovie project that were recorded using a mono microphone. The problem is that these are on a stereo track and aren't recognised as mono by iMovie. The result is that, for all clips recorded with an external mic, I only get audio in the left channel.
Is there any way I can fix this in iMovie or do I have to extract audio for each and every clip and fix them manually in a sound editor?
    Thanks in advance,
    -fh

"..do I have to extract audio for each and every clip and fix them manually in a sound editor?.."
    Yup.
'Audacity' is a free audio editor, and lets you do just that.
In iMovie HD, 'Extract' the audio, as you suggest, then double-click the extracted clip(s) to see what iMovie calls it (them) ..possibly "Voice 01", or some such. [..In iMHD6 it'll be called "Extracted audio 01", probably..]
Then, in your audio editor, navigate to the name of your project, and look - if you've been using iMovie HD 5 - in the 'Media' folder inside your movie project's folder. In there, you'll find "Voice 01", or whatever it is.
Then copy the left channel (if that's what's been recorded) to the right channel, as shown here (click on Start Slideshow to get larger images)..
You can also, apparently, do that copying and pasting in GarageBand ..though I haven't tried that.
[..In iMovie HD 6 the procedure to find the extracted audio files is slightly different, as they're contained in a "package" which you have to right-click (Ctrl-click) to find them. But in iMHD5 it's much simpler..]
