Delete Sleepimage orphaned on external drive

I have an external disc that contained a bootable backup of a previous computer. I now wish to use this external disc as an archive of items from that previous computer. When I removed all the unneeded files from the disc and de-fragmented it (iDefrag) there was a "sleepimage' file remaining from the original disc.
How can I access and delete this file from the external disc? It is not the sleepimage that would be deleted if I changed settings in the terminal, as that would only affect the current sleepimage on the current System drive. I can see (in iDefrag) that the image location is /private/var/vm/sleepimage on the external drive, and is 9 gigs in size, but I have no idea how to gain access to it or remove it.
Suggestions? Thank you for looking and your comments.

Yes, but you can work on any volume in Terminal.
Launch Terminal then type
sudo rm (leave a space), then drag sleepimage from finder into your Terminal window, it will fill in the entire path to the item. Then press return.

  • Deleted Files disappeared from external drive but space is still occupied ( iMac )

    Hello all...
    I have this problem.
Whenever I delete items from my external hard drive, using iMac (running mavericks), the files disappear from the drive window but their space will be still occupied. if i format the drive using my mac, everything will disappear & the whole drive capacity would be available for use.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Luk

Unless you empty the trash while the external is attached, the files will remain in the trash. You will gain back your space after you empty it.

  • Windows 7 backup deleted music files on external drive

I did a Windows 7 backup to an external drive that also has my music library on it. My itunes folder still exists with all of the artist folders inside but all of my music files are now gone. Inside each folder are .ds_store files.  What happened to my music files?

Yes, annoying, wish it would just try to play the **** song whether it had an exclamation point or not.
It is trying to play the song, but it can't play it if it can't find it. If you were asked to get pasta from the top shelf and boil it, only to find the pasta wasn't where you were told it should be, you wouldn't be able to boil the pasta. Of course, you are a human so you could look on other shelves until you find the pasta, but a computer program doesn't know how to do this unless it has been programmed to do so.
Also, if you have your iTunes library database file on your internal drive, and the Media folder on the external drive, you will have the problem you described when the drive is disconnected. If you put all of the iTunes files on the external drive and keep the iTunes Media folder along with the database file, it won't forget the location of your media folder. Of course, you won't be able to open your library at all unless you have the drive connected.

  • Can't move/delete/create files on external drive created with windows xp

A friend of mine bought a brand new Maxtor External Hard drive. I connected it to my Windows XP machine and formatted it with NTFS and dumped 80Gig folder of data onto it.
When he took it home and plugged it into his Mac G5 running Tiger, it see's the firewire drive and accesses the folder, but he can't delete/move/rename/create files and folders on that drive.

I came across the same problem as well recently. I have thought about it for a long time but did not put it into practice. Yesterday I did it.
    1) Copying my data in XP disk out into my Powerbook which cost me a lot of time to wait
    2) In Windows XP, using Partition Magic (7.0) to delete the partition format of that disk (using the other tools should work as well)
    3) Plug this empty disk into my Powerbook, then it prompted that I need to format it or something like that
    4) Using Disk Utilities to format the disk as MS-DOS File Systems (FAT 32)
    5) Moving the original data into the new formatted disk which could be read and written by both Powerbook and PC.
Everything is done! This is only my personal experience, not a general solution plan for this problem. Cheers all!

  • Deleting files from an external drive...

I have one 250 GB internal drive (OS and other applications), one 500 GB internal drive (mostly image files), and several external hard drives of various sizes.
I tried to clear up some space on a couple of the drives (not the one with the OS) and even though the files are gone, finder shows zero files, I still don't have any free space and can't write any new files to the drive?
What the heck? I even tried erasing everything through Disk Utilities, and Repair, and nothing works...
I have seen similar problems posted in other forums, and no one seems to have an answer...
    Help, please!

Each drive has its own Trash folder (but Finder shows them all as one folder). Deleting a file just moves it to the Trash folder on three same drive, which is fast, as it just involves making some changes in the directory, not actually copying data. If the Trash folder was only on the primary drive, deleting a large file on a secondary drive would be slow, since it would have to be copied to the primary drive. It could also cause problems by using up space on the primary drive, or it might be too big to fit.
The problem drive might contain some hidden files. Look at it with Disk Utility. It should say how much space is really used, and how many files and folders are on the drive. If there isn't supposed to be anything on the drive, you could erase it (not Erase Free Space) with Disk utility.

  • Mavericks has deleted my partitions on external drive!

I have a GTech 4TB drive attached that had two partitions. Now it just sees the drive as 'MyBook' with no data. (Note: MyBook was an old drive that I no longer use). Help!
And how do I inform Apple, as I can'y fathom how to log it as a bug?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Pleas help with my music files and folders on an external drive

A while back, I thought I had a virus on my C drive and was advised to by an external hard drive to move all my important files and folders to. As an inexperienced computer guy, this eventually led to a problem. I have many folders that shouldn't have been moved, main folders that were broken up, duplicates of songs, some song files that are empty, etc. This doesn't just apply to iTunes folders, it includes all the computer's music folders.
Can you please help me reorganize and delete duplicates (C and external drives)? Is there a quick way to search for song files that will not work? Is there a way to wipe out all iTunes files and start over without losing the songs bought via itunes?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I think you're in the wrong forum. This is the iDVD forum. If I read your question correctly you probably want the iTunes for Windows forum.

  • Problem while transferring files within my external drive

    Hi!
I hope you can help me with my problem. Here's what happened:
I just copied a bunch of files from my MBA to my external drive and it went flawlessly. Then i tried to copy one file in the external drive to another folder when i was prompted that "the operation can't be completed because an item with the name " " already exists." I was puzzled, so i checked the folder, there's no such file in it. So i dragged the file again to the folder and assumed that it was transferred successfully because the file disappeared from the root folder, but there was no "transferred sound" when it was "moved." I tried with another file, same message. Dragged it again to another folder and i was prompted with an error but the file disappeared from the root folder. So again i assumed it was transferred. A few minutes later i opened the folder again but my file was nonexistent. I tried "unhiding" hidden files using Terminal, and yet it's still nowhere to be found. It is not in the Trash bin either. Is there some way that i could retrieve/recover this file? I fear that it might have been deleted permanently from my external drive! The file is very, very important for my work. Thanks very much to anyone who could help me with this. xx
    Some important info:
    Device: Macbook Air late 2013
HDD: Toshiba 1 TB (NTFS) -- I have Paragon v10.0.2 installed

Tuxera eh, you went from bad to worse.  That program brings new definition to the slang 'iffy'
Did you keep your resident file on your Air's SSD ?
never operate on a single backup #1
secondly, ext. HD are cheaper than dirt, purchase a couple and format them for your Mac, and unless its a necessity, dont use as a constant communication software for NTFS drives.
if you need a HD for PC / Mac, format one on your PC for EXFAT for read /writes / transfers to and from your PC and Mac.

  • Library/external drive question

Hi all. I think my cds are loading to both my C drive and the external. I set it to load to the E. My C drive reads nearly full. I tested by deleting an album, and it looks like it came off both drives. How do I load only to the E drive? I'm assuming that I set up something wrong. I need to delete everything off the C. Thanks!

Are you sure it's not just a link to the song on your C drive? A way to test this is to turn off your external drive. Try to play a song. If your computer can still play the song, the file is on both drives. If it can't and it wants you to search for the file, then you know the information on the C drive is just the file path to the song on your external drive.
If it turns out that the song files have been duplicated (are you adding file paths to the iTunes library OR paths and song files?), I would turn off my external drive and then delete all of the songs on your C drive. (That way you'll be sure not to delete anything on the external drive by mistake.) When you turn the external drive back on, iTunes may not know how to find your song files--if it was using the C drive. You'll have to browse to the external location for the songs to let iTunes know the new file path.

  • Complicated External drive problem.

Some time ago I moved my iTunes onto an external drive, and everything was wonderful... Then I began to have to hide the keyboard from my two year old and strange things began to happen. I have no idea what he may have done, if anything, but he is a useful scape-goat at this point.
Some playlists will no longer let me reorder the tracks, but some will; some tracks will not link to iPhoto slide shows, and some can not be removed, even with the link deleted from iPhoto completely; some tracks will link but then play in silence and some work perfectly...
My decision was to re-locate iTunes back to my iMac, delete it from the external drive and then put it back onto the external drive to see if that cleaned things up.
I went back to the link provided by Jolly Giant (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/moving-your-itunes-library-to -a-new-hard-drive) that I used for the first move (as my confidence level needs a set of instructions to follow)
However, while looking in finder to try and work out where I needed to put iTunes back to on the iMac, I noticed that there is an amount of music which is still in "iTunes/iTunes Music" on the iMac. Some of this is also on the External... and some is not. Only the tracks that "are" on the external are showing in iTunes.
I have "Keep iTunes Media folder organised" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" both ticked and the "iTunes Media folder location" is still set to the correct location on the External drive.
I therefore think (and please feel free to correct me) the first thing that I need to do is get the spurious tracks copied over to the External, and then delete everything from the iMac and start again.
However as I said above, my confidence level is not great and I am fearful of stuffing things up... So it would be really useful if someone could give me an idea of what settings I need to check, that may have lead to the problems in the first place, and also a walk through of what I should be doing to make the moves, deletions and re-moves, (IF that is what I should be doing any way)
    Many thanks,
    David.

I don't use iPhoto (and my version dates from ca. 8 years ago) so I don't know how it does any associations with what is in iTunes.
Ability to order within a playlist is determined by the sort column selected.  If any is selected except first one on the left then sorting is by that header, not manual.
I don't know how the tracks that are on your internal got there unless it is some relic of the earlier way iTunes organized music (read the link you referenced), but even then it doesn't explain why the music wasn't in iTunes.  That may lie in the history of how you used your computer.

  • Steps to put itunes (50 gb) on external drive and delete from imac.  How would I update my ipods and ipad from the external drive if I do this

I am planning to put itunes library on external hard drive. My Imac is running out of room and itunes is 50+ gb of music.
What steps do I take to do this.  Also, if I do so, how do I update my ipods and my ipad 2.  I do back up my files with time machine.  This would be a completely separate new external hard drive.  Thanks in advance for any help.

    Two ways:
    1. After transferring to the external drive create an alias to the iTunes Music folder on the external drive.  Copy the alias into your Home folder.  Rename the alias to "iTunes Music."  Delete the alias from the external drive.
    2. In the iTunes preferences click on the Advanced icon in the toolbar.  You should see a field labeled, "iTunes Media Folder Location."  Click on the Change button and select the /iTunes Music/ folder on the external drive.

  • Mac creates a save every hour, quickly filling the external drive. The "delete unnecessary files in Trash" does not work.

How to make the Mac do save at certain intervals?
Why would I want five saves the day?
I try to delete unnecessary files to free up space.
Trash on the Mac has become very slow, the removal process was take hours.
Then the process of removing all stops.
Why files are not removed through the trash?
What could be causing the removal process?

TimeMachine is designed to back up every hour. It saves only the files that have changed during the hour. After 24 hours TimeMachine culls the (up to) 24 backups to make a single backup for the day. After 30 days it takes the 7 oldest day backups and culls them into a single week backup.
You should never manually touch files in the TimeMachine backup. It doesn't like that. The best practice for TimeMachine is to devote an external drive to TimeMachine and nothing else. Because TM backups are incremental, it is recommended that your TM hard drive be 2-4 times larger than the amount of drive space your computer is using. In other words, if your 1TB hard drive is 1/4 full (250GB in use) you should have a TM drive between 500GB and 1TB depending on how much more data you expect to add to your drive and how long you wish to keep old back files.
Having said all this, you might prefer using some other program for backups. CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync are two programs you might want to look at.

  • I have a macbook air late 2010 and keep getting a warning that my hard drive is full and to delete things so I purchased a external hard drive (1TB) but I'm just not sure what the correct way to transfer and store files to the external drive is. First MAC

I purchased a macbook air about 5 months ago and lately i keep recieving a warning that the hard drive or disk is full and that I will need to move items to trash in order to free up space on it. I purchased a external hard drive 1 TB but I'm very new to mac and ios and unsure as to how I'm suppose to transfer my files (video, pics, music etc.) from my mac over to the external hard drive in the correct way so I won't end up deleting them permenately or screwing anything up with my mac as far as the applications and programs being able to run. Am I supposed to just copy to the external hard drive and then move to and empty the trash? That's pretty much all I could come up with, but then what if i need or want to access that file again at a later time. Also, I have an i Phone and i pad so with i cloud it automatically syncs all my purcheses and if i delete something from itunes on my mac it deletes from my ipad.
I'd appreciate any kind of input i think im just a little lost here. I have to say i love my Mac and wouldn't trade it for anything (except maybe a macbook pro w/more memory)... Is there something I'm missing???

To free up hard drive space the best bet is to move data files that you don't need access to all the time. Likely candidates are music, video, and photos. Things like word processing and spreadsheet files can also be moved but they tend not to be very large and so don't free up much space. The problem with moving the above mentioned files is that iTunes and iPhoto need to know where the files are stored.
Here's an article explaining how to move the iTunes folder. You can move the iPhoto library using the Finder but there is a slight complication. Start iPhoto, open the Preferences and click on the Advanced tab. The first option is "Copy items to the iPhoto Library". If this option is checked, copy the iPhoto library to your external folder (drag it from the Pictures folder to your external drive) and then delete it from your Picture folder. If this option is not checked, it is a bit more complicated and we'll need to talk a bit.

  • How do I delete files from an external hard drive?

I am running LR 3.6 on Windows 7 and keep my images on an external drive rather than my internal one. When I select the "delete from disk" option, it removes the file from the catalog but not from the external drive. I have to do this manually. What am I doing wrong?

It should be deleting from both the catalogue and disk.
Are you sure that you don't have two copies of the file on disk, and (of course) Lightroom only knows of one of them?
Try this:  before you delete a file, right-click on it and choose Show In Explorer. Then delete the file from disk using Lightroom. Does it disappear from the open Explorer window? (You might need to right click in the Explorer window and choose Refresh.
After your experiment, get back to us.
