Delete System Application in Keychain Access
When I go to my Keychain, I can see a bunch of old networks I used to connect to, but that I don't use anymore (old neighbour, old boyfriend, etc.). They appear under "System" and while selecting the "all items" category. I can select the old network, "right" click on it and press delete, but the following appears "Could not write to the file. It may have been opened with insufficient access privileges."
I don't understand, because I unlocked the padlock on the upper left corner... What can I do to get rid of those old networks?
Thanks.
Did you unlock the keychain before trying to delete the keys?

Trying to delete wifi certificate in Keychain Access; continually crashes
Every time I try to delete my wifi certificate in Keychain Access, it continually crashes. Tried it in safe mode, still crashes. I cannot get my Airport extreme 5th gen to pass along an IP address to my Mac even though mac is connected to AE (seen via Network Utility). Thought that deleting keychain password would help.
OSX 10.10.1
retina Macbook Pro 13Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful. -
Keychain Access crashes when opening
Hi,
I recently had a problem with 'Mail' which was solved by David Gimeno on the 'Mail & Address book' forum. However, it seems that it was caused by a different problem with my keychains. I cannot determine what the problem is, as I cannot run 'Keychain Access'. Whenever I try to start it, it crashes within a second.
I have tried reinstalling the recent 10.4.7 update (combo) several times, including first removing
/Library/Keychains/System.keychain
~/Library/Keychains/MicrosoftIntermediateCertificates
~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
and then performing the update. My system appears to be operating correctly, but I fear that this will lead to instabilities and I might lose data. I have attached the crash log below.
Any help/advice would be great!
Kieran

MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.7)Hi,
I recently had a problem with 'Mail' which was solved by David Gimeno on the 'Mail & Address book' forum.
Kieran

Unable to open keychain access app
Having gone through Finder-Applications-Utilities-Keychain Access app, the result is a Problem report for Keychain Access, namely :-
"Keychain Access cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure Keychain Access works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X."
My iMac (27 inch, Mid 2010)
OS X Yosemite Ver. 10.10.2
Processor 2.8GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 12 GB 1333MHz DDR3
HD 2TB - 678GB free
Keychain Access Ver. 4.1.1
Can anyone help me resolve this problem, please?Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try to launch Keychain Access. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
Help required on Keychain Access !!?
The Keychain Access window keeps 'popping up' to ask me to put in my pass word I can, iether put it in ( and it won't pop up for a while) or I can just click on cancel and it will let me carry on !! Any ideas ? I have tried Keychain First Aid and this says 'no problems"
Your thoughts and advice will be welcome, loons.Loons,
What is it that you want (you don't really say)?
I will assume that you want to get rid of the need to enter your password, or at least lengthen the time that your Keychain remains open. Either of these actions can be performed using /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.
Launch Keychain Access, then choose Edit>Change Settings for Keychain "xxxx". Use the dialogue that you will be given to either change the length of time that your Keychain remains open, or disable locking altogether.

Why does the Notes app want Keychain access?
Does anyone know why Notes wants keychain access? It started when I downgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. The dialong also won't accept 'no' for an answer. If I select "Deny" it just repeats the question and the only options are to close the program or allow access. Since it doesn't allow secure notes, why does it need the keychain, and why present a dialog with no choices?
Try going to Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access/Secure Notes and see if there is an entry there. If so, you'll need to decide if you want to keep it or not.

Keychain Access - does this mean anything to anyone
I have the access restricted box after putting in the password, and after following suggestions from various posts I did the Verify Permissions and Repair Permissions.
This is what came up on both:-
ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.app".
Anyone know what ACL means - does it help at all?Copy/paste this command into Terminal, leave a space and drag Keychain Acess.app in and post the output
ls -la
An ACL is an Access Control List. It may add certain modifications to the basic Unix permissions of a file. I'm seeing one on my Keychain, so I don't think we want to remove it on yours.
EDITED: disregard the first command I gave you, if you saw it.

Hi all.
I've just been given an Air. I used Migration Assistant to transfer everything (which didn't work very well: no Contacts transferred and the Air Contacts application can't even open manually transferred Contacts Archive .vcf).
Trying to transfer contacts led me to iCloud - I thought I could copy them from there. Then I discovered that I can't sign in to iCloud via System Preferences. I get two error messages. The most common one is 'you cannot sign in at this time'. I've tried every solution on the web: I reinstalled Yosemite. I reset Keychain Access. I deleted Accounts plist.
The other message I occasionally get is 'This is a valid Apple ID but not an iCloud account'. It is: I'm logged on fine on my MBP, iPhone and iPad.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance,
AidaSo - I have been having this same issue, and while it's not totally resolved for me, I have figured out what's causing it. I am running a machine with two hard drives and to keep my documents on a separate drive from the OS/Applications, I used the Advanced Option to specify the location of my home drive for my user account under "Users & Groups". I've found that if I reset this to the default path of /Macintosh HD/Users/{username}, that it works fine. However Apple has a bug in that this functionality breaks when you specify your own home directory. Hopefully, this will be addressed in an update.

Keychain Access is crashing my system
I'm having a problem, the root of which I believe is Keychain Access.app. Not exactly sure when it started happening. I'm on a Dual 2.5 G5 PowerMac, 4GB RAM, 250GB HD, OS 10.4.10.
Here's the progression of events:
If I update an app that has passwords stored in my keychain (any app, Apple or 3rd party), the next time I open that app I'm greeted with the following message:
Appname has been updated. Do you want to allow the new version to access the same keychain items (such as passwords) as the previous version?
This change is permanent and affects all keychain items used by Appname.
Don't Change/Change All
If I click Change All the system pauses for a few moments and I get a message saying:
Your startup disk is almost full.
You need to make more space available on your startup disk by deleting files.
? Do not warn me about this disk again.
And if I Get Info on my hard drive I can see that it has 138.37 GB available, which is correct.
The system continues to act wonky until I restart. For example, I can't empty the trash because I do not have enough permissions. Any applications that require Keychain Access.app for passwords can't access their passwords. I can't even unlock the system prefs after this happens, it just hangs when I click the lock icon. Upon opening Keychain Access.app after the events described above (but before restarting) all of my keychains are missing! They come back after I restart. Before I restart, if I try to Fast User Switch to a different account, the system turns the screen-cube, but it never brings up a user list; instead it sits at a blue screen until I do a hard shutdown.
This happens every single time an app wants to update my keychain, without fail. I've tried running Keychain First Aid, Disk First Aid, and fsck (in single user mode). I've repaired the permissions. I've installed system updates (10.4.10) since this started happening. I made a new user and opened an app that requires keychain to update, and I ran into the exact same problems.
How can I fix this without resorting to Archive and Install? (Please don't just tell me to install Leopard---I'm going to do this eventually, and hopefully it will fix my problem, but I'm quite busy for the next few weeks and I can't take time enough away from my projects to do this.)Yep, tried that too.
I don't have time to reinstall anything that might break in the Archive and Install process. Even if it's not likely that anything will break, I don't want to risk it. This computer is also currently being used to backup multiple TBs of data over the network. Guess I'll just A&I Leopard in a couple weeks. -
Keychain access application not working.
keychain not working, click on the generic app. icon and it simply pops up and closes. reloaded osx10.4.3, but no results. anyone have suggestions?
powerbook g4 Mac OS X (10.4.3)Next step is to create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem remains. If not, then it's a problem with the original account. If so, then the problem's system-wide.
If the original account, you have two options: 1) try to find the corrupted file, maybe the com.apple.keychainaccess.plist file in ~/Library/Preferences/. Move it to the desktop, log out and back in, relaunch Keychain Access. If that doesn't work, then check all the .plist files with something like Preferential Treatment. 2) reset your prefs in the new account and eventually delete the original.
If system-wide, then reinstalling the OS using the Archive & Install option, saving user and network settings, might be your only option, especially since reinstalling the combo update didn't fix the problem. -
Two System keychains in Keychain Access
Hi there
When I go into Keychain Access I see two 'system' keychains listed. I believe they are multiple references to the same keychain. Is this something I should worry about and might it affect system performance?
Many thanks
Paul Blake
Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.8)it's still just one system keychain. you just opened it twice. this is quite harmless. if it really bothers you quit keychain access and delete the file /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.security.plist. then start keychain access and there will be just one system keychain there.

Deleting certificates in Keychain Access???
I noticed in my Keychain Acess that I have a slew of certificates which (1) I'm not sure what their purpose really serves and (2) there's a ton of them with names I don't recognize and draws my suspicion.
What purpose do these certificates serve and what would happen if I deleted them?
And just to clarify: I'm not talking about my passwords, etc. in Keychain Access. I'm specifically referring to Certificates which I find by clicking on: System Roots and Certificates.
Thanks for any help.If you delete a certificate, the source that gave you the certificate will just offer another one when you authenticate. Certificates are just a way for encrypted connections to establish identity between a client and server. The server will digitally sign a certificate that contains a public key as well as some personal information that's used by the service you're connecting to. Certificates are provided by the service, and can have expiration dates and such.
Cookies are similar in ways, but they arent as versatile and secure. They're generally used to let your browser keep track of when you last visited a site, perhaps contain a password for the site, and other user settings for a site. Certificates are mainly used for authorizing access to a service. -
System keychain appears twice in Keychain Access
Taking a rare look at Keychain Access app and notced that the System keychain appears twice consecutively. Is this usual? I'm loath to try deleting anything as they're identical and afraid that trashing one will do them both. Any advice?
cheersHi Reverend,
I wouldn't worry about it, I have a couple of Macs like that that I attribute to using Migration Assistant, (not sure), but have no problems with them in any way, shape, form or manner! -
No keychain access or system profiler or mail - very alarmed
Today I repaired permissions and backed up my system to an external drive with silverkeeper 1.3. I also ran Macjanitor 1.2.1. I have been using OS 10.4.3 for about 3 weeks with no problem although just lately things seemed a little slow, which is why I was doing maintainance. Everything was working fine, includin Mail, after the maintenance. Shut down.
Returned home, started up, Mail icon bounces once, won't open. System Profiler opens but won't run. Keychain access bounces in the dock once, stops. Safari is fine, so is Address book. Disk Utility can open but only gives me the option to restore a disk. The disk utility log says "No icon found for DMdisk object" This is getting VERY SCARY!
Anyone have any ideas? I am pretty sure macjanitor was a dumb thing to do as it wasn't the latest version and maybe isn't tiger compatible.. Has it trashed something essential?
Thanks
PhoebeThis crash followed a backup to an external drive. Didn't read the part in the instructions that say "always create a fresh backup after installing a new system"
Had to reinstall then restore files from the backup. -
Should the passwords in 'System keychain' (in Keychain Access) normally be accessible to the owner/administrator or not?
If not, would it be possible to gain access via the Root Account?
I can access the passwords in 'Login keychain' (in Keychain Access). But when I try to access the passwords in 'System keychain' I'm asked for the Keychain Access password! I've never set such a password. I've only ever used one password - my owner/administrator password. But this isn't accepted when I try to access the passwords in 'System keychain'.
Please note, this question was previously posted in the OSX Tiger forum but no-one offered an answer
Thanks,
iHopeSeems this is a characteristic of the system keychain.
