How does one delete a text message?

Long-press the text to highlight it, then press the trash can to delete it.
Edited to add: it's been one of those days. My directions were for deleting a text thread/conversation, not an individual text.

Try this...
have a text convo with the person you want to delete. Go to the top contact in the text convo, hit edit contact, and delete that contact.
That resolution came from another thread on this issue, and this did solve to poster's issue.

Text msg showing up on main menu and can't delete it

All of a suddend a text msg popped up on the main menu under messages. I have since read the message and deleted it but it is still listed under on the main menu. I have deleted it numerious time but can't seem to get rid of it. Any suggestions?

Restart the device (with the phone turn on) taking out the battery for 30 seconds and reinstall it again, try to delete the SMS again and let me know

If you are asking how to restore deleted text messages, you have to restore your phone from a backup made while the messages were on your phone, if you have one. This may restore deleted contacts in the same way but there is no guarantee (contacts are stored in the backup only to maintain favorites and the recent call list).

How can I delete texts from a conversation in iOS8 without deleting the entire conversation?

If I tap and hold an indivivual text msg, I get the pop-up with "Copy | More" and I select "More". The only choice then is to "Delete All" or "Cancel". There is no trashcan visible to just delete the selected message. I have an iPhone 5 and and an iPhone 6. Both are at iOS 8.1.3 and perform the same way. Am I missing something? One or two iOS versions ago, I was able to select individual msgs and "Delete Selected" (or something like that)

sberman (& Emilyy1234), thanks for making me look more. The Trash Can icon and the Forward (arrow) icon were not visible at the bottom of the screen. What was there was the text message input window with the camera icon in the lower left and the Send button in the lower right. That screen bottom line was covering the Trash Can icon and the Forward icon.
The only way I can make it disappear is to select the input area and then when the keyboard slides up and I drag it dow out of the way, the Trash Can is right where it should be.
It seems like the action of 'tap and hold' an individual message and then selecting 'More' is failing to replace the bottom screen line (msg input line) with the Trash Can and Forward icon on the bottom screen line. It works that way on the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 6 (both at iOS 8.1.3). Is that the way it works for everyone or is it something about my phones?

How to send a text msg without attaching it to an existing conversation?

I have a text msg conversation with someone that I don't want to delete. I want to start a new conversaiton with them but when I start a new text it automatically attaches to the existing conversation. How do I start a second conversation? Thanks for you help!

Unfortunately, the default Messages app associates a message to a recipient, not to a conversation. So it will get jumbled with the rest.
On the same spirit, might want to do a full backup of the phone thru iTunes on a computer and storing locally, after the message(s) are in. If needed, can later extract the message contents from that backup, even if no longer on the phone and as long as you don't overwrite the backup file that contains them. Go to iTunes / Preferences / Devices, select the correct backup, do a Control-Click (or Right-Click) and select Archive from the dropdown menu. Rename the backup file appropriately so it won't get overwritten next time you back up the phone.

Step 2 in this stupidity - the phone keeps trying to send the deleted text via SMS and wont stop notifying me of this. Totally ruining the functionallity of my phone, and more so totally annoying. All I want to do is stop the constant re-trying of sending the deleted SMS.

Hi, many thanks for your help - Pressing and holding sleep/reset hasn't worked, the msg is still continually reporting it is failing to send. I can restore to a previous version however I'll lose my paid apps. Is there any way to work around this. I'm only concerned about one app - Epocam HD which I purchased last month. My last backup on PC is 4 March 13 - before I bought the paid app - Itunes advises me I'll have to re-pay to get my apps (app) back. Even though it advises that icloud backed up this morning at 1:30 am (which although it is before the text, I cannot manually select this restore).

Thank you for your responses! Unfortunately, I tried resetting my preferences but it did not change the outcome. I was able to get rid of the export problem when I deleted the tabs in the formatting (Thanks, Eugene)...is there a setting a can change that would make my computer export the tabs normally (when my coworker exports the same document she does not have a problem even with the tabs...)

A few days ago I began to be unable to send text msgs. Using iPhone 3G, it appears that the 'send' button is dithered 'greyed' out. I tap it but nothing happens. I can email, and obviously type text online (as here) but cannot 'send' text. I deleted MSG history, cleared cache, cleared recent calls, cleared email history to no avail. I can receive text just dandy but cannot send. Can anyone shed some light here or do I go see the 'geniuses' at the store and get a new phone. ( it seems every time I have a phone problem like this, they can't fix it they just give me another phone) Would really like to not have to go to the store. Thanks in advance for anyones help!

I would try a few basic things before scheduling an appointment with the Genius Bar.
1) Sync your iPhone with your computer. I have noticed that sometimes my phone will have a hiccup and when I sync it, whatever was wrong automatically rights itself.
2) Reset your iPhone holding down the "home" button and the Sleep/Power button on the top right side of the phone at the same time. It takes about 5-15 seconds and you want to make sure you hold down both buttons until you see the apple logo, ignore the slider.
3) Plug your iPhone into the computer and perform a phone restore. There are 2 options for this:
a- If you know when this problem started with your SMS messaging you can restore from a backup that was done on a previous sync. Chose a date prior to this issue starting and restore your phone to how it was on that date.
b- If you don't know when this issue began or restoring it to an earlier date does not fix the problem you can restore it to how it was when it came out of the box.
I hope that one of these things is able to solve your problem with SMS messaging. If none of these fixes the problem you should schedule an appointment with the Genius Bar and get this resolved with them. If you visit the Genius Bar make sure to sync your iPhone just prior to your appointment so if they need to replace the iPhone you don't lose any calendar entries, recently added contacts, pictures, etc.

I compose an iMessage with the destination as my email address and I attach 2 photos I want on my PC. I send them several times from my iPhone 5C but they never arrive. I look at my ipad later and realize that it's iMessage app is getting ( and swallowing) these emails. I then turn the ipad off. Still can't get the photos through because iphone is now getting them on it's iMessage. I turn off the iMessage feature and try to send photos from text msging. Phone tells me it can't send photos unless iMessage it turned on. What happened to regular MMS text messaging? I go and try to send photos as an email attachment and see that there is no option to attach from the stupid email program. I look up online to learn about the brave new world of apple attachments and send them.

Did not work. I've selected iMessage to ON and left it. After a few hours I recieved a message "activation unsuccessful. Turn on iMessage to try again". This has been going on for the past 3 days.

How can I merge my contacts on iphone but keep the text msgs

I use my phone a lot for work and a lot of my correspondance is through text msgs. My best friend and I share the apple account and we have the same contacts so when I add it to the account my phone she does the same and we come up with duplicate contacts. We would like to be able to merge them and then create seperate apple id accounts so it doesnt happen again but we need to keep the text msgs.

BTW...we cant update our ios either because of lack of room on our phone.

I suppose you have/had them on your iPhone, but do not have your iPhone with you now.
Did you ever sync the iPhone with iTunes, did you ever backed up the iPhone to iCloud?

Deleting Text from a Table

I want to know the shortcut for deleting text from a table on a macbook pro with the latest version of Microsoft Word. I want to keep the table and it's formatting but I want the current information deleted and don't want to have to do this cell by cell. I highlight all the text I want deleted and then.........???????
