Delete Timeframe for Trashed Emails

How can I extend the auto-delete time for emails in the TRash; they're deleting too fast--within hours?

They should stay at least 30 days and often stay longer in the webmail interface. If they disappear that fast something is not right. Are you forwarding your email to another device or email program, and specifying that they be deleted from webmail?

  • Mac Mail deleting trash emails

My preferences are saved to NEVER delete sent/ junk/ trash emails. Although I have a historic list of sent items, my emails in trash only display the last 7 days worth.
Any ideas why this might be? I like to use the trash folder as my place to store all historic emails (as I do at work), but I have no idea what's going on.
Time machine isn't an option as I don't back it up that often
    Thanks all

Change the settings on either your iPhone or iPad. Default for them is 7 days.
You should not save emails in your trash. Create local folders, imap folders, or archive messages you don't want in your inbox.

  • PLEASE help!! I use Outlook for my email and the Mail App Icon in my dock was also storing all my emails. So, I tried to delete ONLY the emails in the Mail App but somehow (under Preferences maybe?) I also deleted all my emails in my Outlook inbox.

PLEASE help!! I use Outlook for my email and the Mail App Icon that is in my dock, that I know nothing about, was also storing all my emails. So, I tried to delete ONLY the emails in the Mail App but somehow (under Preferences maybe?) I also deleted ALL my OUTLOOK emails in my inbox.  Can someone please please tell me if there is a way to get my Outlook inbox emails back OR EVEN the emails that were in my Mail app - because even tho I never use the Mail app, at least the emails would be there.
When I was trying to delete the emails in my inbox for the Mail app - I followed THESE directions.  It did in fact clear my inbox for the Mail app.  But then I went to log on to my Outlook account and EVERY SINGLE EMAIL was gone.  And not in the Deleted box.  Just gone.  Here are the directions I followed that screwed everything up.  Please help.
Top menu bar, Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors.
Uncheck "Store deleted messages on the server".
At the drop list for "Permanently erase deleted messages when", choose "Quitting Mail".
    Next...
Top menu bar, Mail > Preferences > General.
At "When searching all mailboxes, include results from", uncheck "Trash".
    Select All = command A

    i found out my prob!
    here is what you do.
go to the "system preferences" on your dock.
    click "software updates".
    click "installed software"
if it shows something about a recent update about "EFI UPDATE, FIRMWARE, THUNDERBOLT" or anything like that, exit out of it.
    go to mail.
    click "mail" at the top.
    click "preferences...".
find the account you are having trouble with, once you do, make sure its highlighted, then click the "-" at the bottom of the window (this will only effect that mail account, it will not effect your ical weather or not its synced thought that email account)
hit the "+" (right next to the "-") and add your accout back!
its something with that update that effected mail, i hope this works out for you, if not reply back

  • Mail app not automatically deleting trash emails

    iTunes 11.1.2.32 Windows 7 32 Bit
    iPhone 4S (and iPhone 4)
    iOS 7.0.3
I have my own domain name for my email.
I can access via POP3 SSL and IMAP SSL
My first iPhone was a 4 which i used July 2010 to July 2012. I July 2012 i upgraded to my current 4S.
I use Windows Mail on my PC to access my email via POP3 SSL as i have no need to keep messages on a server any longer than i need to.
I use the Mail app on my iPhone to access the messages via IMAP SSL. Up until iOS 7 i would check my emails using the iPhone and delete any messages to the Trash folder On My iPhone (not on the server). I would have it set to delete the deleted messages After One Day so i had a 24 hour safety buffer.
This way i could use the iPhone as a quick check on my email and also use it as a Spam filter. If i needed to reply to an email from my iPhone I would and cc myself in if i needed a copy. One or twice a week i would fire up the PC and download the messages in the Inbox to the PC in Windows Mail.
This arrangement worked flawlessly for 3 years until i updated to iOS 7. Now the deleted messages in my Trash folder stay there until i manually remove them. I've tried:
-deleting and resetting up the account again in the iPhone
-changing the setting to One Month, saving the change and then setting it back to One Day and saving the setting.
-checked with my domain/email provider that i'm using the correct settings.
-changed IMAP Path Prefix from \ to INBOX, which works the first time but then fails to work again (i.e. each time i change it to \ and then back to INBOX it clears everything over a day old at that point but then doesn't do it again)
My wife has my old iPhone 4 without a SIM and uses it as an email checker for her account as well as for surfing the net and Facebook etc. She has the same setup as me (but seperate email account on my Domain) it all worked fine on that too until the update to iOS 7.
Is there a setting that might have gone out of line here or something i've missed?

There are actually two settings that could have a bearing on this:
Preferences > General > Check for New Mail
Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Include when automatically checking for new mail
Also, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Do you have any Mail plug-ins or any system utilities that could interfere with Mail? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/StartupItems/
    /Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
Also, open System Preferences, and go to Accounts > Login Items. What do you see there?
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

  • My,trashed,mail,is,only,showing,October,trashed,emails,and,a,small,list,of,rando m,emails,before,October.,,My,setting,are,on,never,delete,the,trashed,emails.

My trashed emails are only showing for the month of October.  My settings are to never delete trashed emails, so I should have a significant number of emails in there.  I do see a few random emails before October.  How do I get them all to show, I need to search them for a particular email.  This is a .mac email account

If secureserver.net is IMAP then all emails will by definition come back unless you dragged emails into folders residing only "On My Mac" in Apple Mail on your previous machine.  If secureserver.net is POP and your mail is not coming back, the only thing that could be from is the messages being deleted from the server, esp. if they aren't showing up in web mail. It's even possible that the thieves deleted all of your messages. Check you webmail's trash bin.
Do you have a backup? Can you contact your email provider about possible data recovery? Sorry, this sounds terrible!

  • ICloud mail: iPhone creates Deleted Messages folder for Trash mail?

I had a problem with one iCloud email account which I've spent half a day truing to sort so though I'd post what happened here in case anyone knows how it happened or in case anyone has the same problem.  The problem centres around the Trash folder.
On all the other accounts (all iCloud email) the folders are replicated and all work.  So Sent, Archive, Drafts and Trash are there.  Deleting a mail on the iPhone, on the Mac or the Cloud puts the mail in the Trash (with the bin icon) and it's visible on all three devices in the same location (albeit the phone uses the Deleted Messages name for trash which is a bit dumb IMO considering it's called Trash everywhere else!!).
One account though seems to be in a mess.  In the Cloud the folder structure is correct and all with the icons.  The first problem is when adding the account to the phone.
First up, when selecting the various behaviours you can see the Deleted Messages icon with the bin icon to select for deleted messages (I do think this is confusing though - why not use the same folder name as appears in IMAP mail - Trash???)  BUT there is also a folder called Trash that the phone can see in IMAP but that doesn't exist in the iCloud folder structure.  Why this folder is even visible I don't know because on iCloud mail there are no user created folders at all, just the default icons and folder names.
When I send a message to the address on the iPhone and delete it from there the iPhone creates a Deleted Messages folder that is visible on iCloud mail.  When I select the bin/trash icon on mail on the phone the mail is in there.  The bin / Trash folder on iCloud remains empty and the Deleted Messages folder has the deleted mail.
So the first issue seems to be that the phone is seeing a folder that isn't there or that somehow the correctly named Trash folder with the icon has become named Trash when the phone sees it, and has a generic folder icon.  Either way, I can't delete this Trash folder.
How it seems to have got fixed was that after trying all manner of things I went to Preferences on iCloud.  I told iCloud to store messages in Deleted Messages.  I then deleted the Deleted Messages folder then suddenly this Trash folder the phone had been seeing became visible.  I then deleted that too and on checking back the Preferences had defaulted back to Trash, the only available option now.
Having gone back to the iPhone the bin icon is still next to the Deleted Messages folder but that Trash folder had gone.  There were no other user defined folders either
I then tested sending messages to the account and deleting them from the phone, Mac and Cloud and they all went to the right place (Trash) and were all visible.
I'd had a problem ages ago where random mailboxes were appearing under the separate email names BELOW where the default boxes are listed and below any On My Mac folders.  I'm wondering whether at some stage, with an old Google hangover, whether I'd selected 'Use this Mailbox for' when these random boxes appeared which might have renamed or messed with the routing of boxes in the Cloud.

That's the way it works. Push notifications are only triggered when you get "new" mail. Other actions, like deleting, reading, moving to a folder do not trigger a Push notification. Those actions only change things when you open the mail app.

Is there a way I can delete my primary @me email address so that I can receive emails only via my "reserved" @icloud address. eg. delete "msjones@me" and receive emails via "msjones@icloud" only. The reason being, I receive a fair bit of spam to my @me address. Going forward I plan on using an alias for certain websites to minimise this problem.

You can't delete the address, but you can set up a Rule to move messages to that address to the Trash or another folder. Go to http://icloud.com and go to the Mail page, click the cogwheel icon at top right and choose 'Rules'.
It's a bad idea to post your email address - it's an invitation to spam - even though in fact you haven't posted them in full; I've asked the hosts to remove them.

  • Checking for new email deletes all previous messages from iphone 3g

After receiving any email, the device is removing all email from all local folders. The remove setting is set to 'never', 'ask before deleting' is set to 'on' and it is set to show 75 messages. There is nothing in the trash, sent, or main inbox.
I can see a test email for about 5 minutes. if I resynch or turn the device off, and and then check for new email, the old email is removed. No trace of it anywhere.
It didn't do this originally. It just started in the last few days.
    Thanks.

I suggest deleting and recreating the account.

If you are using Apple's Mail app 6.5 is the latest version irrespective of what a previous poster says. It does sound though that you are using a gmail account online via a web browser. Please confirm and fill in missing information.

  • My IPhone 4's mailing feature does not display the toolbar at the bottom for deleting, moving, or writing emails. What is wrong with it?

My work recently decided to buy every full time employee an IPhone 4 to be used for work purposes. (I do suspect these are refurbished, but I don't think that matters) I have had no trouble with it, except for on occasion the mailing feature does not display the toolbar at the bottom for deleting, moving, or writing emails. You know what I'm talking about...that bar at the bottom of the mailbox when you open an email that you use to delete, respond, forward, move, etc. It just goes away for no reason, and then reappears for a day or two, and goes away again. It is quite annoying since I can't respond to any of my emails without getting on my work computer. If you have any suggestions, please help!

    Hi there,
You may need to force close the Mail application when this happens. The next time this happens, use the steps in the article below to coles out of the mail application.

How can I empty my trash email. There is no delete or delete all option after the emails are highlighted from the edit option. This is on an i phone 4 running on ios 7.1.2

If you suspect they are being marked as junk and deleted, turn off the auto-delete. Being that Office is a Microsoft product, you should ask them how to do that: http://www.microsoft.com/mac.

  • Drafts in my trash for every email message I create?

Why do I have dozens of save drafts in my trash for every email message I create?
If is ridiculous! If I take ten minutes working on an email I have more than a dozens drafts in trash showing me the stages of the message being composed. My trash is cluttered with partial drafts. This is new behavior that started 11/11/13.

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box markedAllow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use  another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • The email EDIT button used for marking emails to delete, move or mark just stopped working today.  When I hit EDIT nothing happens.  How do I fix it?

I need help fixiting the iPad2 email EDIT button used for tagging emails to delete, move, or mark.  Today, it just stopped working and is unresponsive.  The DELETE, MOVE, & MARK icons do not appear and I cannot tag emails.
How do I fix the problem?

Restart the device (hold power + home until the Apple logo appears) or just turn it off (hold the power button until the red swip bar appears and swipe) and then back on.
If that doesn't fix it, you can try a restore from backup or setting it up as new.
