Deleted emails greyed out in Inbox

Hi,
I have absolutely no idea how it happened but i have suddenly got upwards of 1000 deleted emails showing in my Inbox, greyed-out. I cant move them or do anything else with them, much less remove them.
I tried Cmd-Z when it happened, nothing happened, then I listed them by sender (Facebook) and tried to move them to Trash  with no luck either.
Anyone got a suggestion?
Helen.

One more thing to try, but make sure you have your Mail folder backed up. You already did, so no need to do it again. But also make a backup copy of the Mail Downloads folder as well. It's nearby.
Navigate to your Home Folder Library, this time to Preferences, and move the file com.apple.mail.plist to the Trash. Important, don't empty the Trash. If this doesn't work you can use File>Put Back to restore everything the way it was.
Doing this will bring you to the initial Mail setup and you will have to redo all your accounts, rules, mailboxes, whatever. Before doing this, it's probably a good idea to make screenshots of everything you will need again (Cmd-Shift-4) It's a PITA, but it may fix the problem. All your mail messages should be intact, but if there's a problem along the way, you just use Put Back for that .plist file. And, you have the Mail and Mail Downloads folders backed up, which you would move/drag back to their original locations.

Tom at the Genius Bar told me that Option Delete would work. It does not.
I had to upgrade to iTunes 11.1.(I26) because it is required with OS7 on my iPod Touch (5th Gen). I have tried shutting down iTunes, then shutting down the entire system. This is the first in many visits that the Genius Bar gave me a solution that did not work.
This is a big awkward computer locked to my desk. I would rather not unlock it and then carry it through a shopping center to the Genius Bar if i can avoid oit.
When I installed iTunes 11.1, I discovered that Ihad to resubscribe to virtually all of the podcasts that I had previously been subscribed to. That was a surprise.

    Hello Achates:
I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.

  • Why can't i delete songs from older i-pod touch, delete feature greyed out and right click or holding control and clicking do not offer delete option

Why can't i delete songs from older i-pod touch, delete feature greyed out and right click or holding control and clicking do not offer delete option in I-tunes. I've tried using both a Mac Book and PC with newer and older versions of I-tunes.

It sounds like you are try to delete the songs by connecting the iPod to other than the computer from which the songs were synced. You can only delete songs synced to an an older iPod (pre iOS 5) by connecting the iPod to its syncing computer and unsync them.

  • Deleted Emails Come back into Inbox

I have a iPhone 3GS with POP3 email account. When i delete emails from the iPhone inbox, occassionally I'll receive the same emails as "new" emails into my inbox again...after they've been deleted. Sometimes i delete by sliding the message to show the delete button, sometimes i use the edit to delete multiple emails and sometimes i delete from within the message. i have the settings set to delete from server when deleted from inbox. any thoughts?

I have the same problem on MacBook Pro using os 10.5.8 with Mail 3.6.
I discovered that if I look at emails that have been sent to trash select them and press delete they all come back. When I do the proper erase deleted messages then they don't.
This might be useful on your iphone.
I now have emails coming back to me weeks, or months after I have deleted them, particularly ones with photos attached that I have sent through Kodak EasyShare, and copied to myself!! does anyone know what I can do about this? apart from being a waste of time, I might receive 100 photos in one day which slows everything down and effects my data usage.

  • Deleted emails re-appearing in inbox (thousands at a time)

I haven't found an answer to this in previous threads, but if I've missed it, please do point me in the right direction.
I'm using Mail 1.3.11 on my iBook G4 (OSX 10.3.9). My account is linked to a POP Yahoo mail account and a couple of others.
I'm having a problem that re-occurs every so often. After trying to be good and clearing out my inbox, Mail will (without prompting or anything) start 'downloading' all the emails again--though i don't think it is really downloading them from the Yahoo account. Hundreds, if not thousands, of emails re-appear in my inbox. I think it is dredging them up from some file on my computer; it reads "indexing 1 of 4577" etc. and the process also takes a while and makes the computer slow.
this has happened about 4 times in the last few months and it's quite disheartening! I've made a backup of my mail folder already after reading a few posts on similar-sounding problems.
any guidance would be very much appreciated!!
    BA

Yes, thank you for your reply. I went through my Inbox on my Mac mail application (using the viewer window), and then selected all the emails i didn't want anymore, then clicked the delete key. I'd select a few at a time, then delete, etc.
At one point I worried that leaving these messages in my inbox on my Yahoo account would be the root of the problem; however, I did at one point move all of those messages to a separate folder so they are no longer in my Yahoo inbox, and the problem has occurred since I took this measure.
Let me know if I am not being specific enough--happy to elaborate.

  • 2012 R2 RBA: Remove / Delete buttons greyed out Administrative users account (sec role/scope) clean up

I am seeing something odd with one of my RBA settings.  Keep in mind I am seeing this as a 'Full Administrator'.
I created a new test Security scope, Security Role, created a test Active Directory group and then entered that AD group as a new account name under Security>Administrative users.  I added the new Security Role under the Security Roles tab of the
Account name (Administrative users) properties and also added the security scope that I created under the Security Scopes tab.  I was able to see all the settings I had created/exported in the RBA viewer and everything with the role worked as desired.
I am now looking to clean that up but I don't seem to be able to.  I am starting under Administrative Users>Account name and trying to unlink the Security Roles and Security Scopes that listed in those tabs.  However, remove and deletes on this
stuff are all greyed out.  If I add another role to the Security Role tab I can then remove that, but I cannot remove this 1 particular one.  The result is that I cannot remove the custom Security Scope, Security Role and ultimately the Administrative
    user.
Does anyone have any idea why I can't remove the security roles and scopes from the Account Name?

I'm able to "delete" one admin user or group (account name) from Administrative users node (\Administration\Overview\Security\Accounts). I tried with custom security role/scope etc....even the same user was part of \Administration\Overview\Security\Accounts.
It seems something wrong with your FULL admin account ? Do you've any other FULL Admin account? If so, can you try with that account?

  • How to delete a greyed out user account?

I'm trying to delete several user accounts, but some (both standard and admin) are greyed out even after i unlock the window in preferences/accounts. I can't find any info on why this might be, or how to delete these user accounts. Anybody have any ideas?
    Thanks.

Well, I think that was the answer, since when i rebooted, then I had free access to all the accounts. Thanks for your quick response.

  • Iphone 5 - all deleted emails have reappeared in inbox.  Why?

Travelling around the USA and have been deleting redundant emails from my phone and ipad.  Last night, nearly 400 deleted emails have reappeared in my iphone inbox.   Not in my ipad, just my iPhone 5.
Why and is this likely to keep occurring?
Wonder what I can do to prevent this?
    Thanks

my wife just had this same problem develop with her iPad 2 (not with her iPhone  or our iMac, all using the same email client, Comcast/Xfinity's webmail (which I dislike for lots of other reasons as well). My wife and I share the same address and the problem isn't happening on my iPhone5.
Re-booting the iPad hasn't helped and I haven't tried a reset, but that didn't work for you. Have you had any success with fixing the problem? It's very frustrating. I've posted the same question on an Xfinity forum, but have no responses yet.

  • Deleted Emails Keep Repopulating my Inbox

I have an iPad, iPhone and Mac and all have been upgraded to IOS 5.0 and all have iCloud turned on for mail (and most categories for what its worth).  The problem that I'm having is my emails, after deleting them and sorting them into different follow-up folders I have, keeps showing back up in my inbox.  I can go through and clean up my inbox by sorting into the different folders I have or just delete emails.  As soon as I select a different folder and go back to the inbox, everything I just cleaned up is right back in the inbox.  I have tried changing a few things but nothing has worked.  It really is quite annoying.
Is anyone else having this issue and how did you fix it?

I think it must be on the server end, not deleting it, & even whackier on the other end if 3 year old ones are coming back, I'd login using WebMail in a Browser & trash the deleted ones.
To delete an email without opening it, try right clicking on it & choose Delete.

  • Read mail greyed out, also Inbox, Trash, Sent, etc

I have two Macs, both use Mail Version 2.1 (752/752.2). On one of them, read messages are greyed out, as are the boxes down the left hand side of the page. Have checked the Preferences settings and can't see anything there. Any idea how to get of this please?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Deleted Emails Re-appear in Inbox

    Hello All
I used migration assistant to transfer all of my files to a new iMac with specs:
    OSX version 10.5.6, 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, Mail verison 3.5
Mail messages did not transfer. Running mail would not launch the message viewer. I had to choose "window" and then "message viewer." When it opened, it had transferred over the mailboxes but no mail. It would not receive new mail, or close without a force quit.
I did the steps to manually transfer over the emails. I copied the mail folder from the library in the home folder from the old to the new iMac. And I copied over the plist. This did not solve the problem.
I decided to delete the plist and re-enter the account information. This fixed the problem. All the filed emails were in the right folders and I could send and receive emails. The PROBLEM now is the emails that were in already in the inbox now can't be deleted. There is two of each email and the second one is blank. When trying to delete it, it would turn grey, and not be deleted out of the inbox. But then if I hit "command" + "L" it would disappear from the inbox, but the next time I left the inbox and came back it would be there. After deleting them them they did not show up in trash. Deleting them and then choosing "erase deleted messages in all accounts" does not work.
Thanks in advance for all the replies, I look forward to reading your responses.
    - Rick

    Hi Rick,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try re-building the "Envelope Index" file which is located in <home>/Library/Mail. Close Mail, move the "Envelope Index" file to the Desktop and then re-start Mail. Mail will go through all messages and create a new index file. Hopefully that will resolve the problem you have. You can safely trash the old "Envelope Index" file on your desktop.
    Post back with the results.

  • Deleted emails in Outlook Express inbox

Deleted items in inbox of Outlook Express was emptied 'automatically' (without a command), probably my inbox was filled to much.
2800 e-mails appeared in the dust bin as a batch.
I transferred (relocated) them to: "Local setting/Application data/Identities", but could not be opened any email.
    Any suggestions friends,

If you carefully follow these instructions, you may be able to recover them.
    1. First CLOSE Outlook Express.
    2. Hopefully you haven’t emptied your recycle bin yet. DON’T EMPTY IT.
    3. Click to open your Recycle Bin and do check it. Do you see any files that end in .bak, like drafts.bak, sent.bak, and
especially inbox.bak. If you do, it’s recoverable. But DON’T right-click and choose restore YET. (If you don’t see the files there, they may be in another folder, which you’ll get to later. At any case, they’ll have the .bak extension.)
    4. If you’re not already viewing details, choose VIEW from the top menu, and click on DETAILS. This is so you can see the
    original file location.
    5. The original file location could look something like this:  - C:\Documents and Settings\Default\Local
Settings\Application Data\Identities\some string\inbox.bak  - (Default could be some other name, some string is the string that you were given, which is different for different users.)
    6. You’re going to have to find that original folder, but you might have to reveal hidden files and folders to do so. Local
Settings are usually hidden.  - Click START, Choose CONTROL PANEL, and Click FOLDER OPTIONS (for Windows 7, you’ll have to click on APPEARANCE AND PERSONALIZATION link first before you can click on FOLDER OPTIONS.) Then click
VIEW and look in the ADVANCED SETTINGS Window for SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS. Click that radio button if it isn’t already chosen, then click the OK button.
    7. Now you’re ready. Find that folder, and look for an inbox.dbx. That is your current INBOX.
    8. Right-click inbox.dbx and rename it inbox2.dbx, just in case
    9. Now you can go back to your Recycle Bin, right click inbox.bak, and choose RESTORE.
    10. That file inbox.bak should now be in the folder you just found.
    11. Right click inbox.bak and rename it inbox.dbx
    12. Now open Outlook Express and your inbox messages should be restored.
OR if that doesn’t work ..
From the Outlook Express Top Menu, click File > Import > Messages >
Choose the email program you use  If it was Outlook Express 6, then choose >Import Mail
    from an OE6
    Store Directory
    > Click OK, and browse for that folder you just found
    > Click and choose inbox.dbx or whichever file you want to restore, those messages should be restored.
In case both methods don't work, then use OE-Mail Recovery http://www.oemailrecovery.com/outlook-express-recovery.html
