Deleted files from USB Disk attached to Airport Extreme

I deleted files from a USB disk attached to my airport extreme.  I then needed to recover them  but they are not in the trash can...how can I find and restore these files?  I have not emptied the trash.  I am just looking in the trash in my bar at the bottom bar.  I got the message that asked if I wanted to send them to the trash and I said yes...help, I need the files!
Thanks,
Josh

Unfortunately, as the message clearly states.....the file(s) will be deleted immediately....not moved to the trash.
If you want to experiment, a utility like Disk Warrior might be able to salvage some of the data on the disk....IF....you have not made any changes on the disk since you deleted the files.

But, it will be much quicker to simply restore a copy of the file(s) from your backups.

  • Cannot Delete Folders from USB drive connected to Airport Extreme

When I try to delete files from the usb drive connected to my airport I get "cannot remove folder, the directory is not empty.
This only happens for some of the folders that are empty. No problem deleting any files whether they were created before or after I setup the airport. The folders that won't delete were created after I hooked up the drive to the airport however, I can make new folders and delete them no problem now. The ones that don't delete say "read only" in the properties. when I uncheck read only it reverts back to read only automatically.
Any ideas what might be causing this?

Tried what you suggested last night - no change. What is odd, though, is that I can create a new folder on the external USB HDD (through the Hub) and copy a file into it. While I can then close Finder, re-open and see the Folder and file I copied, I still can't see all the data that is currently stored on the drive...Is this a delete and re-copy scenario?
    Thanks!

  • Can't Delete Files on USB Drive Connected to Airport Extreme

I'm trying to delete some files on a USB drive connected to my Airport Extreme, but I keep getting a error message that I don't have sufficient privileges to do so. I've tried super deletion applications like FileXaminer, without any success. What other methods are there?

    Thanks for the info.
Were you using the drive for Time Machine backups, by chance? Time Machine backups are stored in a different format when the disk is connected directly to a computer. So, you won't be able to continue to use the old backups when the drive location is changed.
You might want to check the drive by connecting directly to your Mac and running Disk Utility to "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" if indicated.
Even if the drive has it's own power supply, a powered USB hub is usually needed on the AirPort Extreme because the power at the USB port is quite limited.

  • Viewing files on a hard disk attached to airport extreme

I recently had issues with seeing a hard disk attached to airport extreme. The problem i had was that the hard disk had to be formatted in FAT-32 format which I did and fixed that problem. Now the data on that drive can not be accessed or modified from my PC ( windows 7) over the wireless network. When i look in my windows explorer the hard disk comes up on the network as airport drive Z and it has crosses in front of the files on the drive and a message that i do not have permission to access thes files. Any ideas would be appreciated in how to fix this. Thanks. darryl

Is there no way that time machine can delete the oldest back up when it becomes full?
Time Machine will automatically start to delete the oldest backups first to make room for new backups when the drive is full. It has worked this way since its introduction about 4 years ago.
The one thing that can throw this off is if the drive is near full, and you suddenly ask Time Machine to make a very large backup. Then, Time Machine can have problems, and you have to manually delete some older backups.
I thought about time capsule, but someone told me that it runs very hot and has no off switch.
Well, the Time Capsule is an AirPort Exreme in a larger case with a built in hard drive. My 4th Generation Time Capsule and 3rd Generation AirPort Extreme both run about the same, heat wise in my experience. If anything...the AirPort Extreme runs a bit warmer than the Time Capsule....if my hand is any kind of accurate indicator.  And, as you know, the Airport Extreme does not have an "Off" switch either.
I spoke to a lady in the Apple store today about a bigger drive and asked her what will happen when it gets full. She suggested that then I get another one. Sounds pretty crazy to me!
Sounds like a salesperson....hoping that you will buy more stuff.

  • How to recovery the deleted files from hard disk like images, media files

How to recovery the deleted files from hard disk like images, media files by using c#.net

It's important to define deleted and recovery. You can recover file from the recycle bin using the Win API. Here's an
example in C/C++. You need to
    pinvoke SHFileOperation.

  • Delete files from startup disk?

Under system preferences I see the StartUp Disk, but where do I delete files from that in order to clear up some space?
I have MacBook Air OS 10.6.8. Is it just under my User? everything like applications and documents, etc?

Open Finder and look on the sidebar for the House Icon:
Click on it and you should see a list similar to this:
You should be able to delete any items in those folders to create the required space.
You may also delete any third party applications from your Applications folder.
    Ciao.

  • Setting up USB disks connected to Airport Extreme

I took two different USB drives, formatted one drive with two partitions of Mac OS Extended (journaled) and the other drive formatted NTFS. After attaching the drives to the AE, I established how I wanted to share the devices and set up accounts to access the devices. My intention was to use these drives to backup my devices but have since learned that Time Machine does not support this (stupid and disappointing).
When I log in from my Mac, I see the one drive with two partitions, but I also see a drive with my account name. Performing a "Get Info" on the drives now show their format as AppleShare. What feature did I invoke that automatically established a "third" drive? Where is it established on the physically formatted Mac drive? Does the format of Appleshare just indicate how the partition is accessed?
The other account, established for a Windows machine, does not see the NTFS drive, but when logging in to the AE also has a drive mapped with the name of the account. I also cannot consistently connect to this drive as the airport utility does not display the drive in the system tray. The airport utility doesn't see the AE, yet this Windows device can print just fine to the printers attached to the AE.
I'm dazed and confused. Can anyone explain what is going on? Thanks.

The USB port on the AirPort Extreme will support drive formats of Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and FAT32. NTFS is not supported, so that might explain some of your difficulties.
What feature did I invoke that automatically established a "third" drive? Where is it established on the physically formatted Mac drive? Does the format of Appleshare just indicate how the partition is accessed?
Not sure about this. When I format a drive as Mac OS or FAT 32, I see a single drive when accessed from the Finder.

  • Slow access to disk attached to Airport Extreme 802.11n

I have a fairly trouble free internet connection and disk connection.
However, when I access folders on the disk attached to Airport, "beach ball" appears. The file (1mb) would eventually open but not after 30 seconds.
I have attached the air disk to mac and use disk utility to scan for errors. No errors.
I have good 120 transmit rate with low noise - speedy connection to internet.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks.

I am having the same problem too. And a lot of people here too.
Since upgrading to 10.5.3, it's broken the AFP (Apple File Sharing Protocol).
TM is slow. File Coping is slow. Even mounting AirDisk is slow.
If you can display the connection time, you can see the time stops when AEBS is unresponsive. If you use Active Monitor to display the network stats, you can see the activity start and stop every few seconds. And when AEBS is unresponsive, it brings down the internet also.
There is no solution, and it's very frustrating.

  • How do I restrict access to USB Disk connected to Airport Extreme

I have attached a USB HDD to my Airport Extreme Base Station. The drive is divided into 4 partitions, which I did with the HDD connected directly to a MBP before plugging into the AEBS. All the Macs on the network seem to be able to read and write into all 4 partitions. Is there anyway to restrict which Macs can access with partition? Or, if I went to a single partition, is there a way to restrict access on a folder by folder basis?
I've tried searching, but the best answer I've found so far is that the AEBS will only support a single partition/volume.... which doesn't appear to be true anymore.
    Thanks in advance

You can put a filter on your wifi or use something like the K9 browser.

Here is some info I just found on the Western Digital Support site:
The Western Digital units mentioned above use a proprietary file system and cannot be reformatted as FAT32, NTFS, or a Mac File System.
The file system on the WD My Cloud EX2, WD My Cloud EX4, WD My Cloud, WD My Book Live, WD My Book Live Duo, WD ShareSpace, WD ShareSpace, WD TV Live Hub, My Net N900 Central, WD My Book World Edition, WD NetCenter hard drives support access from Windows, Mac and most Linux based computer systems through a SAMBA network sharing connection.
I thought I would mention that I can access the NAS and write, read and execute from the drive.

  • Delete file from hard disk etc.?

Can iTunes do the following, and how?
    1. When I ask a file to be deleted from the Library, is there some way of asking for the file to be deleted from the hard disk itself?
    2. If the location of the file has changed, can iTunes update its library and delete the unfound files from its list?

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

  • Cannot delete files from hard disk (after deleting from playlists)!

all of a sudden itunes stopped allowing me to automatically delete (with the warning) a downloaded podcast so I would have to go to the hard disk manually to delte the posdcast.
How do I get the system back to what it was where I delete a podcast and then get the warning and say ok to delete from hard disk?
    TIA!

    Hi Chris:
    2 part response:
I founf the problem--somehow my itunes folder was moved to a different part of my hard drive--once I moved it back I can delete.
I can delete as follows: when I right click and click on delete, I first delete the file from itunes library--then I get prompted if I want to delete from my hard disk by sending file to recycle bin--There is also a prompt if I do not want to see the warning--which I have on as a safety precaution. So I bet the default could remove from playlist and send file to recycle bin in one move.

  • How to recover Deleted file from HARD DISK

By mistake my entire AVCHD file of 90 Mts  duration was deleted from my Hard Disk, this  I realised after a week., in the meantime I have not added or deleted any file from this hard Disk. I had given my this hard disk to my service engineer to recover the video., he has tried and recover some 40 mb file., but I cant open this recovered video file in Premiere or any other video convertor programme., also I cant get any information about Video.
Can anybody in the forum help me and suggest how to recover my deleted Video from the Hard disk

Hi, hard disk data loss is actually a hard task for many users 'cause most of them think this kind of problems is a complicated situation. Here are some tips you need to know after data loss happened.
    1. If you meet the file loss situation, keep calm and stop using your computer to do any read or write operation until you find the way to recover the lost files because any wrong operation.
    2. If you've lost a file, time is of the essence. As new files saved to Mac hard drive or storage devices, the original files gets overwritten. So do not use the drive or disk which your deleted files are stored before at all, until you have completed the scanning and recovery process.
    3. The system crashed or the files loss situation happens occasionally, so remember build a backup for the files periodically is strongly needed.
    4. If you meet the file loss situation again, stop using the Mac or storage device right now, use another computer to process the files recovery.
    5. Remember this, no matter at the normal time or after files recovery, build a backup for the files periodically is the best method to protect your files from data loss situation.

  • Unable to view *certain* folders on a USB disk shared by Airport Extreme

I have a 1 TB FAT32 formatted USB drive shared over an Airport Extreme (firmware 7.4.2).
A few days ago I was reorganising media files on the hard drive. I created a subfolder in a folder called 'Movies' and copied a couple of VOB files into the subfolder. Suddenly, the entire contents of the 'Movies' folder vanished. I unmounted and re-mounted the shared disk on the Mac (browsing to the base station in finder and clicking eject). I am able to see all other top level folders and other files on the shared drive, but the 'Movies' folder is empty. The Airport logs indicated a problem with the volume, so I disconnected the drive from the airport, plugged it into the mac and ran disk utility to verify the disk. No errors were reported.
Here is where it gets interesting.
    1) When I plug the USB drive into my Macbook Pro, I am able to mount the drive and browse all the directories, including the Movies folder - all my files are still there.
    2) If I plug the disk back into the airport and mount it on the mac, the 'Movies' folder appears empty.
    3) The hard disk usage reported (both in the airport utility and in finder) is consistent with the 'Movies' folder still being there, however the Movies folder shows up at Zero bytes in 'Get Info'
    4) If I open a terminal window and cd to the mounted hard disk, 'ls -al' reports no files. However, I can 'cd' to a sub-directory of the Movies folder that I know exists, and 'ls' shows all the files in the sub folder!
I can even copy files in the 'Movies' folder to another location if I know then name - but 'ls' cannot see it, and neither can 'du'
    5) I attached the drive to a Windows machine and ran chkdsk and even did a surface scan - no problems reported.
I'm stumped. Has anyone seen this wierd behaviour before? The disk is fine when mounted directly on a mac or windows machine - but when mounted and shared via the airport, the Movies folder is not visible, though it is definitely there!
    Help appreciated!

Hello nikkjazz. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) supports USB storage devices that use a block size of 512 bytes ... and is true whether the device is formatted for HFS+, FAT16 or FAT32. If yours is not, then it may explain why you can see the folders when the drive is directly attached to the Mac, but not so when connected to the AEBSn.

  • USB drive attached to Airport Extreme as a time machine backup?

I have a WD 750gb external USB drive that I was using as a "time machine" with my iMac. My Airport Extreme has a USB port and I want to move the WD over to there, but continue to use it as time machine. Possible to do this? If yes, then how?
    Thanks much

You can, but Time Machine uses a disk image file for the Time Machine archive (instead of a folder) when a network drive is used. Therefore, you may have to start your Time Machine archive over again.
If you have one Mac to back up with Time Machine, it is better to leave the drive attached directly to the computer over USB. Your initial and hourly Time Machine backups will complete faster.
