Deleted Files today... are they completely lost?

Hi.
Im writing on behalf of a mate who is new to macs. I dont know a lot about this so its probably useful me knowing anyway.
He deleted some movie files from 'all movies' which were actually in iPhoto's library.
He ran a program called 'Data Rescue' which didnt bring any of todays files back.... it bought back loads of videos from New Years and further back but none from today...
Any advice would be MUCH appreciated... please also post expensive solutions that might be better than free solutions...
Thanks

If a file recovery program like Data Rescue was unable to restore the files, they are probably gone permanently... they've probably already been overwritten. If your friend doesn't have any backups, he'll never see those files again. You should thump him on the forehead and tell him to start backing up! Point him towards my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups> for assistance with that.
The only other possibility for recovering those files that I can think of would be to pull out the hard drive and send it off to a data recovery service. I've never used such a service (thanks to having good backups), so I don't know much about them, but I know that they are extremely expensive. Plus, I think they (sometimes?) pull apart the hard drive in the process, so you never get it back.

  • HT1752 Hello, I updated my MacBook with OS X and lost all my photos (about 7 years of photos) on iphoto (now empty). Are they completely lost or is there a way I can retrieve them from my computer?

Hello, I updated my MacBook with OS X and lost all my photos (about 7 years of photos) on iphoto (now empty). Are they completely lost or is there a way I can retrieve them from my computer?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Today, I randomly happened to have less than 1GB of hard drive space left. I found very large "frame" files, what are they?

I found very large "frame" files, what are they & can I delete them? (See screenshot). I'm a (17 today)-year-old film-maker and can't edit in FCP X anymore because I "don't have enough space". Every time I try to delete one, another identical file creates itself...
If that can help: I just upgraded to FCP 10.0.4 and every time I launch it it asks to convert my current projects (I know it would do it at least once) and I accept, but everytime I have to get it done AGAIN. My computer is slower than ever and I have a deadline this friday
I also just upgraded to Mac OS X 10.7.4, and the problem hasn't been here for long, so it may be linked...
    Please help me!
    Alex

The first thing you should do is to back up your personal data. It is possible that your hard drive is failing. If you are using Time Machine, that part is already done.
Then, I think it would be easiest to reformat the drive and restore. If you ARE using Time Machine, you can start up from your Leopard installation disc. At the first Installer screen, go up to the menu bar, and from the Utilities menu, first select to run Disk Utility. Completely erase the internal drive using the Erase tab; make sure you have the internal DRIVE (not the volume) selected in the sidebar, and make sure you are NOT erasing your Time Machine drive by mistake. After erasing, quit Disk Utility, and select the command to restore from backup from the same Utilities menu. Using that Time Machine volume restore utility, you can restore it to a time and date immediately before you went on vacation, when things were working.
If you are not using Time Machine, you can erase and reinstall the OS (after you have backed up your personal data). After restarting from the new installation and installing all the updates using Software Update, you can restore your personal data from the backup you just made.

  • I'm having some difficulty with Time Machine.  It appears to be deleting backups from random dates on my external hard drive.  I am not deleting them.  Are they hidden and how do I prevent this from happening?  Can I retrieve them?

I'm having some difficulty with Time Machine.  It appears to be deleting backups from random dates on my external hard drive.  I am not deleting them.  Are they hidden and how do I prevent this from happening?  Can I retrieve them?

... I didn't know that Time Machine was more a last resort back up instead of main back up.
Don't rely upon Time Machine to the exclusion of all else. I compliment Time Machine with a periodic "clone". TM is much better than nothing, but it's a safety net, not a hammock
Here is my understanding of Time Machine's file deletion algorithm, distilled from Pondini's FAQ, Apple's KB articles, and my own observations.
Time Machine deletes ("thins") files from the backup disk as follows:
Hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first backup of the day
Daily backups over 30 days old, except the first backup of the week
Older backups get deleted when Time Machine requires space and you deleted them from the source disk.
Therefore, assuming TM has been performing at least one backup per day, backup files will remain available:
at least thirty days, if they existed on your Mac for at least a day
until you run out of space, if they existed on your Mac for at least a week
In addition to the above, Time Machine always keeps one complete copy of your source disk so that the entire volume could be restored if necessary. Any files that remain on your source volume will be present on the TM backup, no matter how old they are.
If you are using 250 GB of space on your source disk, its Time Machine backups are likely to require at least twice that much. A good estimate of the minimum required backup volume size would be about three times the size of your source disk - 1.5 TB in your case.
A more thorough explanation would require Pondini since he has plumbed Time Machine's mysteries far more than I have.

  • Deleting files which are offline.

What is the best way to get Lightroom to delete files which are offline? I don't use lightroom as a database or DAM - for that i use iMatch. I use lightroom only to process the raws and hate to see the thumb files with a question mark on them when they are really not available locally.
Sometimes i wish lightroom behaves like the photoshop bridge program in that it will display only files that are available but i understand that lightroom does what it does because it also acts as a DAM program - that's why it still keeps the thumb files even though they don't really exist locally. But i don't want to see them if they are not available - is this possible and what's the best way to batch delete all question-marked files? Thank-you.

Of course doing as John suggests mean all edits, history, snapshots, collection information, virtual copies are gone, gone, gone.
As you've said yourself, Lightroom is a database, not an browser and having access to offline files is a reason why people use Lightroom. Missing file handling could be better, but if you want to files on a missing volume, click on the Volume browser to close the folder view. Of course you'll still see the missing files in collection.

  • Is it ipad 1 1st generation - 4th generation or are they completly different as in ipad 1 then ipad 2 then ipad 3 then ipad 4

is it ipad 1 1st generation - 4th generation or are they completly different as in ipad 1 then ipad 2 then ipad 3 then ipad 4

The original or "1st generation" iPad is often referred to as the iPad 1.
The second update to the iPad is referred to as the iPad 2, the 3rd update as the iPad 3 and the fourth update as the iPad 4.
Some people will refer to each update as a "generation" of the iPad, but really what it amounts to is a release of an updated model (an updated model means a new step in generation).  Sometimes, the update is substantial (e.g. the iPad 2 to the iPad 3) and other times less so (e.g. The iPad 3 to the iPad 4).

  • Getting two preordered iphones delivered today, are they specfic to the lines or will I add the phone numbers in the set up process?

Getting two preordered iphones delivered today, are they specfic to the lines or will I add the phone numbers in the set up process?  Do I have to be careful which phone is set up for each number or doesn't it matter?

I'd like to know the same thing, but for a slightly different reason.
I bought one 4S using my wife's elligbility but it will be for my phone number. She will be getting my old 4.
As I was typing this Mr. UPS just dilivered my iPhone. I made a crack to the driver if he had a few on the truck, he laughed and said he has a LOT!
Anyway, I'm off to work. I'll try and sync it to my iTunes and see if it puts my phone number on it. If so, then I presume we can call or visit an AT&T store to have my wife's number put on my 4.

  • .pk and .pkf files (aka peak files) - What are they?

Peak files - ones with .pk and .pkf extensions - are files that Audition creates upon first opening an audio file, and they contain information about the way it's displayed on the screen. After you've worked on a file, saving the peak data as well as the file means that the next time Audition opens it, it can do so a lot faster - simply because it doesn't have to create all that visual data again.
By default, Audition saves peak files automatically for wav files, but it can't create them for other types. The reason for this is that it doesn't need them for those file types, as they can't be opened natively in Audition anyway; they have to be decoded into wav files first.
The difference between older .pk files and newer .pkf files (the ones that Audition CS5.5 uses) is that the .pkf ones contain Floating Point data. This means that unlike .pk files, they can display information about files where the signal exceeds 0dB. This means that if you do a mixdown where the levels are rather hot, you can display the levels correctly in Edit View by zooming the vertical display out. If you replay the file at this level though, it will distort, so you still have to normalize your resulting file so that the peaks don't exceed 0dB before making, say, a CD from it, a 16-bit integer copy, or any sort of compressed file.
Because of this fundamental difference though, .pk files and .pkf files aren't interchangable. So a .pkf file created with Audition CS5.5 won't work with any previous version. What will happen if you open one of these files in, say Audition 3 is that a new .pk file will be created, and stored alongside the .pkf one. And similarly, a .pk file from a previous version will be ignored if an older file is opened in Audition CS5.5 - it will create a new .pkf file for it.
Both .pk and .pkf files are normally hidden file types, so you won't see them in your files folder unless you've set it to display hidden files. It doesn't matter in the slightest if one gets deleted accidentally - which ever version of Audition you are using will recreate the appropriate one automatically. The only difference you will notice is that it takes longer to open the file. Not much of a problem with a very short one, but if your file is an hour long, the difference is significant.

In the light of a few recent posts about this, I should also add that you shouldn't try to open .pk or .pkf files on their own. By default, the file extensions aren't associated with Audition as far as the OS is concerned - they don't need to be, because Audition will look for the peak file associated with a wav file when it opens it, and the OS doesn't get involved in the organisation of this. And, on top of that, Audition doesn't regard the mere existence of a .pk or .pkf file as an excuse for opening. Why should it? It knows  that there's no audio in it!
So basically - You Can't Open .pk or .pkf Files.

  • "recovered"files. what are they?

I have 25,000 photos in a library. Also there are thousands of photos in a folder called "Recovered Folder" of which they show as ALBUMS. I have checked many of them, and they seem to be duplicates of the photos in PROJECTS.  I have tried to find out what they are, and why they are present, but only find a relationship to Vaults, which I do not use.
a)what are they and where did they come from?
    b) can I get rid f them withut loosing any of my photos?
    Thank you
    Asuch

    a) A "recovered" folder is akind of "Lost & Found" place.  When you repair an Aperure library, upgrade it, or rebuild it, Aperture will place there any items found in the Aperture library, that are no longer tied to versions in your projects.
    b) That is hard to tell, without seeing your library. Frequently these items are just items that should have been trashed, but the Trash did not empty properly. Then you can trash them. But sometimes versions are losing there connection to the originals, but you may not notice it immediately, until you try to edit the version or to export it. And then you will need the recovered item. The safest cause of action would be to create a backup copy of your library as it is now.   Then look at your recovered items and try to identify the original in its project, If you are sure, that you have a working copy of the recovered item, delete it.

  • When I back up my musical files where are they stored?

I got a nano a couple of years ago and put all my albums on it (synced through i-tunes). I hadn't used my nano for a few months and when I went back to it my library seemed to have been replaced.......is it possible that my teenage son overwrote the nano?. Where are my files actually backed up - would it be on the laptop I used during the backup process (even though I was signed on to I-tunes at the time) or are they in fact backed up remotely through the I-tunes site.
It is all so confusing - and frustrating.
I searched for my song library on my Click-free back up device but it does not seem to have stored the songs.....just stored the link to I-tunes.
Could somebody direct me on how to solve my problem.
    cheers

Your music should be in your iTunes library on your computer, and can be synced back to your nano as you did originally.  Have you opened iTunes and clicked on Music to see if your music is still there?

  • Desktop null files - What are they?

I have recently starting getting a file in my home folder repeatly.  The file name is
    Desktop-1.(null)
and the next one will be the same, but 2, 3, etc.  What are they?  I throw them out and later more get created.
    Thanks
    I'm on OS X 10.8.2

I've had them too. They are PDF files that I downloaded from the internet (and perhaps they failed or something?). Anyway, check it out: change their extension from .(null) to .pdf and you'll be able to read them and decide what to do with them.

  • My ipad mini has many emails which say 'no content' and are not deletable.  What are they are how do I delete them?

My ipad mini has many emails which say they have no content and I cannot delete them.  The emails do not show up on my MacBook Air.  What are they and how do I get rid of them?

Close the mail app and reset the iPad. Closing apps instructions are for iOS 7. If you're not running iOS 7, I assume that you know how to close apps in iOS 5 or 6. If you don't know how to close apps, just reset the iPad.
To close an app, drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

As for the "exec" files, by omitting the extension, you fooled the OS into thinking they were UNIX executable files.

  • SAP GRC 5.3 - Standard Text files for RAR - Are they complete

    Dear All,
Whether the standard text file SoD rule set provided by SAP covers all the standard SAP transaction codes which are available in ECC6.0 and other systems as well.
Because we found that there are some t-codes which are not form part of Standard SoD Rule set say eg., MIGO_TR - Transfer posting, ME11, ME58 - Create PO, CKME - Release planned prices etc.,. like this there are some standard t-codes which are not part of the functions in standard rule set
We have a challenge from the client that Standard rule set provided by SAP might have covered all the standard t-codes for SoD rule set and it has to be only customized to the extent of Custom t-codes (Y & Z T-codes).
Is this correct? How frequently the text files are updated. I remember the last release of text files is along with 5.3 version and there is no change from then onwards i.e. increasing t-codes in functions or increase in risks.
    Please advise.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Best Regards,

    Sri,
From SAP: u201CThe SAP ruleset will never be 100% complete as the definition of "complete" is unique for each company.  SAP goal is to ensure that the rules we provide are accurate and address the major segregation of duties concerns.u201D
A clear point that reflects that, it is that you will have to do the exercise to identify, analyze and include every Z (custom) transactions used by your customer within the standard SoD Matrix that SAP provides.
SAP provides updates for the Rule Set every Quarter.

  • Missing Files that are found and lost again

I have Photoshop Elements 10 that I am using with Windows XP Service Pack 3, a Pentium 4 CPU with 3 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and 48.6 GB of free disk space.
Yellow question marks continue to appear on the top left of some images in one of my catalogs even though these images have not actually been moved. The Organizer searches for the "missing file" and finds it quickly but why is it "missing"? I have gone through the albums in this catalog, completed the missing file searches on all the images so that no yellow question marks appear and when I go back to the catalog the next time I find the yellow question marks are there again! What is making the found file become lost again?

And what happens if it is 'unchecked' ?
It's good to check periodically if there are missing files but there is no necessity to let the Organizer do it automatically. Since checking is very quick, I am used to do it before any maintenance in the Organizer : backups, optimization...
