Deleted iMovie on rMBP - no back up disks

I deleted my iMovie app by mistake and it is not available for download on the App store because it came preinstalled. I have the base model of the Retina MacbookPro, so there are no restore disks.  Anything I can do to get it back? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Then the only option I know would be reinstalling Mountain Lion, but I don't think that will get it back for you. Perhaps you need to ask Apple Customer Service:

  • I accidentally deleted iMovie '08 and I can't get it back

I just got a new mac that came with Leopard and iLife '08. When I got it, I couldn't find iMovie '08, so I downloaded the update from the Apple website. It worked, and when I got it, I opened it but it had to "create video thumbnails" or something, but I forget. It took about an hour, and when it was done, I didn't even like the program that much. So I closed it, but when I tried to open it again, it had to do the loading for an hour thing again. So I started using my old imovie (06) and then my built in camera did not work on it, and I assumed that this was caused by the new iMovie, and I made the bad choice of deleting iMovie '08.
Today, I tried to download my new Canon ZR40 to my computer, and my computer did not even acknowledge that the camera was there, when when I tried to find it in Image Capture. So I remembered that you can easily download digital camcorders to iMovie 08, so I looked for it on my computer, but I could not find it. I tried downloading it off the Apple website again, but it did not work. And I need what's on this camera for school, and I NEED TO GET THE VIDEO ON MY COMPUTER. Is there a way that I can (A.) get iMovie '08 back or (B.) Find a way to download my camera's videos onto my computer? Thank you for your help.

You will need to install the software using the Software Restore DVD that came with your computer.
Insert the software restore DVD and read the instructions that you will find on the disk.
You cannot download the software from Apple as they only provide updates via the download NOT the full product.

    Hi i am alice

iMovie is part of the iLife suite of programs.
If you have 10.7 or 10.8 when the machine was purchased, just log into AppStore and accept the iLife for that machine and reinstall it all, it will replace iMove.
If you have 10.6 originally came on the machine, look on your second set of disks, there is a bundled installer that should put it back on, then Software Update fully to bring it current.
If you originally had 10.5 on the machine, stick the disk in and try to run the bundled installer, or use Pacifist from CharlesSoft to extract the program and then Software Update fully.

G'day.  I am using iMovie 11 and need to clear disk space.  How can I do that using an external drive, leaving me the option to go back and make changes or access old events or projects from that external drive?

The slightly bigger question is whether you want to move all movie content to the external drive (essentially meaning that drive will always need to be attached when you're working with your videos), or whether you just want to archive older videos off to the external drive.
If you want to move all videos, then just move the 'Movies' folder in your home directory to the external drive, then create an alias of the external 'Movies' back in to your home directory. Now the 'Movies' icon in your home directory will point to the external drive and everything will just work (as long as the external drive is attached when you launch iMovie)
If you want to archive older movies then each Movie should have its own subdirectory within your Movies folder. These can easily be moved off to the external drive, and moved back should you ever need to work on those movies again.

i accidentally deleted iMovies, how do i get it back?
i went to app store to get it but it says to accept but when i accept it says it that it was already accepted, my mac book is still under warranty.

You'd need to do a full install of the OS, not an update. You can use recovery (Command + R keys) during boot up or restart. Your files will not be deleted (unless you choose to erase your drive) - but make sure you have a backup anyway. General info here:

It depends how you installed it.
If you installed from your iLife 11 DVD, then you can insert the DVD and install it again.
If you purchased it from the Mac App Store, you can open the Mac App Store, go to the Purchases tab, and reinstall from there.

  • I accidentally deleted iMovie

I accidentally deleted iMovie and now I do not know how to get it back. My laptop was refurbished so it did not come with disks. please help!! I also have seen where people are suggesting to use timemachine but it was not enabled.

Check your Trash and see if you see the iMovie app. If so, right-click it and select Put Back. Then restart your Mac. May not work, but it is worth a try.
If that does not work, you can purchase a new copy from the Mac App Store for about $15.
If you have an older version of Mac OSX that does not include the Mac App Store, you may be able to find copies if the iLife 11 Retail Package on Amazon or eBay.

Project in Imovie 9 Only plays back still frames
I can see all the video clips but screen just goes black while going over the video. The video is still in the computer and has not been moved around.
Also if i play the imported video on the "Event" board it plays over it with no information coming back to the computer. Like if the files were offline.

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    iMovie pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    Macintosh HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named.
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
and find com.apple.iApps.plist - trash this too
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file/s out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    • Turn off Mac and disconnect Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes - will at least re-set FW-port
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    • Problems in iPhoto Library can affect iMovie to crash on start-up. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
    • iMovie updated ?
    • QuickTime updated ?
    • Mac OS version ?
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 4 - will not work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (will work under Leopard and Snow-Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie’08 v. 7.1.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (will work under Leopard and Snow-Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie’09 v. 8.0.6, Mac OS X.5.8 AND QuickTime 7.6.4 - is OK (will work under Leopard and Snow-Leopard)
From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

I run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac.

  • HT201272 Having a bad day my iTunes library got corrupted and my back up disk has failed how can I restore my purchases from the iTunes store

Having a bad day my iTunes library got corrupted and my back up disk has failed how can I restore my purchases from the iTunes store? When I try it tells me the pruchases have already been downloaded to this computer.

Does your purchased rmusic appears under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) ? If they do and you don't have the cloud symbol against them so as to re-download them, then do you still have the entries for them in your library i.e. where you would normally click on them to play them ? If you do then try deleting them from there (iTunes will be seeing them and assuming that you still have them somewhere) and they should then get the cloud symbol for re-downloading in the Purchased link.
If you aren't in a country where music can be re-downloaded then you could try contacting iTunes support and see if they will grant you a re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page,

If the Mac's firmware was updated, you can try this Internet Recovery:
Hold down Command + Option + R during restart or bootup; hold until you see a spinning globe (takes up to 10 minutes). Once in the Utilities window, use Disk utility to wipe the drive, then return to the window and choose to reinstall OS X. If that works, the OS will be installed without being tied to an Apple ID.
FWIW, if the firmware was updated, you will not be able to use the Snow leopard disk to install - I just did several tests and it does not work. You can, however, possibly install the SL onto an external drive and then clone it to the internal or (if you have a clone), boot from that and clone it back - I just tested that as well.
If the firmware was not updated, then you can use the SL install disk.

  • Deleting iMovie files & exported movies causes errors in all of iLife

I just went through quite an ordeal...
In an attempt to clean up some space, I deleted a bunch of my iMovie project files and movies after backing them up (files in the default Movies folder). I have deleted iMovie projects before with no issues.
This time, it caused errors in iDVD, iMovie, and iPhoto...it would say: "Connection failed. The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again." It would say this over and over and over again and often completely hang up my application so that I would have to force quit. This would repeat itself over and over...
I read about this in other forums and erased .plist files in User > Library, etc...This solved the problem for other people, but it kind of made it worse for me. Long story short, I ended up having to restore from Time Machine my entire system just to get iLife working again... I also searched for Aliases and externally referenced libraries or files, and I do not have any.
So now I have those files again. I want to delete them again. But I'm afraid! (P.S. This may also be related to deleting the Aperture Trial Library in the Photos folder...I am also posting about that to the Aperture forum.)
Does anyone know what the deal with this is? How come before I did not have problems but am now? How do I safely delete iMovie files without having this happen again?
    THANK YOU!

iMovie is a non-destructive editor, meaning that all original clips are maintained in the folder, even after editing. Until you render the movie to DVD, all the original files are still "in the background". Kind of hard for me to explain. Others here could give more technical details. You would have to delete your movie from the folder to regain all the hard drive space.
If your idea is to archive your movies, a better method is to record them back to tape. Otherwise, get an external drive to store the finished movies and then delete the original files.
One word of caution about emptying the iMovie trash. This has been known to cause problems with a work in progress and it is generally advised to leave the iMovie trash alone until your project is finished and burned to a DVD.

  • Back up disk is hugh

My MacBook Pro's HD has 38 GB on disk. My back up disk has 64 GB on disk. All it has on is the back ups it does from my laptop. Why does it have twice the stuff on it?
I also have another Macbook, and same story. The backup disk, which only has bacup stuff on it, has almost twice the material on it also.
What gives? Shouldn't the backup drives have a similar number of GB stuff on them as the computer hard drive? Is all that stuff nesecery? Should I remove some of it and how? Thanks.

Because Time Machine keeps previous copies of items you've changed or deleted, so if you find you made an error, you can probably recover the old version.
It varies a great deal, depending on how you use your Mac, but TM usually needs 2-3 times the space as the data it's backing-up.
You can delete old backups if you want, although TM will usually do that for you, automatically (unless you have the +Warn when old backups are deleted+ box checked in TM Preferences > Options.
But *never, ever move, change, or delete anything* in your backups via the Finder. Use the procedure in item #12 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip.*

  • Back up disk is full, can I keep backing up?

My 1TB back drive is full so I get messages now from Time Machine saying the disk is full and the oldest back up will be deleted to make room for the latest back up... the oldest back up is usually pretty old, like May 09 or something so I don't mind it being erased.
My question is, is there any harm in just continuing like this without upgrading to a larger back up disk? I don't mind it deleting these 6 month-plus old files because I would never use them anyway.
Just trying to avoid buying a 2TB disk as I use a raid drive and would have to buy 3 in order to fill it!
    Thanks.

no, there is no harm. you can just let TM do its thing and keep deleting old backups to make room for new ones.

Use Pacifist to extract a new copy of iMovie from your computer's original disks, and then rerun all iMovie updaters applicable to the version you restored.

  • "Can't connect to a current Time Machine back up disk"

    OS X Yosemite, version 10.10.1
Macbook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)
Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Computer is supposed to seamlessly back up to Time Capsule via wi-fi, but ever since upgrading to Yosemite it's been broken.  "can't connect to a current Time Machine back up disk"  is the message that pops up, just after it shows me the files on my Time Machine for a split second.  So it sees them, for a moment, then it pops up the message and freezes my computer.  I have to do a hard reboot.  I tried the instructions here: OS X Yosemite: If Time Machine can’t find your backup disk,  and various instructions I've found on the internet regarding fixes from deleting plist files to whatever.
This is very annoying, I'd like to fix the problem.  And also vent, this *****, this isn't why I purchase Apple products, it's a known problem and they aren't publishing a fix.  Apple isn't very elegant anymore, it's cumbersome, troublesome, and I'm wondering why I'm spending the extra when those were the benefits I was paying for.

Don't upgrade next time until the following version is out.. I updated not long ago to Mountain Lion.. and it works very nicely. Apple is playing MS game.. don't fix the problems.. just release a new fangled OS. So issues that have existed over Mavericks and all its updates are still there and in fact exacerbated in Yosemite.
To fix your issue.. You may need to do some major work.. did you upgrade or clean install Yosemite??
I guess it is too much to ask if you still have your previous OS install intact?? Making a bootable clone before updating is a necessity now IMHO.
TM does not really allow you to go back to the previous OS.. but you can clean install Mavericks or whatever you used and then recover your files.
To fix Yosemite a clean install can be a big help. Especially as wireless is a major flaw.
Do you own the thunderbolt to ethernet adapter? It is like $35 and a well worthwhile gadget to own.. since I think your mac has no ethernet port.
See if it works ok by ethernet.
Otherwise factory reset the TC and try mounting it manually in finder by IP address, not name.
ie in Finder use Go, Connect to server and type in the IP.. thusly
    SMB://10.0.1.1 (replace with actual IP)
It is a bit tricky if the IP is not static.. but start there and see what happens.
Remember to save the password to the TC in the keychain when asked.
