Deleted iPhoto library, no storage deleted?

Hi.
Yesterday I deleted my entire iPhoto library (82 GB). All I did was move the library to the trash. But when I emptied the trash the harddrive storage hadn't changed at all. And I really need those 80 GB. Anyone here who knows how to fix it?
I moved my iPhoto library to an external hard drive before deleting it (No Time Machine). I don't know if this has anything to do about it. But I hope someone can help me, because I really need those 80 GB :-)

Ok, run Repair disk.
First reboot the computer while holding the command and R keys down (two keys together).
You will get the screen shown here:

Select Disk Utility and Continue.
When DU is running, select your hard drive on the left, click First Aid, then Repair Disk.
When that is done, quit DU.
Restart the Mac as usual.

Deleting iPhoto library after Photos is installed

Once the Photos Application is installed and is running, can the original iPhoto library(s) be deleted to recover space?

OmniDiskSweeper is confused.
Photos is using an OS X feature (actually, it's a UNIX feature) called "hard links" which makes it LOOK like there are two copies of a photo, but in fact there is only one on disk. If you "delete" one of them, one of the links will be removed, but the original photo itself will only be removed from disk if the second "link" is deleted (making the "link count" to the photo 0).
This makes it look like twice the space is taken up, but in fact that's wrong.
Once you have safely imported your iPhoto library to Photos, you can delete the iPhoto library and Photos will be fine. HOWEVER, Apple (and I) STRONGLY recommend that instead of deleting the iPhoto library, that you archive it off on storage somewhere, and leave it there for a long time "just in case" anything bad ever happens. Because if you don't, and you lose the photos, I'll be all out of sympathy

IPhoto vs Aperture--deleting iPhoto library

I just installed Aperture 3 and in doing so, i chose the option of copying my iPhoto library into Aperture. The instructions from Apple--available here: http://www.apple.com/aperture/iphoto-to-aperture/how.html -- say that if I then select the option to "Consolidate Masters to Library" I can safely delete my iPhoto library. But when I chose that option, I got a message that 'there are no referenced photographs." Can this be? My iPhoto Library is 124 GB; the new Aperture library is only 82 GB. Can I now safely delete the iPhoto library and have all my pictures in Aperture or is there something else I need to do. (To be safe, I have already backed up my entire iPhoto library on an external drive.

2. There is a subfolder in the Aperture folder called "Masters" with a whole bunch of folders in it and pictures are in the ones i opened, But I don't know if these are "masters" or "versions"--but I assume they are masters.
Aperture does not store the versions in the library as actual images - Aperture only stores instructions on how to render the version from the master. This saves disk space - you can create many versions from the same master without additional storage necessary, and this makes the lossles workflow possible. You always can undo your adjustments step by step, The version image will be created when you export the image. So if you see an image file in the library it is the master image file, if it is in the "Masters" folder.
So I think I am good to go, but all of my (former) iPhoto events show in the inspector column. And when I open a project in Aperture, and click on a photo, the event in iPhoto where the photo was originally found is highlighted in the inspector bar. So, why is the iPhoto event being highlighted if the photos are now in an Aperture library? Is that cause for worry?
Aperture recreated the iPhoto library structure in the Aperture Library as far as possible.
For each iPhoto event you now will find an Aperture project. These projects are the containers of your images. Each image has a project where it is stored. Also you should see your iPhoto albums, books, and Slideshows. and the images should be tagged with captions and keywords.
There is no cause to worry - all iPhoto images are now in Aperture; and Aperture mirrors your old library structure; this is supposed to be helpful, not to confuse you
The inspector panel in Aperure is very different from the iPhoto Inspector. Everything seems to be there twice, but these are just different views of the same items in the database.
The upper part lets you view the Library by projects, places, faces, etc., an the lower part shows the storage structure - how the library is organized by folders and projects; and if you select an image in the upper part - in projects view or Photos view, then Aperture will highlight the project where the image is contained.

If I use a backup machine that has a folder of my iphoto library, can I delete my Iphoto library without the machine updating and deleting the photos as well?

Hey everyone, I have a Lacie 1 TB back up machine that I use to backup every once in a while everything I have in my macbook pro.
I don't know if there's a difference between a hard disk in which you save whatever you want or a back up machine that backs up whatever you have in your computer once you connect it, so, My question is the following:
Having backed up my Iphoto (I checked if there's a folder in the machine with all my photos), can I now get rid of all my photos in the laptop so there's more space? If I delete my photos (in Iphoto), does the back up machine automatically update its folders and delete my saved iphoto contents as well?

I'm doing this because my laptop is running really slow lately and makes a lot of noise (like an airplane getting ready for take off) even though I've used it for a year.

You're using Time Machine to back up to the External Disk.
Back to your first question:

No.
Time Machine keeps a rolling back up of your data. Eventually, anything you delete from your Mac will be deleted from iPhoto too.
If space is an issue then get another HD. They're not expensice and you can put your iPhoto Library on it.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

IMac 20-inch on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, my photos from my iphoto library have been deleted. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine, help please.

I have an imac 20-inch Late 2006 model on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, somehow the application ccleaner has deleted my photos from my iphoto library. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine.
To restore photos I have followed the steps below
Quit iPhoto.
Connect your Time Machine drive.
In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
Enter Time Machine. (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.
I dont get the option in step 6 as I dont have an iphoto library file to choose? Does anyone know why?

Thanks but as mentioned all is intact, even at step 3 I can see the current library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library which has no photos, but when I access time machine any point before the NOW option the iphoto library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library is missing from the finder window.
As you can see here it is
and now its gone. I have no explanantion.
How do I go about moving this question as you suggested.

Recovered deleted iPhoto library is in wrong format?

My iPhoto library was deleted so I used Disk Drill Pro and seemingly successfully recovered them. I recovered them and saved them to a USB drive but when I click the recovered library, iPhoto says it doesn't recognize the format.
This is what the contents on the USB drive show:
For 'iPhoto Library.photolibrary' I selected 'show contents' and this is what it reveals:
in 'albums' it shows .apalbum named files that are Unix Executable Files, all of which are exactly 2KB in size.
in 'apdb' it shows .apdb-journal named files that are also Unix Executable Files
in 'folders' it shows .apfolder named files that are also Unix Executable Files
When I double click 'iPhoto Library.photolibrary', iPhoto launches but gives this error message:

Here's the thing: Picasa claims to work with the iPhoto Library but it uses a hack rather than the supported APIs to do it. So as the OS and the app get updated from time to time, the effect of Picasa on the Library can change. Personally, I simply would not allow Picasa to run on the iPhoto Library. Instead, export the pics from iPhoto, do what you wish in Picasa and then import the product back to iPhoto.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Delete iphoto library mac

I would like to use iphoto but I do not want to deal with the complexity of unhelpful file names, and the fragemented way it organzes stuff on the disk. So I am thinking I can import and edit and and info etc and then export the photos and then delete the entire iphoto library.
The next time I load a batch of photos from my camera iphoto will automatically create a new library and I can repeat the process - thus avoiding lots of junk gathering on the disk, organizing the photos in my own way, and using iphoto to edit photos.
Does this seem right? Or would this cause problems?

No, and it's quite unnecessary.
I do not want to deal with the complexity of unhelpful file names, and the fragemented way it organzes stuff on the disk.
The file names are assigned by your camera, and there is nothing fragmented about how it organises anything on the disk. But even if there was it wouldn't matter as you never access things via the Finder.

On top of that what you plan will utterly disable the three key features of iPhoto - non-destructuve editing and OS integration and photo management. If you don't want either of those it begs the question, why would you use iPhoto at all? Life would be much more simple for you to use an app that works the way you want.

Deleted iphoto library via finder with no gain in drive space

My iphoto library was getting too large so I backed it up and deleted it (in finder). I then noted that I did not get the 112GB of space back on my hard drive that I was expecting. I read a few threads and discovered that I was supposed to have deleted the photos within iphoto itself... so, I restored the library into its original location and deleted the photos within iphoto itself and emptied the trash. Going into iphoto, it states that no photos are present in both the 'events' folder as well as the trash, but I have not gained any space on my drive...
Please help me reclaim my drive...

Deleted iphoto library - recovered library not photos help

I was trying to clean up the photos in my Picture folder and accidentally deleted the library folder. I have recovered the folder but not the pictures. How do I get the pictures back? I opened iphoto and was asked about a library so I checked the library with the photos and it did not import or reinstall them. I do have two libraries (library and library_1).
Any ideas?

Which library do you want to use?
hold down the option (or alt) key and use the Locate command to point iPhoto at the required library.
If that doesn't get your pictures back, what do you see in the iPhoto Window - utterly empty? blank squares where your pics should be?

"iPhoto Library" icon/folder deleted by mistake, how do i recover it?

Fist off i am not a iMac genius, so bear with me as you read . I Just bought an Imac (21.5 monitor and 1TB with OS X Lion 2012 version). After transferring all my photos in the "Picture" folder (click, drag and drop into the "finder" then into the "picture" folder (not iPhoto yet) I then selected all the photos (dozens of folders and over 8,000 photos) click and drag then into iPhoto and they all successfully transferred (which took several minutes). I noticed when transferring most of the photos over it gave me the option to either transfer or discard duplicates, i chose to not import the duplicates. Since i had ALL my photos in iPhoto i decided to delete the old file that i copied earlier and empty the trash. In the deleting frenzy i accidentally deleted the "iPhoto Library" icon/folder )or whatever that picture is) and every time I open up iPhoto now it asked to either locate "iPhoto Album 1" (which can not be found) or start another album (which would be "iphoto Library 2" which opens up with none of my pictures.) Sooooo, after freaking out i downloaded 2 file recovery software program which seems to have found most if not all the pics (still need to pay to get a key code to get them back), however since i delted the photos that transferred into the finder>picture folder and did not delete any photos form iPhoto itself is there a way to get back the "iPhoto Library" that housed all my pictures? In theory all my pics are still in the hard drive but i do not know where to look for that little "iPhoto Library" icon/folder. What is the best Apple/Mac recovery software to purchase to get them back? Or are they all the same? Or is there a file buried deep in the hard drive that are hiding all my photos that tech support can guide me to? And if there is, how to i search for that? Any help would be great!

No.
Inside that package are thouands of files - your photos, thumbnails, face thumbnails, database, metadata, cache and other files. To reconstruct the Library you would need to get all of these in exactly all the correct locations. That's not going to happen.
Best you can hope for is to recover the actual photos and then start over from scratch.
Unless you have a back up of course...

Delete iPhoto Library OK?

Because iPhoto started crashing and was not fixed even by a hard drive wipe & OS / iLife reinstall, I just installed Aperture trial, which seems to be working fine. I imported my 25gb iPhoto library, all good. New Aperture library is similar size. Can I now remove the iPhoto library (25gb) to a disconnected backup drive, or is Aperture still dependent on those originals in iPhoto Library?

You did the right thing to copy them originally just in case you had a problem with Aperture and needed to revert back to iPhoto or re-import the images. If you are confident you have no problems related to the import from iPhoto, you can delete the iPhoto Library if you wish. There’s no hooks that I’ve heard of back to your iPhoto Library.
You could always verify you have no referenced masters outside your Aperture Library via Files -> Locate Referenced Files... after you have selected all the images you imported from iPhoto. If that tells you there are no referenced files, you’re safe.
But being very cautious, I would still recommend you retain the iPhoto Library for some time unless you really need the space to be freed up.

Imported iPhoto library, can I delete the iPhoto events?

I'm very new to Aperture, so far I'm impressed.
I have imported my iPhoto library and now I see a folder called 'iPhoto Lirary' that contains 'Events' and then events (that look like Aperture projects).
The question is, can I delete the 'iPhoto Library' folder?
and also, can I, delete the Aperture projects without impacting the actual pictures?

The library is the humongous collection of files and relationships between the files -- it is the Aperture database, stored in a Mac OS "Package". It's the thing you "open", like you open a document or spreadsheet to see what you've previously stored in it.
A Project is a logical group of photos within a library. Aperture allows you to create as many projects as you like within your library, and you can store as many photos as you like within each project (although some users here have found poor performance with 2000+ photos in a single project).
What I wasn't clear with was, are the photos stored in the library and files I see in a Project are 'sortcuts' to the photos in the library?
I suppose that depends on your point of view concerning referenced versus managed. I prefer to think that all my photos are part of the Aperture library, but only the managed masters are actually stored within the library. With that line of thinking, all of my photos in a project are the actual photos - some of them are stored within the library (managed) and some are stored outside (referenced). When I think of "shortcuts", I think of albums. Albums in Aperture are like playlists in iTunes. A photo lives in one project in your library, but you can point to that photo in a many different albums. Aperture doesn't take up extra space in each of the albums; rather it just points back to (is a short cut to) the photo in a project.
If I Import into a Project, are the photos stored in the Library?
You should make sure you read about masters versus versions. It's hard to talk about how Aperture works (with even an innocuous sounding question like yours) without understanding masters versus versions. Master photos are stored in the library package if they are managed; they are stored where you tell Aperture to store them if they are referenced. Versions aren't really stored anywhere -- they are virtual, merely a set of instructions on how to manipulate (adjust) a master. However, thumbnails and previews for all photos are stored within the library.
Aperture tries to minimize the necessity to know if your photos are references or managed -- it really should not matter since Aperture is keeping track of them all. With Aperture, that distinction between managed and referenced is relevant in only 2 conditions: only managed masters are backed up when you create a vault; and only masters which are immediately accessible can be edited with adjustments. For the latter, that means that 1) all managed photos, and 2) only referenced photos which are on a drive which is currently connected to your system, are available for adjustments.

There's a forum for iPhoto issues and I suggest that you bring your query there. But before you do, have a think about what you've written. Is there anything in there that might allow someone to help you? The only possible answer is to restore from your back up if that's all you're offering.
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

Can I delete iPhoto library and iPhoto in 10.10.3?

After upgrading to OS X Yosemite 10.10.3, I can use Photos.app instead of iPhoto.app.
The thing is, there are two photo libraries in my finder. So can I delete iPhoto.photolibrary without affecting my photos in Photos.photoslibrary?( I chose iPhoto library when setting up Photos.app)
Now given Photos.app, am I to understand that I can completely ignore iPhoto from now on and delete iPhoto.app from my mac?

I have done just that, not sure in your case regarding the library's - I let Photos create its own library and not importing from iPhoto's, but I think which ever option you use when first starting Photos it will only use the Photos library after the initial import. Try moving iPhoto library to trash without emptying and open Photos, if all ok you can then delete.
I removed the iPhoto app as well gaining over 1.5 GB of space, also tracked down the other minor files in ~/Library/Caches and Preferences (plus a few other places) - but these are very small files and if you prefer can be left alone.
Lastly, if you delete iPhoto app you may get a prompt from App Store regarding reinstalling, read somewhere to stop that you need to remove any pkg files in Macintosh HD/Library/Receipts - if you do this last part make sure you only remove pkg files that contain "iphoto" in the description!
