Deleted Keychain and Time Machine

I was using the widget secret note pad and didn't realize the notes were stored in Keychain. I deleted what I thought were several copies of the password for the widget, but were the notes. The deleted notes are not in the trash and are not backed up in Time Machine. I have 2 questions. Is there a way to restore the deleted notes (trash has not been emptied, but they are not there)? Why are they not in the backup on Time Machine? I restored several dates from Time Machine and they have not been restored.
Thanks

According to the documentation (http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/business/secretnotepad.html), the data is stored in your Keychain.
Did you restore your Keychain(s)?
The notes are probably in the one in your home folder:
<your home folder>/Library/Keychains
But there are (at least) two others:
<your internal HD>/System/Library/Keychains
<your internal HD>/Library/Keychains

  • Deleted Folders and Time Machine

    I have a hughe Problem,
about six days ago something happened to my Mac... a complete Folder was deleted... I do not know how.
Now I wanted to pick it from the Backup-from Time Machine and see... All Backups older than six days are also GONE !!!
Also i notice that in the morning wehn I touch may Mac (I do not switch it off)  I get notice that the Mac is now restarted and got a counting number  (Meanwhile it is shown in my network as iMac (9)  !!!!!!
WHAT the **** happenned six days ago ??????

You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi. Rename the computer in the Sharing preference pane.
As for your Time Machine problem, depending on how much space there is on the backup volume, you may not have any snapshots older than six days.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    tmutil listbackups
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If any personal information appears in the output, edit before posting, but don’t remove the context.

  • Old FileVault crashed my MacBook Pro, had to delete, reinstall and Time Machine restore failed. Trying to manually rebuild. No iPhoto pics, no iTunes music and NO DOCUMENTS found! Any thoughts?

Here's the ordeal. I'm running a 2007 MacBook Pro 17 inch with Lion OS. When I converted to Lion, I didn't have enough room on my harddrive to convert to the new FileVault, so I remained on the old system. Less than a week ago I reboot my computer because iPhoto seems to be stuck on "cataloging" my photos, though after days of letting it run, it doesn't do anything. After the reboot, my computer appears as if it had been reset to factory settings with all my programs gone, etc. I'm like, hey, I've got Time Machine, I'll restore it. After the restore is run, when I go to login, I get the dreadful error message, "You are unable to log into the FileVault user "John" at this time. Logging into the account failed because an error occurred". I searched the internet via my iPhone for suggestions and followed everyone of them, all the way down to erasing my harddrive and reinstalling Lion. So I get back into my computer and think I'm golden. I go to restore my computer via Time Machine and wham....I'm right back to that error message. I think, ok, I'll do it again. This time it messes us even more, giving me two login screens, one for the new Lion like before I restored the computer and then a second, as if it were restored, but unable to login. On top of that, I couldn't get back to the Command-R page! I thought I was really screwed! Well, I finally figured a way back, or maybe it was just that it finally decided to cooperate, I don't know, but I erased my harddrive again, and reinstalled again and thought, well, I'll rebuild manually by selecting what I want to restore from the Time Machine drive. I was able to get all my applications back and running, but to my dismay, I seemingly have lost all my iTunes music (except that which Apple has graciously setup to redownload now "thank you!) plus all my iPhoto's and even worse, all my DOCUMENTS!!!! Here I thought Time Machine from backing all this stuff up, but with over a years worth of back-ups I cannot locate any photos, music, or my documents on my drive to extract! Needless to say, I will never be using Time Machine again to back up my computer, I'll find another program or at least do it all manually. But my question is: am I looking in the wrong places for this files? Are they hidden under some unknowning folder that doesn't list it as music, photos or files? I can manage with the music, I can live with the photos because my wife has many of them on her computer and I have many uploaded to Facebook, but my files! My documents, thousands of them, many with information I won't be able to compile again, seemingly gone unless someone out there has any ideas?!!!
I even had iPhoto search the drive for photos and after hours of the barber shop pole spinning I cancelled the command for I figured it wasn't going to find anything.
If anyone has any suggestions, or if Apple, you are reading this and can provide some direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also - my battery has been telling me "service battery" for a LONG time and then it switched to "replace soon" som time ago. Can't really see what this has to do with anything but whatever.
That could conceivably explain all the problems you're describing. Replacing a Mac's battery should not be postponed since a failed battery will cause other problems to occur. It is also possible that its hard disk has failed, which means the information on it may soon become unrecoverable.
... my latest TM back up was from April 2014, can I just run this when I have rescued everthing and then it might not be as slow?
If that Time Machine backup remains intact, it may be the only viable means of recovering that Mac's information. I suggest you do not attempt to restore its contents to your ailing Mac.
Given that you are having trouble creating a newer Time Machine backup you should stop using that Mac immediately and have it serviced as soon as you are able. Do not take it to anyone other than Apple or a service facility authorized by Apple, for the very reasons you explained. If there are no Apple Stores in your vicinity search for an Authorized Apple Service Provider using the Contact Us link below. Use one of the options that appear under Contact Apple Support. The language on that page will be different for your location.

  • Is it possible to delete files from time machine?

Is it possible to delete files from time machine? I had a drive crash, restored the files to a new drive, and now the old versions and the new versions of the files are both backed up, taking up a mountain of drive space. Do I just have to wait 'til the drive gets full and then tell it what to delete first?

Hi, I need help in a related problem. I have 500gb time capsule. I needed larger hard drive, so I now use TM to back up to a different 1tb hard drive. So I don't need the TC as a TM back up device. But I want to use the TC's hard drive as an extra external hard drive. I deleted the files that were on it. but it still shows it has a sparsebundle file with a size of over 400gb ( probably the size of the old backups). When I use disk utility to try to erase it, I am not offered the erase tab. This "disk" does show on the desk top as a mounted disk (I think) with only 53 gb free. How can I set this up so all the disk space is free and I can use it for storing files, not as a back up? Thanks

  • How do I recover deleted notes from Time Machine?

Ok, I was away on a business trip for 3 weeks.  While in the hotel, I was looking at my notes on my iPhone (I use iCloud with notes on an iPad, iPhone and Mac Mini running OSX Mavericks and time machine backups).  I noticed iCloud had duplicated a couple of notes.  I deleted the duplicate of each.  Then the next time I went to check, any trace of those notes were gone.
I'm looking to figure out how to restore them  with Mavericks. With Mountain Lion, it was fairly easy to go in to the mail folder in time machine, but now that notes are seperate from Mail, I'm having trouble figuring this out.
      Thanks

  • I have a 500 gb hard drive partitioned for files and time machine but when i connect it to my mac only the time machine one shows up

well as the title says i have a 500gb hard drive with 2 partitions one with time machine and one for files it worked perefectly until yesterday only the time machine partition appeared in finder, i checked disk utility and both partitions appeared but the one for files appeared in grey and when i press mount an error comes up.

The repair shop likely replaced a major circuit board on your MacBook Pro, so Time Machine thinks that you have a "new" computer and it wants to make a new complete backup of your Mac.
You are going to have to make a decision to either add another new Time Capsule....or USB drive to your existing Time Capsule....and in effect start over with a new backup of your Mac and then move forward again.
For "most" users, I think this is probably the best plan because you preserve all your old backups in case you need them at some point, and you start over again with a new Time Capsule so you have plenty of room for years of new backups.
Or, as you have mentioned, you have the option of erasing the Time Capsule drive and starting all over again. The upside is that you start over and have plenty of room for new backups. The downside is that you lose years of backups.
Another option....trying to manually delete old backups individually....is tricky business....and very time consuming. To get an idea of what is involved here, study this FAQ by Pondini, our resident Time Capsule and Time Machine expert on the Community Support area. In particular, study the pink box.
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/12.html
Once you look through this, I think you may agree that this type of surgery is not for the faint of heart.  I would suggest that you consider this only if one of the other options just cannot work for you.

  • Deleting Files in Time Machine Backup

I found a problem that others may or may not experience. When attempting to delete files that are in Time Machine's backups the Action worked to Delete All Copies once. When I tried deleting another file using the same method, I couldn't put my password into the admin window. The window was on the screen but it acted like it was in the background. Mouse clicking didn't do anything.
After a restart, I was able to go back to the same file and activate the Action to delete all the copies.
If others experience this as well, I'd call it a bug.

It is actually better if you choose the folders or files you don't want Time Machine to get near to from the System Preferences.. The whole folder of backup is somehow messed up.
Just go to your Time Machine preferences, and put the folder you don't want backed up and Time Machine will do the job for you, rather than getting your hands dirty with the manual method

  • Deleting files on Time Machine HDD

I have a folder containing 2GB or more of music that I don't need backed up any longer. How can I free up the space on my Time Machine HDD and delete this folder?
Does Time Machine just reference this folder once or does it continuously make back ups of your system? I can go back in to the Time Machine drive and find this folder listed for every back up ever made by Time Machine.
What about all the huge bit torrent files I've downloaded? How can I cherry pick and delete them off Time Machine's HDD? I'd like to have more than 12GB left on my 500GB back up drive!

Don't do it manually. I wouldn't even know how, since Time Machine is using multi-linking to make one copy of a file appear to be in multiple date/time archive folders. So if a file never changed during the whole time you have been using Time Machine, it should only be stored once. But if you look in your archive using Finder, it appears to be in every one of your date/time archive folders.
The way to do what you want is through the Time Machine +flying through space+ interface.
Open a Finder window, then go into Time Machine. In the cool interface, navigate to the folder or file you want to eliminate from your backup. Right (Control) click on it and select +Delete All Backups of "<name of the item>"+.

  • Logic and Time Machine?

Curious if Time Machine backs up deleted audio files. For instance, if I'm tracking a live band using 18 mics, or whatever, and I immediately delete all the audio files for that take, moves them to the trash, because it was bad, does time back up all those audio files as well? I've entered time machine after running a backup after sessions and it does not appear to. But I'm still a little uncertain.
    Logic 10.1.1
    OSX 10.10.3

Not sure I really understand the cycle thing. I back up to an external drive. I plug it in manually and run the back ups. I don't leave it plugged in all the time.
But my understanding is that time machine creates backups locally when the external drive is not plugged in, then moves the backup to the extenal drive once connected and time machine backup is initiated.
Probably the best solution would be to create the projects in a folder that is excluded from time machine and then move the projects to a location that is backed up by time machine once I want them backed up.
    What do think?

  • MacBook Pro Disk Space Question and Time Machine

    Hi all,
I know this is probably a "noob" question, but I have been backing up my laptop (2009 Mac OS X 10.6.8) onto an external hard drive set up for Time Machine, and now my MacBook Pro only has 1.15 GB available of free space after the many years of usage and saving things onto it (such as images, movies, etc.). I had a question: Are these files backed up onto Time Machine and so can I delete them from my laptop without losing them? I am concerned about losing them and am not sure how Time Machine really works; if I delete these files from my laptop in order to free up space, then backup my computer onto Time Machine, will they be deleted from the Time Machine drive also?? I need to free up a lot of space on my laptop but also don't want to lose any pictures and videos from over the years.
    Thanks in advance.

My question is, how do I effectively "copy over" files onto my new external hard drive? Is it as easy as connecting the hard drive via usb
Easy as drag and drop, yes indeed.  Could almost do it with your eyes closed.
Entire user account, ....no, just get all your files, you created, saved, made, work on ALL VITAL DATA you "dont dare lose" etc.  drag it over, make files in the HD showing where things are, etc.
There are of course a 1000 ways to organize folders and data on external HD, ..pick what suits you.
    Keep it simple.

  • Deleting Backups from Time Machine to Make Room

Deleting Backups from Time Machine to Make Room
So, I went into my 1.5 terabyte back-up drive and deleted a number of the TM backups because the drive was getting too full. (I also use that drive to store “permanent” photo files in other folders.)
Evidently, the computer does not recognize the deletions because the drive shows the same miniscule amount of space as it did prior to the deletions.
I know people have talked about using “actions” button in the gear icon. However, I can’t find that.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Tek

    Thanks for the reply, V.K.
    Unfortunately, I deleted via the finder and then emptied the trash. :-}
I know now, (after the fact) that this was the wrong thing to do. However, I didn’t find a “delete” option within TM.
It all seemed “logical” at the time. . . and quite frankly, still does. Why the heck is TM so difficult to control? Why can’t one just set it for X number of backups and have an easy to access delete button? (grumble, grumble)
I looked at the FAQs, but am still not clear on how to find the “action” button. I am using a laptop with no “right click” feature. The mouse is a one piece model.
My backup drive is directly attached, but, only when I want to backup since I work on a MB pro laptop.
    So please:
    How do I correct this?
Do I need to format the backup drive and partition? I don’t want/need so many backups cluttering my drive. I need space for permanent photo archives which are very large. These are now merely in a separate folder on the backup drive.

  • Setup Time Capsule as wireless device and Time Machine with Ethernet?

I'm running the latest version of Airport Utility (6.3.4) with a TC a1254 and Macbook Pro platinum late 2007.
      I have a modem/router Ryge model Wa41r.
Ive tried everything I could find in the forums and in expert pages and can't configure my Time Capsule as a Wireless Device connected to the modem/router and Time Machine with Ethernet Cable.
I tried letting it configure itself, it held the wifi signal for over 5 min then turned off. Never that way worked again.
Then I configured with other examples seen in Apple communities and expert Apple pages, but it conflicted with my routers signal. I turned off the Wireless Lan Interface and it turned off the Ethernet cable with the connection as well. I tried giving my TC different IP address.
So my Time Capsule  gives me this status in flicking amber: Internet connection and Conflicting DCHP Range. (when I connect to my Mac the Internet works)
And strangely the wireless signal appears in my Macbook but not in my Android Phone.
Works fine doing backups when asked via ethernet.
Also when I go to check on it on Airport Utility in other wifi devices it appears but says "Device Not Found - device name- was previously part of your network. Check that is still in range...etc"

I would like to help you but you need to clear up some things..
A Time Capsule is plugged into the network by ethernet.. you back up to it using wireless or ethernet.. it should make no difference which.
    When you say this..
Ive tried everything I could find in the forums and in expert pages and can't configure my Time Capsule as a Wireless Device connected to the modem/router and Time Machine with Ethernet Cable.
I cannot understand.. The Time Capsule plugs into the main modem router.. and should be in bridge mode..
Time Machine is not hardware.. it is  the backup software on the computer.. there is no way you can connect Time Machine with ethernet cable. .you can connect the computer with Ethernet Cable..
But you need to clarify please.
If you wish to connect TC to the Modem router by wireless this is not possible. It must connect by ethernet.
You can connect your computer to it using either wireless or ethernet.
And strangely the wireless signal appears in my Macbook but not in my Android Phone.
It is likely the wireless name is not valid.
Make sure all names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. 2-20 characters.. Do not use the Apple recommended names.. they can be totally wrong.
Also the password for wireless should be 8-20 characters but same rules.. pure alphanumeric mixed case and numbers.
    Start again.
    Factory reset the TC.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Plug it into the main router by ethernet.
Do the setup via the airport utility in a Mac or iOS device.
    Follow the setup instructions above.
Then you can connect to the TC LAN ports by ethernet or use wireless on the computer.
Your modem WA41R. I cannot find details in English . .they are all Spanish so we may be having difficulty of language here.
But if the modem is working as router the TC has to be in bridge mode.. it will not work properly in router mode.
So you should see it set as bridge here.

  • My Book and Time Machine

I use both MyBook for Mac and Time Machine to backup my computer.
I do backups once a week with MyBook. When I do a new backup are files/folders from previous backups (which are now deleted from my computer) kept in MyBook and Time Machine.

The WD SmartWare software keeps a predefined number of backups, this is a setting within the software. You'd want to check under settings to see how far back it will keep things.
Time Machine thins backups periodically according to some preset logic and the amount of space left on the storage destination. It keeps one backup per hour for the past 24 hours, one per day for the past week, one per week for the past month, and so on until the drive is full.
