Deleted Login Items do not stay deleted. (OS X 10.6.8)

I go to System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items and click the lock, then select unwanted applications and click "-" and re-lock the padlock, but next time I start the computer they are back. How can I remove them?

List the items. You might find them throughout the computer in various Library folders in LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons, or StartupItems.

  • Items will not stay in dock

I've been having trouble with my dock ever since upgrading to 10.5.2. As a side note, I'm an experienced Mac user, so these aren't related to my inability to use the dock properly. I've never had this problem before in 4 years of using OS X.
Items will disappear from my dock about 5-6 seconds after dragging them there from the applications folder. Similarly, when I try to rearrange applications in the dock, they stay for 5 seconds, and then move back to their previous location.
I've tried everything - resetting my PRAM, deleting the dock.plist file and starting anew, and even checking the "keep item in dock" menu item for each of the icons. Poof. They disappear.
Has anyone else seen this behavior? Any other ideas on how to fix it?

In addition to deleting to com.apple.dock.plist, did you also delete com.apple.dock.db? If not, might want to try that first. While you're at it also delete com.apple.LaunchServices.plist. Restat and keep your fingers X'd.
Another thing to try would be starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.
If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
Short of that, here's the whole litany for thoroughly checking your home folder. It's not as daunting as it looks.
    1. Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/Fonts - drag this folder to the desktop. While you at it also com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
    • Restart and test your applications.
    • If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( Likely suspects are Times RO, Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.) If not, put your Fonts folder back.
    2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
    • Navigate to ~(YourHome/Library/Preferences drag this folder to the desktop.
    • Restart and test your applications.
    • If this works, save the old preferences folder somewhere else or on disk, name it "old prefs" .
** Note: A very important file is the "com.apple.Mail.plist" preference file located in the Preferences folder which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences (hold this one and replace if your problem is not with Mail).
You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them. (Or if you have the time and inclination, "cherry pick" through until you find the problem one or two.)
    3. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
    • Navigate to YourHome/Library.
    • Get Info (Command - i) on folders for apps you are having problems with.
    • Open the "Ownership & permissions" disclosure triangle.
    • Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
    • Click on "apply to all"
    • If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are having trouble with.
(Note:The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.)
    4. Navigate to YourHome/Library/Caches and drag this folder to the trash, then log out and back or restart. There is no need to replace this folder.
    Let us know.

  • How do I stop Pages from opening when I log back in? Login items are not ticked.

Prior to Yosemite I had trouble with Pages where it closed down the app when I closed a document.
I was given a command line to put in the 'Terminal' to deactivate Pages. This worked.
That command was -  -g NSDisableAutomaticTermination -bool TRUE/False.   But that isn't recognised any longer when I reverse the True/False.
But I now don't want Pages to open automatically when I Log in.
The box is not ticked for Pages in System Preferences- Users- Login Items.

It needs to be removed from the list, not just unticked.

  • [GNOME] Panel Items Will Not Stay Arranged

For some odd reason or another, the items on the GNOME panels will occasionally stray from the arrangements they were put into during a prior session.  I have tried locking all of the items to the panels, but every now and then, I will log in to find that a few panel items have once again rearranged themselves.  On a similar note, the notification tray will expand itself to allow a new icon to spawn, but will not always shrink once the icon has been destroyed, leaving unsightly gaps between other items.
Is this an issue for other GNOME users, and are there any remedies to these issues?

I experience this when is switch to a low resolution, e. g. by starting a game. Gnome-Panel then rearranges fixed items because itself scales to the lower resolution. There is currently no fix for that.

  • 10.5.6 Login Items Error with Network Home Directories

I'm splitting this post off from a previous discussion which can be found here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1835976&tstart=0
With 10.5.6 our Login Items are not working on client machines that use Network Home Directories. Everything works fine under 10.5.5.
When the 10.5.6 client logs in, login items with a path directed to the Home/Documents folder cannot be found, and the following error appears in Console:
"Unable to resolve startup item: status = -35, theURL == NULL = 1"
I have no problem manually navigating to the Home/Documents folder and opening the login items. Removing and re-adding the login items does not fix the problem. Revert to 10.5.5 and the login items are fine.
Below is a suspicious error that I see repeated multiple times in Console (viewing "All Messages") on the 10.5.6 clients but not on the 10.5.5 clients:
    Sender:
    loginwindow 34
    Message:
FolderManager: Failed looking up user domain root; url='file://localhost/Network/Servers/myserver_name.com/Users/my_username/' path =/Network/Servers/myserver_name.com/Users/my_username/ err=-35 uid=0 euid=10790
I'm sure I could find a work-around by moving the location of my login items or maybe even changing to launchd. However, this error seems to indicate something going on with the 10.5.6 install that might be more serious. I've done some typical troubleshooting: DFA, Repairing Permissions, Clearing Caches, trashing loginwindow and MCX preferences, deleting the /Library/Managed Preferences folder, rechecking DNS on the server (forward and reverse lookup OK).
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks!

just to tell you, same thing here - it's nothing special about your setup. it's not a big issue for us as the kernel panic at logout on 10.5.6 is the real killer (no it's NOT JUST FONTS) so our workround is that we're not rolling it out! (staying 10.5.5).
but on my own test 10.5.6 mac i get exactly the same issue with login items that are in the network home. local apps (font management app, ichat etc in /Applications) OK, but stuff on the mounted home server - nope and a line in the syslog for each item:
    Jan 28 09:25:54 hc04800-bssaht loginwindow[32028]: Unable to resolve startup item: status = -36, theURL == NULL = 1

  • ITunesHelper Login Item - Yellow Exclamation Mark

    Hey people!
I was checking my login items and saw that next to the iTunesHelper there was a yellow exclamation mark... It said that "this item could not be found"... I upgraded my OS to Mountain Lion and it is a bit slow.. You think this could be a contributing factor?

    It's old. Remove it.
If you go into you iTunes settings, the checkbox to have it open iTunes when you attach a phone or ipad is what causes it to be placed in the login items.
    Not likely.

  • Auto LogIn Item - Seagate Central NAS

    Hey there
    Quick question if I may.
I have just set up a Seagate Central NAS for sharing files and streaming media around the house.
I have added the shared pubic folder in my auto log items so that I connect to the share automatically every time I boot up my mac.
As a consequence of this the finder window is opening at every login. Is there a way I can have the shared folder in my auto login items and not have the finder window open ?
Small thing but its annoying me
Any tips are greatly appreciated !
    Cheers

Just remove it from your login items. It should appear in the sidebar of a Finder window and mount automatically when needed.

If you do not lock that folder immediately after deleting all the contents, it will simply populate again (Resume - a "feature" in Lion). You do that by doing a Get Info (highlight folder and press Command + I keys), unlock the lock at the bottom, enter your admin password, then check the box to lock the folder. lock the lock and you're done.
Yes, that is correct. The alternative is to quit all applications prior to logging out. Lion will then have a chance to remove the saved states.

    And, for the OP:
It has also been a regular feature of Mac OS to automatically open any window that was open at shutdown. To avoit that behavior, simply close any Finder windows and  properly quit applications by closing their window and using Command + Q (or File >Quit).
This was true only for the Finder. Prior to Lion, no other apps would launch unless they were included in the Login Items for the account. And the OS would not restore windows for other apps.
A very small number of apps (TextWrangler is an example) implemented this capability prior to Lion. They could restore previously opened windows. But that is an application feature, and can be controlled by the application's preferences. Lion implements it at the system level, and users have virtually no control on a per application basis.

  • Can not delete or change login items

Can not delete or change login items on MacPro running Tiger (at work) as the Admin.
    Any ideas?

Since you are using the computer at your job, see if the following pertains to you: Login Items Added by a User Don't Open
If not, Try running repair permissions from your HD and afterwards run +repair disk+ from your software install DVD.

  • Login Items deleted and still opening at startup

    I deleted every login Item.
I have five programs opening at startup. Mail, Safari, Dictionary, Word for Mac and Online Bible.
I deleted them from SysPrefs/accounts/login Items.
    They still open at startup.
I am trying to switch from FireFox to Safari. If I have FireFox on the computer, even five folders down it opens at startup—all the programs do.
    Any suggestions?
    Blessings

    lightwait,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
There is one more place that you could look for these items.
Look in the Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems folder for any sign of those applications. What do you find there?
You mentioned that you placed Firefox 5 folders deep. This is not generally a good idea, especially with Apple Applications. Have you buried any other applications or utilities?
    ;~)

I accidentally deleted my utility launch in login items, how do I restore it?

If the Notes are no longer on icloud.com your only option would be to try restoring from your backup.  However Apple's documentation does not state that notes are included in the iCloud backup so it may not work.

  • What is the correct way to delete a global login item?

I installed a ArcSoft app that added a global login item to the files:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginitems.plist
    /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist
I want to remove this item and would like to know the correct/proper way to do this.

In the system.log I'm seeing the following after I renamed the /Library/Application Support/ArcSoft/Connect Service folder:
    Dec 7 15:32:24 gaak ConnectService[6813]: Error loading /Library/Application Support/ArcSoft/Connect Service/ConnectService.app/Contents/SubApp/Intouch.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Intouc h: dlopen(/Library/Application Support/ArcSoft/Connect Service/ConnectService.app/Contents/SubApp/Intouch.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Intouc h, 262): image not found
Note that I did not actually delete /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist
but renamed it to loginwindow.plist.arcsoft-maybe-delete. I did see another loginwindow.plist file was created automagically after I rebooted and I checked it and did not see any items in it.
    # defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook
    2009-12-12 17:03:50.651 defaults[27792:10b]
The domain/default pair of (com.apple.loginwindow, LoginHook) does not exist
I've looked in all the folders you mention and I do not find anything that references the ArcSoft ConnectService app. Here is everything I could find in /Library using:

  • Help!!! I deleted "ituneshelper" on SystemPrefs/Accounts/login items

    Hello Apple Discussions Community.
I deleted from Login Items, located in Accounts on System Preferences, the "iTunesHelper" item.
I would like to retrieve this link again, but it is a part of the iTunes Package, therefore, it is not possible to add it using the "+" button.
I would like to know if there is a command on Terminal or other way to resolve this issue.
    Thanks in advance.
    Jose Blanco.

Hello. I know this procedure, another thing was missing, that it's necessary to drag the icon to the LoginItems window to add it. I discovered it after following your suggestion.
    Thanks!!!

    Hi r,
It sounds like you're running Lion?
Have you tried running Verify and/or Repair Disk?
Have you tried running Repair Permissions?
Do you have at least 15% free space available on your HD?

  • 2LIS_02_ITM deleted line items are not reflected in BW

    Hi,
    Our current Data flow 2LIS_02_ITM-->DSO-->CUBE.
I am analyzing a Invoice, When it is created 01.04.2014 it has got 10 Line Items and all the data is load to BW,Invoice with 10 Line items.
In ECC I can now see the same Invoice only got 5 line items and from change log I can see 5 line items are deleted on 15.04.2014.These changes are not reflected in BW.In BW invoice data still shows 10 line items.
If I perform setup table job and ECC RSA3 for that invoice I am getting only 5.
I believe it’s something to do with 0RECORDMODE,Can you please let me know how to fix this in BW.
    Thanks

Yes this is a known behavior in case of deltas.
For Deleted line items Rocancel field will have an entry with R.
To handle this you need to map ROCANCEL field in Technical group of transformation (Between Datasource to DSO) with 0Recordmode.
Once you will do that then after activating the data in DSO it will nullify the records and deleted order or item will not appear.
